"While the Rangers try to figure out how to prove themselves to General Mardi, Vrak takes advantage of one of the Land Beyond's figure heads being in the Land Between."

Power Rangers: Megaforce REDO – dubbed Starforce

Season 1, Episode 16: Sacrifices

Four-Leaf Clover Mall, Harwood Country, Oregon

October 23, 2015

It was official. Noah, Jake, and Emma had joined Troy and Gia in the martial arts club with Sensei Kenji. It would take a while, but it would help them all get stronger, so that next time, those Toxic Mutants would not get the better of them.

Now it was after the class, and Troy was in the park, helping Noah and Emma perfect the move Kenji was teaching today. Meanwhile, Gia found Jake at Ernie's, absentmindedly slurping on a vanilla froyo.

"You did good today, Holling," Gia announced herself. "You picked up that sweeping kick immediately."

Jake didn't jump at the sound of her voice. In fact, it seemed as if he was expecting her. "Thanks, Moran. It's probably because I'm an athlete like you and Troy. And don't worry. I'll help Noah and Emma if they ever ask for my help."

"That's not what I'm worried about," Gia replied, as she sat down next to him. "I'm worried about you."

Jake finally looked at her. "I'm fine."

"No, you're not," Gia disagreed. "You're still upset by what that General Mardi said to us yesterday."

Jake's silence that followed spoke volumes.

"You guys didn't do anything. You Rangers don't deserve to be Rangers. Not when even one Toxic Mutant is too much for you to handle. Defeat one on your own, without my help, and then we can talk."

Jake was quiet, "And if I am?"

So was Gia, "You're allowed to be. In fact, I feel the same way." He turned to her, mildly surprised. He half-expected her to agree with Troy's plan to take the high road. Before he could speak, Gia continued, "If anybody else said that, then it would be no big deal. But because this Mardi guy is a General, one of the seven who lent us their power, it's no wonder we're all so upset. Because it's him, it adds a whole new layer of questions that may never be answered. Because of him, I'm now worried that us becoming Rangers was either never the plan, or they were out of options. And the latter question brings up yet another, because if that's true, then is the Land Between, and everyone living in it, far from their concerns?"

"And if that's the case?" Jake asked, almost dreading the answer.

"Then they've made an enemy of me," was all Gia said.

Unknown Forest, Land Between

Vrak had told Bigs and Bluefur all about his plan to bring Starforce Knight to his knees, and in return, they had told Vrak the perfect Toxic Mutant for said plan and where to find him.

Vrak walked through the forest until he came upon a lake. He walked to the edge of the water and called out, "Psychotick, come forth!"

The water bubbled until a tick-like monster broke the surface. "Who summoned me?"

"I am Vrak," the said villain introduced himself. "I am an ally to the Toxic Mutant faction of the Land Below. I have a job for you, if you are interested."

"A job, you say?" Psychotick asked.

"Yes, a special mission that requires your particular skills," Vrak explained.

Psychotick suddenly leapt out of the water and landed in front of Vrak, "A snack and snare job, eh? I'm in. What do you need me to do?"

"According to Bigs and Bluefur," Vrak continued, "you are the master of draining energy. Correct?"

"Of course!" Psychotick exclaimed. "Always ready and eager to feed!"

"Excellent," Vrak was pleased. "You may capture the Rangers if you wish, but your primary target is Starforce Knight. Capture him and use your draining abilities on him. If you succeed, then I can use that metal body myself against the Rangers."

"What's so special about this robot?" Psychotick asked, tilting his head in confusion.

"Starforce Knight's real name is General Mardi," Vrak said, and immediately Psychotick understood everything. "And he's not a robot. He is using an artificial body that beings of the Land Beyond need to use if they wish to interact with humans. However, it has a weakness that only you can exploit."

Paradox Amusement Park, Harwood County, Oregon

Psychotick quietly arrived at the local amusement park ten minutes later, staying hidden as he watched the people. He noted the people's squeals of joy and he was ready to turn them into shrieks of fear. He then left his hiding place and was happy when the people there began to scream and run away at the sight of him.

Sure enough, two minutes later, the five Rangers arrived, already morphed and ready to fight.

The Rangers faced down this new monster, who was clear a Toxic Mutant, judging by the emblem on his chest being the same as the monsters from yesterday.

