Threat Level: Blackmail

Author's note: This story takes place in Season 4 right after Michael & Jan break up, with some slight variations of David Wallace's family details and path to becoming CEO.

David & Robin Wallace's home, Greenwich CT
A warm spring Sunday morning in late June
The French doors of their master suite balcony are wide open, allowing fresh air in – along with the Dunder Mifflin filming crew, thanks to super-zoom lens.

David Wallace, wearing a plain white undershirt and blue boxers, lounged comfortably in bed while reviewing work documents. Mounds of sumptuous bedding surrounded him, on which he precariously placed papers and notepads. From the slight smirk at the corner of his mouth, the numbers must have shown good profit margins for the first two quarters, which he planned to share with CEO Alan Brand next week.

Still smirking to himself, he called toward to bathroom, "Hey hon, have you thought about where you want to go for our twentieth next year?"

No response. Maybe Robin wasn't out of the shower yet.

"Feel free to pick something exotic. We should have plenty to spend," he tried again.

Another long pause, and then the bathroom door finally, slowly, crept open. Robin emerged looking as pale as a ghost, eyes looking as though she'd just seen one too. She froze in the doorway, waiting for David to notice.

At last he glanced up, doing a double-take at her fraught expression. "What's wrong?"

Without a word, she raised her right hand, which was shakily holding a thin white stick.

"…What's that?" asked David cautiously.

"You know what it is," she locked eyes with him. "And it's positive."

He blinked twice. "A-are you sure?"

Robin laughed. "I may not be a CFO, but I know how to count to two. There are two lines."

"How… when…"

"Last month when we stayed in the Poconos."

David's gaze drifted as he recalled the trip fondly. "Oh. But I thought… didn't the doctor tell you…?"

"Doctors don't know everything. Apparently I had one good egg left," Robin walked over to the bed and placed the test next to his pillow. He stared at it dumbly, as if he'd never seen one before in his life. After a minute, he seemed to process reality and collect himself a little.

"When is it due?" he asked without looking up from the stick.

"The middle of January, based on my cycle charts."

He nodded absently. "We don't have any… we, um, sold all the baby gear years ago."

"Then I guess we know what to get for Christmas, don't we?" Robin said with a smirk.

"Yeah," David exhaled.

Leaning down to kiss him, Robin steadied her own nerves by gripping his shoulder. "Hey. I love you. We can do this. We've done it twice before."

"I know, it's just been so long, and we're so much older now," he sighed. "We're going to be so tired. And…oh, no…" he suddenly looked very ill.

"What?"

He covered his eyes in shame. "I just realized – we're going to have to tell the kids."
