Boston, 1903.
ON THAT DARK AND LONELY STREET, a beautiful blonde girl was walking all alone. Her hands swung gracefully down each side of her body. She pressed her lips together while her hazel eyes looked around with cautious. As she walked past a dark alley, several men in there saw her and started following her. This made her hurriedly speed up her pace.
After a while of running and trying to get away from the men, she finally stopped as she had nowhere else to go. The men have cornered her in another dark alley. She swallowed hard as she looked at the four of them who were sharing the same smirk.
"Please... don't hurt me!" she begged, eyes staring pleadingly.
"Don't worry, little girl," one of the men replied, his smirk growing. "We just want to have some fun."
"Good," the girl responded, her tone changed drastically. No more fear in her eyes. Her face was emotionless. "Because I'm bored."
Slowly, the sclera of her eyes turned blood-red, dark veins appeared under her eyes, and her canine teeth extend into razor-sharp fangs. Before any of the men could react at that, she threw one of them to the wall, leaving him unconscious. She then quickly flashed herself behind the other one of them, pushed him until he fell into ground, and stomped his legs until it broke. Another one of them was being stupid enough to try to attack her so she grabbed him by the neck and shoved his head to the nearest wall, leaving him unconscious with blood dripping from his forehead. The last one was trying to run away, but she quickly appeared in front of him and ordered, "You will not move or make a sound."
Seeing that none of them could escape or scream for help, she decided it was the right time to enjoy her meal. She started off with the broken leg one since he looked like the most helpless of them. Her palm was covering his mouth as she dug her fangs through his neck. She always loved to hear the scream, but she also knew better than to draw attention.
Another beautiful young woman suddenly appeared in front of the alley. She had an oval face with fine bone structure, a wealth of brown curly hair, and almond-shaped, deep brown eyes with thick dark lashes. A smirk grew in her face as she said to the blonde, "I see you've been busy." With graceful steps, she approached her. "Do you mind if I join in?"
By the time the blonde stopped her current activity and looked up to the brunette, the man on her hand was already dead. She threw off his body aside, then flashed herself to the first one she attacked. Picking up his body, she threw it to the brunette as the answer of her question. The brunette easily caught him, and for a moment they shared a similar smirk, before she followed the blonde by pulling out her fangs and digging it into the man's neck.
It didn't take long for the brunette to suck the blood and the life out of the man in her hand, or for the blonde to do the same thing to the stupid man who had tried to attack her before.
When the blonde started cleaning up the remain blood around her mouth, the brunette turned to the last man standing. "You forgot this one," she reminded her, her eyes staring at him like a predator staring at its prey.
"No, I left him on purpose," the blonde answered. Then in a split-second, she appeared in front of him. "You will clean all the bodies and will not tell anyone about this." She looked at him right in the eyes, her pupil dilated as she gave him the order. "And if you ever think of harassing someone again... I want you to cut your own dick until there's nothing left."
"Smart and brutal," the brunette remarked, the smirk yet to leave her face. "I'm impressed, you really are getting good at this." She then offered her arm to the the blonde, and as the blonde linked their arms together, they started walking away from the alley. "But I'm curious, why do you always chose this kind of person?"
"They're predators, Katherine," the blonde answered as if it was obvious. "I find it more satisfying to hunt the other predators rather than the prey."
This made Katherine let out a small chuckle. "Oh, you Salvatores really have such impeccable taste."
"I'm not so sure about my brothers," the Salvatore girl replied quietly, but Katherine still could hear it and the insult beneath.
"Now what?" Katherine challenged. "You're still angry with me for turning them?"
"Of course not." She forced a chuckle and tried to sound nonchalant as she muttered, "It was almost 40 years ago after all."
But Katherine could easily smell the lie. "Trust me, Bella, they wanted it," she assured her. "Even Stefan."
They stopped walking as they finally arrived at their carriage. An old man opened the door for them and offered his hand to help them in.
"And you should be thanking me," Katherine continued when they were sitting opposite each other and the carriage started to drive away. "If I didn't turn them, they were most likely dead by now and you wouldn't have a chance to see them again."
Bella decided to not respond and just looked away to the carriage window. No matter how hard Katherine tried to make it sound like she wasn't the one to blame for everything that went wrong in Bella's life, she still wouldn't agree with that. Katherine might be right about they were most likely dead by now if she never came to their life, but at least their deaths would be natural and they would be living normally before then.
