(Author's note: I do not own Teen Titans. Also this is my first attempt at writing a fanfic so please be nice.)
Beastboy was having a rough time for the past couple of weeks. Time and time again he kept getting injured during missions. At first he thought it was just a fluke but as the pattern continued he began to doubt himself. His recent failures were making him feel inadequate.
After some heavy reflections Beastboy realized that he has always just been the comic relief of the group, but deep down he always wanted to be more. He always wanted to be a hero in his own right. But right now this all seemed like a pipe dream. Beastboy knew he could never compete with the other heroes. He left the doom patrol to step out of their shadows only to become the shadow of another team. He figured that it must be destiny.
He gazed around the mess of his room. Raven had been berating him about how messy his room was for a while now, even going so far as to call it a 'pigsty'.
"Man I really gotta get around to cleaning this stuff up."
Beastboy picked up a random pile of items off of the floor but a comic book managed to slip out. It was a story about Superman and his dog Krypto. It detailed the story about how Krypto managed to escape the phantom zone and reunite with his master.
Beastboy always looked up to Superman. Superman was someone who was respected and could inspire others. That is who Beastboy always wanted to be, not some immature brat desperately seeking attention from others.
Beastboy sighed and picked up the comic book and looked out the window. He saw a streak of white light race across the jet black night sky. It was a shooting star.
"I wish… I wish I could be like superman."
The next day
It was training day. Beastboy hated training day because it meant he had to get up extra early. As per usual he was the last person to wake up. Beastboy made his way to the gym. The Titans had two hours of free practice and then sparring with a random titan at 11:00. He decided he would spend the free training time by lifting weights with Cyborg.
"Forty-five, Forty-six, Forty-seven, Forty-eig-." Cyborg was already in the midst of lifting weights. Nobody really understood why a half robot would have to worry about exercising in the first place.
"Forty-two, Twenty-eight, Eleven, Sixty-three" Beastboy began saying random numbers, disrupting Cyborg and making him lose count.
"Jeez BB. I was just about to break fifty." He shot Beastboy a small glare in annoyance.
"Guess you'll have to start all over again!" Beastboy said, trying to contain a giggle.
"Will you two ever grow up?" Raven rolled her eyes as she passed them.
Beastboy thought about what Raven. Maybe it was time for him to grow up and start taking being a superhero more seriously.
Two hours of gruesome exercising later and Beastboy was exhausted. He was about to take a small break but Robin called the team over for sparring.
"All right. It's sparring time." Robin pulled out two random names out of a hat. "Looks like Beastboy and Starfire will go first."
Beastboy gulped nervously. The last time him and Star sparred she almost ripped off his leg.
"Then let us commence the battle of sparring!" Starfire let out a fearsome battle cry and tackled beastboy onto the ground.
"No wait Star. You're supposed to-" Robin shouted.
BONK
Beastboy woke up in the med bay. Starfire was hovering over him with an apologetic look on her face.
"Wha- What happened?" He said, trying to get up but felt a feeling of pain rush throughout his body.
"Star knocked you out pretty hard." Cyborg said.
"I am most sorry." Starfire looked like she was on the verge of tears. "I did not know that we were supposed to enter the arena of the combat before starting the sparring. And I did not mean to do the punching that hardly"
"It's okay Star." He gave her a reassuring thumbs up. "I'll be okay."
"I made you the meal of vegetarian food for you." Starfire handed beastboy a bowl of strange brownish liquid.
"Ohhhh… thanks."
"C'mon Star. BB needs to rest now." Cyborg nudged Starfire towards the door.
Starfire nodded and left the room. After she left Cyborg took the bowl and dumped its contents into the trash.
"Thanks Cy."
"Wouldn't wish Star's cooking on my worst enemy. Don't tell her I said that." He said as he closed the door.
Once Cyborg and Starfire were gone Beastboy let out another sigh. Was he really so weak that just one punch from Starfire could knock him out. Granted one punch from Starfire is like being stomped by a bull but still. She wasn't going all out, or anywhere close for that matter, and he was still knocked out.
The next day
That dreaded alarm came blaring at full force and the Titan's made their way to the common room.
"Looks like cinderblock managed to break out of prison." Robin said while examining the computer. Beastboy let out a groan.
