Chapter 5: The Code

(Intro)

At Cyclonia, Master Cyclonis approached Dark Ace's room to check on her top general. She entered the room, but to her surprise, Dark Ace was gone.

Meanwhile, Aerrow, Aria, Piper, Skyla, Radarr and Mimi were sneaking into a Phoenix nest. Radarr got a bit freaked after touching a skull. As the group continued sneaking deeper into the nest, Piper and Skyla got startled by a cracking sound. They turned to see that Radarr had stepped on a bone. "Oops. Sorry." Radarr whispered. "Radarr, quiet!" Piper whispered. "Seriously. You should've stayed on the ship." Skyla whispered. "I said I was sorry." Radarr whispered. "Piper, Skyla, why are we whispering?" Aerrow asked. "Aerrow, we're in a Phoenix nest. You and Aria know what a Phoenix is, right?" Piper asked. "Sure. It's a birdie." Aerrow whispered, making Aria giggle. "It's more than just a bird! It's a very big bird." Piper whispered. "Yeah. And it's usually on fire!" Skyla added. "Well, it's also not here." Aerrow said, eyeing a nesting place where a rare Phoenix Crystal was placed. "Which means score one fire blasting Phoenix Crystal for the Storm Hawks!" He cheered.

Aria felt unsure about this. She studied Phoenixes back during the Sky Knight Trials. About how they're linked with their crystals. Ever since then, she's been fascinated and obsessed with them. Aerrow carefully picked up the crystal. "The Phoenix and the crystal are linked. So, we need to be careful and try not to alert the Phoenix." Piper said. "I don't know if this is a good idea. Maybe we should just leave it." Aria said. "What? After going through all this trouble? What's eating you, Aria?" Aerrow asked. "I just feel bad about taking something from a Phoenix. You guys know how I feel about Phoenixes." Aria explained. "I know, Aria. But if we're going against the Cyclonians, we need every crystal we can get." Skyla said. Aria still felt unsure.

But just then, the crystal was snatched from Aerrow's hand by a grappler and pulled into someone's hand. It was a man with messy green hair and nasty wicked smile, cackling like a madman. "Joker!" Aerrow exclaimed, recognizing the man as one of Master Cyclonis' new generals. "Storm Hawks. So nice to steal from you again. You misplace my number?" Joker asked jokingly. "Hey, Smiley." Radarr called from below. Joker looked down to see Radarr just as he bit his leg. Joker yelped in pain, tossing the crystal away. Aerrow leapt out and caught the crystal. Unfortunately, the crystal started to glow and gave off a loud screech. Then an aura came out and formed into a Phoenix symbol. "Uh oh." Aria whimpered, knowing what was coming. Then a louder screech was heard, making everyone cringe. Aria, Piper and Skyla slowly turned around and Aerrow slowly got up. And then, down from a ceiling tunnel, came a blazing hot Phoenix. "I knew this was a bad idea." Aria whimpered.

The Phoenix landed and looked directly at Aerrow, angry that he had its crystal. "You know what? Maybe you should have this." Aerrow said, tossing the crystal to Joker and making the Phoenix turn to him. "Actually, I'm a generous man. You had it first. So, you keep it." Joker said, tossing the crystal to the girls. "Hey! Don't give it to us!" Piper exclaimed. The Phoenix screeched as the girls screamed. And everyone ran for their skimmers as the Phoenix chased them, nipping at Piper. "Coming through!" Skyla cried as she, Piper and Aria zipped past Aerrow. Piper tossed the crystal back to Aerrow as she, Aria, with Mimi on her shoulders, Skyla, Radarr and Joker made it to the exit. The Phoenix prepared to attack, but Aerrow made it to the exit. The Phoenix screeched in anger as it missed.

They exited the nest, but the Phoenix burst through the entrance. Joker smiled as he got on his skimmer and took off over the edge. "I'll collect the crystal from your charred remains. Just don't forget to cool off first." Joker said, cackling as he popped his skimmer's wings and flew off.

The Storm Hawks made it to their skimmers, but the Phoenix was too close. Suddenly, a jet of water was fired at the Phoenix, cooling it off and creating a cloud of steam. The Storm Hawks looked up to see Sky coming in on his skimmer. "Now's your chance! Let's go!" He yelled. The Storm Hawks drove off the edge with Sky following. But the Phoenix quickly recovered and dove right after them. They continued diving until Piper saw a lake at the bottom. "Whatever you do, don't pull up!" She yelled. "What did you say?!" Aria asked. "Don't pull up?! I like it!" Aerrow exclaimed. "I don't like it!" Radarr screamed. "Woo-hoo!" Aerrow cheered as they dove into the water. The Phoenix pulled up and flew away, not wanting to get anymore wet.

The Storm Hawks leapt their skimmers out of the lake and crashed on the mainland. "That was *cough, cough* pretty cool." Aerrow said. "I beg to differ." Aria groaned, rubbing her head. "Oh! That was close." Sky said, seeing that he was next to a dung pile. Radarr groaned as he pulled himself out of the hole in the ground where he landed. "Where's the crystal?" He asked. But then he caught the sight of it. "Never mind. I got it." He leapt out and walked towards it. But then he stopped just as someone else picked it up. A rather rich-looking Sky Knight. A male with blonde hair tied into a ponytail with expensive looking battle armor. "Do you see this? It is exactly what we need." The man said, showing the crystal to his squadron just as Aerrow, Sky and the girls walked up. "Uh, hello?" Aerrow said. "Allow me to guess. From your un-kept appearances and pulling Sky Rides, you must be the children now calling themselves the Storm Hawks." The man said. "What was that about my appearance?" Aria asked, feeling her buttons pushed.

