I was inspired by A Certain Scientific Railgun for this arc, so if you know it and think there are resemblances, that's why.
Fratellanza
"Welcome to your new home for the year that is to come!" the university president said from the stage. They had troubles with his mic at first.
Arro and I were sitting at the back of the auditorium. I was between him and the allay between the other rows. I tried to spot any familiar faces, and by this I mean people I may have heard of or met under professional circumstances.
"I am very delighted to welcome you all today. All of you are the elite of the new generation that will forge our world in the coming years." I shot a look at the front of the row next to us.
We all wore our jacket, basically our whole uniform. Back when Dino and I were in Mafia School, the uniform was a white dressed shirt with a black tie, a brown blazer and green checkered pants for boys, green checkered skirts for girls. The shoes were usually classy ones and black.
They had shitty fashion senses, I know.
Now it was university, we had a blazer. It was maroon, with a breast pocket on the right. The letters 'UdE' were sewed in in silver. Other than that we were free to wear what we wanted. The one thing was we had to wear this jacket pretty much all the time as long we were on this island.
Mafia Uni it was called. Bad name, I know.
And yes, it was just a jacket but having to wear it all the time to basically brag about our school was…
I sighed.
"I am sure all of your are familiar with the ways of our world and have had 'advice' given to you by your sponsors! However, no matter who these sponsors are or who your Family is, for the coming year anyone wearing the same jacket as yours will be your Family. The entire teaching team hopes the bonds you will make will not be forgotten once you have completed your time here. We will organize out of school activities and group activities for you to learn how to work together, which will help you in your future as well. It is then mandatory for all of you to sign up for at least two activities. It can be sports, music, whatever you see that is interesting to you. Extra classes to help you in some field are also available on the several campuses on the city. The purpose will be explained name there. My name is Eduardo Marzoni, and once again, I am glad to welcome you during the coming year. I will now let my colleague introduce themselves."
As the teachers were introducing themselves one by one, I looked at Arro. We were all given a list of our classes when we registered and the first day schedule.
I felt kind of bad for the teachers who had to do this reunion six times.
I looked at his paper. We had all of Mafia Histories classes together, but he wasn't in Law. He was in Flame Theory and Development and regular science...classes. I had hesitated to pick Flame Theory as well, but I knew Arro was really interested by this so I could rely on him for that.
Also, on our papers the name of our sponsors were not revealed. Only us and people working in the university we were enrolled in knew it. Only the country was written on the papers, and a small flag accompanied it.
'For language barrier purposes'. Well, I couldn't argue this argument but…
Whatever.
I also knew, through Dino, that the Skies enrolled in one of the universities could very well be looking for Elements as well. I wasn't surprised.
Getting a full set was an achievement. Federico only had two and he was just months away from inheriting the Vongolas.
"What will you sign up for?" I whispered to my best friend.
"Huh...maybe a music club, and fencing. Well, a combat sport for sure and I'm hesitating with a regular one as well, depends on what they have." He smirked at me and nudged me in the ribs. "Hey, go for martial arts. You haven't been in a competition since you left China." I scoffed.
"I said goodbye to competitions years ago."
"Heh, getting second-place really traumatized you, you perfectionist." I glared at him. "Get in music or fencing as well, maybe you can learn how to keep a sword in hands."
"I'm not that into music like you are."
"I love our piano guitar/singing jam sessions."
"Hun hun."
We got our schedules and were free to go to let the next batch of students inside.
I frowned, feeling a few stares on us while we were walking through the flow of students. I heard words like 'VARIA' and also 'Haneuma' but ignored them. I knew Dino and Xanxus would attract unwanted attention.
Arro and I were...not 'known' yet. Arro did a great job at keeping his relationship with Superbi under the radar in Chicago. Among the Vongolas, CEDEF and Cavallones, people knew me or of me, but apart from them, I was just Cavallone's younger sister. I was pretty sure I entered CEDEF without anyone screaming it to the world, and people present at the party where Federico introduced me as his Cloud Guardian may have forgotten by now as he passed away.
