He Was There
A passer by would have said the weather was great, and it was a perfect day to be outside. Yet the cemetery was cold and dark, unlike the warm, bright sunny day that it was. The sun was shining down on her long blond hair; any other day she would be out with her friends soaking up the sun.
Today was not any other day.
Today was the second worst day of her life, after the day she found out it happened. Her brother and father were not talking to each other and too consumed by their own grief to even think about her.
Only thirteen and her life had changed forever. As a thirteen year old she would have to bury her own mother. The future relationship that only a mother and daughter could share was gone. No words or tears on her first date, her prom, graduation, college searching, dating and everything else one was supposed to share with their mother was gone - never to be known.
Her friends only offered "I'm sorry" and other phrases that meant nothing to a girl who had just lost her mother. Standing at the grave, she felt a strange stare at her back and didn't dare look. It felt odd yet comforting to the young girl.
The day was beautiful and the young man about to leave for college again felt cold.
Looking around he saw her, long blond hair in the graveyard with her family. He just stared at her, trying to comfort a girl he had never seen and would most likely never see again.
Yet he stared at her as if he could not turn away. His eyes followed her to her car when she got in.
He finally turned away and walked on. Unaware that she would walk into his life just out of retirement and change it forever.
Just because he was there.
