Chapter 2 —

It was Friday afternoon and when Sam walked into her apartment (it was really her and Alex's apartment unofficially) she saw a sight that melted her eyes.

The credits of a film were playing and Alex was passed out asleep on the couch. She looked younger than she was. Sam went to reach down and brush some hair out of Alex's face when the Agents nose scrunched up and a slight whimper came out of her mouth. Sam frowned and kneeled down beside her, gently running her hand through Alex's red locks. "Shh, Alex, I'm here. I'm here," she whispered, kissing her forehead. Alex whimpered again and tried to curl in on herself but her baby bump stopped her. Sam saw tears leaking out her eyes and then she mumbled:

"No. Please. Leave my girlfriend alone," she begged; a thin layor of sweat was starting to form on her and Sam didn't know what to do. Was it even safe to wake someone up from a nightmare? "No. Please, take me instead! Sam!" she started to yell a little bit. Her body was shaking, her voice broke and tears came out her eyes even more now.

Sam started to shake her gently. "Alex. Alex, honey, wake up. It's just a nightmare. You're okay," she whispered into her ear. Alex let out small gasps and shot up awake. Her small frame shaking as quiet, muffled sobs tore through her tired body. Sam wrapped her arms around her girlfriend from behind and Alex flinched a little. "It's just me," Sam whispered again. Alex relaxed into her hold and rested the back of her head on Sam's shoulder. "That's it. Deep breaths. Calm down," she murmured.

Alex let out small hiccups as she stopped crying and then settled on slowing down her heart. Sam gently wiped her eyes, going slowly so she was mindful of her actual eye. That's all Alex wants, Sam poking her eye out while trying to dry her tears. "Sam?" Alex asked horsely.

"Mmhm," Sam replied, resting her head against Alex's sweaty one.

"Are you alive? Is-is this real?" she asked hesitantly. "I know this is childish and I know that- that I'm an adult, but I've had that many dreams and- and this one was so vivid it was like a memory not a dream," she added. Sam rubbed up and down her arms and kissed her cheek.

"Does that feel real to you?" she asked. Sam was trying to change the mood a little bit here. She wanted Alex to laugh and smile. She wanted to take her mind off of her nightmare.

Alex shuddered, in pleasure, and nodded her head. Sam grinned and kissed her neck and her back. She stopped and Alex relaxed, leaning against her and closing her eyes. "You still tired?" she asked.

Alex nodded, her eyes still closed. "Yeah. My back is aching and I couldn't get comfy last night so I'm a little tired," she murmured, stifling a yawn. Sam moved backwards and rested in the corner of the sofa and gently (with the help of Alex herself) brought Alex back on top of her.

Sam wrapped her arms around her and cuddled with the tired woman. Soon they drifted off to sleep.

At 3:20, Ruby walked in the door. She went to call out for her mom but stopped when she walked into the living room. She found her mom laying on the sofa with Alex curled up next to her. She look peaceful asleep.

Ruby edged closer and stared at Alex before looking at the baby bump. She kneeled down and said softly. "Hey. I'm Ruby. Apparently baby's can kind of hear what you're saying and that's how they knows who's voice belongs to you or something — that's why it's kind of important for expecting parents to talk to their kid.

"Erm, anyway. When I first heard about you I was happy, happy for my mom and happy to have a sibling. However, that excitement turned into jealousy I suppose. It's always been me and my mom. Then my mom met Alex — she's your other mom – and they hit it off and they got together. I guess I felt a little left out as she had to share the attention," Ruby paused and bit her lip. It felt weird talking to somebody that wasn't here, somebody that couldn't reply.

She knew that whatever she said didn't really matter. The baby wouldn't remember what she said. She wouldn't even remember her name when she was born. However, Ruby needed to do this for her. She needed to get this off her chest.

"And- and I knew that I couldn't always have my mom to myself — she was bound to meet someone at some point. It's just different when it actually happens. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that when you are born, I will be the best big sister ever. Well, after Alex and our Aunt Kara. So …yeah," Ruby suddenly felt really awkward and shifted away before going into her bedroom.

'Cuz that wasn't weird.

When the door shut, Alex shifted and opened her eyes. Damn Kar, you were right, she thought sadly.

"Mom, really, I am fine. You don't need to do this every day," Alex protested as she saw Eliza get the kit out again.

"Oh be quiet Alex. I am your mother and I just want to make sure everything is okay for you. Is that too much to ask?" she asked. Alex nodded her head.

"Yes. Maybe I just want to relax because your grandchild doesn't let me sleep at night," she almost snapped. "Seriously. If you could asked Winn, he would tell you all the things I threaten him with when I am not a hormonal mess. You do not Wanna see me when I am,"

Eliza sighed and placed the things down before sitting on the couch and stroking through Alex's hair. "I know I may seem as overbearing Alex, but I just care about you and I want to make sure everything is healthy. Okay?" she asked. Alex cracked open an eye and saw Eliza's concerned face so she sighed and mutely relented; lifting her top up so Eliza could put the gel on it.