"Who are these guys?" Aerrow asked. "The Rex Guardians!" Piper said. "Very good. I am Harrier, Sky Knight and leader of the Rex Guardians." Harrier said with a bow. Piper, flustered by Harrier's charms, bowed back. "Stop that!" Aria and Skyla exclaimed, making Piper straighten up. "Well, if you're really a Sky Knight, you'll give back our crystal." Aerrow said. "Yeah, we almost got burnt to a crisp for it." Aria said. "Then it's clearly much too dangerous to be kept by children. It will be taken to Terra Rex." Harrier said. "What'd you say?" Aria asked, now getting angry and raising her fist. "Hold on! That's not fair!" Aerrow exclaimed. "Yeah! We had dibs on that crystal first!" Sky shouted. Harrier and Rex Guardians raised their Energy Swords, ready for a fight. But then, Finn, Junko, Riggorix and Skyler rode out of the jungle to back up their friends. "These guys giving you trouble?" Junko asked as Finn took aim at them. "Oh, I sure hope so. I like trouble." Riggorix said, licking his chops as he drew one of his scythes. "Wait! We're all on the same side here. We shouldn't be fighting each other." Piper said. "This is not up for debate, Piper!" Aria snapped. "Yeah, Piper, they snatched our crystal and called us children." Aerrow said. "Low blow." Finn said. "You said it." Skyla said.

"The Code is quite clear. The crystal is ours. If you have a problem with that, you could always issue a challenge." Harrier dared. "Code? What Code?" Aerrow asked. That made Harrier snicker. "Wha-What Code?" He chuckled, making his squad laugh. But then he noticed the serious look on Aerrow and Aria's faces. "They're serious." He mumbled. "Okay. Fine! I challenge you for the Phoenix Crystal!" Aerrow challenged. "It shall be so. Follow us back to our terra. Tonight, you shall be honored guests." Harrier said. That made Piper smile. "Tomorrow, we'll see just what kind of squadron you really are." Harrier said as he mounted his skimmer and drove off with his squadron. "Now can someone tell us what this Code is?" Aerrow asked.

Back on the Condor, Piper set down her Storm Hawks journal and looked through the pages until she found the right one. "The very first Sky Knight was a Rex Guardian. And the Code is their ancient set of rules and rituals. No one's changed a word in like 500 years." Piper read. "Big surprise." Sky muttered sarcastically, making Skyla laugh. Aria didn't like this. "They seem a little…uptight." Stork said. "What makes you say that?" Riggorix asked. Stork gestured to the window. Riggorix looked outside it to see the Rex Guardians flying their skimmers in formation as they arrived at Terra Rex. "You're right. They're really uptight." Riggorix said. "We could probably learn a lot from them. They have class, discipline, well-maintained gear." Piper said, gesturing to Radarr picking his nose and sharing it with Mimi, and Junko leaning against a pipe, only for it to break, causing him to fall. Riggorix laughed at that before helping him up. "Why learn from them at all? We're fine with who we are. We don't need to learn from a bunch of snobs and a 500-year-old law." Aria said. "But-" Piper tried to say. "Piper, are you seriously gonna learn to be like one of them rather than just being who you are?!" Aria asked. "Yeah. And besides all that, what do these guys have that we don't?" Aerrow asked. "How about a landing strip full of screaming fans?" Finn said. "Oh, come on. What're the odds of that?" Skyla asked with a scoff.

The Rex Guardians made their landing in a giant arena loaded with screaming fans. Upon arrival, Harrier took the liberty of signing autographs. "Wow! I mean, wow!" Aerrow said. "Yeah." Piper said, love-struck. "Well, that's the last time I open my mouth with doubt." Skyla said. Aria just scoffed as Harrier signed an action figure of himself. "They got action figures. Why don't we have action figures?" Finn asked. "Why would we? I don't look good as a cheap PVC toy." Aria said. Piper was deadpanned by them, but re-sprouted her smile when Harrier walked up. "This way. I hope you're hungry." Harrier said. Piper smiled flustered again. Aria just shook her head with a glare, not liking how her brother's crush and friend was being mesmerized by Harrier.

Later that night, the Rex Guardians were already present and ready for dinner. Just then, there was a cluttering crash. "The Storm Hawks." The guard presented as the Storm Hawks entered. Finn, Junko, Riggorix, Sky, and Radarr ran right for the table. "You guys!" Piper groaned. As the Storm Hawks sat down, the Rex Guardians were stunned by their display. "Glad to see you've dressed up for the occasion." Harrier said. "Let the feast begin!" He clapped his hands and the chef and waiter entered. As Finn balanced a spoon on his nose, the waiter placed a bowl of soup in front of him. Finn then began to slurp the whole thing down. "Uh, Finn? Wouldn't you like to use a spoon?" Piper asked. "Which one?" Finn asked, looking confusedly at the silverware. Piper sheepishly smiled while Harrier scoffed. Stork sniffed his soup before pushing it away with disgust and reluctance. Riggorix ate his soup savagely, earning a disgusted look from the Rex Guardian in front of him. "What?" He asked. Junko took a small spoonful from the small bowl and tasted it. "Mmm. Lemony." He said. "It's for your fingers." The waiter said. "Oh." Junko said before dipping his fingers in the bowl and sucking them clean. Radarr and Mimi lunged for the turkey in the middle. They struggled to pull the leg off. And when they did, they crashed across the table. But they were okay. Radarr ate the whole leg, left the scraps for Mimi and guzzled down his drink, making him burp. "Mmm! My compliments to the chef." He said. "You said it, buddy." Mimi agreed. The Rex Guardians, shocked by this, screamed like…little girls. "Yeah. Radarr and Mimi are a handful sometimes, but what're you gonna do?" Aerrow asked. "Die of embarrassment?" Piper mumbled, face-palming herself. Aria heard what she said and grumbled.