Arro grabbed pamphlets about the clubs available and we sat down on a bench outside, next to the college canteen. People were sitting down in the grass.
"Singing club check, fencing check..." he listed with a pen in his hand. "Hum...baseball or football..."
"You're good at the two, pick the one you prefer," I told him idly, turning my pen in my hand.
"What about you?"
"None of them really catch my interest."
"You've got karate, judo, taekwendo and others as well as the track team." I scoffed.
"With my asthma I can't really get in such sports. Maybe gymnastics would be good..."
"Not that I would dislike seeing you in a leotard moving around on some music, but you'd be better in martial arts. Isn't it about how well you are in your mind as well? It could be good to...focus." I sighed.
"I guess so..." I widened my eyes and crossed one. "Target shooting! Now that's something I can do!"
"Get into taekwendo at least." I sighed.
"Fine, fine, I'll do taekwendo...and karate. Happy?"
"Yup!"
"Hiiieee!" Tsuna dodged a hammer, but barely, when he made an Italian mistake. "Learning a new language is hard Reborn!"
"I don't care, you'll speak it everyday and several others for business in a couple of years Tsuna." Leon went back to being a chameleon.
"Senpai was better than you..."
"What was that?" the ex-Arcobaleno asked his student, a dangerous glint in his eyes. Now in a five year-old body, he was more threatening than before.
"Nothing!" Reborn sat back down, petting Leon. "By the way, senpai and Arro-san started university, didn't they?" Reborn nodded.
"Yes. Arro signed up for football, singing and fencing clubs. Bakana is in the target shooting, taekwendo and karate clubs." Tsuna averted his eyes to the ceiling, the lead of his pencil tapping against his homework.
"I wonder what a Mafia university is like."
"With your grades you can wonder what university is like period, because you'll never step a foot inside." Tsuna blushed in anger.
"Hey! I'm better now!" Reborn scoffed.
"Sure." A thoughtful look took place of the Vongola's features. "What?"
"It's just that...Takeshi called her and I did as well, but she was not in the mood for talking so it was short. It's..." He sighed. "I don't want her to avoid us because of Hibari-san."
"Let it be for now, she's busy anyway."
Tsuna nodded halfheartedly. He remembered as clear as day the moment when he saw her in town, eyes sad and lost.
He remembered how much she cried in his arms because of Hibari and how much she said she wanted to go home.
Three days later she was in a plane for Italy.
On some days, it was heavy for him to keep the reason they 'broke up' if he could put it that way to himself. Luciana just spilled everything to him. She didn't ask him to keep it a secret, neither did Hibari, who was harsher and stricter since she left, but he would.
Hibari...Tsuna never thought he would say that one day, but he was just plain cold. He was before, but he never thought it could get worst. He was good at pretending he didn't care about Luciana leaving but his Hyper Intuition kept tingling each time he was thinking about these two.
"What are you daydreaming for Dame-Tsuna?"
"Nothing! It was nothing!"
"Heh? Why would I want to..." Kyo glared at me from across the table.
"Why don't you want to tell Yamamoto Takeshi you're not interested?"
"Well...I don't want to hurt his feelings and all but...yeah, I guess it's better if I tell him I only see him as a friend." I stood up and put my dirty dishes in my sink, Kyo's gaze lingering on me. I only had panties and his uniform shirt on, so basically what I usually wore the morning after we had sex. "I have an appointment to get my coil in the afternoon." He perked up at that.
"It's not that perverted doctor, is it?"
"No, I asked for a woman." He seemed relieved and I smirked. "But Shamal was clear, in the following twenty-four hours nothing gets inside of me down there and we have to keep using our regular means of contraception for seven days afterward."
"Seven days is nothing after two months..." he mumbled under his breath before standing up.
I pulled him down to my level when he put his cup in the sink, stealing a deep, long kiss from him. He didn't reply to it.
"Seriously, I'm looking for courage and you're not giving me any!" I said, stomping away.
"You shouldn't have led him on."
"I never did!"
The conversation was awkward. Takeshi was flustered, embarrassed and said he was already 'over' me, so there was no reason to change anything in my behavior. I didn't really believe him but let it go, not wanting to keep talking about this subject any longer.
