Chapter 1
Chip didn't know why he decided to be a hero now. He had never done anything heroic before, or more accurately, he hadn't done much of anything at all besides read comics and watch anime. He didn't know this person, and he had no reason to help this old man, much less risk his own life to save him.
That didn't matter when the man fall off the station platform and onto the tracks. At that moment he made the choice to act. Dropping his jacket he leaped down next to the elderly man, roughly gripped him by his arms then hastily assisted him towards to platform. Other bystanders were quick to grab hold of the old mans hands and were able to pull him to safety, but by then the train was closing in too fast. Chip had mere seconds to glance at the train speeding towards him. Then a nothingness.
"How long are you going to lie there?"
Chip opened his eyes, instantly recognizing the voice as King Kai's. He sat up, his head swiveled around taking in his new environment before staring wide eyed at the Kai. The God's eyes remained hidden behind his glasses but his brows were furrowed in confusion.
"Um…What…how?" Chip couldn't find his words as he continued to glance between the tiny planet and the little blue God.
"This maybe overwhelming, but… you died." King kai watched as Chip gazed upward above his head and gasped as he found a golden halo floating there.
"But, it seems the right deities witnessed your pure-hearted act, this is your reward for your good deed." Chip could hardly believe what he was hearing. Had he really been moved into this fantasy reality of Gods and warriors. It seemed so unreal to Chip, something this crazy could never happen, never mind happening to him.
"There's a catch." Chip stopped his thoughts as he heard those words, dread now slowly filling him.
"W-What is it?" His voice shook, Chip really had no idea what kind of catch there could be to this situation, what would they want from a seventeen year old boy?
"You are aware of the Tournament of Power, right?" Dread now filled Chip completely. He gulped quietly before nodding yes with his head. Chip had read the Manga for Super, so he knew how the tournament was supposed to end. At least how it was supposed to end without him involved, but he had no clue if his presence would change anything or not.
"If Universe 7 wins you will be fully revived and freely live in this reality." King Kai spoke before he turned and took a few steps towards his house. "And if you fail… your soul, along with the rest of Universe 7 will be erased from existence forever."
This was a lot for Chip to take in all at once. He had died; been brought back in a different reality, which until recently he believed to be completely fictional, and then told he might be erased permanently. Chip stood up, looked himself up and down. He tried to focus his racing thoughts. Moments passed before Chip decided on to respond..
"Do I even have a choice in this, I mean… what happens if I say no?" Chip eyes settled on the Kai as he listened for his response.
"If you refuse then you will be returned to your own world at the moment you were taken." King Kai rested his hands behind his back as he finished. The Kai could tell Chip wasn't very pleased with the choice presented to him.
Chip scowled at the options. He realized that there really wasn't a choice to be made. It was either go back and die again or take his chances by fighting in the tournament. Though, Chip didn't think he would be any help at all. I've never even been in a fight before. He thought, how could I stand a chance against even the weakest fighters? King Kai spoke again interrupting his thoughts,
"I can tell you're worried about the power gap between you and the warriors from other universes. But I believe you're stronger than you realize." King Kai turned back to face the teen then continued, "Did you know my planet has ten times the gravity of Earth, and yet it didn't faze you when you woke up or even when you stood."
King Kai was right, Chip stood there as if he were standing on Earth. Chip looked himself over once more, he didn't feel stronger. He paced a few steps to the left of King Kai towards the 1957 red Chevrolet Bel Air which was parked near the house, there was no strain on his body in the slightest. He crouched down low before leaping into the air, he sent himself a few stories up before coming back down. Chip landed hard flat on his feet with a thud. He was never capable of that before.
"I should also mention you also have a year train before the tournament." King Kai added.
"Train?" Chip cocked his head towards the Kai
"Yes of course! You didn't think we'd throw you in the deep end with nothing did you?" The Kai chuckled, "I would be training you personally."
Chip hesitated before speaking, "Do you think I can really get strong enough to put up a fight in the tournament?"
"I do." King Kai continued, "I'll be honest, it'll be hell. But I sense great untapped potential within you, I believe if we hone your body and focus almost solely on your ki control until the tournament plus a few lessons with the Kaio-ken. We will be able to draw out that tremendous power. If there's time I might even teach you the Spirit Bomb. There's one issue with this method of training, you won't be able to get any actual combat experience until you're in the tournament."
King Kai truthfully did believe in the boys potential. The potential he sensed in Chip was incredible, and would be a greatly needed if this universe was to survive.
"Fine…I'm in." Chip finally decided. He figured that as long as he didn't change the established course of events too much, then universe 7's odds of winning should still be decent.
"When do we start training?"
"Right now, follow me." King Kai began walking to his garage on the other side of the house from they stood.
"First, we work on your body. Although it is impressive you can withstand the gravity here, you'll need a little more… oomph if you want to compete with some of our heavy hitters."
"Like Goku?" Chip asked as they approached and opened the buildings door.
"Yes, in fact he's trained with these in the past." The God shifted through some boxes before he pulled out what looked like four leg warmers. Chip recognized them as the weights Goku wore when he trained with King Kai after he died fighting Cell. "Put these on your arms and legs, then meet me out front."