The next day, the Storm Hawks rode their skimmers on their way to the arena. Piper was extremely cranky after what happened at the dinner. "Okay. So, dinner last night didn't go so well." Aerrow said. "Didn't go so well? Try complete and total disaster! And that poor squire!" Piper exclaimed. "What? I thought he was choking!" Junko protested. That made Aerrow chuckle. "That's not the point! You guys completely embarrassed me in front of Harrier!" Piper exclaimed. Aria growled, having had enough. She pulled up in front of her squadron and stopped right in front of them. The team quickly skidded to a stop. "Hey! What's the idea?!" Finn shouted. Aria glared at him with ferocity. "I'm…gonna be quiet." Finn said, shrinking down. "Okay, what is going on with you, Piper?! Ever since we met those snobby Rex Guardians, you've been acting like a love-struck idiot!" Aria exclaimed. "Aria, calm down." Skyler said. "Are you seriously considering trying to change who we are?! Isn't who we are right now enough for you anymore?!" Aria asked angrily. Piper tried to say something, but she couldn't think of anything to say. Skyler dismounted his skimmer and hustled over to Aria, who now panted heavily from her outburst. "It's okay. Breathe. Just breathe." He said, patting her back. "Forget it for now, sis. What matters now is winning this challenge." Aerrow said. "You're right, Aerrow. Guess I'm letting a lot get to me." Aria sighed. "I know. We can sort it out later. Come on. We're almost at the arena." Aerrow said.

The Storm Hawks continued on as they rode into the entrance of the arena. "Just because they got fans and shiny armor and fancy rides doesn't mean they're any better than us." Aerrow spoke too soon on that. When they entered the arena, they saw that the entire terra was packed in every single bleacher, cheering for the Rex Guardians as they waved. The Storm Hawks, except Aerrow, were all stunned by this. "We're so gonna lose." Finn said. Aria glared at the Rex Guardians. She couldn't wait to put them in their place.

The Storm Hawks and the Rex Guardians stood on opposite sides while the Phoenix Crystal rested on a trophy stand. 3 elders stepped up to a podium. "Sky Knights, prepare your squadrons for the first event!" The lead elder announced. The first of the Rex Guardians, Langston Fieber, waved in from the skies on his skimmer. "The first even demonstrates grace and control. It is the noble art of sky writing." The elder announced. "Lame." Finn said. Aria elbowed him in the groin. "But it is." Finn wheezed in pain. Aria just shoved him to the ground head-first. Little did they know, someone was watching from the audience. He was hooded so his face wouldn't be seen for the moment.

Langston demonstrated a great form of grace and control, creating the swan symbol of the Rex Guardians. "The Rex Guardians earn the full 10 points. Well done." The elder said. As the crowd cheered, Aerrow and Aria huddled the Storm Hawks around Finn. "Okay, guys. Here's what's gonna go down." Aerrow said. "No, Aerrow. I'll take charge of this one." Aria said. "But Aria-" Aerrow tried to say. "Please, Aerrow. If we want to win that crystal and put these snobs in their place, you have to trust me on this." Aria said. Aerrow felt unsure. "Let's at least give it a try." Skyler said. The others looked at Aerrow and nodded. "Alright. Give us the low down, Aria." Aerrow said. "Right. Here's what we're gonna do." Aria said as she explained the plan.

After the explanation, Finn got ready on his skimmer. "Remember, Finn, if we want to win that crystal, none of your cheap defacing. Got it?" Aria said. "Got it. Good old Finn will make the Storm Hawks proud." Finn said with a wink. "Then go get 'em, Hot Shot." Aria said, smacking his skimmer's rear as Finn took off into the sky. Displaying unique forms of grace and control, along with using different colored smoke, Finn wrote in the sky, the Storm Hawks' mark. It was also quite bigger than the swan Langston made. And as an extra finale, Finn tossed up a handful of Rainbow Smoke Crystals, creating an incredible fireworks display around his symbol. The crowd cheered as Finn landed. Even the elders were impressed. "On a scale of 1-to-10, I think that's an awesome." Finn said. "Awesome, indeed. The Storm Hawks also earn the full 10 points. Also, an additional 10 points for the colorful display." The elder declared. Harrier was shocked to hear that. The Storm Hawks cheered. "Oh yeah." Finn said with a wink.

"A pilot is only as good as their ride. He or she must know it inside and out." The elder announced. Stork and the next Rex Guardian, Limen, stood in front of a pile of skimmer parts. "The first competitor to assemble a working ride from these spare parts will receive 20 points." The elder announced. Before beginning, Stork sprayed something onto his hands. Limen just snapped his fingers and a bunch of servants began building with the parts. But just then, there was an engine roar. Stork had already completed his vehicle. "This may look like a normal converter, but it's also a sonic scrambler." Stork explained, revving the engine. "Storm Hawk Stork clearly assembled the vehicle in the faster time." The elder said. "Yes!" Aria cheered silently. "I even sterilized my hands before we even started." Stork said, using the same spray on his hands again. "Wait for it." Finn muttered. "Objection! That 'vehicle' is completely unauthorized!" Harrier exclaimed. Piper was surprised by this. The elders muttered amongst themselves before turning back. "Though you are correct, he did finish the vehicle first and sterilized his hands before and after the job. 20 points to the Storm Hawks." The elder declared. The Storm Hawks cheered.

