TIME TO PARTY!
Shouted Ponyhead as she and her friends celebrated the expulsion of Miss Heinous and the takeover of St. 'O's.
She and the other 'wayward' Princesses had completely taken over the joint all the robots had been reprogrammed to be their servants...it was a nonstop party!
Even her main squeeze B-fly was here! ...well...her AND Earth Turd...but you couldn't have everything ...or at the very least eat so much sugar you no longer feel anything...or the buzzing in your skull overshadows all else...
It had been a week since 'Princess Turdinia'(AKA Marco Diaz) with the help of Princess Star Butterfly had freed Ponyhead and staged a revolution to overthrow Miss Heinous.
This party- although 'off the hook' -would've largely been irrelevant in the grand scheme of things in the universe we all know and love. Marco would later have to go to the hospital for red-tide poisoning and some ambulances would've got overturned...but nothing too big...
No, the Star of the Prime universe would barely remember such an unimportant party after her sugar rush kicked in...she would've kept fighting monsters, never truly take her princess duties seriously until much later, and go on a bunch of adventures that would eventually lead to the end of the age of magic and Queens...
This is not that universe...
Sometimes all it can take to the change the world...is the flapping of a butterflies wing...or in this case...a SONG...
In the Prime timeline Jana would just bring her usual mix to play...but some strange interference on her computer would force her to reshuffle at the last minute...and accidentally download a couple new songs she'd been meaning to listen to but never got around to...
Such as...
Far from home, a man with a mission
In the heat of the glistening sun
In the heart of ancient tradition
This man's journey has only begun
For a moment everyone paused and listened in on this strange new music...
Lead the charge, a raider has entered the battlefield
Sabotage, the game is about to unfold
"Wow, Janna! This rocks! What is it?"
As the darkness falls and Arabia calls
One man spreads his wings, as the battle begins
May the land lay claim on to Lawrence name
Seven pillars of wisdom lights the flame
"It's a new band named Sabaton, must've brought it by mistake-
A revolt to gain independence
Hide and seek, hunters hot on their trail
Joined their ranks, obtained their acceptance
Side by side raid the Ottoman rail
"Don't care! I love it!" Said Star as she jammed to it...
Lead the charge, Tafilah, Medina, Damascus calls
Sabotage, demolish the bridges to dust
After the war has been won, deception or treason?
Who can tell?
Who stood to gain?
Who stood to loose?
Who did the dying?
Betrayal of trust from within or compelled?
The pillars of wisdom can tell
Back home where a new life awaits, whispers of past
The sands of Arabia calling
And so they rocked out the night...
Marco still suffered from red-tide poisoning, his situation was made worse by his ambulance being overturned- with him inside it -and Star would still mostly forget this night...EXCEPT for those wonderful songs...she would later ask for Janna to make copies of them...
...
"Wait...so not only was he my age when he conquered part of Europe but he did it WITHOUT magic?" Asked Star amazed as Marco explained to her the meaning behind the Sabaton song 'Carolus Rex'.
She and her friends had been surprised to learn many of the historical undertones of many of the songs they'd been enjoying recently...and were even MORE amazed that it actually made history INTERESTING.
'History' had only ever seemed like a bunch of old, stuffy books talking about things that happened before they were born...and who cared about that?
But these songs...they actually made them WANT to learn about history! As a result, many of their history grades went up...
Although Star felt confused by some things that she did not fully understand, such as the term... Na-zi? She only knew that it must be a kind of insult, given how her human friends reacted to the word.
Even so, that did not diminish her excitement. Fantasies of destroying an army of monsters in a Glorious War danced in her head...
Until it all came crashing down...
