(Jack's POV)
I had been in the Western territories for a few days now, just getting a feel for the land. Ever since their last mountie had left, there had been an uprise of crime and conflict within the town. I was stationed here until a more permanent mountie could be found.
I looked down at the drawing of Beth I kept in my pocket, for I missed her so much everyday, but I knew she was safe and sound at home.
While looking at the photo of my beautiful girl, I bumped into someone on my path.
"My apologies ma'am."
The woman didn't really make eye contact, and she looked extremely startled. "It's okay, no harm done sir." She had dropped a few things that were in her basket, so I bent down to help her pick everything up. I noticed she had big brown eyes that matched the ringlets of hair falling in front of her face.
As I stood, I tipped my hat to her and reached out my hand, "I'm Constable Jack Thornton. I'm the temporary mountie of the Western territories."
"Margaret. Margaret Williams." She briefly shook my hand and then pushed the hair out of her face. "I'm the widow of the last mountie here, James Williams."
"I am very sorry for your loss, Mrs. Williams. I lost my wife a few years back, so I know how hard that must be."
"While I do appreciate the condolences, I must get going. Good day, Constable." Margaret left just as fast as she had come, and while I wasn't one for forcing relationships, I could feel the hurt and grief she was still harboring inside, and I wanted to help.