"Muscle is one of the many keys to a supportive squadron. And with muscle comes great power." The elder announced. Junko and the next Rex Guardian, Amos, stood at attention. "The first strongman to tame our savage Volcanosaur wins 20 points." The elder announced. A cage door at the end of the arena opened up and out of it came a Volcanosaur. A coal black T-Rex creature with volcano spines on its back, spewing hot lava. It looked at Junko and Amos, and gave a loud roar, spewing goblets of lava. The Storm Hawks were surprised to see such a beast. "Such a remarkable beast, isn't it? We only pick the best one from the herds near our terra's volcano lands for this event." Harrier said. Aria glared at the snob as she clutched her fists. But Aerrow held up his hand. "Not yet." He said. Aria calmed down and lowered her fists.

Amos armed himself with Golden Gauntlets and charged towards the Volcanosaur. The Volcanosaur roared as it charged back. Amos gave a great big punch to the Volcanosaur's head, making it howl in pain. The Storm Hawks could not believe such cruelty. "Now yield to me, beast!" Amos ordered. But the Volcanosaur just glared and growled at the Rex Guardian. "I said yield, you brainless creature!" Amos ordered more angrily. The Volcanosaur just grabbed him in its mouth and tossed him into the wall. "You beast! You are supposed to yield to me! That is how a brainless monster is supposed to act!" Amos shouted. Just then, the crowd started booing at Amos for such cruelty. Harrier was confused by all this sudden booing. The Volcanosaur now turned its attention to Junko. Then it charged towards him, roaring with an appetite. "JUNKO!" The Storm Hawks cried. But Junko stood his ground, closed his eyes and raised his right hand. Everyone closed their eyes to avoid seeing Junko's gruesome demise. But for some reason, they didn't hear anything like chewing jaws or stomping feet. Everyone looked to see Junko and the Volcanosaur just inches from each other. Junko gently placed his hand on the Volcanosaur's snout and the Volcanosaur closed its eyes and purred at the Wallop's soothing touch. "I don't believe it. Storm Hawk Junko has tamed the Volcanosaur. 20 more points to the Storm Hawks, giving them a 60-point lead." The elder declared. The crowd cheered. Now Harrier was even more shocked. "I…I don't understand. The Storm Hawks are making a mockery of the Code. Why do our people cheer?" He asked. "Hey, at least we're putting on a good show." Junko said as the Volcanosaur nuzzled him.

"The next event, the traditional fighting technique of Sky Fu." The elder announced. Piper and the female Rex Guardian, Ella, took position on separate platforms. "Begin!" Piper and Ella bowed and started fighting with the style of Sky Fu. The Storm Hawks were impressed. "Where'd she learn that?" Finn asked. "She and I took lessons when we were young. We know every move, every style, every play-by-play." Aria explained. Piper and Ella then faced each other. Then they ran towards each other and started walking into the air against each other's feet. (AN: That's actually kinda freaky!) Then they back-flipped and landed gracefully back on their platforms. Piper gave Ella a wink as the crowd cheered for her. "Each of you performed to perfection. This event is a draw." The elder said. As Ella waved to the people, Piper noticed something about the class badge on Ella's jacket. "Wait a minute!" She called, getting the elder's attention. "According to Lysander's wardrobe decree, section 4, jacket class must be gold in color. Hers are silver." Piper pointed out. The elder looked at saw this. "It appears that Storm Hawk Piper is correct. Rex Guardian Ella is disqualified." He declared. "WHAT?! But that's…that's-" Harrier tried to say. "A taste of your own medicine." Piper said. The Storm Hawks cheered. Even the hooded man applauded in the crowd.

"Now a Sky Knight can only be as good as his weapon of choice. For our next event, the weapons expert shall demonstrate usage of his weapon." The elder announced. Riggorix and the next Rex Guardian, Cate, stood in front of 2 large catapults holding 2 large piles of fruit. "Rex Guardian Cate, you are first." The elder announced. Cate stepped forth and raised her Energy Sword. Her catapult fired the fruit towards her. Then she leapt up and spun like a tornado, slicing up every piece of fruit that came at her. "Excellent performance." The elder announced. "Beat that, Warpath." Cate said smugly as she walked away. Riggorix just chuckled. As he stepped forth, he took out a blindfold and wrapped it over his good eye. Everyone was surprised by this action. Riggorix then drew his Energy Scythes and prepared for the fruit assault. The catapult fired the fruit towards the blind Warpath. Riggorix started to breathe slowly. 'Inner peace.' He thought as he started moving, slicing up every single piece of fruit that came at him like he knew they were coming. Everyone watched as the fruit he sliced ended up in a bowl on a table behind him. "Fruit salad anyone?" Riggorix asked as he took off his blindfold. The crowd cheered. "A perfect performance, Storm Hawk Riggorix. 20 points to the Storm Hawks. Plus 10 more for the blindfold." The elder announced.