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Songs of the like of 'In Flanders fields' and 'The War to End All Wars' completely shattered all those dreams...especially the last one as it had a text that Marco- reluctantly -translated:
"At 11 am on the 11th of month 11, The End of The War To End All Wars, was produced with the Armistice of Compiegne in 1918, which was replaced the following year with the ´Treaty of Versailles´, but still Thus the damage was already done, and the impact of The Great War was felt throughout the world, from 15 to 20 million perished, almost half of them civilians, with another 23 million injured, The old empires collapsed, that is to say that this War represented the end of The Ottoman Empire, The Astro-Hungarian Empire, The British Empire and THE German Empire, new countries were formed and others became independent, world power changed hands, a whole generation of ideological men and women was lost, many for the permanence of death, and the survivors for disappointment and cynicism, ´the lost generation´, this is how they are known"
Star is horrified...so many lives lost...so much destroyed...never in Mewni history had ANY war come even CLOSE to such losses...
She wonders outloud what kind of magic could unleash such havoc...and then Marco flatly reminds her that Earth had no magic...
Star is floored by the revelation that all that carnage and horror was caused with NO MAGIC...just human ingenuity and science...
"Why did they do it?!, Why didn't anyone stop these catastrophes?!, What kind of sick people thinks this was a good idea!?, How ..." She stops abruptly in the middle of his outburst... had just realized something very horrible, and she looks at herself.
"How ... how sick must I have been to think this was a good idea?"
She frantically asked Marco why such a travesty occurred, why would people do this... Marco...Marco couldn't answer these questions...how could he? People far older then him were still struggling to answer such queries!
In any case, he didn't have much time to think of an answer because Star then had yet another epiphany...
"Wait...WWI? Why would they call it that...MARCO WAS THERE MORE THEN ONE WAR?!" Marco just groans...
...
75 million people...75 million people died in the SECOND world war...and most not just from the war...no, if anything many got an even WORSE fate...
The Holocaust...
...United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM)...
This was the building Star found herself going to..and she learned it all...
She walked through the various exhibits that showed the rise of Nazism...the spread of antisemitism...the ghettos..the gas chamber...she cried with several children who had just seen the 'Remember the Children: Daniel's Story' exhibit... She visited the hall of remembrance...lit candles with others...gazed at the eternal flame...and just sat in deep reflection at all the names of the dead for several hours...
The unheard of sight of Star standing still for so long and so quietly...concerned many of her friends...
Star was eventually forced to leave when the place closed down for the night...
...
Star locked herself up in her room for a week or so...and refused to come out...
Well, except that one day where she got the idea to go to father time to convince him to stop the great wars from ever happening...only to realize he was too busy enjoying his 'new ride' and was too fast to catch no matter how hard she tried...
...
But then Star's spirits lifted when she saw it was time for her FAVORITE holiday...
Mewnipendence day...
...
Star sits on the couch and holds a large sword, and desperately tries to get the attention of a crowd of people: Sensei Brantley, Miss Skullnick, StarFan13, Marco, Alfonzo, Ferguson, Janna, Ed, Francis, etc.
"Okey, quiet everyone, QUIET! Quiet. I assume you all brought your swords..."
Everyone just looks at her baffled, "Uh... Wha?" Asked Marco finally.
Star Drops her weapon in annoyance, "It said on the invitation: You're supposed to bring a sword..."
Alfonzo raises up the card; "I was little confused by your invitation..."
Miss Skullnick grabs the invitation card, "I am not confused, this is clearly a drawing of meat, I came for the meat..."
"I think everyone is just wondering why they're here..." Admitted Marco, he was happy to see Star out of her room and enthusiastic again after all these weeks...but that didn't make him any less confused...
"Ahh, It's the 37th of Gravnogk? Mewnipendence Day?" Said rehtorically as if that explained everything...
Seeing how people STILL didn't understand, Star just rolls her eyes and grabs an explanitory pop-up book to show them.
