ADVENT Military After-Action Report 2219
Operation: Broken Crescent
Author: Commander Laura Christiaens
Recipients: Chancellor Saudia Vyandar; Chief of Lancer Operations Helion Weekes; Chief Diplomat Firdaus Hassan; Director of ADVENT Intelligence Ian Powell; General Hank Avel; the Commander of XCOM
It will be difficult to effectively summarize the operation that took place, as it had not been one we had especially expected at this juncture in the war. The previous political situation in Turkey did not lend itself to direct intervention, and while we considered the possibility of Collective annexation, we did not expect it to happen so quickly.
As a result, most of our operational plans for Turkey were forced to be reworked to take into account the rapid modernization and danger of the Turkish forces, as well as the vulnerabilities to the regime that were introduced as a result of the annexation. For all intents and purposes, the fact that this operation was ultimately successful is a testament to the ingenuity, creativity, and effectiveness of our officers and soldiers.
Everyone is to be commended for the results of this operation, no matter how small a role they may have had, and we cannot forget that it was ultimately the Night Stand which permitted us time to turn the tide of the operation, otherwise we would almost certainly still be fighting throughout the Middle East.
Sustained Operational Efforts into Turkey: Once the front line was stabilized, we implemented a gradual advance which would slowly move from the south front northward. This methodical approach would serve to ensure an unbroken line, and allow us to quickly reinforce the line or plug gaps without having to worry about a rapid outflank and subsequent encirclement.
This approach ultimately proved to be successful, and while it slowed our operations to some degree, and allowed the combined Turkish and Collective forces time to build up their defenses in larger cities such as Ankara and Istanbul, it made it almost impossible for Turkey to regain ground lost to us.
Morale was also more easily able to be sustained. Our forces already possessed an advantage due to the Night Stand, and with each subsequent victory, no matter the size, their morale was substantially maintained while the Turkish forces subsequently lost more and more hope of victory. This further emboldened and encouraged resistance groups and ethnic minorities to continue causing problems for Turkey, correctly judging it as a moment to act, sometimes in conjunction, sometimes independently of ADVENT.
Utilization of Ethnic Tensions: Turkey is a country with a significant number of ethnic minorities which have historically been mistreated or otherwise viewed as second-class citizens to the Turkish ethnic majority. All of those reading this report are aware of the Kurds as the most numerous minorities, however these minority groups also include the Azeri, Arabs, Assyrians, Armenians, Bulgarians, Greeks, and other tribal minorities.
This has led to significant internal tensions within the country, which Turkey had taken steps to mitigate, by attempting to forge a national Turkish identity beyond ethnicity, as well as curbing mistreatment of ethnic groups that were deemed 'loyal' (in the sense that they did not protest the government). These efforts have been only partially successful, and have been undermined by Turkish hardliners, intermittent enforcement of standards, and foreign agitation and support for ethnic groups hostile to the current Turkish government.
In short, this proved an extremely fertile ground to facilitate unrest. Through ADVENT Intelligence contact was made with numerous ethnic groups throughout Turkey, and by supplying them weapons and other pieces of equipment they were able to foment an effective resistance and draw Turkish and alien attention away from the front lines. This has been done with the understanding that they will have a say in the coming Turkish government.
Utilization of Kurdish Resistance: The largest group we have utilized is the existing Kurdish resistance. Most of the Kurds that are viewed as threats to the government had left for Syria, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, with only a small minority remaining in Turkey. These groups were explicitly utilized and armed during the operation, and we were able to effectively gain significant insight into various cities, territories, and states due to Kurdish insight.
This was negotiated with prominent Kurdish leaders, that in return for their unconditional support, the establishment of a Kurdish state would be done, which would encompass parts of Turkey, Syria and potentially Iraq and Iran, before being integrated into the Middle Eastern States. This was approved by the Chancellor, and the details of which will be determined in the following negotiations to break up Turkey.
Status of the Greek Front: The Greek Front was one which had endured the worst effects from the Collective annexation of Turkey, and while large chunks of land had been lost, the gradual collapse of Turkey eventually allowed the front to stabilize, and the fomenting of Greek resistance organizations accelerated the complete collapse and encirclement of retreating Collective and Turkish forces.