I still felt a little bit bad when I went home that day. Kyoya was petting Hibird, so I sat down next to him.
"Why aren't you in school?"
"Because." I swear that guy.
"It's done. It was very awkward."
"Hn."
"Would you care even just a lit...ahh!" I had turned around to face him and it was all he needed to bite me in the neck. "You...Vampire..." He licked the bite mark, sending wonderful shivers in my whole body.
"Marked," he whispered against my skin.
"...jerk..."
"Hn." Yet, I knew he had this small yet satisfied smile I had had the pleasure to discover for the past couple of months.
There were ten students from various universities.
We were in the control center, the place that was overlooking the whole city and in charge of maintaining order.
I exchanged a look with Arro.
We were summoned there without further information.
"Hello to you all," a man in his thirties greeted us. He was wearing black boots, in which were tucked black pants. He had a tight black long-sleeved shirt with a sleeveless jacket over it. His hair was shaved close to the skull and piercing dark green eyes examined all of us.
From the cold expression on his face, he didn't seem very nice. He had seen things.
"Runts," he started gruffly, "welcome to the control center. We're in charge of maintaining the neutrality on this island. If you're all here today, it's because in your entrance exams you ranked among the best, all universities included. It means you will be a part of the patrolling team." He snapped his fingers and black armbands were given to all of us.
Would I ever get away from these things?
"You will report here everyday between six and eight in the morning depending on when your first class starts. You will be given your schedule of the day adapted to your studies and club schedules." His eyes briefly narrowed when they went on Arro and I. "As you know, Dying Will Flames are not allowed on this island for students. Even ourselves need to have authorizations in order to use them if needed. You will be all given a device allowing you to use your flames between thirty seconds and one minutes a day if a situation requires it. We are trusting you not to overuse them, especially for purposes other than keeping order." He started pacing in front of us. "Questions?" A girl with beautiful crop platinum hair raised her hand.
She didn't seem like she was there to joke around. Looking more closely to all of us, there were only three girls.
They picked the best and sadly, today women were still not regarded as 'fighters' or 'active' for most of the Mafia. The other girl was clearly African but not in our school. Maybe she was Nigerian as Nigerian organized crime was big. They were in Italy even when the market was already crowded.
I looked away when she caught me looking at her.
"How qualified are you to be our commander sir?" He grinned, but it was cold.
"Good question runt. The name's Helios Samaras, Greek. I was the Storm Officer in the previous VARIA generation." I raised a brow.
Really? Was it why he narrowed his eyes at us? He saw our relatives in us?
I looked around. It seemed like most of them were in awe at this.
"Is it enough?"
"Yes Commander Samaras!" she said, straight as a ramrod.
I tended to forget that the VARIA was famous and feared in the entire Mafia. After living a few months with them and working as the Cloud Officer with three men I personally recruited under my orders, it didn't seem that hard to reach.
But once again, I was born in a certain position that made me skip the regular Mafioso path and progression. My Fratello was the VARIA Boss, of course I'd get stuff easily from them.
"I will proceed to introduce each of you from the information we have. It means name, sponsor and your ranking in the exams. None of this must fall in others' ears, understood?" He grinned again. "Or you want a taste of VARIA Quality?"
"Tch, he's not even in it anymore..." a Caucasian guy muttered at the end of the line. Helios calmly went to him.
"Say that again?"
"I said that..." He didn't see the fist coming to the pit of his stomach, right between his ribs.
He fell to his knees, spitting. The guy next to me suddenly tensed. There was a heavy feeling in the air. Didn't they see the fist coming either?
Helios started to list information about the guy. I listened to them quietly, knowing they could come in handy at some point.
"Nadja Ilunga," he said, stopping in front of the African girl. She had shoulder-length very curly black hair in braids, light brown eyes, a broad nose, full lips and her skin was the same shade as milk chocolate. She was dressed like any of us and was not in our school. The letters on her navy blue blazer were 'UdA', or Università del Attaco.