"Speaking of..." Katherine spoke again, "I don't recall you ever mention how you were turned?"
Bella tried hard not to show any change of expression as she kept staring out the carriage window. "It's just a boring story."
"And yet I'm still curious."
If there was one thing she had learned from her human life, it was that she should never trust Katherine Pierce. There was no way Bella would share that painful experience with anyone, let alone with a cold-hearted bitch like her. For all she knew Katherine would find a way to use that information to her advantage. But she could hear a demanding tone in Katherine's voice when she said so. She knew if she refused to tell her, Katherine would find out by herself. That was why she had no other choice but to lie.
She turned back to her as she started, "I've met some vampires when I lived in New Orleans." Trying to keep it as short as possible, she quickly ended, "When I found out about Damon and Stefan... I asked one of them to turn me."
"Who?" Katherine demanded again, eyes narrowed at her. "I also knew some vampires in New Orleans."
Bella turned to stare at her hands on her lap as she was forced to lie again, "Someone named Marcel Gerard." Before Katherine could ask another question, she looked up to her and quickly tried to change the subject, "Where are we going again?"
"To meet an acquaintance of mine," Katherine answered simply, finally dropping the previous subject. "Do you remember Astrid? She sent me a letter saying that she finally got some informations about how to kill an original."
Katherine somehow always had a way with witches. And she had took Bella to meet her witch acquaintance a few times, with the excuse of wanting to show Bella how to deal with them, but little did Bella knew that Katherine was taking her because she needed a backup in case things went wrong. Just like right now.
"Not just dagger death," Katherine added again, "but permanent death."
For a moment, Bella just blinked at her since she wasn't sure how to react to the information. So far, she knew that the originals couldn't be killed by anything. The only thing that could kill them was the white oak dagger, but it would only result in temporary death. Once the dagger was removed, they would come back to life again. And now that someone said there was a way to permanently kill them, why did she suddenly feel worried?
"So you want to try to kill Klaus?" Bella asked as she finally found her voice again.
"If he die, I wouldn't have to run anymore."
"Wouldn't that be very risky? I thought you liked playing it safe."
Bella didn't know why she even bothered trying to talk Katherine out of it. All she knew was she didn't want anyone to know how to permanently kill an original, if there was one.
"I do like playing it safe," Katherine admitted. "But without risk, there will be no change." Her infamous smirk grew back. "Besides, I already have a backup plan in case things go wrong."
And just as Katherine said that, their carriage came to a sudden halt. They started exchanging glances when the next thing they heard was a groan of pain.
Katherine was the first to get off the Carriage and check what was going on outside, Bella following after. And together they found out that their driver was dying with a stake in his stomach.
Before they could do anything about that, another stake flew towards Katherine, but she caught it just in time. Another one flew again, this time directed at Bella, but she also caught it with her hand. They started looking around the dark woods where they were at, trying to find out who did this to them, but they couldn't find anyone. Soon, another stakes kept coming at them from any direction.
"Bella, run!" Katherine shouted as one of the stake finally hit her stomatch. "Get help!"
Without wasting any more time, Bella flashed herself towards where they were heading. It only took her a few minutes to reach Astrid's house since they weren't too far from there. She knocked the door impatiently. But until a little later, no one answered.
She was about to just come in since she had been invited in before, but as soon as she touched the doorknob, she began to suffocate, then fell to the ground and passed out.
GROANING, BELLA BLINKED HER EYES AND RAN HER HAND TO HER DIZZY HEAD as her consciousness slowly returned. She was lying on the floor at that moment. For a while, she chose to close her eyes back and tried to remember what had happened to her before. It didn't take long for the memory to start coming back to her.
"She's finally awake."
Her eyes immediately reopened and she hurriedly got up when she heard that voice. Only then did she finally realize that she was in the living room of Astrid's house with the two people she least wanted to meet.
"Oh, I really like it when someone has a good sense to be afraid," the woman of the two spoke again as Bella started to inch back from them. She was a beautiful and very attractive woman with a blonde hair like Bella's, only hers was lighter. Her arms folded across her chest as her light blue eyes stared at Bella condescendingly and her full lips curled into a lopsided smile.
"Such a pleasant surprise," the other one said. He was an attractive man with curled dirty-blond hair. His dark blue eyes stared at Bella with a gaze that was difficult to interpret. "Who would have thought that we would meet again like this?" He gave her a faint smile that immediately faded away as he spoke again, "Now answer me something, Isabella, where is Katerina?"