"Figures that as soon as I get amped up," Psychotick said, "you Rangers show up to stop me. But I've got news for you! After draining all that energy, I got power to burn! And what better way to do that than to obliterate you Rangers!"

The five Rangers pulled out their Star Blasters and fired at him, but he blocked all of the blasts and sent them back to their senders. The Rangers got knocked to the ground by said hits.

Psychotick laughed, "Now that's what I call amusement!" before charging towards them.

The Rangers quickly got to their feet and met the monster halfway. Jake and Gia hit him first, then Troy, then Noah and Emma. Then he grabbed Noah by his belt and kicked his leg, letting him throw the Blue Ranger halfway across the battlefield, before holding up his hand and letting a tick fly towards him, calling out, "Tick Attack!"

In a flash of sickly green, Noah was gone.

"What did you do to him?" Troy demanded, as he charged towards the monster, who had raised both of his hands and had sent two ticks towards a couple that had unfortunately lingered behind. Troy broke off his attack, and Emma joined him in an attempt to move the couple out of the way, only for the two ticks to hit the Sky Rangers instead.

Jake then charged in with his Snake Axe, only for the monster to block the attack and strike him down. Jake quickly regained his footing and attacked again, this time joined by Gia and her Tiger Claw.

But after a brief struggle, Psychotick easily picked the two up and tossed them aside.

Jake landed on his shoulder wrong, while Gia was nursing her torso. Psychotick walked towards them, "Once hit with one of my ticks, they teleport you to any place of my choosing. Don't worry, Black and Yellow Rangers. You will join your friends soon enough."

He raised his hands again, ready for another Tick Attack, only to be stopped by a Lion Headder flying past and blocking the hit.

"Starforce Knight: Morph!"

"Time for the main event," Psychotick commented.

Starforce Knight landed a fair distance away, as Gia and Jake helped each other up.

"Good timing!" Gia said, knowing that there was a good chance that Mardi would not help them. But it was good to try. "He's tough, but I know we can take him together!"

Mardi's voice was cold, just like yesterday, "I told you already. As long as one Toxic Mutant is too much for you Rangers to handle, I will not help you."

Jake scoffed at Mardi as Psychotick said, "Yes, stay out of this, Rangers! I've been itching to fight this guy!"

The monster then charged towards Mardi, and just like yesterday, Mardi's hits were more powerful than the monster he was fighting, eventually landing a kick that sent Psychotick to the ground. The monster quickly got back up, however, and launched another Tick Attack, this time against Mardi. Mardi leapt out of the way, to Gia and Jake's horror.

Because behind Mardi was a family that was hiding behind the playground's monkey bars.

Still holding their Axe and Claw, Jake and Gia quickly took out their Star Blasters and destroyed all of the ticks before anyone in that family got hit. The two then raced over to the family, and Gia stood guard as Jake ushered the family away to a safer place.

"What the hell, Starforce Knight?!" Gia cried out, her anger from earlier returning at full force. "You put those people at risk!"

"The monster is my target," was the answer that neither Gia nor Jake wanted to hear.

They understood that the monster needed to be destroyed, but the way Mardi said that did not help his case at all.

"Fine!" Jake yelled back. "But don't leave innocent people wide open like that!"

As Mardi and Psychotick continued fighting each other, Jake and Gia swiftly surveyed the scene and saw a couple hiding behind a bench very near the fight. As Gia looked around the area for any other civilians nearby, Jake quickly ran to the couple behind the bench.

Mardi knocked the monster to the ground once more. And just like before, Psychotick got back up and launched another Tick Attack, which Mardi leapt out of the way to avoid, once again, leaving the couple behind him vulnerable.

Fortunately, Jake reached them just in time and destroyed the ticks with his Axe. As Gia ushered the couple to safety, Jake yelled out to Mardi, "Why the hell aren't you protecting those people?! That's your job, isn't it?!"

Mardi summoned his Knight Blade and struck at Psychotick several times. Once the monster was back on the ground, Mardi formed his Knight Blaster, before pulling out his Vulcan Headder card. He placed the Power Card inside his morpher, but before he could press any buttons, he was hit out of nowhere.

Through the smoke, Psychotick fired another tick at Mardi. This time, it hit him dead on. Jake and Gia could only watch as Starforce Knight vanished in a similar fashion that Noah, Troy, and Emma did.