During the process, both women were silent. Alex because she wanted to go to sleep but Eliza because she was trying to concentrate. Of course, the only things she could do right now were listened so the baby's bear eat and ask Alex a bunch of questions about how she is taking care of herself.

However, everything she went to the far left of Alex's stomach, she heard a smaller heartbeat. Or at least she thought it was. Of course she could hear her granddaughters strong heart (a little too strong for her age) but there was this nagging felling that something was going on.

"Are you done? Or are you gonna keep growing at my balloon belly?" Alex asked. Eliza snapped out of it and put her things away. "So, what's the verdict doc? Am 'a gonna die?" she put on her best pout and sad eyes (nobody can do that as good as Kara can).

"Enough with the dramatics Alexandra. I was merely making sure you're healthy," Eliza snapped. Alex closed her eyes and groaned before turning and going to sleep. Eliza rubbed her face and sighed before walking out of the apartment. "You could appreciate what I do for you," she suggested sarcastically.

"And you could lay off me for a few hours! All you have done since you got here is moan in my ear about this and that!" yelled Alex, San winced from her place hidden in her bedroom. "God, Mom!"

"I have no idea how Samantha puts up with you!" she yelled as she pulled the door shut.

When the door slammed shut, Alex opened her eyes and sat up before looking at the ceiling. "Wish you were here dad," she whispered.

"Supergirl," J'onn said as he came walking over to her. Kara had just put away an alien and was leaning on the balcony.

"Hey J'onn," Kara relied quietly. He stood next to her and glanced at her through the corner of his eye.

"What's on your mind?" he asked. Kara shrugged.

"It's nothing really," she brushed off. He could sense it though and not because he was a telepath. Kara saw him staring and sighed. "It's just …CADMUS have been really quiet lately and I have no idea what they are planning," she revealed.

J'onn nodded in understand. "Ah, yes. I understand. But for now, Kara, take delight in the huge break it's given you. No matter what happens, you will be stronger and more rested and ready to fight them. Whatever trouble they may cause," Kara shook her head.

"I don't know J'onn. Whatever their planning …it feels big. Like, I'm really worried big," Kara then took off, leaving a concerned J'onn in her wake.

Lillian walked into the headquarters of CADMUS and everyone immediately got to work. Some of them were standing around talking but they saw the glare the eldest living Luthor wore. She was not happy. "Graves! Where are we on the project?" she yelled. Mercy came walking up to her with a tablet.

"We have located the device. It's in a DEO secure facility," she reported. "One problem. We don't know exactly where and it's listed that only one person knows the location," Lillian looked at the tablet and rolled her eyes.

Of course.

"Can you find a way to locate it?" she asked, walking to her office. Mercy shook her head.

"No Lillian. As I said, only she knows where it is. Not even Supergirl or the Director knows," Mercy explained slightly irritated.

Lillian made a noise to acknowledge her before signing. "Well, that's a good thing I suppose. This means that the weapon is actually useful," she said mostly to herself. "Fine. Gear them up. Train them. I want to know this location. No matter what!"

Mercy nodded and left.

"Ponytail!" Snapper yelled. Kara sighed (and murmured here we go again) and walked over to him.

"Yes?"

"This is garbage. I want an actual quote from Miss Luthor and I want a quote from Sam Arias about what LCorp is doing," he ordered, not even looking after Kara as he slammed her paper down.

Kara held in a groan and sent a quick text to Lena.

(Lena)

K: hey Lee x

can I get a quote from you regarding the recent attack on L Corp? x

Snapper wants a direct quote x

L: yeah sure x

K: thank you x 3

L: 3

Kara put her phone away and almost walked into Ruby. "Hey Rubes. What you doing here?" she asked. Ruby looked sad and Kara pulled her in for a hug. "What's the matter?"

"Mom missed my game," she cried. Kara sighed and held her close. This was not going to help the dynamic between Ruby and Alex.

Ruby sat in her room and stared at the baby photo that was on her Moms Facebook. She and Kara had just gotten in (Ruby had her own key) and she ran to her room.

Her mom knew how much that game meant to her and had promised she would be there. They were against National Prep after all. They had the best players around Ruby's age than most schools. Their goalkeeper was a girl called Nichole and had a nine game clean sheet — Ruby ruined her streak by scoring two goals.

Her mom missed it though.

Ruby had scored and celebrated and looked around only to find the empty seat that was for her mom and Alex. She did see Lena after half time but she ran off before Lena could catch up with her and went straight to Kara.