Swallowing hard, she began to stutter, "I-I-I don't know."
In the blink of eyes, he appeared in front of Bella. "What are you doing with her in the first place?" he asked again, eyes shooting a death glare to her. "Don't even think to lie to me. You are on the run from my brother, and she is on the run from me. I don't believe it is only a coincidence that you two have an alliance."
"I don't have any alliance with her," she hurriedly denied. "I just knew her from back then when she stayed in my house at Mystic Falls in 1864." Bella didn't know where she got the courage to explain all of that without stammering. "She said she could help me with my vampirism... a-and that's why I chose to come with her." So far, her last statement was the only lie she told. She then tried to reassured him, "But I swear I really don't know where she is right now."
If her guess was right, Katherine must have known that Astrid's letter was just a trap. Thinking about it now, she finally realized how out-of-character Katherine was when she told her to run when they were attacked earlier. Katherine was the most selfish person she had ever met. Instead of telling Bella to run away and get help, she would have chosen to run away and save herself if the attack was real and not just an attemp to make Bella walk into a trap.
"Did you know that she's on the run from me?" he questioned again.
Looking down, Bella shook her head and queitly answered, "No."
The man suddenly grabbed her chin roughly and forced her to look into his eyes. And as his pupil dilated, she unconsciously confessed, "Yes."
"I thought I specifically told you not to lie," he snarled, his grip moved to her throat, causing her to start choking.
Bella tried to remove his hand from her neck, but he was too strong. Her vampire strength wasn't even enough to help her in that situation.
"So you knew I've been looking for her all this time and yet you never tried to hand her over to me when you had the chance," he concluded after he finally let go of Bella's neck. Turning to the other woman who had been watching everything silently, he smiled mischievously and offered, "Rebekah, how would you like to pay our brother Kol a visit and bring him his most prized possession?"
Bella's eyes immediately widened.
"Considering he has been looking for her like a crazy..." Rebekah paused for a bit, her eyes fixed on Bella as if she was trying to consider the idea. Her smirk appeared as she continued, "It would be my pleasure to deliver her to him."
"No, please!"
Before Bella could even try to run, the man grabbed her arm and threw her to Rebekah as if she were a rag doll. Rebekah easily caught her, and then started dragging her outside. There was already another carriage waiting for them. Rebekah shoved her inside, completely ignoring her pleading. And after telling the driver where they were going, she followed inside and sat in front of Bella.
"Last I heard he was in Kentucky," Rebekah informed her, still smirking. "So prepare yourself, it is going to be a long ride."
Sighing, Bella started to look around and think for a way out. It had been almost 38 years since the last time she saw him, and she still didn't think she was ready to see him again. In fact she didn't know if she would ever be ready to see him again. And she couldn't imagine how he would react when he saw her. There were too many scenarios of what he might do to her if that happened. And right now she wasn't ready to find out which one would be true.
"Rebekah, I'm begging you," Bella tried again, eyes looking pleadingly at the woman in front of her. "I will do anything to help catch Katherine, but please... don't take me to him."
"You really don't want to meet him, do you?" Rebekah observed, her eyes narrowed at Bella curiously. She then chuckled and shook her head. "And here I thought you two were supposed to be the next Romeo and Juliet."
Bella looked down to her hands in her lap at the mention of the phenomenal tragic love story. Her love story with him were completely different from Romeo and Juliet, but she felt like it was as tragic as theirs.
"I mean, you were even willing to die and become a vampire for him."
Bella quickly looked back at Rebekah after hearing that. And just by seeing Bella's gaze at that moment, Rebekah finally realized something.
All the mocking manner suddenly left Rebekah's face. "Unless... you actually didn't."
Bella gulped and finally admitted, "No offense, but I've never want to be a vampire." Her voice began to crack. "He did this to me. He took away my choices."
It was Rebekah's turn to fall silent. She never really knew what was going on between her brother and this girl in front of her. One day Kol excalimed that he wanted to go traveling alone, which soon she found out that he was actually with Bella. Then a year later, he came back like a crazy and asked for her help to find Bella without telling her what was really going on between them. And now everything seemed to make sense to her.
"I loved him, I think I still do," Bella continued admitting. The look on Rebekah's face made her feel like she could trust her, at least with this. "But I don't think I can ever forgive what he did to me. I don't think I can look at him without remembering how painful it was when he did that."
