Warnings for this one: mentions of infidelity, other than that, none?

Rose nervously adjusted the collar of Jake's shirt one more time before opening the front door of her parents' house. She tried not to look at the spot in the front hall where her wedding picture used to hang. Six months after Truth Day, she and Duke spoke only through their lawyers and her parents hadn't stopped asking what had gone wrong. Rose knew that Rachelle hadn't, and wouldn't, let them know that Rose had been the downfall of the marriage but her parents had to, at least, suspect. Rose already had a new boyfriend. One where it was serious enough that she bring him to dinner when her sister was in town.

"Rosie? That you?"

"It's me, Dad," Rose called back.

She and Jake entered the warm kitchen, where Rose's parents were hard at work preparing dinner, while Rachelle sat at the island and sipped wine.

"Everyone, I would like you to meet Jake."

It was Rachelle that Rose watched the most because it was only Rachelle that knew the truth of what Jake and Rose had done. It was her approval that was needed because her parents would try so hard to like Jake, even if they hated him, simply because Rose had brought him home. Rachelle had decided to be hard to read tonight and she sipped her wine again.

"It's nice to meet you. I'm Carl, this is Melinda."

Rose reached for the wine glass Rachelle offered. "Did you bring this in with you?"

"Only the best for Mom." Rachelle raised her eyebrows at Jake, who was desperately trying to schmooze the parents. "How's he?"

"Everything I hoped he would be," Rose said. "I have regrets but choosing him isn't one of them."

Rachelle nodded and put the glass down, getting up from her seat. "Jake, hello!"

Rose watched Rachelle hug Jake and she felt her anxiety exhale. This was going to turn out just fine, she could tell.
