Jasper POV
Bella and I were now staying in a suburban part of Philadelphia. We found a house, owners of which left the state for a few months, so we were staying in it now. It was rather nice having a place where we could come at night, or spend all the sunny days in. For the past few years, our vegetarian diet became something that we not only got used to but were fond of. This new lifestyle opened a lot of possibilities for both of us, Isabella was able to acquire some money for translating documents into French, she had more control for her blood lust than me. I was still trying to get accustomed to humans, so I made it a daily task to go around the town center, even walk into less crowded diners or bookstores. That's where I was heading right now, my sister's birthday was coming up, and I needed to get her a gift. As she was very much fond of books, I decided to get her a brand new "Taken at the Flood" by Agatha Christie that just came out 4 months ago. Bella didn't much enjoy detective stories, she has always been a good novel lover; however, she found the works of this British lady rather interesting.
My plan to walk to the bookstore was interrupted by heavy rain that suddenly started falling from the sky. There wasn't even a cloud when I left the house, so my umbrella was still at home. I decided to hide out in a small diner on the corner, it was empty, and it was better than receiving looks from a random passerby. The rain wouldn't bother me, but I had to pretend that it did to pass as a human.
The diner looked just like any other, with little booths around the walls with a large bar space in the middle. Red and blue were the main colors of most businesses nowadays. Patriotism after the War ended boomed significantly, so every human in the United States made it their absolute duty to show off their pride. As I walked in, I brushed my hand through my hair dripping water around me. My eyes met another pair of gold. A tiny dark-haired miracle was walking my way with a big grin on her face. I couldn't even move away; she was so charming and absolutely beautiful. She took her hand in mine, and lead me to one of the booths in the corner.
"You've kept me waiting!" she smiled, when I sat down.
"My apologies, ma'am." I couldn't help but smile too. The energy that was radiating off of her was something that I couldn't say I've ever felt. There was so much happiness and joy inside her, I instantly felt as I could never be sad as long as she is with me. Her emotions were overpowering. "I don't believe we've met before."
"We haven't. But I knew you were going to be here today, I was just wrong about the time, had to sit here for two hours, almost lost hope. But the vision never changed, I knew we would meet eventually. I am Alice, by the way."
"My name is…" I started.
"Jasper Whitlock, major Jasper Whitlock, ma'am." Alice finished for me, and I looked at her confused. How did she know? "I'm sorry for interrupting, it's just that I am so excited to see you in person. I've been waiting for 28 years for you to come."
"I am sorry I kept you waiting so long." I smiled again looking even more confused. "Who are you, Alice?"
"In short, my gift is what I call subjective precognition. In simpler words, I can see the future, the things that might happen, things that are coming; however, it is very subjective as the future isn't set in stone, it's always changing as new decisions are being made. But I saw you coming to this diner on the 12th of September, 1948 back in 1920 when I was turned." She spoke.
"But I haven't decided to go inside the diner until just 5 minutes ago, how was it possible for you to see it so long ago?" I asked.
"Maybe it's because we were supposed to meet at this exact time. I saw visions of you during these years, but later about that. I don't want to tell you my whole story yet, as I know Bella would like to hear it too. She's going to freak out at first, and I don't know why yet, but she will love me immediately after I explain everything, and we'll become sisters."
"You've seen Bella in your visions too?"
"Almost as much as you. I understand, that you don't know me, at least not yet, but Jasper, I know you, I've known you for decades now. Please forgive me if I'm making you uncomfortable with all of my blabbering."
"Alice, I might not know you yet, but I must tell you that I've never felt so calm around anyone, nor human, nor vampire. I feel like I was the one waiting all of this time for you, and not the other way around." I said honestly.
"To be frank with you, I am still not sure if this is happening in my head or real life. I've met other vampires, the one who had mates, and I was so eager to just let my premonition of us here aside, and try to track you down using my gift. Something stopped me all of these times, and now I think I know why. This is the perfect way of meeting your soulmate." Alice squeaked, and I couldn't help but smile at her words. Is that how one's mate connection is identified? One gets mesmerized by another person?