"Teamwork and cooperation are key in a Sky Knight squadron." The elder announced. "For our next event will be a 3-team event. The Storm Hawks' Stormheart Triplets against the Rex Guardians' Rexy Triplets." The Rexy Trips looked exactly identical, glaring daggers at the Stormhearts. "Your challenge is simple. Build a 3-person tower through teamwork and cooperation." The elder announced. "Begin!" The Rexy Trips began stacking themselves onto each other. Unfortunately, they really lacked teamwork and cooperation with each other. "OW! Watch the face with those big feet!" "Get your hand out of my hair!" "You're getting caught on my uniform!" They shouted at each other. But the Stormhearts were prepared. "You guys ready?" Skyler asked. "I was born ready." Skyla said. "As was I." Sky said. "Then let's do this." Skyler said. He knelt down as Skyla climbed onto her brother's back. "You good, bro?" Skyla asked. "I'm okay. I trust you guys." Skyler said. "Okay. Your turn, Sky." Skyla said. "Coming right up, sis." Sky said. He started carefully climbing up his siblings. As the Rexy Trips tried hopelessly to get their act together, Sky carefully placed his legs over Skyla's shoulders. Skyler mustered all his strength and stood up with his siblings on his shoulders. The crowd and Storm Hawks cheered. "Most excellent performance of teamwork and cooperation between siblings. 20 points for the Storm Hawks." The elder announced. Now Harrier was getting frustrated that his squadron was being upstaged by children. "Now, for the last event, the Sky Knight duel." The elder announced. "Objection! These Storm Hawks have 2 Sky Knights! That gives them an unfair advantage!" Harrier exclaimed. The elders murmured to each other before turning back. "It is acceptable. It may be 2 against 1, but it will make the event more interesting." The elder declared. Harrier was now getting more frustrated at this.

Aerrow and Aria mounted their skimmers as they prepared for the duel. "We've pretty much won every event. That means we can win the challenge." Piper said. "She's right. One more win and the Phoenix Crystal is ours." Skyla said. "Right. With 120 points ahead of the Rex Guardians, all you have to do is win before this runs out." Stork said, holding up an hourglass. "Right. We can do this. No pressure." Aerrow said. "Against Mr. 'By the Code' over there, it'll be a piece of cake." Aria said. Harrier readied his Energy Lance. "Go get him, guys." Piper said. Aerrow and Aria revved up their skimmers and took off into the skies with Harrier following.

Once in the skies, Aerrow and Aria flew towards Harrier, armed with Energy Lances themselves. But then they tossed them away. "What are they doing?!" Harrier asked. As both sides flew closer to each other, Harrier fired a blast from his lance, but Aerrow and Aria barrel rolled to dodge the blast. Then they flew directly over Harrier. Then they landed on the wings on each side of Harrier, weapons ready. Harrier tossed his lance, drew his sword and began to fight Aerrow and Aria, clashing his sword with Aerrow's blades and Aria's staff. Back on the ground, the Storm Hawks looked between the duel and Stork's hour glass. Time was running out for Aerrow and Aria. As they continued to fight, Harrier accidently struck his skimmer's engine, causing the skimmer to sputter and fall out of the sky. The Storm Hawks and the crowd were worried. As the skimmer fell, Aerrow and Aria nodded to each other and shoved Harrier off the skimmer. They opened their gliders and glided down to the ground with Harrier screaming for his life. Once they were at the ground, the 3 tumbled into the dirt, creating a dust cloud. Once the cloud cleared, Harrier saw Aerrow and Aria standing over him, weapons ready. "Well?" Aria asked. "I…I yield." Harrier said regrettably. And just in time. Stork's hourglass had just dropped its last grain of sand. "They did it!" "We win!" "Alright!" The Storm Hawks cheered. "Nice job, sis." Aerrow said. "You too, bro." Aria said as they hugged.

"That was the most flagrant disrespect for the Code I have ever seen!" Harrier exclaimed as he stood up and marched to the elders. "They abandoned their rides! And they're not even wearing regulation dueling armor!" "Since when has any of that mattered to a Storm Hawk?" Aria asked with a scoff. The elders murmured amongst themselves while Harrier glared at Aerrow and Aria. "We agree…with Aria of the Storm Hawks." The lead elder announced. "WHAT?!" Harrier asked in shock. "Aerrow and Aria won the duel with the precise skill and courage any Sky Knight should ever need. The Storm Hawks win and the Phoenix Crystal is theirs." The elder declared. As Aerrow and Aria took the Phoenix Crystal from the trophy stand, the other Storm Hawks ran up to them and congratulated them with a group hug. Even the crowd cheered for them. "Well done, Storm Hawks. Well done, indeed." The hooded man said as he applauded with the crowd. Even the other Rex Guardians applauded them.

"STOP IT! STOP CHEERING FOR THEM, YOU MINDLESS SYCOPHANTS!" Harrier shouted in frustration. "I AM YOUR SKY KNIGHT! I AM YOUR PROTECTOR!" The Storm Hawks were now confused by this sudden outburst. "I am the one who's guaranteed your safety for generations to come!" "What's he talking about?" Aerrow asked. "Don't know. But I have a bad feeling about this." Aria said. "Oh, Mr. Joker!" Harrier called. Just then, a familiar skimmer drove into the arena and skidded to a stop, creating a dust cloud. As the cloud cleared, the Joker himself was approaching. Harrier snatched the crystal from Aerrow and presented it to Joker. "Please accept this crystal to affirm our peace with Master Cyclonis." He offered. "Don't mind if I do." Joker said, taking the crystal and cackling loudly. Everyone was shocked by this.

"I thought there was something deficient about you." Aria said. "You made a deal with the Joker?! Are you out of your mind?!" Aerrow exclaimed. "I know exactly what I'm doing! I am ensuring that the Cyclonians will never threaten Terra Rex!" Harrier exclaimed. "That's Joker! He doesn't do deals!" Piper exclaimed. Joker maintained his trademark smile. "He gave his word! He's honor bound!" Harrier said. "Oh, I'm sorry to say this, Harrier old boy, but honor is so overrated." Joker said. Harrier was confused by this. "My Cyclonian invasion force is preparing as we speak." Joker revealed. Harrier was shocked by this as Joker punched him, knocking him down. "Oh, and thanks for the rock, Storm Hawks." He said as he mounted his skimmer. Aerrow and Aria glared as he took off into the sky.

