Sigh. My life had been horrible so far, and now it was going to get even worse. I hurriedly pulled on my fluffy bunny shoes and trudged downstairs. Ok, I ran, and almost tripped. And then I limped the rest of the way through the hallway and came face to face with mum. And she wasn't looking happy.
"You were fighting yesterday." She said. "With a miss Brenda Chaplin." I swallowed and nodded. I looked down at the ground. Ever since I had started high school the older kids had picked on me. I stood out like a sore thumb. I wanted my old school back, where I could eat my lunch without the fear that Brenda the Bully would chuck it all over me.
"We will talk about this when you get back from school, young lady." She said menacingly.
I blinked back the angry tears welling in my eyes and walked away.
I had just walked out of the door when I noticed that I was still wearing my bunny slippers. It was raining heavily, and by now they looked like big soggy hamsters. I had to wait outside in the cold for mum to answer the door. When she did, she was holding my school shoes.
"Forgot these?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Ha-ha." I forced myself to smile and turned to go out of the door. I then realised that I had forgotten to take my bag. And I was already 5 minutes late for school.
"I'll take you but only today." Mum sighed.
I properly smiled this time.
"Thanks again," I said, smiling from ear to ear. Mum had got me there only 10 minutes late. She drove like a maniac and had honked her way through the biggest of jams.
"No problem honey," she said. "have a good day at school!"
As soon as she drove off, I got the feeling someone was watching me. And boy, was I right.
"Sooooo…" smirked Brenda. "What you doing?"
"Nunya." I answered. This day was gonna be the day I told her off good and proper.
"Don't you nunya me." She snarled. She cracked her fists together furiously. "Go on. Go away. This is our territory."
I fled, speeding my way to the school office.
Things were about to get even worse. At home time, as I crossed the road I saw an old man walking reeeaaalllyy slowly across it. And a car was coming at full speed towards him.
"No!" I screamed, but even then, I knew that he couldn't hear me. I would have to think of something fast. Without thinking, I leapt in front of him and pushed him onto the pavement. The car was going to hit me. And then –
BRRRRRRRRRRRR!
- The person inside put on the brakes.
Phew!
I was saved.
"What were you thinking?" the driver got out of the car and rushed to my side. "You could have been killed!"
"Leave her alone! Can't you see she's been awfully shocked?" an old lady shouted from the pavement. They hauled me onto the side of the road. It was all too much. I lost consciousness. The last thing I saw before I closed my eyes was a man wearing a red shirt with floral patterns on it and small leather shoes.