"When would you like to go home, Alice?" I asked simply. "Can't say I will be able to let you go now that I've got you, besides, I would love to hear your story."
"How about right now? I'm so excited to meet my future sister and the house that you live in looks so beautiful! We'd have to move somewhere else in 5 days though, the owners are coming back early. I was thinking Maine at this time of year doesn't get a lot of sun, so we would be able to stay there for a little while. But, of course, I am getting a little bit ahead of myself. Here, take this." She gave me a big black umbrella that was hiding under the table all of this time. "You are much taller than me, so it would be more practical if you hold it over both of us."
"Yes, ma'am." I did exactly as I was told. Alice didn't stop rambling about everything that she saw on our way to the house, and I was physically not able to stop smiling for the whole walk home. The woman was saying fifteen words a second, so to a normal human ear it just sounded like background noise, for mine, however, it was like a thousand tiny bells ringing in my ears, which felt pleasant. I was falling in love with this little lady and her sweet southern accent.
"Welcome home, dear," I said when we finally stepped onto the driveway.
"It is even more beautiful than I've seen, can't wait to see it from the inside." Alice smiled at me, and I had another chance to admire all of her elegant features. She had a tiny pointy nose, full cheeks, her hairstyle looked odd, as women tend to keep their hair at least at shoulder lengths, however, I couldn't imagine that it would suit her better than her pixie-like hairstyle. She wore it with confidence.
"Shall we then?" I lead her to the door and opened it letting her come in first. "Bella, come downstairs, I want you to meet someone."
In just a few moments, I saw my sister walking down the stairs. She froze immediately when she saw Alice. Isabella's emotions were flying all over the place, shock, confusion, recognition, sadness, happiness, gratitude, she was feeling all of it.
"I can't believe it!" Bella sobbed. "You found her; how did you find her?" In less than a second, my sister was already next to us, holding Alice's face in her hands, trying to gulp in every last detail of my mate's face. I was so confused, of course, I knew my sister would be happy that I found my mate, but I couldn't imagine it would make her so fond of her immediately. After a few seconds, Bella nodded and gave Alice a big hug, lifting her from the ground. "Oh, Mary, how I've missed you!"
And then it clicked, Bella thought that Alice was her sister. That's why she was so happy to see her. That was the reason for her emotions being so out of place. But she wasn't Mary. It was Alice. And then it clicked again. Her sister's name was Mary Alice. I looked at my mate with disbelief and regret. If it wasn't for me, Alice…or Mary could have found Bella so much sooner.
POV Bella
I couldn't believe it. Mary, my little sister was standing right in front of me. I looked over her face immediately. Her nose, lips, cheeks, forehead, the shape of her eyes was left on her face just the way I remembered them from when she was about to turn 5. A short haircut was something new, she always liked her long hair, never let anyone except mom touch it. But that was definitely her. My heart sobbed when I hugged her. She was so tiny, even shorter than me.
"Oh Mary, how I've missed you!" I whispered.
"I am so glad to meet you, Bella, but my name is Alice. Have we met before?" she asked when I let her go.
My heart sank to the floor. How can she not remember? I know it's been ages since she last seen me, but she should have had at least some of her memory left, right? I was panicking, on the verge of having a meltdown. It felt like all of my hope disappeared, and as I felt small waves of calm energy trying to enter my body, and I let them.
"You…you don't remember?" I whispered trying with all of my powers not to start sobbing.
"I don't remember anything from my human life. Did you know me back then?" She asked enthusiastically, I nodded. "Alright, that explains everything. When I woke up after the transformation, I only had one piece of paper in my hand. It said, "your name is Alice, you are 19 years old, you are not crazy." That is all I know about myself."
