Mystic Falls, 2010.
NEW DAY NEW PROBLEM. That was basically how things had been around lately. Bella understood that life was never easy, but this had become too much, even for her. But since she was never a quitter, she just tried to suck it all up.
"Isobel just showed up at the front doorstep."
"What's she doing here?"
"I don't know. That's what I'm gonna go find out."
She secretly overheard her brother's conversation from her room. It wasn't difficult at all to do that when she had a supernatural hearing.
"I don't think you should tell her that I'm here."
Her eyebrows raised when she heard Katherine joined the conversation.
"What? Why?"
"It's better if she and John not know I stayed in town after I got out."
"You're the one in cahoots with them. You made a deal with John that almost got me killed."
"I did what I had to do to get out of the tomb. Now I'm reconsidering my alliance."
That somehow sounded really fishy in Bella's ears.
"What do you know?"
"I know that I want Klaus dead, which puts me squarely on Team You. Besides, if you two ever need me to swap places with Elena again... the less people know that I'm here, the better."
Now Bella was positive that Katherine was up to something. She just needed to find out what it was and she had to make sure it wasn't going to happen. Katherine couldn't win again, not this time.
She was quite sure that both of her brothers were also aware of this. But they got their hands full with finding a way to save Elena right now. That was why she had to take matter into her own hands and started secretly following Katherine.
Her suspicions were proven correct when she discovered Katherine's little meet up with a woman at a foreclosed house in town. After eavesdropping the first part of their conversation from afar, Bella quickly figured out who that woman was.
"You were right. I couldn't get anywhere near Klaus. But I found my way to someone in his trusted circle. One of his witches."
She quickly straightened herself back in the car seat as their conversation just started getting interesting.
Katherine chuckled and mumbled in her lazy tone, "Klaus and his witches."
"He said that Klaus is willing to grant you your freedom if we deliver the moonstone and the doppelganger."
"I can get the moonstone."
"You know, Katherine, you'll be betraying your Salvatore boys again."
"I was more than willing to play it their way if I had to, but they're floundering. Their witches has lost her powers and they've used their only weapon to kill Elijah. If I stick with them, I'm dead. You showing up changes everything."
As expected from a traitorous bitch like Katherine. She couldn't say she was surprised since she already saw that coming.
Now that she learned what Katherine was up to, she quickly drove back to her house. Both of the moonstone and the doppelganger were there, so that was most likely where Katherine was going after this.
Bella knew her only chance of stopping Katherine was to do it secretly. She knew she could beat Katherine only if the bitch didn't see her coming. All she needed was an element of surprise. And to get that she had to make sure no one would suspect what she was up. Therefore, she needed to make them believe she was busy doing something else today.
Seeing Katherine walked out of the study room after Damon made it clear that they didn't trust her at all, Bella decided it was a right time to make a move. As she walked past the study room, she pretended to play with her car keys while her other hand pulled out her phone from her hand bag.
"Now where are you going?"
Bella stopped walking as soon as she heard Damon's question for her, just as she had expected.
"Caroline called," she answered and turned her body to face him who was sitting on one of the couch. "She said she needed help with Matt."
An imaginary frown appeared on Damon's forehead. "Since when did you start hanging out with the other blondie?"
"Would you rather me hanging out with that bitch?" she questioned back, hand ponting to where Katherine had just gone.
"That bitch has a name!" Katherine shouted from the other room.
She rolled her eyes and shouted back, "And nobody cares!"
The lovebirds who was sitting on the other couch, Stefan and Elena, found that somehow quite amusing as they started chukling.
"No, Caroline's fine," Damon finally answered her previous question after pretending to think about it.
"Um, if you want to help Caroline with Matt, try not to use any violent, okay?" Stefan suddenly asked. "And keep me posted."
This made Bella scoff, "Seriously, you two have to stop telling me to behave because I've done nothing but being a good girl since I arrived here."
She turned her body back and was ready to leave, but Elena suddenly called, "Um, Bella?" She lazily turned back at her and raised an eyebrow. "Thanks for willing to help."
Even though Elena hung out at her house almost every day, they rarely interacted. And it was all because Bella had avoided her on purpose. Somehow she just didn't like that girl very much. Probably got something to do with the fact she was putting her bothers' life in danger.
