Note: The OC Trixie and her mom do not belong to me. They belong to Liana, a great TD artist. Check her out on Instagram ( tdramaliana) and Deviantart (8liana8)! With that out of the way, let's begin!
The city of Nashville, Tennessee is known all over the world as one of the music capitals of the world, with the endless focus on it, especially country, and how the artistry truly shines. Because of this, many people every day take the opportunity to express themselves vocally and draw the attention of millions that flock to the city every day… and yet, ironically, out of everyone in the city, there's only one person who doesn't like expressing himself too much. In a medium-sized quiet apartment lies one Adwin Dubois, a high school student who only expresses himself through what he paints. At almost every other point, he is as stoic as he can be, a side effect of being too into his art, which is something that he's doing right now actually, one of a very realistic sunflower.
"Just a few more drops and…" says Adwin, painting some raindrops onto his creation. These are the final touches to his piece. "...done! A Sun in the Dark!"
His titular piece is just another one of the many paintings he has created during the many times that he's isolated himself. The many in his room aren't even the only ones, as plenty were also around the apartment. Yeah, he loves painting… a little too much but it's his passion. And, if he had to be honest, if that means he doesn't have to interact with anyone, he'll take any chance he can get. Little did he know that was about to change as his mother, Jolene Dubois, opened the door to his room.
"Adwin… dear?" She slowly addresses her teenage son just as he finishes his piece.
"Hi, mom! Just finishing up another piece. Is everything okay?"
"Well… actually, can we talk? For just a moment?" She lets herself in and closes the door, sitting on his bed and patting it to let him join her.
"Wait… I didn't do anything wrong did I," he asks, panicking a bit.
"Oh, no no no, you're not in trouble! Actually…it's about what's gonna happen this summer. And don't worry, your grades are good, I'm not mad or anything but… you haven't really been socializing a lot and… it's got me worried, you know?"
"Oh… well, I don't think I really need socialization. Why would I wanna risk embarrassing myself when I could remain in the confines of my room?"
"Adwin, listen." Not said in an angry tone but one where she obviously wants Adwin to be successful. "I know you don't really "get" people but you gotta grow out of it bud! So now for the news that I wanted to tell you… Some people are going to be living with us for the summer."
"O-oh." He may not seem like it but on the inside, he's panicking. Big time. Like, he never actually talked to people before so to hear about what is apparently a group of them coming to live here? With him?
"I know this is tough, but trust me, just at least give them a try. Who knows? You might grow fond of them."
"I mean… I don't know… who even are these people being with us?"
"You've probably heard me mention Emma? One of my friends from beauty school?"
"Oh yeah… you do sometimes talk about her when you're doing my hair. What about her?"
"Well, she has a big summer gig as a hairstylist for Barry Winston! You know, the country star?"
"Oh… well congratulations to them… I guess." Adwin scratches his head. He does feel genuinely happy for her but his stoicism makes it a little hard to notice
"Don't worry, you'll get some time to talk to them soon. But right now I gotta pick em' up from the airport! Now I do trust you home alone, of course, but maybe you should do something with all of… this." She gestures to the rest of the apartment, which isn't too messy but could benefit from some cleaning. "Just make sure the apartment is straight before I get back, d'accord?"
After a few moments of silence, Adwin answers back.
"Oui." He's still nervous about having to share an apartment with other people but whoever's coming is a good friend of his mom's. He should somewhat try to appear more open… right?
When his mom leaves the room and out the front door, Adwin lies in his bed for a bit, pondering over how difficult getting along is gonna be for him.
"Well," he thinks, "if it's only, like, two people I guess it'll be fine…"
He makes this assumption as he gets up to clean the house. He could only wonder what the two roommates will be like… but considering that the airport is not far from their home (benefits to living in the city), he wouldn't have long to wait…
Adwin, during the time that his mother was gone, gave the living room a good sweeping, prepared the guest bedroom, and in general made the apartment feel more welcoming. And just in time too, as just as he's finishing the bedroom, he gets a text from his mom saying that they are walking up. He unlocks the door and only waits for a few moments as it opens, revealing Jolene as she peeked her head in.
"Wow… you made this apartment look nice! Bonne chose aussi!"
She opens the door a little wider to reveal who else is here: two Caucasian women, smiling as they make themselves inside. One of them is a tall woman with brown ponytailed hair, a purple shirt, light blue jeans, and shoes. The other is who Adwin actually noticed a little quicker: a tall teenage girl with light brown hair held by a pink hairband, a two-shaded pink top, blue short jeans, and pink heels, smiling widely as she walks in. The two mothers had already greeted each other back at the airport, so now the teenage girl just has to talk to the painter…
"Oh, Adwin, this is Emma and her daughter Trixie. And girls, this is Adwin." She moves her hands between the two to try and get a conversation going, which Trixie does.
"Hi," she exclaims, making a wide smile at him. "My name's Trixie but you can call me Trix! So great to meet you, Adwin! Mama's told me about you and she said you're a painter. That's, like, so cool! I've never really been an artist myself unless fashion counts of course but Nashville always did look so fun with all the music and the art and the clothes and…"
Her very fast-talking did leave Adwin a little nervous, backing away a little slowly. This didn't go unnoticed by her.
"OMG, sorry! I always get so… you know… when meeting someone and-"
"Hey, it's okay," says Adwin, interrupting her but attempting to be polite. Not that he didn't like her, just that the talking kinda got him off-guard. "Just didn't expect a whole lotta words there…" His voice gets a little softer as he speaks, feeling a little shy.
