This Chapter's POV is Ferntail. This is sort of a Flashback Chapter ( The first half ) where it continues after Chapter 1. Then there will be a really long line break and then it'll go out of the flashback ( present ). FYI, Annabeth is my favorite character by far. I am reeeeaaaaly biased towards her. It'll be clear soon why I'm telling you this. Also, in this fic, the clan leaders don't ask the cats whether they want to be the mentor, just say it during the apprentice ceremony.
" You know everything? " I asked.
" I spoke to Cinderheart. I told her how you were always such a mystery to me, and that I had a dream about you. "
" Cinderheart told you? You had a dream about me? " I tilted my head.
" A dream sent by Starclan, " he continued. My ear twitched. " I saw Bluestar. She told me there was a cat in Thunderclan that was special. I looked into the lake, and saw you. "
I curled my tail around me.
" You're special. Cinderheart told me that you have... certain... abilities. Would you like to show me? " He asked.
He didn't sound menacing or threatening, but I knew he wasn't exactly asking.
" There are many things that I can do. I'll demonstrate something not as destructive as others. "
He looked curious.
" Think about something. Anything. It doesn't matter. A cat, a color, a number, fresh-kill. Doesn't matter. " I instructed.
I closed my eyes and concentrated. I entered his mind.
What's she doing? Why does she want me to think about something? And why doesn't it matter? I'm a slave to my own curiosity. Thinking about Sandstorm. Sandstorm. Sandstorm.
I opened my eyes. " Sandstorm. " I said cooly.
His eyes widened.
" Yeah. " I said. That's me trying to be modest.
" It's clear that you are indeed special. "
" Did Cinderheart tell you about my mother? " I regretted it when I said it. If she hadn't, then he would ask me about it.
" She did. Did you ever meet your real mother? "
" I never have. Only Lionblaze knew her, and he won't tell me anything about her. " I answered, sadness laced through my voice.
" Why did you hide it? " he asked sincerely.
" I don't know. When I was young, Cinderheart and Lionblaze told me to never tell anyone. No one should know anything. " I said fiercely.
" They told you to lie to your clanmates? To me? Because they thought we would throw you out of the clan or something? " He asked.
Wow. That cat has a lot of questions.
" I still remember the conversation. " I said wistfully.
" Fernkit, please come sit with us. " My father said.
I nodded and sat down next to him, my mom in front of me.
" Fernkit, you're not normal. You're... different than other cats. You can do special things, that other cats can't. " Cinderheart said gently.
" What kind of special things? Why can't other cats do that? " I asked.
" We're not sure. As you grow up, these 'abilities' will reveal themselves. " Lionblaze explained.
" How do you know about these 'abilities' if I don't have them yet. " I felt very smart saying that.
" Your mother told me. Fernkit, Cinderheart is not your mother. "
" Cinderheart is not my mother!? " I asked, appalled.
" Your mother warned us about your abilities. I haven't seen her since. " Lionblaze continued.
" You can't tell anyone. If anyone found out, then they would get scared of you. You might be thrown out of the clan. " Cinderheart warned.
" I don't want that! " I exclaimed, worriedly.
" You will have to lie your whole life. It will be hard for you, but necessary. " Lionblaze finished.
" If Cinderheart isn't my mother, then what is she? " I asked, not looking at her.
" I'm your adoptive mother. "
" What does that mean? "
" It means that I am not your biological mother, but I still love you. " She said solemnly.
I trusted her, despite finding out she wasn't my real mother. I swore to myself that I would become a great liar and no one would ever know anything about me.
" Do you know the name of your mother? " Firestar asked.
" Athena. "
Firestar was silent for a while.
I realized he must have heard the name before.
" There was more to my dream. Bluestar told me that you are connected to Starclan in a way that no one will understand. Starclan will stand beside you no matter what. "
Stand beside me no matter what? I sucked in a breath.
" She said that you see the warrior code as an option. " He continued slyly.
I looked away guiltily.
" That's fine of course. It seems Starclan is OK with it, so I am as well. " He said.
REALLY LONG LINE BREAK [ INSERT HERE ]
I grabbed a piece of fresh kill and brought it to Silentclaw in the nursery.
" Hi, Silentclaw. How are the kits? " I asked, dropping the vole in front of her.
" Thanks. They're really excited about becoming apprentices. Softkit tells me she'd like you to be her mentor. "
" I think I'd like that. She'll be a great warrior. " I was kind of embarrassed about it, but I liked that Softkit wanted me to be her mentor.
Softkit bounded over and barreled into me.
" Ferntail! " She screeched.
" So, you're going to be an apprentice tomorrow! " I laughed, sitting down and curling my tail around myself.
" Yes! Smallkit, Butterkit, and I were talking about who we wanted to be our mentor. Butterkit wants Petalnose and Smallkit wants Brackenfur. I wanted you to be my mentor! " She rambled.
" Funny, I wanted you to be my apprentice! " I laughed.
Her eyes widened. " Really? "
I had met Silverfur about 5 sunrises ago and he told me that he had just gotten an apprentice. Lightpaw.