"A long time ago, arrived the first settlers of Mewni- Moves a tiny explanatory boat while making boat noises -Modest people with noble pursuits: Life, Liberty and Corn- Unfolds the page while explaining -But the wicked monsters rose up and attacked the innocent Mewmans to re-steal Mewni for themselves- She finishes unfolding that page, and then passes to the next one. Where a Queen and some peasants can be seen -So the Queen used her magic to turn the simple peasants into a fearsome army!" The effects of the magic are seen while Star unfolds the page. "And there there was fighting..., fighting, fighting, fighting,, fighting, fighting- Star impatiently passes trough the "Fighting" pages quickly, without explaining them -and the Mewmans won!" Star stops at the presumably last page, one that shows Star's Family Palace and its tiny surroundings. "Tadaah!" Star unfolds tiny celebration fireworks while making little explosive noises.
"But wait... You just blew past all the important stuff!" Said Marco Referring to the war pages.
Star is about to dismiss this...then she realized he was right...she'd always blown past the 'unimportant, boring, bits' before...but now she had a far greater appreciation for history...
"Uh...okay. Maybe your right Marco...I mean...this IS an important holiday...I should make it as historically accurate as possible... Okay, everyone else get ready while me and Marco look through this!"
"So can I be Mewman-
"Your a monster, that's why you were invited." Said Star to Skullnick bluntly.
"Dang it."
...
The reading...didn't go well. Oh, it started out wonderfully for Star at first.. Turns out the Mewman publishers have VERY lax censorship standards...so mush glorious violence and bloodshed in whimsical pop-up form!
But while Star was elated...Marco only grew more uncomfortable and concerned as they continued to read...
"Uh...Star? I know the monsters are the bad guys and all...but this just seems unfair..." He slides the book back to her..."
Star closely examines the part Marco points out confused. "Unfair?"
Having been forced to review a lot of... morbid historical topics with Star recently...Marco now had more then enough information to point things out...
Like how there was striking similarities between this story of 'new arrivals coming to a new land for a better life and fighting off hostile monsters'...and another story of a bunch of colonists coming to new land and wiping out the natives...
Same story...different versions...if you think about it...
Star tried to deny it...she'd been so certain that Mewni was better then earth since it never had anything like a 'great war'...but the more she thought about it...
Did a massacre really need to be BIG to be horrible?
These thought weighed heavy on her mind as preparations for the reenactment completed...
Marco told her that she didn't have to go through with it...that they can just skip toward the feasting...
But Star was determined to see this through...she needed to see this for herself...she needed PROOF that her people weren't like those...those...MONSTERS.
Star desperately put away images of the holocaust museum to focus on the fight...which she immediately regretted...
Marco was right...this WAS unfair...this...this was just WRONG!
The more Star watched...the heavier her heart became...she was so distraught she never noticed her wand was about to be stolen...
BAM!
Thankfully a stray warnicorn blast knocked 'Ferguson' away...
Star is horrified at 'Ferguson's' injury, stops the fight and sobs over 'Ferguson', apologizing for how unsafe and unfair this battle was for the monster side...
And then Ferguson pops out of the bushes...
The now exposed Buff Frog makes a break for it. Years of combat training prompted Star to start to aim her shot...but then...she let him go...
...
All around her people were feasting and celebrating...but Star was just sadly picks at her food...deep in thought...
Marco is about to say something about the accuracy of the book...but then sees Stars sad expression and decides to just be quiet and let her have her space...
Deciding she's not hungry, Star takes a walk...and just happens upon a depressed Buff Frog sitting in a tree.
Feeling bad, Star is about to just leave him some corn...and then realizes... 'wait...is that really enough?'...
She thinks on the Monster Massacre...of past monster Massacres...of all the things Marco pointed out was similar to genocide of the native Americans...as well as an old saying that popped up during her research of Earth history...
"There are three sides to every story: Your side, your enemies side and the TRUTH."
Buff frog just sits sadly in the tree. His job may have sucked...but it was all he had...where would he live now? How could he afford food?
click
Buff frog looks over in surprise at the plate of corn placed at his side...his surprise only got greater at the sight of Star Butterfly...
"We need to talk..."