The two then watched as Vrak (in new Chupacabra-themed armor, very similar to the Toxic Mutants) came out of his hiding place and stood next to Psychotick, "Mission accomplished. Well done, Psychotick."

"Thank you."

Jake and Gia could only watch as the two monsters then vanished.

"So, this attack was just a trick to capture General Mardi?" Jake asked.

"Apparently," Gia replied. "We can bet that whatever they plan to do to him has to be bad. C'mon, let's head to the base. Tensou can track him down."

As Gia and Jake bandaged each other's (rather mild) injuries, Tensou quickly got to work and got the data he needed in ten seconds, "I found them."

"That was fast," Jake commented.

"I just tracked General Mardi and the other three Rangers down using their Power signatures," Tensou explained, as if it were that simple.

Gosei cut in, "I apologize on General Mardi's behalf. His behavior during that fight was indeed concerning." He had a fleeting suspicion that it was because Mardi was testing the Rangers, but he kept that to himself.

"We can worry about that latter," Tensou cut in. "Yes, it's disturbing that a General would do such a thing to innocent people, but General Mardi has been captured by the enemy!"

"Tensou is correct," Gosei agreed, before explaining. "As you know, General Mardi is using an artificially-made shell that we beings of the Land Beyond must use in order to interact with humans. That is the only way Tensou and I can talk to you now. However, these shells are not all powerful. They have a weakness: sometimes the shell is stronger than the spirit using it."

"So they're planning on testing General Mardi's spirit," Jake surmised. "We can assume that if he fails that test, it's bad, right?"

"It is," Gosei confirmed. "But what concerns me more is the capture of Troy, Emma, and Noah. It seems that the enemy wants the powers of all seven Generals. For what is currently unknown, but all seven Power Sets in the enemy's hands is definitely something that must not happen."

"Agreed," Gia said. "Don't worry. We'll save the others. Or at least give them a helping hand. It wouldn't surprise me if they were already kicking Psychotick's butt right now."

Jake let slip a little smile, before surprising the other three, "Let's give a helping hand to General Mardi too. Even if he doesn't want it."

The other three were shocked that Jake, of all people, would say such a thing.

"Why?" Tensou asked, testing the waters.

"I may be hurt by his words," Jake explained, "and I'm allowed to, but as Rangers, we cannot turn our backs on someone in trouble. That is the vow we all took when we first became Rangers."

"'Powers or not, the safety of the innocent and powerless always comes first'," Gia recited. "You're right, Holling. Let's do it."

Gosei felt immense pride as Jake and Gia raced out of the base and to the coordinates that Tensou found.

Psychotick was the person, or thing, that greeted Troy when he woke up. Not a pleasant sight, to be honest. He glanced to his two sides and sigh in relief when he saw Noah on his right and Emma on his left, and both were awake as well.

"What are we doing here, monster?" Troy immediately asked.

"Sorry, I can't let any of you go yet," Psychotick taunted. "Not until Vrak has the Black and Yellow Rangers here too."

"What do you want with us?" Emma asked.

"I'm telling you Rangers a single thing," Psychotick replied. "I mean, why in any of the three realms would I tell you that Vrak wants General Mardi's powers for himself, as well as those of you Rangers, and that all he needs to complete the set is the Black and Yellow Rangers? Why would tell you Rangers our real plan?"

Troy was quiet, as was Noah and Emma. Noah raised an eyebrow, "That was easy."

"They don't come any dumber," Troy commented, before kicking Psychotick in his chest.

The monster stumbled back, before lunging forward. He went to strike Troy down, but the Red Ranger quickly turned around so that all Psychotick sliced was the bonds holding Troy hostage.

Once Troy was free, he used the sweeping kick from martial arts club earlier to briefly take the monster down.

Once Psychotick was out (for a few moments), Troy pulled out a pocket knife and cut through Noah and Emma's bonds.

"Here's the plan," he quietly told them. "You two stay here and hold him off. I'm going out to find General Mardi."

"Okay," both Pink and Blue replied.

Psychotick quickly recovered, and as he got to his feet, he grunted out, "You three aren't going anywhere."

"Your energy draining fun is over, you greedy bug," Emma said, before pulling out her Morpher, Noah and Troy following suit.