King Kai walked out of the building, leaving Chip to put on the weights. They fit snuggly around his limbs, he expected them to have some weight by default, but they didn't seem to weigh anything. Chip walked out, and immediately noticed King Kai had someone else with him. Chip looked at the monkey as it entertained itself by hopping around next to King Kai. The Deity noticed Chip as he approached.
"Good they fit. Bubbles say high to Chip. Chip this is Bubbles." The monkey waved slightly before he returned to his own actions. Chip gave a weak smile before waving back slowly, he felt odd waving to a monkey.
"Now then, let's begin." King Kai brought his fists palms up to his sides, jutting both elbows backwards. He then hesitated.
"Why don't we do something about your clothes first." The statement caused Chip to inspect his cloths.
"I don't really have anything else," It was true, He was wearing what he had when he died, everyday sneakers with jeans and blue t-shirt. Also his jacket and he didn't even die with it."Do you have any spare cloths?" He asked.
"Even better." He stuck out his index firing a beam at Chip. The energy formed around his body which caused a tingling sensation, then with a glow his cloths changed to a light red sweat suit. The Kai's insignia was present on the back. The material was soft on Chip, light too as if it was a second skin.
"Wow!" Chip was amazed with what he witnessed, seeing these powers in the manga or show was one thing but to actually experience it. It was incredible. King Kai returned to his previous stance his fist tucked to his side.
"Now, Brace yourself." The tubby Kai had just finished his sentence when he thrusted out his palms and shouted, "Ten tons!"
Chip barely registered what he said when the weights suddenly increased. His arms were quickly forced down to his sides, their sudden combined weight caused his legs to buckle. He was able to stabilize in a slightly hunched over squat like pose, that didn't ease the pain he felt, like his limbs were going to be torn off from the sheer weight.
"Good Chip. With that your hellish training begins…So catch my pet monkey"
"Really?" Chip looked at King Kai then back to the monkey, who had begun to saunter away from him. This was the hellish training, he thought to himself, monkey-tag.
With a massive grunt of effort Chip managed to straighten his posture. Sweat began to seep from his brow. The earthling tried to take a step, but that small shift in in weight resulted in him losing his balance. With all the weight Chip was unable to react and was sent face first into the dirt. The fall only hurt him emotionally. Chip dragged his arms closer to him, placing his palms down he managed to push himself up enough to drop his knees underneath his chest. Now on all fours Chip struggled to stand. At this moment Bubbles had turned back and begun dancing around the poor boy, as if to taunt him. Another forceful grunt came from Chip as he pushed off his hands, he now rested in a kneeling position arms sagging at his sides.
Bubbles stopped out reach of Chip before he lifted his arms above his head and clapped repeatedly then hopped side to side to the rhythm him of his clap, switching the leg he stood on as he did so.
"Ooh!" The monkey hollered. "Oh aah ah ah oh!" Bubbles continued to taunt him.
This wasn't going the way Chip had wanted. He was stuck kneeling with Bubbles mocking him with unrestricted movements. Every clap frustrated Chip more and more. Chip was trying his absolute hardest to maintain this position but the monkey seemed to be entertained by his struggle. This made him want to lunge forward to wrangle the damned animal, an impossible task as he couldn't do so much as lift his arms. Chip's helplessness in this situation began to anger him.
Chip thought this himself, I have to get stronger before the tournament! I don't have time to be mocked by Bubbles! With a shout he forced himself to his feet. His knees bent so far that his butt almost touched the grass beneath him, he attempted to go higher. Doing so made his knees almost gave out, he shakily forced his way to another squat pose.
"Focus on your ki." King Kai interjected.
Chip attempted to squeeze out a response between his clenched teeth, "And how…Do… I do that!"
"Visualize the air entering your lungs, filling your chest with heat. That heat is your strength. Imagine the feeling of that heat spreading through your limbs, and into every cell your body." King Kai finished by resting his arms behind his back.
Chip followed his teacher's instructions to the best of his abilities. Closing his eyes, he pushed the strain of the weights and the aching of his muscles to the back of his mind. The boy inhaled then exhaled repeatedly, he felt a heat build and spread into his limbs. Soon he could feel heat across his entire body. Chip opened his eyes wide, surrounding his entire being was a blueish aura. He sluggishly lifted his right hand up to his face, then inspected his arm closely. The weights were still far light, but they were at the very least bearable.
The strengthened earthling looked away from his arm towards Bubbles. The monkey had noticed that his advantage over Chip was disappearing so he decided to take a head start, and began running away.
"Oh no you don't!" Chip yelled as he started after the monkey. Forced to take short stomps instead of steps Chip couldn't close the distance between them.
He stretched his arms straight out to either side, causing them to act as counters weights, which helped keep his balance. He continued to stomp after the monkey with King Kai watching. The God was impressed with how quickly Chip was able to grasp the basics of ki. Maybe this wasn't such a long-shot after all, thought the Kai to himself optimistically. He just hoped that his trading with the Kaio-ken would be just as fruitful. King kai continued to watch Chip as he disappeared over the horizon of the planet, his grunts of exertion became quieter.