"Yeah, whatever," she replied indifferently. "I have to go."
Of course Bella wasn't completely honest with all of that. Caroline did ask her help with Matt, but since she had more important business to do, she had to refuse to help.
For a while, she decided to just watch everything from afar. She watched how Isobel and Katherine came to the Lockwood Luncheon with Katherine's hairstyle looking exactly like Elena's. She watched as chaos began to break out on the event. She watched when Isobel brought Elena's body to a car and a few minutes later, Stefan got out with another 'Elena'.
It didn't take long for Stefan to realize who the 'Elena' really was, and when he did, she quickly injected him with vervain. And as he started to weaken, she just threw his body to the bushes besides them.
Bella chuckled and shook her head in disbelief at everything she just saw. She really couldn't believe how Katherine kept claiming that she loved Stefan when she was treating him like that. Love wasn't just a word. It was a strong feeling that must be proven by action. And her action earlier didn't prove her love for Stefan at all.
Katherine apparently returned to the foreclosed house she went to this morning. She was on the phone with Isobel as she walked into the house. And a minute later, a guy came out of nowhere and followed her inside.
Katherine once taught her that they must always be two steps ahead of their enemy if they wanted to beat them. And in order to do that, they needed to keeping tabs on them every now and then. That was why she was able to recognize the guy that just showed up as one of Klaus's witches, since she had been secretly keeping tabs on the original over the years.
At first, all she heard was Katherine's screams of pain, then followed by a thud from her body falling onto the floor. But a second later, another scream was heard, this time from a guy.
Bella quickly got out from her car and flashed herself to the front of the house. If her guess was right, the guy must have tried to give Katherine an aneurysm, and because Katherine had been around for a long time and somehow already learned how to endure the pain from it, the Petrova girl might just pretend to be in pain and fall unconscious so she could attack back when he tried to check on her. And if that was really the case, Bella couldn't just let that bitch get away from everything again, could she?
Her guess was proven right when Katherine hurriedly got out from the house with blood around her mouth. She looked incredibly surprised by her presence, but before she could react, Bella already flashed herself behind her and snapped her neck.
"Sorry, Kitty Kat." She pretended to look guilty at her unconscious body. With a mocking tone, she quoted back Katherine's own word, "I'm just looking out for myself."
A second later, the witch guy came out from the house, his right hand was holding his bleeding neck. His confused gaze was quickly shifted from her to Katherine's unconscious body.
"Tell Klaus I never meant to cross him," she gave him a message. And without waiting any response, she disappeared.
MAKING KATHERINE PAY FOR WHAT SHE DID was something Bella had always wanted since a century ago. But she kind of expected it to feel more satisfying than this. She finally won over her nemesis, but somehow she didn't feel any different.
It probably had something to do with the fact that she wasn't only help to deliver Katherine to Klaus, but also the moonstone. She knew Katherine had it at the time Klaus's witch took her, and yet she didn't do anything about it. She didn't even try to warn her brothers. She realized that was just the same as betraying them.
Ironically, she hated Katherine for her betrayal. And now she herself had just betrayed her brothers, her own flesh and blood. She felt like a hypocrite.
The three of Salvatore sibling were waiting on their porch as the real estate lawyer was working on the paperwork to transfer the deed on their house to Elena inside. Even though that was actually a good idea since it could prevent any vampire from entering their house, but Bella still had objections since it was Elena who would have the right to decide who could enter their house when she wasn't even a Salvatore.
"Did I really not get a say on this?" Bella protested to her brothers. "It's my house too."
"No, you did get a say on this," Damon replied. His lopsided smile suddenly appeared. "But you'll lose anyway if we take vote."
Groaning, she muttered sarcastically, "Just great."
Damon's face suddenly turned serious again as he asked, "You really think Bonnie can take on Klaus?"
"She said she'd channel enough witch power to kill him," Stefan answered. "Elijah thought that would work and he was an Original, so..."
"We just need to find him."
"Yeah."
Hearing Damon made it seem like it was going to be easy, she scoffed, "Good luck with that."
But they chose to ignore her.
"Could she do one of those witch tracking spells?"
"Nope. Not without something that belongs to Klaus. Believe me, I already asked."
