"Shayera you're being ridiculous," John firmly said to her with a frown as the two were arguing in the hallway of the Metro Tower. "It's not going to do anything to you."
"I don't care about what happens to me. You are not sticking something on me that's going to send soundwaves through my body. Do I make myself clear?" Shayera narrowed her eyes as she scowled.
"Ultrasounds are not dangerous Shayera. Humans have them all the time," he argued.
"Well I'm not a human in case you've forgotten John. Do you have any idea what an ultrasound could do to a Thanagarian?" When John didn't immediately answer, Shayera placed her hands on her hips, "That's what I thought."
John continued to frown as he crossed his arms over his chest, "Eventually I'm going to talk you into this."
"No you are not."
"Yes I am."
"You'll have to drag me there."
"Aren't you supposed be on monitor duty Shayera?" A deadpan voice asked. The two turned to see Batman behind them.
Shayera shook her head, "I traded with Steel. He took my morning shift and I got his night shift today."
"What Shayera isn't saying is that she was up all night sick and hardly got any sleep. I wasn't about to let her go on monitor duty first thing in the morning so I was the one who called Steel. Right now she should be home, sleeping," he said as he looked at Shayera with a pointed look, causing her to roll her eyes.
Batman remained silent for a moment before he spoke, "Ultrasounds are perfectly safe Shayera. I'd suggest you get one."
"Told you," John said to her before grunting as she roughly elbowed him in the side. "What was that for?"
"For being annoying and don't follow me!" She snapped at him before she turned around and began to storm down the hallway before they heard her snarl, "Goddamn son of a bitch!"
John let out a defeated sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck, "Dammit Virgil wasn't kidding. That's not cranky, that's downright ferocious. You should have seen her this morning. I thought she was actually going to deck me because I didn't put creamer or sugar in her coffee."
Batman raised an eyebrow under his cowl, "You knew the risk. It's not like you didn't have prior warning. Besides with how temperamental Shayera already is it shouldn't have been surprising."
John gave him an unamused look, "I didn't anticipate for Shayera to become that irritable. I mean I know Shayera has some anger issues already so I thought she'd just get a little more annoyed than normal but this...this is insane."
"And here I thought her knowing that she passed that civics test would have put her in a good mood," Batman sarcastically stated.
"Yeah that lasted for like two days," John stated with an eyeroll.
Shayera rolled her eyes as she sat in the rec room. Unfortunately for her Wally, Diana, Courtney, Booster Gold, and Shining Knight were already there as the speedster was making them sit through a movie marathon. So Shayera soon found herself on one of the couches, sitting in-between Diana and Courtney, as Wally was sifting through the DVDs. Really Shayera had gone in there hoping to have some peace and quiet. She was hardly in the mood to watch any movies.
"Wally I am not in the mood to watch one of those stupid, romantic movies," Shayera said to him as she frowned.
"Shay, come on, The Notebook is a classic movie that everyone should watch at least once in their life," he told her, crossing his arms over his chest. "Everyone here but me and Courtney haven't seen it yet. That's the whole reason we're all here. You just happen to come at the perfect time."
Shayera raised an eyebrow and looked over at the others, "How were you all roped into this?"
"Because I absolutely love this movie!" Courtney clasped her hands together. "It's so romantic. I can only dream of having such a beautiful romance one day."
Booster shrugged, "The movie was lost by the time the 25th century comes around. I've heard a lot about it since coming to this time period so I wanted to see it for myself."
"I would like to see something not with that Clint Eastwood for once," Shining Knight mentioned. "Most of my movie watching experience has come from Vigilante's, as he would say, state-of-the-art big screen TV with the surround sound."
Shayera then looked over to Diana, "And how were you talked into this Princess?"
Diana lightly chuckled, "What can I say? I suppose the phrase I'm looking for is that I'm a sucker for these types of movies. Plus Flash also said this was a very emotional movie that makes you feel everything all at once."
Shayera shook her head as she rolled her eyes, "I somehow doubt a movie can be that emotional. As much as I love Titanica I still don't find that awe-inspiring as you said it would be."
"For the fifth time it's Titanic," Wally corrected her. "Besides this is just like Titanic. Everyone has to watch it at least once in their life."
