Rose tried to feel calm as she hid in the kitchen of Jake's apartment. She hadn't realized just how many people he'd invited for his birthday party and she hadn't realized how awkward she'd feel in a large group of his friends. Every time she introduced herself, she wondered if they knew that she was a cheater, if they knew she was still legally married. She grabbed herself a vodka soda from the ice bucket and popped the top, downing half of it one go, even though she knew it was a bad idea.
"Rose, come on, what are you doing?" Rachelle said.
"I'm the stupid twin anyway," Rose said, not turning around.
"I don't think you're stupid."
Chills went down Rose's back as she turned to see Haley, standing just behind Rachelle.
"Maybe a little stupid." Then there was Trixie, also in the doorway.
Rose had been introduced, briefly, to Haley and Trixie earlier in the evening but she hasn't really spoken to them. Tonight was supposed to be the night where she really got to know them but Rose had to admit that she was intimidated. She knew how important they were to Jake and she didn't know how to bear it if they didn't like her.
"But we get it."
"What do you mean? You get it?" Rose asked.
"We remember, well, I don't know about Haley," Trixie said, filling her red solo cup from the keg. "Spud and I, though, we remember the first life. Gramps and Fu too. It's hard to feel bad about your husband when we saw what giving you up did to Jake."
"I don't remember it well," Haley said. "It's like a book I read once. I know it happened but it didn't happen to me. Beer me, please, Trixie."
"What the hell is she talking about?" Rachelle asked.
Rose finished her drink and immediately opened other. It was the only secret she'd ever kept from her twin, only because she would sound insane. It had been another thing to feel guilty about but Rose hadn't felt like she'd been lying to Rachelle. She'd told her everything - except about the fact that Jake was a dragon and that in a past life she was a dragon slayer and they'd loved each other in that past life and that love had been so strong that they hadn't been able to stay away from another once they'd found each other again.
"You know any magic tricks, Rachelle?" Trixie asked in a way that sounded innocent but Rose knew was anything but.
"No," Rachelle said and then she laughed.
Rose felt like the floor was falling out from under her. She should be the one to tell Rachelle. She should be the one to phrase it and get it right.
"No one knows magic tricks," Rose said desperately. "Trixie's just trying to be funny."
"Come on," Haley said, "You're going to be family soon. She's going to be family soon, we can tell her."
"Yeah," Trixie said, joining in to tease Rose. "And I'm basically family. No secrets, right, Rach?"
Trixie threw an arm each around Rachelle and Rose, squeezing them tightly.
"Let's go sit!" Trixie announced and began to pull the twins off.
"Haley!" Rose cried, looking behind her. "Haley! Grab me another drink!"
"You got it!" Haley said back and raised a can of vodka soda in salute before following the group.