"Well, the paper didn't lie." I smiled at her, at least there was an explanation as to why she didn't know me. I made myself believe that maybe it is for the best. She doesn't need to know about our parents giving her up to the asylum or my disappearance and the pain that she might have felt from losing me. None of those things will ever happen again, I'll make sure of it. "You are indeed 19, and you are definitely not crazy, but your name isn't Alice, at least not your full one anyway." I sighed. "You were born in 1901 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and were named after your maternal grandmother, Mary Alice Brandon. Your father was a jeweler, mother was a stay-at-home wife. You also have two older sisters, Cynthia, and well me." I finished.
"You are my sister? My actual blood sister?" Alice exclaimed. "Oh my god! Isn't that so exciting and wonderful! I knew you would be my sister when I meet you, but I never saw that we were actually related! Tell me everything, I want to know my past, and your past, and Jasper's past, and I can tell you everything that happened to me after I became a vampire. And…" I saw Jasper putting his hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her down, but that didn't do much. I wondered if she too had a shield of her own, or maybe it was just the way she was.
"Let's sit down, I think this will be one hell of a conversation." He spoke for the first time after their arrival. All three of us went into the living room, Jasper sat at the head of the table, Mary and I on both sides next to him. I saw Jasper grab my sister's hand, and I looked at them confused.
I told her everything about our parents, Cynthia, and what happened after I disappeared; then Jasper stated things about his past, his eyes never leaving hers. Now it was the turn for Mary to tell us about herself.
"During my transformation, I saw a vision of my future. As people or vampires make choices, they are narrowing down which visions can happen. Sometimes I see the full picture of events, other times there are just glimpses. Flashes of future possibilities are coming from the choices that others make, but if their mind changes, it becomes a whole new future. Despite what I just said, I believe that some things are destined to happen without anyone's decision. I knew I was destined to meet Jasper in the diner in downtown Philadelphia on this day. I knew from that first vision that he's going to be the man who I'll fall in love with." She started, and I looked at Jazz, who will become my lawful brother one day and couldn't help but smile at the thought. If there would be a man who I would trust completely to take care of my sister, it would be him. "As years have passed, I kept getting visions about him, but now you were next to him, and so I knew that one day we'll become sisters, pardon my lost memories, didn't know that we already were." Mary giggled. "About six years ago I saw you both drinking blood from animals, and at the same time, I had a vision of a family that we all will one day be a part of. They are vegetarians too, such nice people."
The last part I already knew without any ability to look into the future. It was an old agreement with Tanya that once we find Mary, we'll join her coven. I saw Alice getting stiff for a second.
"You are thinking about going to see a blond woman, why?" my sister asked.
"She's the leader of the family of vegetarians who we'll join," I replied.
"No, she isn't." Alice smiled. "Besides, don't interrupt me, I am trying to tell you a story, Bella! We can talk about it later."
"Please continue," I asked.
"Alright, so seeing as you both were now following this diet, and our family are too, the only reasonable decision was for me to start it as well. It was rather hard at first, I'll admit, but it did become easier with time, as I am sure it did for all of us. I was honestly not trying to spy on you two, I can't control what I see, but as the day of my meeting with Jasper came closer, so did my excitement. I had a feeling that today would be the best day of my life, and I was right. Not only did I found the love of my life, but also my sister who can tell me all about my human family and childhood. I really do prefer Alice though. I've lived as an Alice for what feels like my whole life, and Mary doesn't sound right. Sorry." She looked at me just like she did whenever she had done something wrong as a child.
"I have no problem calling you either, I am just so glad that we are finally together again."
"So am I." She squeezed my hand.
"So, if we are not moving in with Tanya, we will have to tell her in person. She would be very upset, and I would rather she hear it from me directly than through a phone call." I mentioned, and then replayed her words in my head. "Wait, if we are not joining the Denalis, then who?"
"His name is Carlisle, we'll find them in two years, that's all I know." She replied. Carlisle. That name I already knew. We were going to join the Cullen clan. Jasper smirked at the mention of the name and spoke.
"We better start packing for Alaska then, Tanya will be pissed."
Please review, it honestly makes me very happy, when I know what you think about the story so far.
