Nightmare

A young boy of about four years was in bed, tossing and turning. He was having a terrible nightmare. The boy cried out in his troubled sleep. The door to his room opened and a man came in and woke the boy, pulling him from the awful dream that held him captive. The boy sat up and began to cry.

"It's okay," the man said in a soothing, protective voice. "It's okay now." But the young boy continued to sob. The man picked him up and began pacing around the room. After a few minutes, when the boy wouldn't stop crying, the man opened his mouth and began to sing.

"Tell me why you're crying my son,
I know you're frightened like ev'ryone.
Is it the thunder in the distance you fear?
Will it help if I stay very near?
I am here."

The boy stopped crying and listened intently to the haunting chorus. His eyes glistened with the recently shed tears, but no more fell. The man finished the chorus and walked to the window, sighing. The boy made a noise and the man began to sing the second verse.

"Do you ask why I'm sighing, my son?
You shall inherit what mankind has done.
In a world filled with sorrow and woe
If you ask me why this is so . . .
I really don't know."

The boy smiled at the man and giggled, but the man continued to sigh sadly. After a moment, he continued the song.

"Tell me why you're smiling, my son.
Is there a secret you can tell everyone?
Do you know more than men that are wise?
Can you see what we all must disguise,
Through your loving eyes?

And if you take my hand, my son,
All will be well when the day is done,
If you take my hand, my son,
All will be well when the day is done."

The man put the boy to bed and tucked him in. As he opened the door and let himself out of the room, he turned back and whispered to the already sleeping boy.

"Goodnight, Draco," he said to his son. Then he closed the door, and the beam of light coming from the doorway disappeared.

The boy never had another nightmare as long as he lived.

Author's Note:

Truth is, I have no clue why I wrote this. I was trying to write an English essay and then that old Peter, Paul and Mary song popped into my head. Before I knew it, it was a song fic.

Lotsa Love,