With the fall of all major Turkish cities and their capital, Greece has been fully secured and the front has been stabilized, for what little fighting remains from alien holdouts.
Effects of Turkish Collapse: The collapse of Turkey has removed the largest threat to our hold over the Middle East and Europe. Turkey had clearly been intended – and used – as a launching point for a significant number of operations towards Europe and further south into the Middle East. The Night Stand in addition to the Battle of the Hiveship contributed to our ability to turn the tide, and as of right now, the region is capable of being stabilized.
This has resulted in our subsequent control of Turkey, which was the last major nation in the Middle Eastern region that was not under our influence. With it removed, it will be extremely difficult for the Collective to penetrate either the Middle East or Europe, and thus secures our hold over a crucial piece of the world.
Turkish collapse has also deeply weakened the ability of the Collective to wage continual war on Europe. While they retain certain pieces of territory in Ukraine, and have caused significant damage to our energy sector and food stores, this is unlikely to be properly turned into a major front, especially as it falls under the recently negotiated ceasefire, allowing us to formulate an effective strategy to expel them.
Status of the Turkish Loyalists: Please note that "Loyalists" are defined as Turkish officials who did not participate in the overthrow of the government or align with the Ethereal Collective. These include a number of military and political officials who either outright defected to us, retained their positions and passed information to ADVENT or resistance organizations, or were jailed for their affiliation or perceived threat to the new regime.
These do include major political figures, chief of them former Turkish President Sarper. These officials are uncertain as to what they will be able to gain, and none of them are expecting us to return independence to Turkey, but they are expecting some degree of compensation and a seat at the table when the fate of Turkey is decided.
As of right now, the exact degree to which they will be permitted is unknown, and discussions relating to such are underway. While it is not recommended that former officials be reinstated, it is also worth noting that, tempting as it is to turn Turkey into a region dictated by previously oppressed minorities, the majority ethnic group is Turkish, and we ignore this at our own peril. The utilization and reinstatement of some previous officials will almost certainly allow Turkey to be integrated into ADVENT with minimal issues.
This is a point that should be emphasized to all ADVENT negotiators.
Assessment of the Lion's Ankara Operation: A major reason why the rather accelerated success of this operation happened was due to the operations conducted by the Lion. Our own estimates stated that it was very likely the war would continue for at least another month or two due to sustained Collective support and hardening Turkish resolve.
The Lion has established extremely deep and far-reaching connections throughout the entire region, as well as harboring a hatred for Turkey due to his past. His understanding of the region, ethnic groups, and political prisoners taken by Turkey allowed him to conceptualize an operation that brought down Ankara in hours through a way that was not anticipated.
There were reasons this method was looked upon with skepticism, however General Avel successfully lobbied for implementation of his plan, and it has appeared to pay off with our victory and the collapse of Turkey. There are some concerns with the degree of influence the Lion has over regional military policy and General Avel, however it is also due to his competence and General Avel's trust being well-founded.
With that said, the sheer influence the Lion has over these resistance groups, as well as Loyalist Turkish officials, was an unanticipated variable and one that should be carefully appraised. We do not have a complete understanding of all of these groups, while the Lion does, and it is not out of the question he will use them to push forward his agenda for the subsequent discussion on the fate of Turkey.
There are also concerns that the Lion utilized his operations to release allies or friends of his, in particular the Ikhwan who were extremely influential within the Caliphate. While these appear to be Ikhwan who had been loyal to the Inheritor King, and not the Caliph, the fact that they are now free and likely to have influence in the following conference is disconcerting, and should be controlled lest it become public knowledge that not only has a Caliphate-era group survived, but has direct input on ADVENT policy and operations.
Assessment of Political Ramifications: While Turkey has fallen, this is almost certainly the beginning of an effort to handle the country. Due to the ethnic makeup of the country, this is likely to be a protracted and complex debate that ADVENT will need to handle carefully to avoid another Sykes-Picot situation.
There are going to almost certainly be ethnic minorities who will demand independent states and having a voice in the Congress of Nations. These should be considered, and in the case of the Kurds, an independent state is promised. However, this should be done on a careful basis. The Kurds are a concentrated and large enough group to justify such actions, this cannot be done with every single group with only thousands.