For a moment, there was only silence between them. But the sympathy continued to appear on Rebekah's face as she recalled how it felt when she was turned back then.
"You know... I've been in love with a mortal more than once," Rebekah finally spoke again, breaking the silence. Her eyes was wandering around outside the carriage window. "And Kol was always the one who taunted me about it. He said settling for mortal is a sign of weakness." There was a barely noticeable smile in her face as she looked back at Bella and continued, "He probably didn't expect to have the tables turned as you came into his life."
Rebekah leaned back in her chair and resumed, "Between all my brothers, he was the least likely to fall in love. I mean I've seen Finn, Elijah, and even Nik being in love with someone. But Kol? Never. Not even once. The only thing he loved was killing." She then casually confessed, "And that's why I tried to provoke him to kill you, twice. The first one was when you two went to watch some play together, and then at my family's ball."
Bella frowned and stared at Rebekah in disbelief, her mouth fell open.
"It's nothing personal, I just wanted to know whether his feelings for you were real or not." Rebekah let out a small chuckle when her eyes caught Bella's reaction. Her face then turned serious again as she continued, "And believe me when I say this, it is real. The Kol I used to know would never hesistate to kill anyone, especially if the chance to do that was right before his eyes. He's the wildest of us. He never cared about anyone. But somehow you managed to make him care about you, in great amounts. He might have tried to deny it at first, but it became too much that he couldn't even hold it anymore. And now that you've left him... he's more broken than ever."
Little did Bella realize that he wasn't the only one who broke her heart, she broke his heart too. She wasn't sure who was the most miserable of them. And she didn't know if they would ever be as happy as they used to be.
"But despite the fact that he's my brother and I know how much he really love you, I will not justify his action," Rebekah went on, her tone changed. "I understand how it feels like to be turned against your will. It's something we would have to carry on for an eternity... and yet we didn't have a choice in it. It's really unfair and I won't force you to forgive him."
Bella suddenly knew that she was right to trust Rebekah about this as she saw the Mikaelson girl suddenly gave a signal for the driver to stop. And after open the carriage door, Rebekah ordered to her, "Go!"
"Thank you," Bella whispered, her lips curled into a sincere smile. Without wasting any more time, she jumped out from the carriage.
"Wait," Rebekah called again when she was about to leave. Bella decided to stay for a while and listen to what she was about to say. "If someday you ever want to give it a try and forgive him... I suggest you consider the fact that he's never been in love before. I think he just didn't know how to love someone properly."
Bella just nodded her head and simply replied, "I'll keep that in mind." And after that, she started running.
IN THAT BUSY TRAIN HALLWAY, A dark-haired guy tried to get his way to a compartment. And when he finally found the one he was looking for, he quickly got in. There was only one other person inside, a young woman with curly brown hair who was busy looking outside the train window.
"I don't understand why you still have to send her to the trap," he exclaimed as he took place besides her. "I mean, you told me to do the spell to check if it was a trap or not so that we could avoid it. And I did the spell, and you knew it was a trap before you set foot in that place, but you still tricked her to walk into it?"
"Her involvement with this would throw Klaus off guard, and that's the kind of distraction I need to escape freely," she responded without taking her eyes off the window. "Besides, we both on the run from two different original family member. If one of us get caught, the other bound to get caught either. It's getting really dangerous if we stick together."
"So you chose to sacrifice her," he concluded, his tone judgmental.
"Better her than I," the woman replied casually as she finally turned around. "Besides, unlike me, she wouldn't be as good as dead if she get caught."
The guy frowned. "What do you mean?"
"You'll see," she remarked, smirking. But as soon as she turned back to the window, her smirk slowly faded. And there was guilt in her brown eyes.
A/n : I decided to do another flashback chapter, but this time when Katherine betrayed her. I'm trying to make the other character as canon as possible. I mean Katherine will always looking out for herself. And Rebekah never wanted to be a vampire so I feel like she should be able to relate to what Bella's going through. And yes, Rebekah did try to provoke Kol to kill Bella. If you look closely at chapter four when Bella told Kol to pick her up at 7, he showed his devilish smirk which meant he had a bad intention to her. And in the Mikaelson ball, it was Rebekah who told her to go the room where Kol was on his killing-spree mode.
By the way, let me know which friendship do you like the most! With Caroline, Katherine, or Rebekah? I'll try my best to show more of them in the future!