"If you two are counting on finding him first to get the upper hand, I suggest you also prepare yourself to lose your precious doppelganger forever." She could no longer bear to hear them talk about something they didn't know but acted as if they did. "It's Klaus we're talking about," she then added as if it was the obvious.
Her words and her tone made her brothers quickly exchanged glances. "Bella, if you know something about him that we don't, you better tell us," Stefan responded. "Or else you have to start writing a eulogy for my funeral because I'm only gonna let him kill Elena over my dead body."
Damon chimed in, "Same here."
"Seriously, brothers?" She frowned and stared at them both in disbelief. "You two haven't learned your lesson from your experience with the other doppelganger?"
"Elena isn't Katherine, okay?" Stefan stated the obvious. "She's more than worthy of being saved."
She just rolled her eyes, knowing it would be a waste of time to argue with him about that. "Whatever you say, brother."
"Do you think he killed her?" Damon suddenly asked again, his eyes staring at the floor.
"Katherine?" Stefan asked back, an eyebrow raised. "Probably."
"I highly doubt that," she commented.
"Well, if he really did..." Damon paused for a bit. "It's not like she didn't have it coming."
Bella couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at her oldest brother. His mouth might have said so, but his face and tone said otherwise. It was like he actually felt sorry for Katherine.
The real estate lawyer finally came out from the house, along with Elena who walked him out. Meanwhile both of her brothers immediately tried to walk inside, Bella just stayed in her place as she already knew she now needed to be invited by Elena first.
"I'm sorry, I'm completely forgot," Elena said after she almost walked back inside the house and left them there. "Stefan and Bella." Looking at the two siblings in turn, the Gilbert girl smiled ignorantly as she excluded the oldest one in purpose. "Would you guys like to come inside my house?"
After shooting his eldest brother a victorious look, Stefan answered, "I would love to."
And as Stefan walked inside, Bella followed and muttered in annoyance, "It's not like it really is your house." Not wanting to get involved with the whatever it was between those three people, she quickly flashed herself to her room.
To be honest, she didn't know what all of this meant. She didn't know if Klaus got her message or if he accepted her apology. But now he had Katherine and the moonstone, and his witch was already here, it was only a matter of time before he came here too for the ritual... or was it possible that he was already here? And if that was the case, would she be able to risk her chances of staying here and find out if she had been forgiven?
One of her questions was answered immediately when Elena and Bonnie returned to the house and reported to them that Klaus had just made his first move at school. He might not show himself up in person, but it was enough to make them nervous.
"So we go to the dance and find him," Damon outlined the plan in a nutshell.
"Really? How are we gonna do that?" Stefan questioned, frowning. "We don't know what he looks like."
"But she do." Damon tilted his head to his sister's side. He then turned to her as he asked, "Don't you?"
"Even if I do, there's no way I'm gonna come with you to that stupid dance where Klaus could easily find me," Bella replied firmly, arms folding across her chest.
Damon snorted and tried to persuade, "Oh, come on, you're free to leave as soon as you point us which one he is."
"And what makes you so sure that he won't spot me first and kill me before I have a chance to run?"
"We won't let that happen." It was Stefan's turn to convince her. "We'll protect you, like we used to."
Being a vampire for 145 years and at the same time being in the run from two deadliest vampires made Bella used to not expecting other people to protect her. And between her and her brothers, she felt like she could take care of herself better than them. But since she alreadyㅡsecretlyㅡscrewed them up with the moonstone, she couldn't help but to feel like this was her chance to make up to them.
"Fine," Bella finally agreed. "But you owe me." She then turned to Elena and Bonnie as well. "All of you."
A knock was suddenly heard from the front door and interrupted them. A second later, the door opened from the outside and Alaric came inside.
"There you are," Damon exclaimed to his drinking buddy.
"Sorry I'm late," the history teacher apologized and walked closer to them.
"I need you to put me down as a chaperone at the dance tonight." Damon then infromed him the big news, "Klaus made his first move."
"Okay, so we find him and then what? Hmm? What's our plan of attack?" Elena questioned.
"Me, I'm the plan," Bonnie answered, somewhat trying to look as confident as possible. "He has no idea how much power I can channel. If we can find him, I can kill him."
Alaric chuckled at her. "That's not gonna be that easy. I mean, he is the biggest, baddest vampire around."