"Ohhhh, you must be like the shy type! Like the kid who mysteriously lets himself be by himself cause…" She sees Adwin looking a little down and assumes she said something wrong. "Ugh, I did it again!" She puts her head on her hands, feeling embarrassed. This is not going too well…
"Hey, it's okay! Really, I just… well, what you said." He wanted to comfort her but felt as though he shouldn't. He didn't want to make a mad impression on her or her mother, who tries to reassure Trixie that she'll be fine.
"Hey," said Emma, "don't worry. He says you're fine, that's something to feel proud about right? How about you get your stuff unpacked? Oh, Jolene? Where's the guest room?"
"Oh, so the guest room is down the hall, first door on the left." Jolene points to where the room is.
"Come on, Trixie, why don't we see your room? Oh, Adwin? You wanna help with the rest of the bags? They're just outside on the trolley."
Adwin, being a nice guy, walks outside to help bring the rest of the bags in.
"Oh, be sure to put them in the guest room!"
After bringing the last bag in, Adwin opted to return the cart. When he got back, he sees Emma and Jolene still talking, with the latter greeting him.
"Hey, bud. Everything went okay?"
"Oui. The trolley is back." He doesn't know what to say next… so Emma does it for him.
"So how do you like Trixie? She's a perky one ain't she?"
"Well… she's definitely… that." He rubs his head, still remembering how overwhelmed he felt when she first talked on and on. "She… seems nice, I guess?"
"She'll grow on you. I promise! Hey, why don't you go see how she's doing? Her room should be coming along by now." Emma points to the guest room where Trixie is staying at, feeling maybe they could break some more ice if they talked to each other for a bit. Knowing he probably doesn't have any other choice, he cautiously heads to the door and knocks on it a few times.
"Come in!" A perky voice answers after a while, giving him permission to enter… and Adwin is greeted to a whole lot of pink. And clothes. And, surprisingly, little pieces of technology lying around.
"Oh… well, it's definitely… pink."
"Well duh! It's, like, my favorite color! But you probably know about the different shades cause you're an artist right? Eh, eh?" She nudges him in the air, to which he instinctively answers with…
"Oh yeah. You seem to have a lot of lavender and rose pink here. Like what you're wearing, what's in the room, lots of things. But lavender and rose pink, those feel like your favorites considering how much of it is decorated in here." He stops right as he eyes the wall lights Trixie put up, realizing that he may have gotten too into the color. "S-sorry, I didn't mean to…"
She only giggles cutely at his apology.
"Sorry? Why sorry? I think it's awesome that you know so much! Heck, even I probably don't go that deep compared to you." Trixie's genuine compliment makes Adwin feel just slightly flustered as he instinctively rubs his hands together.
"Oh. It's just years of learning how, you know, stuff… works." His words slow down slightly as Trixie walks over to him.
"Well, whatever you learned, you clearly have a passion for it! Keep at it!"
"...Thanks. Sorry for being so quiet earlier." He scratches his head, his dialogue feeling less quiet. He doesn't know what it is, but she feels like someone comfortable to talk to… even with how fast she does.
"Oh, no prob! I'm sorry for being so talky talky!"
"Ditto. I mean, I'd probably have to get used to it but it's, you know, you."
They both awkwardly stand around for a few brief moments before Adwin pulls his hand up, curled into a ball.
"Fistbump?"
"Sure!"
Trixie would pull her own hand up the same way, letting the two pound their fists together. Ah yes, a common but much less awkward way to indicate that they are (somewhat) friends. Trixie suddenly snaps her fingers, getting an idea.
"Oooooh, you know what we should do? We should, like, totally watch a movie! Anyone you'd like! Just not scary types though."
"Oh, definitely not. Those make me too queasy." Adwin clenches his stomach, remembering the last time he attempted to watch a scary movie. "Maybe we could watch something, well, calmer? There's probably something on Streamix." He gives off a slight shrug, not really knowing what they could watch yet. He doesn't feel shy when it comes to movies surprisingly, since those are one of his other interests, so at least there wouldn't be any more awkwardness about it.
"Ooooh, you have Streampix! That's one of my favorites! But I really love Disney+ cause of all the princess movies they have!" Trixie plays with her hair, reminiscing about the movies and shows she watches on there. She hopes Adwin's cool with it.
"Wait, you have it too? That's my favorite! I just love watching stuff on there!" He blushes and clasps his hands together before realizing how excited he was getting and calming down a bit. "...Yeah, we could find somethin' on there… probably."
His attempts to act cool and not so emotional about it made the girl giggle, putting a hand above her mouth. She finds it kinda cute.
"Well, Adwin, why don't we go and see?" She excitedly walks out of the room to head to the living room, leaving Adwin standing there for a second. He shakes his head after looking slightly dazed and follows after to watch a movie with her. He could tell this is probably going to be an interesting summer…
Notes: I'm finally back on writing! So it took me quite a lot of time to get back on this due to college stuff and being my first semester where my major actually gets kinda difficult. But with it coming to a close, I can proudly say that, after some personal issues to work out, I can finally start trying to get back on fanfictions, though I don't think I'm ready to continue #SuperLife just yet. With the permission of a good Instagram friend of mine, I decided to start small with a more simple story in the Total Drama dimension (though James and Dawn will NOT be major focuses here) with a new OC that I decided to give a good refresh: Adwin Dubois. I'll post more about his character later. Also introduced is Liana's OC, Trixie, who already seems like a living bubble of joy, don't you think? She's also a character in Liana's comic called Total Drama Outcasts (find it on Deviantart; it's really good!), so I've known her for a good while. Hopefully, when I get into this I can also get to updating my other non-dimension-spawning stories, like Courage of Harmony, so stay tuned for that!
Well as always, leave a review! Never hurts to help! (Feels good to type that again...)
