Rose tried not to fidget with the folds of her skirt as she waited for Duke. It had been a long time since she had felt this nervous for a first date and she found herself thinking such stereotypical thoughts: would he think that she was pretty? Was she dressed appropriately? Was he going to like her? Was she going to kiss him tonight, if things went well? Would he like a girl who kissed on the first date? She didn't know. She just knew that he'd made her laugh in line at the coffee shop on campus and she'd been impulsive when he'd asked for her number so he could ask her on a date.

He picked her up in an old, but not old enough to be classic car.

"I had to borrow it from my roommate," he confessed, "I don't have one of my own."

"That's okay," Rose said quickly. "I don't drive in the city either, I get it."

"I did spend all day cleaning it," Duke said, holding open the passenger seat door for her.

"That's very sweet."

"I didn't want you to think I was okay with dirt," Duke said.

She'd been talking about the door but it made her laugh all the same.

"So," she asked, when he got in the car and signaled back onto the street, "are you going to tell me where we're going?"

"Would you have more fun if you knew the destination?" Duke asked.

It was one of the things that she would come to love most about him - the way that he would say things in a way that would make her stop and revaluate everything, even though, to him, it was just the most obvious thing to stay.

"I don't think so," Rose finally admitted, although she was reluctant to do so. She was the type of woman who liked to know what was going on.

"So," Duke said, slowing at a red light and taking the chance to look at her, "where would you like to be going?"

"Somewhere I don't expect," Rose blurted, because it would be very disappointing he was like everyone else. But, also, maybe it didn't matter where they went, maybe, it would be about just going with him.

Duke laughed and, as though it weren't their first date and he'd done it a hundred times before, he reached out and took her hand, and Rose marveled at how well their fingers twined together.

"I hope I can surprise you."

But, he already had, just by being him.