"Alaric has a point," Damon stated. "I mean, what if he...?" He suddenly rushed towards Bonnie, but without even touching him, the witch threw him across the room.
Stefan nodded at the Bennett girl. "Well, I was impressed."
"Please remind me not to get on your bad side," Bella commented, eyes looking mockingly at her oldest brother.
"It doesn't matter if he's an Original. I can take down anyone who comes at me," Bonnie exclaimed to everyone. She turned to her bestfriend and assured her, "I can kill him, Elena. I know I can."
Bella didn't know why, but even with Bonnie being that powerful, she was still skeptical with their plan. There were too many scenarios that could happen if something went wrong tonight. And they didn't even bother to make any backup plan.
With the impending vampire doom, Bella of course didn't have any time to go shopping. That was why she just chose to wear one of her old dresses from the 60's. A bow belt dress, long white gloves, and layered pearls did the trick and made her look both classy and vintage. Feeling that no one would pay attention to the details, she decided to just style her hair into loose curls as usual.
She was forced to go to the dance with Damon since both of them didn't have a date. And as soon as they entered the school grounds, they immediately found Bonnie and Jeremy who were involved in a serious conversation outside. Bella wanted to just go straight to the gym where the dance was being held, but Damon pulled her towards them instead.
Since the kidnapping incident three days ago, Bella started to distance herself from Jeremy, even more than before. Words seemed unable to make the Gilbert boy understand why he couldn't have feelings for her, so she decided to make him understand through actions. She felt like it was the least she could do for him after he saved her life. It was for his own good after all.
"Good evening," Damon greeted them.
"You two don't go to this school," Jeremy replied jokingly, eyes immediately fell on Bella.
"Great, we're not welcomed, let's go." Bella turned her body around and was about to leave, but Damon had already caught her arm and pulled her back into her previous position.
"Since when you become so sulky?" Damon playfully tried to poke his little sister's chin, but Bella had slapped his hand away first.
Elena and Stefan came and joined them. "Hey, you guys," the Gilbert girl greeted.
"You guys ready to do this?" Stefan asked, eyes looking at every faces around him.
While the others nodded firmly, Bella groaned and said, "Let's just get this over with."
"Thanks for being here, everybody," the MC opened the dance as they walked in. Everyone, except the six of them who just came, clapped their hands. "We have a special shout-out tonight," the MC announced. "This is for Elena, from Klaus." And then, the song Dedicated to the One I Love by The Mamas & The Papas started playing.
Bella wrinkled her nose and commented, "That was really creepy."
"That was a lame, cheap shot," Damon responded disparagingly. "He's just trying to bait us."
Elena quickly looked around the room and claimed, "I know everyone here."
"Maybe he's not here," Stefan replied. "He just wants us to believe that he is."
"It's a party, people, blend," Damon suggested. "Let him come to us."
Bonnie was the first one to agree with Damon. "Good idea." She then pulled Jeremy to the dance floor, and when the Gilbert boy tried to refuse, she just ignored it and kept pulling him.
After Stefan and Elena followed Bonnie and Jeremy to the dance floor, Bella accidentally caught the interested glances shown to her from several male students in the corner of the room. She thought it wouldn't hurt to grab a bite before facing the impending vampire doom, but she could leave and get to them, Damon had already held her arm.
"Where do you think you're going?" her oldest brother leaned closer to her and asked. "I already promised to protect you, and it'll be a lot of easier to do that if you stick with me."
"Ugh, great," she grumbled and pulled her arm away from his grip. "I already had to go on a suicide mission to this stupid dance, and now this?"
"Stop grumbling, it doesn't look good at women on your age," he joked.
She narrowed her eyes and glared at him. "You're not funny."
Damon didn't respond at this as his eyes accidentally caught his drinking buddy on the other side of the room. "There's Ric, come on." And when he tried to pull his little sister's arm again, Bella had put her hand away first.
"I can walk on my own," she retorted, then walked past Damon to where Ric was.
"Special dedication, huh?" the history teacher muttered to them when they arrived besides him. "This guy's a little twisted."
"I'm not impressed."
"No?"
While the two men started chatting, Bella started scanning the room, trying to find any sign of Klaus. And when she couldn't find him anywhere, worries began to wash over her. It would be a lot of harder to beat your enemy when you couldn't see them coming.