While we must consider there be justice for Turkish oppression of this group, we can also not let this lead to decisions that will lead to the unnecessary breakup of a nation of which the Turkish ethnic groups are a clear majority, nor ignore the other minorities who do view themselves as Turkish before their own ethnicity.
We also expect that there will be nations that call for extreme punishment and breakup of Turkey, specifically Syria, Armenia, and Greece. It is almost certain that each of them will demand territorial concessions. Some Greek officials have already requested that Istanbul be returned to their control, and the name restored to Constantinople. This request has been denied, and such actions, if any, must be made with extreme caution.
There is a delicate balance in Turkey that must be carefully managed, and one in which there will be political pressure from multiple sides to achieve their end goals. We expect President Hakeem to take a major role as well as French President le Suivre who has notably expressed support for reinstating Loyalist Turkish officials in exchange for complete compliance with ADVENT.
It is recommended that ADVENT Intelligence and the Military have representation at these talks, due to our involvement on the ground and direct insight into these issues which politicians will not inherently possess. This is an opportunity to right the wrongs Turkey has inflicted, but we must do it in such a way that is not only fair – but which will not lead to future instability.
ANKARA – Following weeks of fighting in Turkey, ADVENT has officially secured the capital of the enemy state, as well as other major locations within the nation. One of the most involved and rapid campaigns in the war, culminating in the Battle of Ankara, has come to an end, and now ADVENT will contend with the aftermath.
The Turkish government, primarily made up of a minority of officials who defected to the Collective, is either in custody, dead, or have fled. The whereabouts of Former President Kaan are unknown, though it is believed that he was evacuated by the Collective and is currently being protected. This does not appear to extend to most of the government.
"Nearly all of the regime officials have been accounted for," an ADVENT official confirmed in an official release. "While there is a minority that are unaccounted for, the majority are within ADVENT custody or have been confirmed as deceased. We are unaware of the current whereabouts of Former President Kaan, and will provide an update when he has been located."
The operation to capture Ankara, which was estimated by internal ADVENT officials and exterior experts to take a significant amount of time to fall, despite sustained pressure, surprised everyone when it succeeded using what have been described as unorthodox but effective tactics. "ADVENT clearly had some tricks up their sleeve," one expert in the region said. "It isn't surprising that ADVENT was in contact with a significant number of minority groups, but it is surprising that so many of them were involved. The Turkish forces were simply overwhelmed."
Many minority organizations previously oppressed by Turkey have been celebrating their fall and ADVENT's victory. Streets in cities across Turkey, as well as in Syria, Armenia, and Greece have erupted in celebration at the subsequent collapse, as for the first time the Turkish hold over their communities is gone.
Kurdish soldiers who assisted in the operation, as well as subsequent organizations were very encouraged in their discussions with ADVENT. "ADVENT made promises," one prominent Kurdish spokesman said. "Promises we expect – and believe – they are going to keep. This is a day that will be remembered forever."
There remain questions that ADVENT has not answered about the future of Turkey. When asked about their intentions for the region, an ADVENT spokesman said that: "We will be entering into protracted discussions with former Turkish officials, citizens, and ethnic minorities to put together a plan for the nation that is fair to all. This is a complex situation that we will mediate with equal care."
One major unknown is the status and role of former Turkish officials who did not support the Ethereal Collective. While there has been some pressure to prevent them from having any hand in the discussions for Turkey, ADVENT has not indicated that they will not be involved, and have not released a statement about their role in future negotiations.
While ADVENT's victory in Turkey is a time of celebration for many, there are others who are viewing the developments with a mixture of cautious optimism. "These were groups and factions that were united with a common enemy," one expert said, urging people to temper their expectations. "With that gone, Turkey becomes more similar to a house of cards. ADVENT is not going to be able to please everyone, and if they know better, they won't pretend otherwise."
It is expected that ADVENT will begin discussions on Turkey's fate very soon, with Chancellor Saudia Vyandar and President Hakeem al-Saud of the Middle Eastern States planning to meet in the coming days.
Article | "Ankara Falls to ADVENT; Victory over Turkey Declared"
To Harbinger Trask,
I regret to inform you that as of the submission of this report, we have effectively lost control over the nation of Turkey, which had served as a major staging ground for our offensives deeper into the Middle East and Europe. While we retain some of our success in the form of our foothold in Ukraine, most of our forces dedicated to the region have been lost.