"Whatever but you said that about 50 First Dates and I strongly doubt that everyone needed to watch that. Why can't we just watch an action movie? We still haven't watched that second Die Hard movie and I really want to see it," Shayera said, looking over to Wally.
Wally let out a sigh as he shook his head in disbelief, "50 First Dates is an excellent movie and I still don't understand how you don't like it. Besides I would like to have a nice, peaceful, and quiet afternoon with my friends and that is not going to be achieved by watching Bruce Willis kill people. Shayera I promise you that if you watch this movie with us then it will definitely be worth your while."
It didn't take much else than that to convince the Thanagarian. It never did. After all, Wally was almost impossible to resist. Shayera let out a small huff of annoyance before agreeing, "Fine I'll watch The Notebook with you guys but I get to pick the movie next time, deal?"
"Why of course, Shayera, it would only be fair," Wally agreed with a triumphant smile as he inserted the DVD and zipped back to the adjacent couch, flopping on the end spot. He then reached over the side and picked up an over-sized bag of gummy worms and a big container of popcorn. "This is gonna be a perfect afternoon."
This wasn't the first time Wally had made Justice League members watch movies with him. Often times Wally found certain members' lack of knowledge in movies to be simply appalling and that he needed to remedy the situation immediately. So at least once or twice a week, Wally took the time out so that they could watch specific movies that he claimed were essential for every living person to see.
If Shayera was perfectly honest she sometimes didn't even pay that much attention to some of the more boring movies but Wally really seemed like he wanted her to watch this movie so she promised herself that she would pay attention this time or at least try to.
Wally then snapped his fingers together and reached back over the side of the couch, holding two boxes of tissues up, "In case you guys need them. I know I will. Like I warned, this movie can get quite emotional."
"It's just a dumb movie," Shayera mumbled under her breath as she rolled her eyes. She really didn't understand how people could get so emotional invested during movies. They were just fictional characters on a screen. Sure they were played by real people but the characters themselves weren't.
Two hours later, Shayera Hol was most certainly not crying. It was simply that the bright glare from the television screen combined with the contrast of the dark room had made her eyes water. That was it really. Courtney and Diana, on the other hand, were both wiping at their eyes with the tissues Wally had previously provided. Booster Gold and Shining Knight weren't crying but Shayera could see the forlorn expressions on their faces. Wally was sniffling and wasn't even trying to hide it.
The speedster then looked over at Shayera and sat up when he saw the tears running down her cheeks. "Did I not say you would need the tissues?" Wally rhetorically asked before passing the other tissue box over to the Thanagarian before he ran over to turn the lights back on.
Shayera accepted the box reluctantly and took a fistful of tissues to wipe her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, whatever, I'm holding this against you forever Wally," she quietly said, though there was no heat behind her words.
Wally chuckled as he looked over to the others, "Aren't you guys all glad you've seen it now? It truly is a wonderful love story."
"But it's so sad," Shayera argued, looking up at Wally. "Allie forgot everything that happened between them and then they just die in the end."
Courtney nodded, "That's the magic of it though. Even though Allie forgot everything, Noah stood by her through it all. That's why it's romantic."
"I guess," Shayera sighed. "You humans are strange. Why would you want to willingly watch something so sad?"
Wally shrugged, "It's just the way we are I guess. Wait until I make you watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It has a happy ending, I promise, plus it's funny."
Shayera groaned, "Haven't we watched enough romantic comedies already? I'm sure there are more action movies I haven't seen. You better not be hiding any really good ones from me."
Wally held up his hands and shook his head innocently, "I would never do such a thing. We could watch the Harry Potter series next. I really think you'll love it. It has the Basilisk, Voldemort, Hagrid, dragons, Professor McGonagall, quidditch, Snape, and Death Eaters. You liked Lord of the Rings so you'll definitely like Harry Potter, trust me."
Shayera gave Wally a bemused look as she tilted her head, "I don't understand any of what you just said but I'll watch it."
"Oh I love the Harry Potter books and movies!" Courtney exclaimed. "You so have to invite me to that!"
"Books?" Shayera asked. "Okay I'm definitely in then. Just get me those books first and then we can watch the movies."