Our school didn't have any specialization, it was 'greater than the others' in everything. The other four though had specialization. One was specialized in fighting, the UdA. The one where Jeremiah and Zelia both were due to them being in the Weaponry Family was the UdS, Università delle Scienze. It was the campus on which was the research center. Then there was the UdP, Università della Politica. The last one was the UdC, Università del Commercio.
Needless to say, the name of the university defined pretty well what your role would be in your Family.
"Sponsor: Mangrove Family. Flame: Lightning. Ranked fifth for the written exam, ninth for the contextual exam and fifth for the fighting exam." There was a displeased frown on her face at the last ranking.
She winced when she stopped his punch, but barely. She didn't see the kick coming.
"Not bad." He kept going until he reached Arro. He frowned at the paper but Arro remained unbothered. "Huh. Arroganza De Luca. Sponsor: Vongola, VARIA." Everybody looked at him, were they being obvious or not. "From how a sponsorship works and your hair color, I'd say you're related to a particularly loud one."
"My family has no reason to be brought up sir." Good, Arro wouldn't let him get under his skin.
"Of course. Flames: Storm and Rain." Everybody was staring. "Graduated from the Chicago Mafia School last June. Seventh in the contextual exam...oh, ranked third in the fighting exam." I felt my left eyebrow twitching.
What?
Arro was third?
The same Arro who had his future self's memories and got rid of a Vindice with the Vongola Tenth? The Arro who could handle Hibari Kyoya?
That Arro?
My best friend frowned and ducked the high kick. He didn't wait for him to attack again though. We were allowed to have our weapons with us but not use them. However, he was being attacked.
He grabbed the knife hidden between his pants and back and placed it against Helios' carotid. Everybody forgot to breath except for me, who was used to him. He got better since he left Namimori.
Through me he ended up having access to...good tutors, like Fon, or Reborn as well in a way.
"Good kid, you'll go far." He stepped on the side and stopped in front of me. "Luciana Cavallone. Sponsor: Cavallone." Now everybody was staring at me. I heard someone said 'related' and that some strings were pulled in my favor.
As if. Dino was too scared of Reborn to try something like that.
"Flames: Mist, Cloud...Sky?" I frowned a little at the unwanted attention of me. "Graduated from the Sicily Mafia School...four years ago?" Too much attention, too much. Couldn't he be quicker? "Ranked first in the contextual and fighting exams?" I took a deep, sharp breath. Arro pinched my back discreetly. If everyone was impressed by his information, then what about mine?
Helios placed the files he had under his armpit and folded his arms.
"Thinking about it, I know Haneuma Dino has an adopted sister and was trained by the famous Reborn for years." He showed me with a movement of his chin. "It's you, isn't it? You trained under the Sun Arcobaleno."
"Sun and Storm Arcobalenos sir." The guy next to me took a deep breath. I heard the word 'favoritism' coming from somewhere.
"Well..." I saw his fist coming. I grabbed it, flipped him around and put my foot on his shoulder joint, my other foot keeping his other hand against the floor, palm against the floor. My hands were keeping his arm stretched out in a painful position. "Yeah...training makes wonders." I let go of him when he told me to.
Arro patted my shoulder and I sighed while Helios got up, rubbing his shoulder.
He kept going until he stopped to a guy wearing the same blazer as Arro and I. He was Asian, Chinese even I think. His black hair was short and in spikes. Slanted brown eyes were staring back at Helios. His skin was very fair. However, from his built, he was slightly shorter than Arro, I could say he was into Martial Arts.
"Jie Niú. Sponsor: The Black Dragon." So Chinese. Although...I had heard about this before I think… "Flame: Sun. Graduated from the Black Society School in Hong Kong a year ago. Ranked second in contextual exam and fighting exams." This got me interested.
The glare he sent my way also got me interested.
Did I know that guy?
"He doesn't seem to like you Lulu..." I scoffed.
The Black Dragon?
Helios let go of us, saying we would start tomorrow. We quickly dispersed but Jie was in the same streetcar as us. As we walked back to the dorms, he kept following us, reading a book.
Hell, he was in the same elevator!