A review of our methods and operations that took place is necessary to determine why our initial success in the region was slowly diminished. It was not just the defeat in the so-called "Night Stand" or the loss of the Hiveship, but more systemic issues that we failed to, or did not properly account for when we supported the Turkish government which requested our help.
There are other factors which were not directly in our control, but which we did not anticipate, and it is important we identify and address these prior to future operations with similar considerations. Our strategy is something which needs to be reevaluated worldwide, but especially for future offensives in the Middle East.
INITIAL SUCCESS AND REGIME CHANGE: Our success against ADVENT in the region was initially very high. We had successfully identified sympathetic figures in the Turkish government and in return for promised support, they agreed to act against ADVENT. We assisted in the removal, arrest, and termination of identified Turkish Loyalist officials, most of whom are likely in ADVENT custody now.
The Turkish government was initially able to maintain stability and a dedicated military core, especially while emphasizing Turkish nationalism and rallying the dominant Turkish ethnic group around them. This was not wholly successful, but it was enough to prevent the country from immediately collapsing, and with additional Sectoid and Zararch support this was solidified.
This appeared to initially take ADVENT by surprise, and we immediately moved to use Turkey as a staging ground for other operations, specifically into Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East, and Greece and Ukraine in Europe. These saw initial success until the Night Stand where the offensives south were promptly stopped, giving ADVENT time to reinforce and establish a sustainable line.
We did not see a replication of our initial success after this point.
MISMANAGEMENT OF UNREST: Despite the Turkish state remaining stable, the Turkish government proved extremely incompetent at both managing and acting upon the unrest displayed. It was not solely from the ethnic minorities, but along class and religious lines. Groups from Islamic hardliners to financial elites were demanding concessions and attention from the government and threatening to further destabilize the situation.
Instead of carefully formulating a strategy to mitigate the demands of these religious, class, and ethnic groups, it appears the plan for managing this was simply insufficient, and they did not consult us for assistance. They attempted to placate the more powerful and influential groups, which stymied the majority of the unrest, but did not remove it.
Ignoring or otherwise angering the other groups led to a significant undercurrent of anger which ADVENT properly exploited using funding, weapons, and proxies to turn vast swathes of the population into informants and rebels, some knowing they were working for ADVENT, some not.
The Turkish government was already a minority who openly sided with the Collective, they were resistant to direct Zararch support, and simply did not have the resources, manpower, or plan to effectively deal with this. It is not because they didn't try, they simply were overconfident and lacked the resources to manage it properly.
Several times we directly asked to assist and were refused, due to claims of "Not understanding the needs of the region", and per our agreement, did not interfere. For any future agreements with nation-states, we must ensure that we retain emergency control if these governments are incapable of successfully managing their countries.
MISCALCULATION OF UNREST: Previously, the Turkish government estimated that the majority of the unrest would come from the ethnic minorities in the country, which they assured us they were capable of handling due to historical precedent. This was a gross miscalculation, and deeply underestimated the level of division their alignment with us would cause.
As mentioned above, the Turkish government was forced to deal with revolts across economic classes, religious groups, and heavily influential business lobbies – all of whom were deeply uncomfortable with the direction of the nation, and which forced the Turkish government to heavily alter their response to prevent a total collapse.
This miscalculation, if it had been corrected, would have likely resulted in a far more stable Turkey and it would not have been as easily exploited by ADVENT.
OVERT AND COVERT ADVENT MANIPULATION: After they had stabilized their front lines in the Middle East, ADVENT began a rapid intelligence campaign to capitalize on the inherent weaknesses of the current Turkish state. This was done through two major campaigns – a public campaign, and a private one.
The public ones involved messaging direct from ADVENT which encouraged resistance, revolt, and assurances that ADVENT was coming to 'save' the Turkish people from alien enslavement and oppression. The success of the Night Stand and the capture of the Hiveship was used repeatedly to boost allied morale, and weaken Turkish morale to varying degrees of success.
The private campaign was primarily directed by ADVENT Intelligence, which exploited the numerous ethnic groups throughout the region, funded, armed, and otherwise supported them while promising unknown concessions. In the case of the Kurdish ethnic group, their own state was offered and accepted in return for unconditional support against Turkey.