"Perfect," Wally grinned. "But I think we have other things to tend to first, since you agreed to watch a sappy movie with us. It's only fair we watch Die Hard 2 next. Everyone free on Thursday same time?"
"But Die Hard 2 is a Christmas movie," Courtney argued.
"It most certainly is not," Wally frowned.
Booster Gold looked back and forth between the two before shrugging, "I've seen Die Hard and I gotta agree. Definitely a Christmas movie."
Shayera raised an eyebrow, "I don't see how. It's an action movie that happens to be set during Christmas time. That'll all."
Diana looked over to Shining Knight with a raised eyebrow, "Do you know anything about this?"
Shining Knight shook his head, "I am afraid not m'lady. I am just as lost I fear."
Shayera rolled her eyes as she stood from the couch, "You guys can watch whatever. My back has had enough of sitting on that damn couch. Plus I need to go get lunch."
"After you ate all of my gummy worms and popcorn," Wally said with a pout. "You could have shared."
Shayera smirked as she placed her hands on her hips, "Not my problem you didn't guard them."
John was sitting alone in the cafeteria when he felt a hand glide across his left shoulder. He looked up to see Shayera smirking at him as she sat down in the chair right next to him. She then kissed him on the cheek.
John lightly smiled, "You're certainly in a better mood compared to earlier."
"Sorry about this morning," she mumbled before pulling him into a kiss.
John then smirked as he broke the kiss, "Don't be, it's fine Shayera."
"You can thank Wally and him making me watch that depressing romance movie."
The Green Lantern chuckled, "Which one was it this time?"
"The Notebook," she replied. "It was extremely sad and even made me cry."
He shrugged and then lightly nodded, "I can see why. That movie is just a bombshell of emotions."
Shayera tilted her head, "You've seen it?"
John hesitated before answering, "Yeah and it didn't help that it came out right after the Thanagarian Invasion happened."
Shayera visibly winced, "I can see why it was even worse back then to watch."
"I didn't know it was going to be that bad otherwise I wouldn't have watched it."
Shayera nodded before going silent for a moment, "Do you think we'll be like them?"
"Like who?"
"Allie and Noah," Shayera said as she looked away. "They stayed together to the very end no matter what came between them. Even after what happened to Allie and her memories, Noah never gave up on her and stayed with her even though she didn't know who he was anymore. That's pure love and dedication to stay with someone through all of that and not just give up on them. I can only imagine how many people have given up due to the hopelessness of their situation."
"I think I'd be more concerned if you had Alzheimer's or dementia and we let you keep your mace," John quipped as Shayera rolled her eyes.
"I'm trying to be serious here John," she sternly retorted.
"I know," John nodded before continuing. "If that ever did happen then I'd never leave your side just like how Noah didn't leave Allie and I know you wouldn't leave me either. We've been through worse together Shay and look where we are today."
Shayera lightly smiled, "That is true. I think we've been through the worst life can throw at us and we still ended up together in the end."
"Married life is going to be a breeze for us Shay, trust me," John said to her but then paused for a moment. "That reminds me, since you finally got your citizenship, Wally wants to throw us an engagement party before we officially get married."
Shayera raised an eyebrow, "A party where I can't drink? Yeah that sounds like a real blast. What does Wally have planned for us or do I even want to know?"
John shrugged, "I don't know. You never know what you're getting with him. Though he mentioned something about asking Bruce if we could use his mansion."
Shayera laughed at the mere mention, "I'm sorry but there is no way in hell that Bruce will agree to that, especially since Wally is the one asking. How many people does Wally think he's going to invite to this thing anyway that he wants to use Bruce's place?"
"He said only the founders but he thought we all might like the privacy of Bruce's estate," John replied. "He said he's willing to invite anyone we want."
"I'm good with only the seven of us. We don't need the Justice League there. Besides, we don't have anyone else to invite really. That's pretty sad when you think about it," she said with a chuckle. "We are so pathetic that it's not even funny."
"At least we can be pathetic together," he stated, kissing her cheek. "You in a good enough of a mood that I can talk you into that ultrasound yet?"
Shayera humorously shook her head, "Nice try Lantern but that's still not happening."
