A/N: I'm thinking one more chapter and then we'll be onto the next story. Now, I have been approached by a few readers to follow up my one-shot Tornado. So perhaps the next story will be the last in this series but I'd like to hear from you. Please let me know what you think.
For those that celebrate - Happy Thanksgiving! For those that don't - Happy Thursday! Either way, I hope you are happy, safe, and healthy.
Chapter 32
"So, they're heading up there now?" Fin asked after Elliot broke the news at the precinct. The two of them were leaning up against a couple of desks, staring at the board while Munch was placing crime scene photos onto it. They had a new case and the victim was barely hanging on at the hospital.
"Yes. I honestly don't know how Clint will survive this. They were married for a long time," Elliot heaved a sigh.
"He has a community around him though. What about Calvin?" Munch wondered.
"Well Ethel wanted Liv to have full custody of Calvin. She didn't want him to not have a mom and now he's lost two so…" Stabler shook his head.
"That poor kid. What about Clint?" Kenny spoke up from his desk.
"He's got a lot on his plate. Not sure that Liv will bring it up now," Elliot said.
"I wouldn't expect her to but as the only relative, who can actually take Calvin in…" Briscoe trailed off, implying there could be a fight on Olivia's hands if Clint wanted any part of the custody of his grandson.
"Yeah, messy isn't the word for it," Elliot nodded.
"Messy is our new case. Vic hasn't been ID'd and she might not make it," Munch brought them all to focus.
"So, we're just letting Peter Bell go?" Kenny asked.
"No, but with no hint to his whereabouts and with Linda still not coughing anything up, we're stuck. Cabot will nail that crazy lady's ass to the wall and Kevin will go to jail as agreed. Hopefully that means Stephanie can get the help she needs and go home with her sister," the Sergeant said. Fin frowned but said nothing. He had wanted the man who shot Sally to get caught.
"So, what have you and Fin got for us?" Elliot wanted to know. The eldest detective went onto explain what they'd found at the crime scene and what the next steps were. Despite the previous case being mostly wrapped up, he had a feeling that somehow, someway Peter Bell wouldn't stay quiet for long.
"Mom…" Calvin spoke up from the passenger seat of Olivia's car. They had been silent for a while as she navigated the highway.
"What's up?" She asked without taking her eyes off the road.
"What's going to happen to Stephanie?" He wondered. Olivia was surprised he'd bring her up, but if it was keeping his mind off the death of his grandma, she wasn't one to dissuade him.
"Well, we're hoping that she doesn't have to testify and that she gets the help she needs. I think that with the right help, she can move on with her life and live the best she can," she told him. Calvin just nodded.
"She's been through a lot and it's going to take time, especially since she has a hard time expressing her emotions and herself due to her brain injury," Olivia continued.
"You said she had a friend?" He asked.
"Yes, Doug. He has an autism spectrum disorder. Love can blossom in places you least expect it, but I think you knew that already," she said.
"But Stephanie isn't from here. How would they be able to even visit each other?" Calvin ignored the last part that she mentioned.
"Well that I don't know. Stephanie's family and Doug's mom will need to figure out what they can. I think that both Stephanie and Doug would actually benefit from being in each other's presence. She helps bring him out of his shell and he cares about her without expecting anything from her. It's an unconditional love that may not look like everyone's picture of love but love nonetheless. That make sense?" Olivia asked. Calvin just nodded again.
"Look, if you're feeling a bit detached right now, I understand. I had a… well… strange relationship with my mother. When she passed, there were a lot of emotions and thoughts and stuff I needed to process. You take as long as you need to, to process this, ok? No one is expecting anything from you. You just need to grieve and when you're ready, talk to someone. Whether that's me or Doctor Huang or Elliot or whoever. Just know you're loved and that no matter what happens that won't change," she told him. Calvin nodded and gave her a slight smile.