"Starforce, Shine Down!"

Noah and Emma quickly pulled out their Shark Bowgun and Phoenix Shot and fired at the monster repeatedly, letting the small cloud of smoke that formed provide Troy the time to sneak away from the fight.

~S~A~N~C~T~U~A~R~Y~~~P~O~W~E~R~~R~A~N~G~E~R~S~~S~T~A~R~F~O~R~C~E~~~M~E~G~A~F~O~R~C~E~~R~E~D~O~

In a different section of the same forest, Mardi came to trapped in a steel cage, embedded with the Toxic Mutants emblem and a tick attached to it.

He quickly glanced around for any means of escape, only to discover that there was none.

"Relax, General Mardi," Vrak revealed himself to be watching him. "You are my guest."

"Why do you look familiar?" Mardi couldn't help but ask.

Vrak chose to ignore that question and instead held up Mardi's morpher, "Such an interesting device. It tells me that the health of your spirit is almost half-drained. And you will lose more since this cage is more than a prison. It also drains your power."

Mardi immediately grabbed the bars and attempted to break free, only for a bright gold light to stop him. Vrak watched Mardi's struggle, before the latter gave up.

"I'm afraid that the harder you try to break those bars, the faster that tick up there will drain your energy. The more you struggle, General, the weaker you'll become."

"Your plan will not succeed," Mardi immediately said, fully understanding what Vrak was trying to do. "You will be stopped." He was angry. All he could do was stand here and wait until his energy was completely drained, by which he would be dead.

"By who?" Vrak almost laughed. "The Rangers? I highly doubt they'll come to save you. They saw how you endangered those humans. And...what was it you said about the Land Between once? Something about how they're not worth saving?"

"But are we sure The Land Between is still worth protecting?"

It was a genuine question at the time, but how did Vrak here know about that?!

"I'm testing them," Mardi honestly replied, "in my own way."

"So you doubt Gosei's method? And thereby the Boss's?" Vrak asked. "Interesting."

Again? That was stuff that Vrak should not have known about!

Vrak continued, "My point is that since you don't care about them, they won't care about you."

To be honest, that would be the determining factor of whether or not Mardi approved of the Rangers. But he was sincerely scared (at the moment) that his being cruel and mean to the Rangers would come back to bite him.

How could Gosei rely on those humans so much? Were they really all that special?

Would they come for him? Or was Vrak right?

Unless they were captured just like he was.

That though caused Mardi to grab the bars again. He tried to break out, but to no avail. His spirit energy was getting too low.

Vrak continued looking at Mardi's morpher, "I warned you. You might want to listen."

Mardi couldn't deny the anger he felt at this Vrak character, "I swear, if you did anything to those Rangers, I'll-!" He tried to break out once more, but, again, to no avail.

"You'll what?" Vrak asked, slightly amused, the screen in front of him reading 10%. "There's nothing you can do as long as you're in that cage. Besides, why the sudden change of heart? I thought you hated them."

"I thought I told you before," Mardi angrily replied. "Just because I'm testing them does not mean that I hate them."

"Could've fooled us, General!" cried a familiar voice. Vrak and Mardi both turned to see the Red Ranger standing there, fully morphed.

"Red Ranger," Mardi breathed. A Ranger came to save him?

"Let him go, Vrak!" Troy said.

"Why save him? He's only ever mean to you," Vrak reminded him.

"That's no excuse to turn our back on someone who needs help," Troy shot back, his fists clenching tightly.

"'Our'?" Mardi asked.

"When the five of us first accepted the powers you graciously gave us, General," Troy explained, "we all took a vow: 'Powers or not, the safety of the innocent and powerless always comes first'. Besides, you saved us yesterday, and now it's time we return the favor."

"You Rangers always make me laugh with how weak you are!" Vrak exclaimed. "Soon, General Mardi will be gone forever, and you're not strong enough to fight me alone. And good luck on back-up, because the General here is too weak to do anything at all."

Was this the peak of humanity? Was this why the Boss agreed to the test? To prove that miracles like this could happen?

Mardi said nothing, only removing his hands from the bars. Whatever power he had left, he would hold onto as much of it as possible.

He resigned to only watch as Troy charged towards Vrak, his Dragon Sword in hand.

