Chapter 7

Blue Tagg: Yep

An Undercover Changeling: You got that right, and glad to hear that

On the drive home, Mirabel felt very good.

"That was a nice dinner, Marcos. I really enjoyed myself."

"I'm glad to hear that."

"Yeah, much better than dinner with my family."

Marcos then looked a little curious.

"What exactly goes on in your family anyway?"

Mirabel took a deep breath, and began talking about her family. She explained how members of her family were extraordinary and had amazing jobs and hobbies. And how she felt like she was "in the way", or that her family didn't really like her, especially her abuela and oldest sister.

"But what about your sketches? Or your fashion club?"

"I don't share that stuff with them. Mi Abuela says my drawings are a waste of time."

Marcos' face softened.

"I'm sorry, Mirabel."

"It's okay, but I want to thank you."

"For what?"

"For being nice and kind to me."

Marcos smiled at her. When they got to Mirabel's house, the two kissed, and Mirabel quietly slipped in. When she got to her room, she squealed into her pillow.

"I can't wait to tell Angela and Valetina about this."

After changing out of her clothes and into her pajamas, she went to sleep.

Meanwhile, Marcos had just gotten back home. As soon as he got inside, he went to find his brothers. He found them in the lounge, hanging out.

"Hermanos." he said.

"Marcos, you're back." said Lorenzo.

"I have to say you picked a good one." added Esteban.

"Si. Listen I was thinking...maybe we shouldn't do this."

"Que?"

"It's just that, Mirabel's really nice, and she probably wouldn't make a good one anyway."

"Are you loco? She's perfect. It's what we've always done." Lorenzo told him.

"Oh boy." Marcos whispered.

"When Lorenzo and I were in high school, we met some very lovely ladies. We met them, charmed them, and once we had them wrapped around our fingers, we had our fun." Esteban said.

"I know."

"And now it's your turn."

"But...I don't want to hurt her."

The two looked at him. Marcos then got a little nervous.

"It's just that...she's really nice and..."

"Don't tell me you're getting soft." barked Lorenzo.

"But..."

"Really hermano, after all we've done for you." said Esteban.

"When our parents passed away, that social worker wanted to send you away we fought to keep you here with us." Lorenzo added.

"I know."

"We don't ask for much, Marcos. All we ask is that you continue our family tradition."

Marcos looked guilty, as he went back to his room.

The next morning, Mirabel woke up in a good mood. She couldn't wait to see or call Marcos. After getting cleaned up and dressed, she went downstairs. But to her surprise, she saw her parents and Abuela waiting for her in the kitchen.

This confused Mirabel.

"Que pasa?" she asked.

"Mirabel, mija we need to talk to you." said Julieta.

Mirabel looked a little concerned.

"Mirabel, you're not in trouble, it's just that..." Augustin tried to say, but Abuela spoke up.

"You have to stop seeing that boy." she snapped.

"What?" Mirabel asked in disbelief.

"He's obviously not a good match. And such a show off with that fancy car."

"Abuela that doesn't mean anything."

"Mama..." Julieta piped up.

"Stop being stubborn. You're ruining the family with this behavior."

This made Mirabel angry.

"How am I ruining this family? By liking fashion, by being with a guy who likes me and makes me happy?"

"Don't take that tone of voice with me mija!"

"Alma stop..." Augustin tried to reason.

"Marcos is the best thing that's ever happened to me, Abuela. You can't make me stop seeing him."

Abuela Alma turned red with anger.

"You don't talk back to your abuela, Mirabel!"

"Well I am! And I'm done!"

Then she turned around, and ran back to her room.

"(Sighs), stubborn girl." Alma sighed.

"Mama, what was that?" Julieta asked in disbelief.

"She had to be told."

"We agreed we were just going to talk to her about this new relationship, not shout at her." Augustin protested.

"Mama I was starting to think that I was being to harsh for thinking this way, but I can see I was right. You're way too hard on Mirabel."

Alma was shocked hearing this from her daughter.

Once she was in her room, Mirabel slammed and locked her door. She flopped face down on her bed, and began to cry.

"(Sobs), why does she have to be so cruel?"

She was so busy crying that she ignored her ringing phone, and didn't answer when someone knocked. She cried for a good hour, until the tears stopped coming out. By the time she looked at her phone, she had several missed calls from Angela, and Valentina.

First she decided to call her friends, and told them everyone.

"Your abuela told you that?" asked Angela.

"Si."

"I can't believe it? Are you okay?" wondered Valentina.

"Not really. I just can't believe my family would stoop this low."

"What are you gonna do?"

"I don't know. But I don't think I can stay in my house."

"Why don't we all meet at the mall? Angela suggested.

"Great idea."

"I guess that'd be nice." Mirabel replied.

After hanging up, Mirabel gathered her purse, and left the house without even acknowledging her parents.

After a little shopping, and some junk food Mirabel felt a little better.

"Feeling better, Mira?" asked Valentina.

"A little."

"I say don't listen to her, Mirabel. You just do you." Angela encouraged.

"Maybe." Mirabel replied.

When it came time to go, Angela and Valentina had to get back home. However, Mirabel wasn't quite ready to go back and face her family.

"You could come stay with me." offered Valentina.

"Or with me." Angela added.

"Gracias girls. But..."

Suddenly, a luxury car rolled up to them. The window rolled down to reveal Lorenzo.

"Hola Mirabel." he greeted.

"Lorenzo hi." Mirabel said.

She then introduced Angela and Valentina.

"What are you senoritas doing here?"

The girls explained about Mirabel's situation.

"I'm sorry to hear about that, Mirabel. You know why don't you come with me. Marcos is home and I'm sure he'd be happy to see you."

"Okay, that sounds nice."

Mirabel waved her friends off, and got into the car with Lorenzo.