" One step closer to deputy. " He had said.
I sat silently in the back, praying to Starclan that Softkit would become my apprentice.
" Softpaw, your mentor will be Ferntail. " Firestar said.
I celebrated in my head.
" Thank Starclan. " I whispered. Softpaw was practically jumping up and down.
" I hope Ferntail will pass down all she knows to you, " he turned his gaze to me, " Ferntail, please come up to Highledge. "
I leaped up and stood in front of Firestar.
" Ferntail, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Hollyleaf and have shown yourself to be thoughtful and determined. You will be the mentor of Softpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to her. " He said.
I touched noses with Softpaw and she gave Firestar a respectful lick on the shoulder.
The clan called out Softpaw's new name before Firestar moved on to Butterkit. Her mentor turned out to be Petalnose, who seemed really excited as well.
And Smallkit didn't get Brackenfur like she wanted but was still really happy with getting Hazeltail.
We leaped off of the Highledge and Softpaw couldn't stop jumping around in circles.
" OK, " I laughed, " calm down, Softpaw. "
" Sorry. I'm just excited. " She said.
" I am, too. Come on, I'll show you the territory. " I said, gesturing with my tail for her to follow me.
We had gone through the entire territory excluding the Shadowclan border.
She was doing the same thing I had told her to at the Windclan border. She took in a deep breath, trying to store the scent in her brain. I sniffed the scent.
Riverclan. Silver. Thankfully, Softpaw didn't realize.
" I'm going to go renew the scent markers. Wait here. " I told her.
I followed the scent with my eyes closed until I bumped into a cat.
I opened my eyes. " Silver! What are you doing here! "
" It's an emergency! I had to talk to you! " He said defensively.
" I don't have much time. Softpaw is waiting for me. "
" Softpaw? " He asked.
I looked down, sort of embarrassed. Which I shouldn't have been, it's Silver. " Um, yeah. She's my apprentice. "
" You have an apprentice now? That's amazing! I know how much you wanted it. " He said.
" As of today. But she's waiting for me. Can you come back tonight? " I whispered.
He hesitated, but nodded.
He was about to turn away, but I stopped him. " Silver- " he turned around.
" Great job trespassing on Shadowclan territory. " I laughed.
He rolled his gorgeous eyes, and dashed off.
I sprinted back to Softpaw.
" OK, Softpaw. We should go back to camp. "
She nodded and we raced back to camp. I won very easily, but we both had fun.
I taught her how to do apprentice chores, and left her to go get mousebile from Jayfeather.
I remembered I used to help Jayfeather all the time when I was an apprentice.
ANOTHER FLASHBACK [ INSERT REALLY LONG LINE BREAK HERE ]
" Hi! You're Jayfeather, right? " I said, walking into the medicine cat den.
He was my father's brother, but I had only met him once. When I was born.
He turned around. His blue sightless eyes darting around the room.
" Yes, Fernpaw. What do you need? " He asked.
" Hollyleaf told me to get her some Marigold. " I said, looking around.
" I keep the herbs in the wall over there. " He gestured with his tail. " While you're there, can you get me some cobwebs? "
Hollyleaf had told me that Marigold was a yellow flower. I found it easily. Along with the cobwebs.
I brought it to him and set it down in front of him. I tilted my head.
" You're blind, right? " I asked.
He turned to me and looked appalled.
" Most people don't mention that when I'm present. "
" I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. But if you are blind, what's the use of pretending you're not? You know about it, so why deny it? Why tip-toe around it? That's not going to fix anything. " I said solemnly.
He stayed silent for a while. I would have said he was staring at me, but he couldn't see me.
" You're not like other cats. They usually try to ignore it to spare me. That makes me feel worse, though. " He was quiet for a bit more.
Hollyleaf stormed through, bleeding.
" Fernpaw, what is taking so long? " She seethed.
Jayfeather, who could obviously smell the blood, yelled: " Why didn't you come straight to me when you got hurt! "
Hollyleaf sighed and then rolled her eyes.
I helped Jayfeather tend to her, learning a few herbs.
Hollyleaf got up to leave, when Jayfeather stopped her.
" You can send Fernpaw here anytime. I think she could help me a lot. "
I beamed. I really liked Jayfeather already.
END FLASHBACK [ INSERT REALLY LONG LINE BREAK HERE ]
I did in fact spend a lot of time with Jayfeather after that. I learned all of the herbs and how to tend to all sorts of injuries. Just like a medicine cat apprentice, without going to half-moon meetings.
It would be a nice experience for Softpaw if she could learn the same way.
I went to my nest to rest. Berryfur's blood still stuck in the moss. I curled up and thought about Silver. What did he want to talk about so badly he trespassed onto Shadowclan territory? I fell asleep thinking of him.
In Silverfur's next POV Chapter, ( I think that will be Chapter 12 ) and he and Ferntail will talk about 'the emergency'. That relates more to the 'dream' stuff mentioned in Chapter 1. Also, I think it's a bit weird how the warriors in this fic are always taking naps! Like, when do they have time for the important stuff they have to do? But there are a lot of cats in every clan. So they can afford to do that.