Vrak and Troy exchanged a few blows, until Troy was sent to the ground. Vrak charged towards the fallen Ranger, intent on finishing him off, only to be stopped when Psychotick landed in a heap between Vrak and Troy.

Vrak turned back to Troy and saw the Blue and Pink Rangers help him back to his feet. Mardi clenched his fists tightly in frustration. He needed to help them, but this was also the perfect chance to see if they really were strong enough against a Toxic Mutant.

"What is this?" Vrak asked. "Psychotick! I thought I told you to deal with them?!"

"Well, I, uh..." Psychotick scrambled nervously for an answer.

"Hold it right there!" came another voice, and everyone saw the Black and Yellow Rangers (fully morphed) land on either side of the cage Mardi was in. The two turned to Mardi, with Jake continuing, "Listen, General, we have nothing to prove to you. We're also disgusted by how you treated those people earlier."

Gia explained, "But for good reason. We Rangers only use the powers you gave us to protect the innocent. This may be the Land Between to you, but this realm is our home. So we will use the Power given to us to protect our home and our fellow humans, our family and friends, until the end of time."

Mardi was quiet as he asked, "If you're so upset with me, then why would you choose to save me?"

"Because our morals won't allow us to ignore anybody in trouble, despite how rude they are to us," Jake replied. "Saving you may not be what we want to do, but it is the right thing to do."

Bam! There it was. That's exactly what he wanted to hear.

Jake and Gia both raised their weapons to break the cage, only for them to be shot by Vrak.

Mardi watched the two fall to the ground, before turning back to Vrak, seeing Psychotick having Troy under his foot and a strong grip on both Noah and Emma.

"Now that I have your attention, General," Vrak said, "you can witness the end of the Power Rangers!"

Mardi slammed his fist onto the floor of the cage. He had to help them, but he didn't have enough power!

"Now, thanks to you, both this realm and your own are finished!" Vrak continued to gloat.

Beside Mardi, Jake and Gia began to stir, "Jake, you okay?"

"Not really," Jake replied. He tried to get up, only to stumble back to the ground.

"It's over," Vrak said.

"No way," Noah immediately protested. "We'll never give up."

"No?" Vrak asked.

"Nope, we're doing great!" Jake said, giving a thumbs up to Mardi.

"As long as we're united," Emma stated, "there's always hope."

"Yeah, enjoy this little break before we take you down!" Gia added.

"We will find a way to defeat you!" Troy said. "Even if it's the last thing we do!"

'The last thing we do'?

Of course. That would definitely get him out of this cage, but it would also be the end of him, so he would have to end this fight quickly.

Did he have the guts to do it though? Could he really entrust the defeat of the Toxic Mutants all to the Rangers? Without him to help?

General Mardi made his choice right then.

Vrak turned towards the cage as the energy surged, before turning into a big explosion.

When it disappated, there stood General Mardi, free from his cage and ready to finish this.

"He's free!" Troy exclaimed.

Jake added, "And he's mad!"

Mardi sounded guilty when he spoke, but very sure of what he was about to do: "As you already tell, Vrak, this will be my last battle, but I will make it count. This realm is worth saving, and the Rangers themselves prove that. Rangers, please leave this one to me."

He then charged towards Vrak and knocked him and Psychotick off their feet, freeing Troy, Emma, and Noah.

Vrak and Psychotick got up, noticing that Mardi had his morpher back.

"Roar of the Lion, Starforce Knight!"

"Bet you can't take us!" Psychotick taunted.

"Prepare for destruction," Mardi warned, as the Rangers helped each other back on their feet. "Knight Blaster!"

"Forget it!" Psychotick gloated. "I've sucked up too much power for you to stop me now! Tick Attack!"

Mardi fired his Blaster, destroying the ticks before hitting the monster dead on. Vrak leapt out of the way in time, narrowly avoiding Mardi firing at Psychotick multiple times.

When the monster fell to his knees, Mardi then charged at Vrak, brandishing his Knight Blade. The two exchanged blows, before Mardi leapt into the air and landed a powerful strike against Vrak as he came back down. Vrak was knocked to the ground.

Psychotick ran over to Vrak, as Mardi pulled out his Vulcan Headder card and placed it inside his Morpher. He pressed the buttons for the number combination '8-4-8', before pressing the pound button.