"I bet it was because of you," she whispered as she looked at the photo. "But I can't stay mad at you. I know that when you are born you will be the best thing ever and I can live with being second best — I can! After all, you'll only be a baby. But …I wish that wouldn't happen right now," Ruby sighed and hid the photo under her pillow (she got her friend to print out the picture from Alex's Instagram).

She felt herself begin to cry as she thought about the game but Kara poked her head in. "Hey Ruby. Lena's here," Ruby nodded and refused to look at her aunt. "Erm …she's a little offended at the obvious rejection after the game,"

Still nothing.

"She brought victory pizza …and a can of cider for you if you don't tell your mom," Ruby laughed at that. She knew that her mom hated it when Aunt Lena let her have some of her less alcoholic drinks, i.e, cider; beer; wine.

"Okay. But only if I can also have some of whatever she's having," she knew what Lena was having. She usually has it after a hard day at work and a casual evening with pizza.

"She can but definitely do not tell your mother!" Lena called from the landing. She walked into the room and gave Ruby a choice of movie. The pizza was put on the floor and Ruby was handed her a Mixed Fruit Kopparberg.

Sam glanced at Alex out the corner out of her eye and rested a hand on her knee. Alex jumped a little at the contact but relaxed as she saw her girlfriends eyes on her. "Whats the matter babe?" she asked in a soft tone. Alex shrugged and focused on driving; she didn't want to voice her fears to Sam because what if she thinks she is weak and a cowardly. "Come on Alex. Tell me. What's eating you?" she prompted gently.

"Hopefully you later," Alex joked with a fake grin. Sam gently slapped her knee with a glare.

"Alex," she chastised.

Alex let out a sigh and pushed her back wit a rake of her hand. "I dun- I dunno. I just-" she stopped talking and focused on the road again. Sam gently rubbed her knee.

"Just take a breath Alex. You're slightly scaring me right now," admitted Sam with a frown on her angelic features. Alex nodded (she put the break on as the sign went red).

When she formed the sentence in her mind she said it out loud. "When our little girl is born, I am scared that I wont be good enough. I mean, I have a short temper, I have struggles on when to stop drinking and I have one of the most dangerous jobs," she said, her face going tight as she told her girlfriend her fears. Sam placed a protective hand on Alex's bump and a quick kiss on Alex's face (Alex then got the car started again as the light went green).

Am had a small smile on her face, she definitely knew her girlfriend alright. She had been waiting for this to come up and was surprised this wasn't the subject of a conversation when Alex found out she was pregnant. "Alex, for starters, you will love or girl so much to that will overrule any anger you have okay. Believe me. Second, when yo are out in he field yo have Kara with you and when our girl she will make triple the effort to make sure you go home," Sam assured her. "Even now, Kara – and nodded even J'onn – are so careful when it comes to your safety in the field. How many times has he benched you from a fight since your first field mission because it was too dangerous. Before you even knew he was a Martian?"

Alex nodded her head. That was true. There was so many times that he didn't want her going on a mission because of how dangerous the alien was. He was her space dad even before she knew he was from space. "Yeah, that's true. I just- I get something in my head and I think it over all the time. No matter how small or how – you know – it is i-its just stuck a-and I cant-" Sam silenced her with a hand over her mouth (Alex kissed it gently and elected an eye roll off of Sam).

"Alexandra Danvers, you are an amazing woman and I do want to spend the rest of my life with you — as our child will too. Stop worrying. Its bad for your health," Alex stared at her before brewing out into a grin ad kissing her. Alex then focused on the road again, all too aware of Sam's lingering gaze.

Sam and Alex got in and the latter immediately went to the couch to lay down; she was feeling a little tired at the minute and her feet were aching.

Sam walked into Ruby's room and saw the empty pizza boxes and empty cans — she chose to ignore her daughter's quick efforts in hiding her drink. "So, I took it you won," Sam commented nonchalantly.

Ruby scoffed. "You'd know if you were there. Even Aunt Lena watched the last ten minutes," Sam winced and sat on Ruby's bed. She knew this was going to happen when she realised she missed the game.

"I am so sorry Ruby. I would have come if I could; you know that. I was just wrapped up in something," Sam said, edging closer to Ruby.

The teenager muttered, "More like in someone," under her breath and started to clean the room so she would have something to do (Sam turned red at Ruby's insinuation) instead of look at her mum.

"Ruby, I'm sorry okay. I know how much this game meant to you," Sam felt her heart shatter when she saw a glimpse of her daughters sad face.

Sam knew that she couldn't help it; there are plenty of other football matches for her attend and watch, but she knew that that a player on the team (she couldn't remember a name or anything) was one of the best or something.

"Mom, just stop. You couldn't make it because you were with your girlfriend. I get it," the teens reply was laced in venom and it bit into Sam.