ADVENT also utilized Greek, Bulgarian, Armenian, and other nations and peoples who are historic minorities within Turkey as primary negotiators, particularly focusing on those who had previous history with Turkey, which added to their authenticity of support from ADVENT. The Lion in particular was instrumental in ADVENT negotiating and managing these vast disconnected groups.
It was an extremely sophisticated and successful campaign, one which the Turkish government simply did not have the resources to manage or counter.
SUCCESS OF WESTERN OPERATIONS: I am judging these operations by how far they managed to get prior to Turkish collapse. Fortunately, there was significant initial success against Greece, and significant penetration of the country was achieved, and we were looking to push deeper into the Balkan region.
Unfortunately, moving through the mountainous regions of the country proved to slow our ground forces more than anticipated, and there were difficulties suppressing the numerous Greek resistance cells that appeared, supported by ADVENT. Cross-aquatic attacks were also conducted from Italy, Egypt, and Croatia forcing us to continue defending the coastlines and islands of Greece, and preventing us from fully capturing the country.
Greater success was achieved in Ukraine, where the Battlemaster successfully led an attack against the country which cut off critical energy and food supplies to the region, the effects of which will likely affect ADVENT to some degree in the future as they are forced to reroute or redirect resources towards the affected nations.
STATUS OF EUROPEAN INCURSIONS: As mentioned above, the Greek offensive has failed, and all forces have either been lost or evacuated. We retain a foothold in Ukraine, though it is a tenuous hold, and it is likely ADVENT will launch an operation to retake it when the regional ceasefire ends, and will be successful if precautions are not taken.
EVACUATION OF ALLIED GOVERNMENT FORCES: Prior to the complete collapse of the country, we were able to successfully evacuate some Turkish government officials, including President Kaan, though we were forced to utilize multiple elite operatives, and suffered some losses during the operation.
All evacuated officials are being relocated to the Sovereign African States to assist Grand Marshal Betos in resisting ADVENT and managing the state which is suffering its own issues. Despite their failure, they retain some usefulness and with direct Collective guidance, they may be able to learn and apply themselves properly to the Sovereign African States.
CURRENT STATUS OF TURKEY: Turkey is currently under the complete control of ADVENT, and while there are scattered holdouts throughout the region, they are quickly being defeated by ADVENT forces and no support should be provided to them as such would incur more pointless losses.
Right now, there has been no interim government established, and ADVENT military forces are administering state control, though this will likely transition to more experienced civilian officials, though it is unlikely that ADVENT will cede control to a local civilian government for the immediate future.
There is some good news – it is likely that Turkey will occupy ADVENT attention for a significant amount of time. With ADVENT more cognizant about the intricacies of the region, and Turkey being a very diverse nation, as well as one with significant histories with other nations, they are going to approach any decision with Turkey carefully.
We expect this to be a protracted period where ADVENT will be forced to hold to what they promised to various groups, appease others, and contend with state pressures from the Middle Eastern States, Armenia, Greece, France, Bulgaria, Iran, and Azerbaijan all of whom are signaling their intent to become involved in the coming negotiations in addition to the non-state ethnic groups such as the Kurds.
Depending on how ADVENT handles this, Turkey could enter into a pseudo-state which remains unstable and incapable of easy integration into ADVENT. We should explore possible options for extending this process as much as possible, as the longer it takes, the more likely it is that ADVENT will fail to satisfy a majority of the groups.
UNEXPECTED CAPITULATION OF ANKARA AND OTHER CITIES: One thing that must be pointed out is that we did not expect the region to collapse as quickly as it did. We estimated that due to the defenses of Ankara and other major Turkish cities, they would be able to resist ADVENT sieges for several months, if not longer.
We did expect that Turkey would eventually be forced to capitulate, but the manner of which it happened was swift and unexpected. There were moles in the Turkish government that were undetected, and there was a concerted effort by ADVENT Intelligence and local groups to whip up the local population, which revolted against the government, turning the entire city into a battleground, allowing ADVENT control over the defenses, and allowing them to effectively walk into the city.
Part of this was due to the freeing of dozens of political and military prisoners in Turkey, many of whom either held previous roles in the government, or had a hatred for Turkey and were weaponized against it. Parts of the serving Turkish army proved less loyal, and several dozen major defections happened over the course of a few hours – almost certainly coordinated – which were essential for ADVENT securing control over the country.