"Summon Vulcan Headder!" Out of the Card came a red cynlindrical Headder and it landed in the Knight's hand. "Vulcan Cannon: Set!" He then inserted a 'Knight Dynamic' Card and pressed the numbers '4-7-4', which charged up the cannon. "Knight Dynamic: Fire!"

The blast hit both of their enemies, but Vrak somehow survived.

"Fine, I will give up my plan," Vrak said, before snapping his fingers. "For now." He would just have to wait until the time was right.

He then vanished as the Zombats flew towards Psychotick.

In a flash of blue, Psychotick was revived to giant size, "You'll pay for this big time!"

Mardi didn't notice that the Rangers had arrived at his side until Troy said, "Alright, Megazord time!"

Mardi was quick to stop him, "No, let me handle this. Please." His belt buckle suddenly glowed and three Power Cards leapt into Mardi's hand. "I have not showed you the full extent of my power yet."

He then walked forward and placed the first Card in his Morpher, "Knight Brothers!" He pressed in the code '2-6-2' before pressing pound. "Shine Down!"

Two headders emerged from the card, one blue and one red. The blue one, the Sea Lion Mechazord, hooked up to a small cruise ship, while the red one, the Sky Lion Mechazord, hooked up to an airship.

"Nonsense!" Psychotick was not happy. "I'm putting my foot down! On your heads!" The Rangers quickly backed up, only for the two Mechazords to fly overhead and strike the monster hard.

Seeing this, Mardi pressed in the code and morphed into the Lion Mechazord, "Groundion Form: Shine Down!"

"Lion Zord: Morph!"

Another card was placed into his morpher, and after typing in the code '3-5-3', the three Zords began to come together. "Zords Combine! Groundion Megazord, Ready!"

The Megazord and the monster faced each other.

"It's time to finish you off and then squad the Rangers!" Psychotick said. "I'll take you apart, zord by zord!"

The two then exchanged blows (or tried to, on Psychotick's part), with the Rangers below debating on whether or not to help. It seemed like General Mardi could take this guy alone, but his choice of words just now was worrying the Rangers.

What did he mean by 'last battle'?

The Megazord easily picked up Psychotick and tossed him to the ground. The monster, however, quickly got back up and launched another Tick Attack.

The Rangers called out warnings to Mardi, but he just walked towards the Tick Attack with confidence and knocked each of them away with ease.

The Megazord then performed a Sea Lion kick on Psychotick, causing him to go flying once more. Mardi then released the Sky Lion Mechazord, which landed one last hit on Psychotick, before Mardi inserted another card into his morpher.

He typed in the code '9-1-9' and then the pound button, "Victory Charge: Shine Down!"

"I'm not done!" Psychotick said, just before he was hit with missles and then a solid punch from the Megazord itself.

The Rangers watched as Psychotick exploded, signaling the end of him for good.

But their celebration was cut short by Gosei calling them over their Morphers.

"Gosei, what's up?"

"You must bring General Mardi to the Star Cave," Gosei said, and he sounded frantic. "Now!"

"We're on it," Jake said.

The Rangers had succeeded in getting the General to the base, and the sun was setting now. Tensou explained to the Rangers why Gosei was so frantic.

General Mardi's spirit had run out of energy, and now he was dying.

"I deeply apologize to you Rangers for my cruelty and rudeness," Mardi was giving his final words. "Even if I was trying to help, there's no excuse for that kind of behavior. And even if you say you have nothing to prove to me, I still give you my approval. You still have much to learn, all five of you, but you are indeed the right choices to carry those Powers."

The Rangers wanted to ask him so many things, so many questions, but they didn't want to interrupt him now.

"I hate to admit it, but Vrak's plan did work to an extent," Mardi continued. "I only managed to break out of that cage because I decided to use my remaining life force to do so. My spirit will move on into the next stage of the transmigration cycle, but my shell will be here. Gosei will now be able to fight alongside you all. Black and Yellow Rangers, thank you for freeing me, and I'm content with this. I'm just upset that I can't see what the Land Betwen has to offer its residents. What makes it so special." Jake and Gia both managed a sad smile.

The five Rangers and two other spirit beings could only watch as the red visor of the Starforce Knight body turned to black, and Mardi's spirit leave it before dispersing into sparkles.