"Do you see him anywhere?" Damon asked and she shook her head as an answear. He then caught a signal that Stefan gave him from the dance floor. "I'll be right back." But before leaving, he ordered to his drinking buddy, "Keep an eye on her."
Bella chuckled and stared in disbelief at Damon who was walking towards Stefan and Elena. He apparently intended to replace Stefan in dancing with Elena and keeping an eye on her while Stefan went to warn Caroline.
So much for their promises to protect her. She probably didn't really expect their protection, but that didn't mean she wasn't annoyed to know that they really preferred Elena over her. She was their little sister after all.
Too upset with both of her brothers, Bella decided to just leave. But as soon as she stepped her foot through the deserted school corridor, she heard footsteps following her from behind. She didn't even need to turn around to find out who it was.
"Seriously, Ric," she scoffed as she stopped walking. "Just because my brother told you to keep an eye on me, doesn't mean you really have to follow me around." Finally turning to the history teacher, she emphasized, "I'm a vampire, I can take care of myself."
"I know you do," he immediately agreed.
"Good."
She was about to leave, but she stopped again as she heard him saying, "I've got your message."
"What message?" She turned back at him and frowned. "I don't even have your number."
He didn't answer right away. Instead he started smiling in a creepy way. "I see you haven't change, Isabella," he said as if they had known each other for a long time, his voice calm. "You're still keep getting yourself in the wrong situation. First with my brother, then with Katerina, and now this."
It didn't take long for Bella to realize who he really was. "Klaus," she gasped as she said his name.
Just a few minutes ago, she was looking for this guy. But now that he was in front of her, all she could do was froze in silence. She gulped as fear slowly crept through her body.
"Don't worry, love, I'm not here to hurt you." His creepy smile widened as he walked closer to her. "You helped deliver the moonstone and Katerina to me. And for that, not only I will grant you your freedom, but I will also give you a head start."
She just stared warily at him as he finally stopped right in front of her. Putting his hand in his pocket, he gave her an order, "Tell your brothers to back off, and I promise I wouldn't go after you or them."
Klaus then walked past her, and once the man was out of sight, Bella wasted no more time. She hurried back to the dance to find her brothers, but they were nowhere to be found. She tried to look for the others, but she couldn't find them either. Not Bonnie, Elena, or even Jeremy.
She cursed under her breath, where the hell are they at the time like this?
"Hey, what's going on?" Caroline asked when she accidentally bumped into her and Matt. The Forbes girl looked worried as she realized the look on her face. "Are you okay?"
Instead of answering, Bella asked back, "Do you see my brothers?" Her eyes kept searching through the crowd.
"No. What's wrong?"
She turned back to Caroline when she still couldn't find them. She couldn't exactly tell her what happened since Matt was there, but she couldn't also leave her clueless. "If you saw Alaric, just run," she warned her. "He's not really himself."
Without waiting for her response, Bella hurriedly left and continued her search. And after a while, she finally found one of her brothers in the other school corridor.
"Stefan, it's Ric!" she quickly informed him. "Klaus's in his body."
"Wait, what?"
"He possessed his body, sort of," she explained with a frown, somewhat unsure with her own answer. Looking around the corridor, she asked back, "Where's Damon?"
"He went to find Bonnie and Elena." His eyes began to look worriedly at his sister. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
"No, he's giving me a head start." She shook her head and ran her fingers through her blond hair, trying hard not to panic. "We need to get out of here, fast."
"No, you need to get out of here," he corrected.
"Butㅡ"
"Just go home, okay? Let Damon and I take care of the this."
Bella frowned and stared in disbelief at Stefan who immediately left her.
Screw this, she thought. Just because her brothers were more than willing to sacrifice their own lives for Elena's, didn't mean she should do the same thing.
And without wasting any more time, she left.
PREVIOUSLY, IF SOMEONE ASKED BELLA WHO SHE DISLIKED THE MOST between the two Petrova doppelgangers, she would have answered Katherine right away. But somehow she wasn't sure anymore.
Elena managed to keep giving Bella reasons to dislike her. Just like this morning, the Gilbert girl went behind their back and undaggered Elijah. Bella knew she had thought about doing the same thing before. But in the end she didn't do it because she understood the risks. She wasn't sure Elena understood the risks as well since the girl was just as idiot as her brothers, if not more. And above all, she disliked her because the girl was the reason why her brothers were at each other's throats for almost all day.
