Chapter 13
"Where is Stephanie? Why can't we see her?" Kate demanded as she and her husband Carl were led into the interrogation room by Munch and Elliot. She was almost six foot tall with long brown hair. Her complexion told them that she worked outside as she had a fading tan in March.
"She's being questioned by a specialist, who is on our team. We had to break some bad news and wanted to be sure we did it as sensitively as possible," Munch told them as they all sat down.
"Bad news?" Carl was confused. He was just over six foot tall, his hair was a light blonde and his skin was not suntanned. Someone as fair skinned as he was would burn before they tanned.
"I'm sorry but your uncle has passed away," Elliot explained.
"What? How?" Kate was now confused.
"We're working on that. We know he wasn't in the best of shape," Munch said.
"He had his issues but he wasn't… that bad," Carl couldn't bring himself to say it.
"Well unfortunately we think there was more to it than natural causes," Elliot decided to gauge their reaction. Kate looked like she was going to be sick.
"Who…" she managed.
"We don't know but we are wondering if it is tied to your sister's kidnapping," Munch said.
"Why? James would never hurt Stephanie. They were thick as thieves before all of this happened," Carl told them.
"Be that as it may, we found financial records inside his apartment that seem to indicate he was paying the supposed kidnappers," Elliot said.
"No, I refuse to believe it," Kate shook her head.
"We're having our forensic accountant looking into the insurance paperwork and financial reports which look like life insurance along with his bank accounts," Munch told them.
"My sister is a victim! How dare you suggest that my uncle added to her misery!" Kate banged her hands on the table and stood up. Carl grabbed her arm and made her sit back down.
"Your sister has been through a lot. You can understand why we'd be suspicious as to why someone thought your uncle had to die shortly after we found her," Elliot said. That made both Carl and Kate give him a look. There was a knock on the window and Munch went to find out what was going on outside the room.
"What's up?" Munch asked, surprised to see the Captain standing there, out in the hallway.
"Start pressing them with Alan and Linda's names. Also, see if the name, Doug means anything to them," Cragen told him.
"Who the hell is Doug?" John was confused.
"Stephanie just admitted to George and Olivia that she was at Doug's apartment when Linda killed Alan," the Captain explained.
"Do I want to know what this Doug did to her?" Munch asked.
"She clammed up after she let his name slip. They're trying to get more out of her now. Kenny called a few minutes ago. TARU made it through the password protection. They're sifting through the files now," Don heaved a sigh.
"I'm afraid to ask," John said.
"Just start with the names and we'll see about the computer files once you're done talking to them," the Captain told him. Munch nodded and headed back into the interrogation room. Don watched his detectives work. The sister and brother-in-law had no idea who these people where. The sister was getting antsy. She wanted to see her sister. The Captain couldn't blame her for that. Stephanie had been supposedly missing for a year. She had no idea what had happened to her and to be honest, even the unit didn't have a clear picture of what exactly happened to the mentally challenged woman but the Captain had a bad feeling that they were about to find out.
