Chapter 6: Night Surfing.

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha

Kaori was standing in the kitchen cutting up some veggies to add them into the stew she was cooking for dinner when her children walked in the door. She turned around with a hopeful smile, "so did you guys have a good first day?"

Before Kagome could say anything Souta beamed at their mother before firing off about his day. "I've made so many friends and I've signed up for middle school football! I don't know what that really means yet, but I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out fast!"

I bright genuine smile broke across Kaori's face. "That's great Souta! I know some about football, I'll talk to you later about it." Her smile turned hopeful again as she looked at her daughter's face. "And you, Kagome, how was your day?"

"I had an okay day. I made a couple friends and I like all my teachers so that's a good start." Kagome said then bit her lip looking a little apprehensive and unsure if her mom would actually allow her to go night surfing or not. "Hey, mom? Um, my friends invited me to go night surfing with them tonight. Would it be okay with you if I go?"

"Night surfing? Did I ever tell you that I used to surf?" When she saw her children shake their heads, Kaori got a sad look on her face. She had never meant to keep her children from the world she was just trying to keep Kagome safe, but she regretted not allowing her kids to experience and really enjoy the outside world. She sighed and sniffled. "I used to be one of the best ones out there. There was very few competitions that I didn't come out on top. I doubt I'd be any good at it now, but if you find that you like surfing tonight then we will make it a mother/daughter thing to go surfing two or three times a week. And Souta if you want to join I bet I could drag your dad with us and we can make it a family thing to go surfing. I'm no where near good at football, but I can watch games with you on the T.V. and I bet dad wouldn't mind in learning how to play right along side of you and make it a father/son thing."

Kaori sighed and drop her gaze towards the floor. "I know that I've kept you away from experiencing things and learning thing in the past, but not anymore. From this day forward we are going to get out and experience things as a family, but you have to promise to be careful and make sure you don't expose us. I don't want to keep you guys locked up anymore so Kagome I give you permission to go tonight and Souta you, me and dad will watch football when he gets home from an interview he had so we can get a better idea of how to play the game and your father and you can start practicing."

Kagome smiled a small smile and walked to stand in front of her mother, she put a hand on her shoulder. "Mom, it's okay! We understand why you and dad did what you did." She sighed, developed a sad look and dropped her hand from her mom's shoulder. "If anyone should be apologizing is me. If it weren't for my human blo-"

"Kagome! Stop it! We've already talked about this! It is not your fault for what your father and I did or what happened to our family. The other vampires were just closed minded to anything new and not willing to take into consideration with how things could be different. So please stop blaming yourself and learn to love yourself-all of yourself. Human and vampire blood alike. Now, will I be able to meet these new friends of yours before you leave?" Kaori said.

Kagome smiled a watery smile and threw her arms around her mother. "Thanks mom I'll try to love all of myself and yes they are going to be her in about two hours to see if I can go and meet you and dad."

Kaori nodded dumping the cut up veggies into the stew telling her kids to go upstairs to work on their homework that dinner would be done in about an hour. As her children walked up stairs she smiled, she was so happy that her children was trying new things and making friends.

Sitting on her bed she smiled as she pulled out her math book, glad that it was the only subject she had homework in. She was done with her homework about thirty, now she was picking out a pair of blue short shorts, a white tank top and a pair of white flip-flops. As she set her outfit on her bed she heard her mom yell up that dinner was ready, skipping down the stair she smiled when she saw her father was home and walked to give him a hug.

As they all sat around the dinner table to eat Kaori asked her husband how his interview went.

"It went really well! They said they really liked me and gave me the job right on the spot." Receiving congratulations from everyone around the table, Mr. Higurashi turned towards kids and smiled. "So, Kagome, I heard you made some new friends today and they invited you to go night surfing."

Kagome smiled. "Yes, father, mother already said I could go, but are you okay with me going?"

"Of course, dear, I'm glad you made friends." Mr. Higurashi smiled at Kagome then turned his attention towards Souta. "I also heard that you signed up for the football team, I'm very proud of you and would love to learn how to play together."

Souta beamed at their father. "Thank you, father, that would make me very happy."

The rest of dinner was filled with odd and ends that happened throughout the day. Everyone very pleased with how today turned out.