"You don't have to be so mad at your brother," Andie said as she handed Damon a glass of bourbon. "You know, he's worried about Elena, and..."
"Just go, please," Damon cut in a begging tone.
"I know you're worried about her too."
"Andie," he suddenly snapped, eyes glaring at the woman. "Go."
"Okay."
Bella just watched everything silently as she poured herself a drink. There was no use talking to Damon at this point. He wouldn't listen to anyone but his own ego.
While Andie left, Stefan entered the room. "Tired of your little play thing already?" he quipped.
"Don't start with me, Stefan," Damon replied without even looking at him. "She's just my distraction."
"She's a person," the younger guy pointed out. "You're victimizing her."
Hearing that, Bella couldn't help but chim in, "You know I've tried to hold my judgement for a while now... but I have to agree with Stefan."
As a vampire, she could easily tolerate Damon's behavior. They were a toxic species after all. They enjoyed all the hunt, the feed, the turtore, and even the kill. But as a woman, she couldn't help but feel bothered with that. No woman deserves to be treated the way Damon treated Andie.
"Need I remind you two that I'm the older one here and not the other way around?" Damon retorted in a lazy voice. "And you should be thankful she's here, Stefan. She keeps me from going for what I really want."
"You're right," Stefan agreed and walked closer to Damon. "Thank you for being in love with my girlfriend."
Damon put the glass in his hand on the table and got up from the couch. "And there it is," he exclaimed in a mocking tone.
"There it is," Stefan repeated his words as they were now standing in front of each other.
Bella put her glass back to the table and quickly flashed herself beside them as she could sense another fight coming. "Really, guys? This is the third time today." She looked at them in turn. "Are you two seriously gonna keep fighting over some stupid girl?"
Both of them gave her a warning look for the way she referred to Elena, but Bella just ignored it.
"We're family," she reminded them. "We better than this."
Stefan lowered his head for a moment and he looked like he was about to back off when he looked back up at Damon. "You know, you can be in love with Elena all you want... if it means that you'll protect her. But I have the one thing that you never will."
"Oh, yeah?" Damon replied defiantly. "What's that?"
"Her respect."
And before Bella could react, Damon already punched Stefan so hard that he fell on a rack and broke it. Stefan quickly got up and tried to rush over Damon, but Bella already put herself between them and tried to hold them back. It wasn't easy though, since both of them continued on trying to attack each other.
"Stop!"
Hearing Elena's voice, they quickly stopped. The three of them soon found out that she didn't come alone. Elijah was with her.
"Now you've invited him in?" Damon asked in disbelief.
The doppelganger announced, "Elijah and I have renewed the terms of our deal."
"Really?"
"All of you will come to no harm at my hands," Elijah informed as he walked closer to them. "I only ask for one thing in return."
"What?"
"An apology."
"A what?"
Meanwhile Damon and Stefan were busy exchange glances at each other, Bella walked towards the original and exclaimed, "I swear I have nothing to do with your death."
"I know you don't," Elijah replied and gave her an understanding look. "I was talking about your brothers."
It was Stefan's turn to walk closer to him. "I'm sorry for the part that I played in your death," he apologized. His eyes were fixed on Elena as he continued, "I was protecting Elena. I will always protect Elena."
"I understand," the original answered.
All of them turned to Damon who was just shook his head in disbelief.
"Sacrifice is going to happen, Damon," Elena told him. "Bonnie will be able to kill Klaus without hurting herself and Elijah knows how to save my life." She somehow sounded proud at herself as she added, "I told you I'd find another way, and I did."
Even though the Gilbert girl tried to sound smart, Bella somehow still saw her as an idiot.
Damon turned to Elijah and asked, "Is that true?"
"It is," the original confirmed.
"And you're trusting him?" the oldest Salvatore asked again, this time directed at Elena.
"I am."
"You can all go to hell."
Bella wasn't even surprise to see her oldest brother react like that. And after his leaving, Stefan turned to their new ally and explained, "He's angry with me right now. But he'll come around."
"Don't give him or yourself a false hope, Stefan," Bella scoffed and went to get her glass back. "We both know he won't."