The Storm Hawks took off for their skimmers. "Come on, guys! We gotta stop him!" Aerrow said. "Yeah, no kidding!" Aria said. But just then, 2 guards blocked them from their rides. "Are you kidding me right now?!" Aria asked in anger. "Oh, come on! He's getting away!" Aerrow exclaimed. "This is our battle." Harrier said as he mounted his repaired skimmer. "You don't know who you're dealing with." Piper said. "That's right." Aria said. "QUIET! You're about to see how a real Sky Knight does battle." Harrier said. "Harrier! It is clear that the Storm Hawks have had more experience with this Joker. If you do this, it will surely cost you." The elder said. "As if you actually care when the Storm Hawks showed complete mockery of the Code." Harrier said. The elders glared at him. "Rex Guardians, mount up!" Harrier called. But the Rex Guardians just stood their ground, glaring at their leader with disappointment. "What are you doing?! Mount up!" Harrier ordered. "You've disgraced us, Harrier. You don't deserve to call yourself our leader." Ella said. Harrier glared before he revved up his skimmer and took off after Joker. "That guy is gonna get smacked down so hard." Finn said. Junko and Riggorix nodded in agreement. The hooded man stood up from his seat and took off.

As Joker flew off, a blast was shot from behind him. He turned to see Harrier flying after him. "Oh, poor decision, Harrier." He said, turning his skimmer around to face the lone Rex Guardian. "Oh! I see your team hasn't joined you. Can't say I blame them." He joked, tossing one of his Energy Cards at Harrier. But Harrier blocked it with his sword as Joker flew past him. "Where did you find that ride? In a museum?" Joker asked with a joke. "I vow to fight with honor!" Harrier shouted. Joker continued to toss his cards at Harrier. And Harrier continued to block each card with his sword. "Huh. Formidable opponent. I guess I'm gonna have to turn up the heat." Joker said, holding up the Phoenix Crystal.

Back in the arena, everyone watched the duel. Riggorix saw through his binoculars what Joker was about to do. "Oh no. He's going to use the Phoenix Crystal!" He exclaimed. "If he uses it, the Phoenix we stole it from will be drawn to it!" Aria exclaimed. "Well, we're actually relieved we didn't win the crystal." Cate said. "I almost feel sorry for Harrier." Finn said. "You gotta let us get up there!" Piper said. "Come on! Joker would've taken down 4 of the Rex Guardians without breaking a sweat." Aerrow said. "He's right." Langston said. "You think he's gonna have trouble taking down Harrier with the power of the Phoenix Crystal?" Aerrow asked. The 2 guards looked at each other. "Very well. Get up there and help him, Storm Hawks." The left guard said.

Aerrow nodded and took off his scarf, unveiling the Heart of Atmos. "What's that?" Amos asked. "A little secret weapon of ours. Skylight Unite!" Aerrow shouted. Then a bright light blinded the Rex Guardians for a moment as the Storm Hawks transformed into the Skylight Guardians. "Whoa!" Ella exclaimed as she and the Rex Guardians were surprised by this.

Meanwhile, Harrier continued to duel Joker. "Those who fight with honor will always prevail!" Harrier exclaimed. "Times have changed, my dear boy." Joker said, holding up the Phoenix Crystal. Harrier gasped as Joker drew the same blade as Dark Ace's and inserted the Phoenix Crystal into the socket, powering up the blade and his cards. Then Joker tossed one of his cards at Harrier's skimmer, destroying it. Harrier leapt off and popped his chute. But then Joker tossed another card at the chute, slicing the straps. "Enjoy the ride, dearie!" He called.

Harrier screamed as he fell. The crowd gasped in horror as they watched him fall to his doom. But then Aerrow flew up and caught him. The crowd cheered at this. Harrier looked up at Aerrow as the others joined him. "L-L-Lightning Strike?! Is that you?!" Harrier asked in shock, not recognizing Aerrow at the moment. "Yes and no." Aerrow said. "But how?" Harrier asked. "No time to explain. We're gonna have to put you back on the ground." Aerrow said as Joker attacked the crowd with his flaming cards. "Very well. We might require some small assistance." Harrier said. Then Radarr came up and placed a new parachute on Harrier's back. "Enjoy your flight!" He said as the chute popped, sending Harrier on his way.

The Storm Hawks prepared to engage Joker. "Here he comes!" Junko called. As Joker came in, he prepared to toss a few fire cards. "Time to cool this guy down." Sky said, taking the lead. As Joker tossed the cards, Sky blasted them with a jet of water from his hand, cooling them down. "Well, excuse me! Upstaged by the Skylight Guardians." Joker said. "You might as well give us the Phoenix Crystal right now, Joker." Aerrow said. "Oh, but why? I'm having such a good time. And there's nothing anyone can say right now that can make me give up such power." Joker said with a wicked smile. Just then, there was a loud screech. "No? Well, I think it might have something to say." Aria said. Joker turned to see the Phoenix flying towards him. "Well, well, well. Big Bird's come back for the crystal." He joked, secretly readying a card in his hand. "I'm not normally the kind of guy who likes to give. But I will give you something, birdie." Aria looked between Joker and the Phoenix, suspecting that something was wrong. "I'll give you THIS!" Joker tossed the card at the Phoenix as it got close enough, slitting its throat. The Storm Hawks gasped at this. The Phoenix fell from the sky towards the arena. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Aria cried, diving after it.

