Initiation
Hector watched in mute horror as the old man crumpled on to the deck with a cry of shock. His blood soaked the wood in front of the boy. He would always remember the sight of the stain, still there even after days at sea, and the look of pleasure on his captain's face as he yanked his sword out of the corpse with a squishing sound. He held the gory weapon out to Hector with an encouraging smile.
"You see that boy there?" He nodded toward a prisoner even younger than Hector. "Kill him."
Hector took the sword with a trembling hand.
"Yes father."