Ruby didn't care at the hurt that flashed in her moms face. All she wanted to do was hurt her like she hurt her. Sam, on the other hand, knew she couldn't let her get away with this. Yes, she is upset. Yes, Sam may have let her down. Disappointed her maybe, but you can't talk to anyone like that. Regardless of who it was.

"Ruby, stop speaking to me in that tone young girl," reprimanded Sam. Ruby shook her head and put the last of the paper that was on her floor in her bin. "I know you're upset, mad and maybe a bit disappointed in me but that is no way you treat anyone! Let alone your mother. Now, the reason I couldn't make it was because I was comforting Alex. I have two beautiful girls in my life; soon to be three. I have my daughter and my girlfriend," hopefully wife some day, she thought.

Ruby chose to stay silent. She looked everywhere but her moms face as she juggled the words in her head. "Okay," she said. Ruby walked out the room and said before she left completely; "By the way, I scored two goals and ruined Nichole's clean sheet. Just so you know,"

Sam sighed and rubbed her head; she was not looking forward to her new girls teenage phase. Not one bit.

Alex arrived at work and immediately found it in shambles. There were agents running left right and centre and yelling. J'onn walked over to Alex and looked a little relieved. "Agent Danvers. I need you to work with Delta squad. I am stretched thin here as I need to oversee another team," he said. Alex nodded and headed over to the station where Agent Vasquez handed her a comm.

"This is Agent Danvers. Does anyone copy?" she asked firmly. Her comm crackled to life and a mans voice filtered through.

"Agent Danvers! It's a trap! We've been ambushed!" he yelled. There was commotion being heard behind him and a few yells. "We need backup on the third quadrant of the building! That's where the most shi— no!" he broke off from his sentence and Alex could hear his gun going off.

"You will never defeat us pathetic humans" a deep voice was heard through the earpiece but it sounded far away as it was secondary sound.

Alex spring (kinda) into action. She grabbed her phone and called Kara. "Supergirl! You're needed!" she told her where the commotion was and she soon saw Kara's tracker appear on the map.

"Agent Kilian, Supergirl is en route. I repeats, Supergirl is on her way. Hold tight soldiers," she said comfortingly.

"Erm, Agent Danvers. We need your help in the lab," said a soldier only a couple ranks below Alex. Alex groaned and ungraciously got down the stairs after telling Vasquez to get her as soon as anything else goes south. There was an underlying message of especially if it is to do the Kryptonian.

Before Kara got a call from Alex, she was in her sisters apartment with Ruby and Sam. Lena had to run off got L-Corp business so it was just Kara from the SuperCorp duo. Kara looked at her shirt and whimpered childishly. She had just come back from rescuing a kid in a tree and remembered that she ripped her top to free her suit.

"Hey Sam!" Kara yelled.

"Yeah Kar!" Sam replied, she wasn't as loud due to her super hearing.

"Could I borrow a shirt?!" she asked. Sam called back that she could so Kara went into the master bedroom and scoured through the draws. As she was looking in the wardrobe, a sight caught her eye. It was a square panel of wood but it had lines going around it. Like somebody had had something sharp and drew a square at the back of the wardrobe.

Kara bit her lip. Alex had told her not to use her X-Ray vision unless it was dire, but this could be just as important. What if it is something someone is using to spy on them while they sleep and do other things.

That's why Kara pulled her black glasses down off her face and zoomed in. She saw a smaller box sat in there. A box with a strange silhouette in it.

Curiously, Kara reached in and grabbed the box. It was black and velvet and fit in her palm like a small Maryland's chocolate chip biscuit. She lifted the top up and was amazed by what she saw. "Holy sun," it hit her again. "Rao, this means-" Kara rushed out the room and almost ran into Ruby.

"Aunt Kara!" Ruby called as Kara apologised. She heard Sam laughing so when she appeared at the kitchen doorway, Sam raised an eyebrow at her girlfriends sister.

"Are you trying to kill my daughter Zor-El?" Sam asked teasingly. Kara held out the box in a straight hand.

Kara didn't falter. "Are you trying to propose to my sister Arias?" Kara countered. Sam stared at the ring looking like a fish — both were oblivious to Ruby who was just behind Kara. She was ready for a retort and heard it all.

Sam just started at Kara's protective eyes. "Yes," Sam said strongly. "Yes I plan to propose to Alex when she gets in from work. So can you shoo?" she asked, making a shove motion.

Kara's face lit into a smile and she engulfed Sam (her almost sister-in-law) in as much a bear hug as she feels safe with. And throws the ring in the air and catches it. Sadly, it slips past her fingers and goes slowly into the sink.

It circled the drain dangerously, taunting them as it got close and closer to the hole; closer to being lost forever. It seemed to not stop, the band reflecting both Kara and Sams horrified faces before…..