The Storm Hawks prepared to follow, but Joker tossed more cards at them, stopping them. "We're not done yet." Joker said. The Storm Hawks glared at the madman. "You're a monster!" Skyla exclaimed. "Monster? Moi? Oh no, the real monsters are the ones who protect powerful crystals such as this. And the people that will do what is needed to obtain such power." Joker explained without a single care. Aerrow just glared with pure hatred as Joker threw another card. But before Aerrow could do anything, the hooded man flew up on his own skimmer and blocked the card with his Two-handled Blade. "Help your sister save the Phoenix. I'll handle Joker and get the crystal." The hooded man said. Aerrow felt unsure. "There's no time! That Phoenix needs your help!" The hooded man exclaimed. Aerrow hesitated, but nodded. "Storm Hawks, save the Phoenix!" He called, diving after Aria and the Phoenix. The Storm Hawks followed.

"Well, well, well, a new player. Welcome to the party. Too bad you weren't invited!" Joker said as he drew his blade and unleashed a wave of fire. The hooded man slashed through the wave, but his hood was burned off, revealing his face. Aerrow turned his head and saw the man's face. "Dark Ace?!" He asked in shock. "Dark Ace?!" Joker asked in shock. He looks exactly like the Dark Ace, but his hair was bright blue and his eyes are cerulean. "I don't know what your game is, Dark Ace, but Master Cyclonis will not be pleased." Joker said. 'Dark Ace' just readied his blade and engaged Joker in a duel.

Meanwhile, Aria dove as fast as she could to save the Phoenix. "Please! Faster!" She cried as she reached out to grab the Phoenix's wing. She grabbed it and tried to pull up. But it was no use. She wasn't strong enough. "Aria!" Aerrow called. Aria looked up and saw Aerrow and the Storm Hawks flying after her and the Phoenix. "Aerrow!" Aria cried. "Don't worry! I've got this!" Aerrow summoned a large tornado and caught the Phoenix. Once they reached the ground of the arena, Aerrow motioned his hands as the tornado gently placed the Phoenix on the ground. "Is it dead?" Aria asked with worry as she shed her tears. "No. That card didn't hit any fatal spot. But it's not gonna last long." Aerrow said. "But what about Joker? He's gonna get away with the crystal." Finn said. Aerrow looked up at where Joker and 'Dark Ace' were dueling with uncertainty. "I think he's got his hands full." He said.

'Dark Ace' and Joker continued to duel, clashing against each other's blades. "What's your deal?! You're siding with the Storm Hawks even after they've beaten you before?!" Joker asked. "That would be regrettable…if I was the Dark Ace." 'Dark Ace' said. Joker was confused by this. With him distracted, 'Dark Ace' saw his chance and snatched the Phoenix Crystal from Joker's blade. "NO!" Joker exclaimed. 'Dark Ace' back-flipped of his skimmer and dived towards the arena. Joker prepared to dive after him, but then he remembered that the Storm Hawks, Rex Guardians and even the Phoenix were still down there. After a minute of hesitation, he turned around and flew away. "Master Cyclonis will not be pleased." He snarled.

Meanwhile, the Storm Hawks were still gathered around the Phoenix with no idea. "What're we gonna do?! We can't let it die!" Aria cried. Just then, Aerrow got an idea. He took the Heart from around his neck and held it out to the Phoenix's wound. The Heart glowed and covered the Phoenix in a bright aura. During this, the wound on its neck was being healed. The Storm Hawks were in awe by this. As the glow died down, the Phoenix slowly woke up. The Storm Hawks stood cautiously in case the Phoenix would try to attack as it slowly stood up. It stared down at Aerrow and Aria. "You have saved my life, Skylight Guardians." The Phoenix said with a female voice. "Uh, is it talking to us?" Finn asked in surprise. "The Heart. It must've given her the ability to talk as it healed her." Aerrow said. "You are correct, young Skylight Guardian of Air. I see that Thunderay Stormheart has chosen well." The Phoenix said. "You knew our grandfather?" Skyler asked in surprise. "Yes. In fact, I knew every Skylight Guardian that came before you. I have been a good friend to them for 2500 years." The Phoenix said. "2500 years?! That can't be right." Finn said with disbelief. "Oh, but it is. You clearly know nothing about Phoenixes." The Phoenix said. "She's right. Phoenixes burst into flames when they die. And then they're reborn from the ashes." Aria explained. "Very good, young descendent of Lightning Strike." The Phoenix said. Aria smiled, until she realized the Phoenix mentioned her father's name. "You knew our father?" Aerrow asked, having heard it too. "Indeed, I have." The Phoenix said.

But before anymore could be explained, the Storm Hawks turned to see the 'Dark Ace' landing in the arena. Nobody moved. They just glared as 'Dark Ace' approached them. He stopped as he turned his attention to Aerrow. "Why did you help us?" Aerrow asked. "It was the right thing to do. I couldn't sit by and watch Joker take such a peaceful terra." 'Dark Ace' said. "But you're the Dark Ace, Cyclonis' number 1 general." Aerrow said, not trusting him. "True. But Dark Ace is not my name. My name is Spade." Spade introduced. Everyone just kept up their glares. "I know you don't trust me at the moment and I respect that. Which is why I'm giving you this." Spade said, tossing Aria the Phoenix Crystal. "You…You took it back from Joker?" Aria asked in surprise. "Yes. It rightfully belongs to you, does it not?" Spade asked. Aerrow now turned his glare into a look of confusion. "I'm afraid I have no more to explain, Storm Hawks. Not for now at least." Spade said as he walked back to his skimmer. "But I will promise this. Hopefully the next time we meet, you will count me as your ally." He then revved up his engine and rode off out of the arena.