Robin turned to Beastboy. "Uh beastboy maybe you should sit this one out." He spoke softly, his voice sounding concerned.
"What why?"
"Your recent performance." Raven responded bluntly.
"Hey! I was caught off guard!"
"Were you caught off guard for the past month too?" she responded in her usual monotone voice.
"You saying I ain't good enough!" Beastboy said with a hint of aggravation in his tone.
"No. Of course not. We're just saying you look a little tired is all." Cyborg said with an equally concerned tone.
"I'm fine. You don't got to worry bout me." Beastboy gave a fake grin in an attempt to hide the fact that he was not fine.
"Alright just try to take it easy man."
"And don't get in our way." Raven interjected. She didn't even need to be an empath to tell that Beastboy was actually not okay.
"Hmph" Beastboy crossed his arms before taking the form of a bald eagle and rushed out of the tower.
'Looks like I'll have to keep an extra eye on him to make sure he doesn't do anything reckless' Raven thought to herself.
"I do hope friend Beastboy is alright. He has been acting the most strange as of the recently."
"Me too star. Me too." Robin said.
Arriving at the battle field the Titans witnessed the destruction that Cinderblock had created. People were flooding the streets in a mad rush to get away as fast as they can. Entire buildings were being destroyed by the behemoth.
"Here's the plan. Cyborg your up first. Use your sonic canon to push back cinderblock while Raven, Starfire and I blast him from afar."
"What about me?"
"Beastboy... you're on damage control."
"Damage control?! Are you kidding me!"
"Seems like the perfect job for you." Raven was relieved that Robin had given Beastboy the 'damage control' position. At least now the changeling wouldn't be putting himself in any danger.
"Damage control is a very vital role Beastb-" Robin was about to finish his sentence but was abruptly cut off.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever." Beastboy muttered. He wasn't going to be lectured about the importance of 'damage control' while cinderblock was causing carnage across the city.
"Great. Titans go!" Robin said as the rest of the Titans rushed off.
"Ugh. Stupid teammates. Always treating me like I'm a little kid." Beastboy kicked a pile of debris that had fallen off of a building during cinderblock's rampage. The debris was hard and made him wince in pain.
Although the fight started out well for the Titans, things rapidly changed for the worse. Cyborg's cannon managed to push cinderblock a few feet back but as the battle dragged on he began to run out of power.
Once Cyborg became drained out and needed to stop, Cinderblock seized his opportunity and struck down the half-robot with one fell swoop.
Without the support of Cyborg, the team became quickly overwhelmed. Starfire's starbolts were far less effective when cinderblock wasn't being constantly bombarded with sonic blasts. Furthermore without the extreme pressure cinderblock was free to utilize his entire body in order to strike at the Titans.
She resorted to flying circles around the wall of cement in an attempt to avoid his strikes. But Cinderblock eventually managed to get a lucky swing in and knocked her out of the fight.
Robin used his advanced martial arts in order to avoid being hit by cinderblock. Throwing his bird-a-rangs and dodging Cinderblock's attacks gracefully. But he was caught off guard when cinderblock smashed his hands against the ground, causing a small earthquake and launching Robin off into the air.
Finally it was Raven's turn. She used her telekinesis to hurl various items at cinderblock. These included rocks, debris and a bus. But she was not anticipating Cinderblock to punch the bus directly right back at her.
"Raven!" Beastboy said in horror as he watched this all unfold. In just a couple of seconds the Titans had gone from almost having a decisive victory to being beaten back and now Raven was about to smacked in the face by a bus.
Beastboy began to panic. He was too far away. There was no way he could reach her in time even if he transformed into a cheetah. But he couldn't just stand there and let his friend get crushed. At that moment Beastboy did something that would change his life forever...
In a flash of an eye the bus had been broken in half. A beam of heat blasted out of a canine's eyes destroying the bus and also knocking cinderblock back too. The heat intensified, ripping a hole right through cinderblock and causing him to collapse onto the ground.
The other Titans stared in astonishment. They all turned back to look in awe as they saw a green dog floating in mid air.
"Friend Beastboy?" Starfire was the most confused as to what just happened. "I did not know that the earth dogs could do that."
"That wasn't an earth dog Starfire." Robin being trained by Batman first hand was the first to deduce what occurred. "That was Kryptonian."