We also believe that ADVENT was able to successfully arm and infiltrate Ankara and other cities due to a previously unknown network of tunnels under the ground, which they used to rapidly smuggle weapons and supplies to arm the population. Turkish officials were tangibly aware of the existence of the tunnels, but all of them dismissed the risk, or pointed out that there are no existing maps, and hadn't been in use for decades – and specifically pointed out that ADVENT themselves should be ignorant because they were primarily utilized by terrorists and smugglers – not state actors.
HEIGHTENED PROFILE OF ADVENT INDIVIDUAL "THE LION": This brings me to a point which has become necessary – it cannot be denied that the individual known as the "Lion" and to a lesser extent, ADVENT General Hank Avel have played a major, if not defining role in ADVENT's success in Turkey.
We already know that the Lion has significant connections to various ethnic, religious, and resistance groups throughout the Middle East, and his personal hatred of Turkey is known to us. The fall of Ankara was an operation explicitly designed and carried out by him, and because of it we need to elevate his profile to a higher level.
The Lion must be terminated as soon as possible. He represents a Commander-level threat to our operations, and ADVENT is almost certainly going to employ him elsewhere, and it would be in our interests to ensure he is disposed of before that happens. His removal is expediated, and your direct support for this will be appreciated.
Turkey was a loss for us, but it is one we will learn and recover from. Our lessons are already being applied across the battlefronts.

To Agent Delorias Zho Orion, Herald of the Armada
This message will be short. Events on Earth have continued to command my attention, as Imperator Viatorian continues his invasion of Earth and his Harbinger Patricia Trask continues to align resources to use against the Warmaster directly. This falls within norms, as we are expecting such, though this is nonetheless something to ensure is closely watched.
Further considerations that need to be taken are the fact that there are indications that Mosrimor is primed to take a larger role in the conflict, especially as the Collective continues to cede ground and face internal divisions, most of which continue stemming from the actions and ideology of the Battlemaster.
As of right now, the reach of the Bringer of Paradise has been curtailed due to an agreement with the Battlemaster. A moratorium has been placed on the deployment of any of their soldiers, though it remains to be seen if this will be enforced. The Battlemaster will likely enforce this, as neither the Imperator nor Patricia have indicated that they will break it. We expect this to change when the Warmaster is assaulted, as the Imperator will not risk a direct assault on a Sovereign One without bringing every single asset of equivalent power.
Briefly returning to the situation on Earth, in addition to the current ceasefire agreed to by the Battlemaster, the Collective has lost a significant staging ground on Earth in the Middle Eastern region (I do not expect you to know where this is, but understand it is a significant acquisition). Events that took place during this conflict have brought my attention to a certain individual who has been instrumental in ADVENT's victory.
His name is one you would not recognize, nor has been a relevant factor, though he has gone by the moniker of 'the Lion', and has displayed a notable battlefield intelligence along with an ingenuity that has first allowed ADVENT to resist what should have been a sure defeat, and ended a campaign that should have continued for at least one or two months.
There are very few people I have encountered who are capable of achieving something on this scale successfully, most of whom are dead, and the Commander is currently serving in XCOM. While this may be a premature assessment in a short period of time, his successes and efforts have demanded that I pay attention.
I suspect you know where I am going with this – to clarify, I do not believe he should be an Agent. He does not possess certain necessary characteristics, but he does display the correct aptitudes for the proposed role. This role has yet to be brought up to the Commander or Chancellor Vyandar, though it is likely to be approved. What is less certain is if they will view him as an appropriate figure. I believe the Commander will raise strong opposition should it be proposed.
I am also not enshrining this yet, and will be observing the Lion closely in the coming weeks. Depending on his performance, my recommendation may be solidified. I am informing you of this because it would require him being appraised of not only the reality of the Sovereign Ones and Cycles, but also details of the Armada, which both the Commander and Chancellor Vyandar have yet to be appraised of.
I am aware that you have only just been awakened, and are beginning preliminary measures. T'Leth has identified a number of individuals who are capable of filling the necessary roles, and they will be approached shortly. As more Agents are awakened, and T'Leth assumes a more direct role, you will receive additional support, though the war on Earth will demand the priorities of the Agents.
I look forward to our full review.