"Seriously dude, you're following us!?" Arro snapped at him. Jie didn't raise his eyes, turning a page of his book.
"I live on the third floor," he replied in a perfect, flawless Italian.
When I left the elevator, Arro following me, he shot me a quick, challenging look. The doors closed on him and I shook my head, opening my door.
"Jesus!" Arro said, throwing his bag on my bed before falling on it. "Talk about a day!"
"Yeah..." I replied, throwing him a brick of orange juice.
"Did you meet that guy when you were living in China?"
"It's a possibility. I'm pretty sure the Black Dragon is..."
"Chinese Triads?"
"Yeah. Hong Kong, where he went to school, is slightly different than Mainland China though. But...it must be a black society..."
"Black society?" I nodded and sat down on the chair of my desk.
"Yeah. Chinese organized crime in Mainland Chinese is divided in two groups: the dark force, loosely organized groups, and black societies, more mature criminal organizations. The big difference is that black societies often get control over local markets and operate under the police protection. They turn a blind eye on their operations in fear of reprisal."
"Basically...it's gangs and good old Mafia in our dear old Italy?"
"I guess you could put it that way." I sighed.
I'd call Fon but...with what happened with Kyoya, I was uncomfortable calling him. I could still call Reborn, he'd know.
"We have to call Lussuria!" Arro blinked at me in confusion.
"Why?"
"Because he's the only VARIA Officer who was already there when Tyr was the Boss! Maybe Alaric would know something as well as they tried to recruit him, but we call Lussuria and we can get information on Helios."
"Well you call him, I only have Xanxus' and Superbi's numbers." I rolled my eyes.
"I...I never bothered to get their numbers..." I sighed and called my brother. He picked up almost immediately, so I moved from the chair to next to Arro so that he could listen as well.
"Is your hair back to black yet?"
"No?"
"I have nothing to tell you then."
"Good, I'm not calling you to talk to you! I want to talk to Lussuria!" The line was silent.
"Why do you want to talk to the gay trash and not me?" I sighed.
"Because I have...questions for him."
"Questions?"
"Just do it!" He cursed under his breath and I heard him walking.
"Trash."
"Boss, do you need something? Your phone? Hello?"
"Lussuria."
"Ah Lu-chan! How are you?" I rolled my eyes at the nickname. He tried to call me 'Lulu' but Arro did not like it.
"Fine, listen do you know a guy called Helios Samaras?" He was dead silent for a few seconds. "Lussuria?"
"I'm here, it's just I haven't heard that name in years! He was Tyr's Storm Officer. Why?"
"We've just met him."
"Oh my, he's still alive?"
"It seems so. Any important things we should know?"
"Hum...he's skilled. He became good at planning strategies through battle experience, but Squ-chan is still better than him. I'd comment on Squ-chan but the Boss is glaring at me so I won't. He used brass knuckles back in the day. When Squ-chan defeated Tyr and gave the Boss position to the Boss, he quit saying that as the Boss was not his Sky, he had no reason to stay."
"Xanxus let him go?"
"I have no use for trash who aren't loyal," my brother's oh so kind voice said gruffly. "What does he do?"
"Well the top ten students were called to make a patrol team to maintain order. He's the big boss of the control center I think."
"You got in?"
"Sure, but shouldn't you worry for the one you're sponsoring?" He scoffed. "He's in, but surprisingly he ranked third in the fighting exam."
"Stupid trash."
"Xanxus."
"You called just for that?"
"Yeah, that's pretty much it. You already know about my clubs."
"Give him the phone." I did and Arro braced himself.
Classes started, I would hang out with Zelia, Jeremiah and Arro every once in a while and patrol. It seemed like because I had the best ranking, I was restricted to the research center.
Entering the facilities would be tough. I couldn't use illusions or flames period and I didn't really have much equipment. That and the fact I couldn't really trust anyone in here...
Nobody was stupid. Getting dirt on other Families would happen. Yeah, they didn't disclose our sponsors but we all had our ways to get information.
Still, I would need to find a way to get inside.
Although...Verde worked here, didn't he?
Now it was something I could use.