Aria kept her gaze on the crystal. "Alright. We still got our Phoenix Crystal. Score another win for the Storm Hawks." Finn boasted. But then Aria turned to the Phoenix and held out the crystal. "This belongs to you." She said. "What?! You're giving it back?! After everything we went through to win that thing?!" Finn asked in shock. "It was never ours to win. We stole it and look what happened. She nearly died trying to get this back. To a Phoenix, their crystals are like eggs. They're connected and will do what they must to protect them." Aria explained. Aerrow smiled at his sister's honor. Even the Rex Guardians were impressed, for they've never seen such honor unlike their own. The Phoenix stared at her crystal for a moment. "It's true. We do what we must to protect our crystals. And I cannot think of anyone more deserving to have my crystal than you, Storm Hawks." She said. Aria slowly realized what the Phoenix was saying. "We can keep it?" She asked. "Yes. Think of it as a thank you gift for saving my life. Use my crystal well, descendants of Lightning Strike." The Phoenix said. "We will. We promise." Aria said. Aerrow nodded as he side-hugged his sister. "Farewell then, my friends. I hope one day we'll meet again." The Phoenix said. And then she took off into the sky as she returns to her nest.

Afterwards, Harrier walked up to Aerrow and Aria, after the Storm Hawks changed back. "I was wrong about you, Storm Hawks. And I'm sorry. For everything." Harrier said, offering his hand. Aerrow accepted it. Aria was a bit hesitant at first. But then she smiled and placed her hand on top of theirs. The crowds cheered as the Storm Hawks, Rex Guardians and even the Volcanosaur looked on. "It's not over. The Cyclonians are coming." Piper said. "And from how Joker was feeling about today, they're bringing a big army." Sky said. "We'll find a way. Assuming my elders and my team will allow me to stay as their Sky Knight after what I said." Harrier said, looking at the Rex Guardians. Ella walked up to Harrier. And after staring for a few seconds, she smiled and offered him his sword back. Harrier gratefully accepted it and Ella brought him into a hug. The Rex Guardians cheered as they joined in. "Maybe we could stick around. That is if you guys are up to learning some new moves." Aerrow offered as the Rex Guardians broke off their group hug. "Yeah. No offense, but maybe it's time to have some changes made to the Code." Aria said. "Terra Rex, and I, welcome that." Harrier said. "So would I." Finn said. Everyone turned to see him signing autographs. "This is something I could get used to." Aria face-palmed herself.

Then Harrier reached behind him and brought out an old ancient book. "This is for you. Consider it part of my apologies for my mistreatment." He said, handing the book to Aerrow. "It contains a list of powers and elements the Skylight Guardians of old used in the past. Hopefully it will help you discover new powers of your own." Aerrow opened the book and looked through a few pages. "Thank you, Harrier." He said. Harrier nodded. Just then, the sound of baby talk turned their attention to Junko and the Volcanosaur playing with each other. "Oh, you may keep her too if you'd like." Harrier offered. That surprised the Storm Hawks. "I also realized that I could never keep such a magnificent creature in a cage anymore. Especially after your Wallop friend has formed such a bond with her during the challenge." Harrier said. "Her?" Aria asked. "Yes. This Volcanosaur is a girl. We intended to catch a male. But we've learned females are more fierce for tournaments." Harrier said as he explained. Then the Volcanosaur came up and nuzzled Aerrow and Aria. "We'd be honored to take her with us." Aerrow said as he and Aria petted the Volcanosaur. "Okay. Now we better get ready." Aria said. "She's right. It won't be long until the Cyclonians start attacking." Aerrow said. "Then let's get to work." Harrier said.

Meanwhile, Joker reported back to Master Cyclonis. "I'm telling you, my lady, Dark Ace has gone insane! Well, not as insane as me. But he has betrayed us!" Joker exclaimed. "What do you mean? The Dark Ace has been unconscious this whole time." Ravess objected. Just then, there was a groan. Everyone turned to see the Dark Ace enter the throne room, holding his head. "You! Explain yourself!" Joker demanded. "What are you talking about, circus freak?" Dark Ace asked. "We were fighting over a Phoenix Crystal at Terra Rex an hour ago." Joker said. "I…I don't remember doing that." Dark Ace said. "What do you remember, Dark Ace?" Master Cyclonis asked. "I remember I was stealing the Heart of Atmos from Aerrow and then…and then…everything else is a blank." Dark Ace said. Master Cyclonis started to think. "Master?" Ravess asked. "Go rest up, Dark Ace. You'll need your full strength for when I need you." Master Cyclonis said. Dark Ace bowed to his master, then turned and left the throne room. When he was gone, Cyclonis started thinking. There was something wrong with her Dark Ace, and she was gonna find out what it was.

Wow! Wasn't that amazing?! In pursuit of a rare Phoenix Crystal with a side of a run-in with the psychopathic Joker, the Storm Hawks get into a spot of trouble with the Rex Guardians and their Sky Knight, Harrier, honored by an ancient Code. After issuing a challenge and winning the crystal, Harrier mistakenly made a deal with Joker and gave the crystal to him. But Joker double-crossed him and tried to kill the Phoenix who guarded the crystal. But then the crystal was taken back by a Dark Ace lookalike who goes by the name of Spade. After healing the Phoenix, she gave the crystal to the Storm Hawks as a thank you gift for saving her. Harrier also gave them a book containing a list of Skylight Guardian powers as an apology. But who is Spade? What does he have to do with Dark Ace? Will this book help the Storm Hawks unlock new powers? This and more await our heroes of the Atmos. Leave a review if you want.
