Chapter 1:

Hitsugaya could not believe this was happening again. Granted, the first time had all been a dream, but he didn't like the direction his dream had taken and feared the same events would take place.

Looking down at the small cut on the back of his hand, Hitsugaya decided to get ahead of the situation before it became a problem.

"Akon, this is a werewolf fang that cut me. Since it punctured the skin, that counts as a bite. I'm going to turn into a werewolf."

The skeptical Akon didn't pay him any attention. "You're overreacting. This is unlike you, Captain Hitsugaya."

"I'm serious!" He grabbed Akon by his shoulder and held him back. He could not let Akon leave before he made him understand. "Look! The cut's already healed. What's that tell you?" Hitsugaya waved his hand in his face.

Akon glanced at the back of Hitsugaya's hand. "Either it didn't actually cut you and you merely felt it graze your skin or you're a fast healer. Nothing to worry about."

"You don't understand." Hitsugaya stood in front of him. "This is exactly like my dream. In my dream, that fang cut me and I became a werewolf. Byakuya was a vampire and Yumichika a harpy."

"You have weird dreams."

"I'm telling you, this is happening just like in my dream. I'll start showing signs- a craving for meat and everything."

"If it does, then it's just in your head."

"I'll turn into a wolf when I'm excited or stressed."

"Then you should be one now and you're not."

Hitsugaya dragged his fingers down his face in frustration. "I know it sounds crazy but it's exactly like my dream."

"Even this conversation?" asked Akon, which made Hitsugaya pause.

"Well, not this conversation, but the one before was the same."

Akon did not look convinced. "A variant is not the same exact conversation."

"I'm aware of that, but we didn't have this conversation in my dream because I didn't know what was happening. This time around, I know. And we need to get ahead of it before it becomes an issue."

"If we perceived every dream as a premonition, then I'd be wearing hats on my feet to keep the sun from being blocked out. Dreams don't make any sense, a lot of them. A lot of what we dream about isn't even plausible. My own Captain will admit to that… Of course, that won't stop him from trying, knowing him…"

"I'm telling you, take this seriously." Hitsugaya admitted that it sounded farfetched but the conversation leading up to this moment was more or less the same and Yachiru came in and bumped into Akon, just like in his dream, knocking the box into the air where the fang fell out and stuck itself into the back of Hitsugaya's hand. That part of the dream was the same but afterward, everything was different.

"With all due respect, Captain Hitsugaya, I don't think you should pay attention to that dream of yours. Lots of people dream about things they mistake as premonitions because they were thinking about the things they planned on doing in the future and had a dream about it. I myself have dreamed about going into work and cleaning equipment only to wake up and do just that with a sense of déjà vu."

"Listen to me," Hitsugaya urged. "How else would I know that box contains a werewolf fang, harpy claw and vampire fang?"

Akon looked down at the box in his hand. "Perhaps someone mentioned it to you and you dreamed the rest?"

"But it's a private project of yours you and Mayuri are working on out of curiosity."

"Then I'd say coincidence."

Hitsugaya moved closer. "Have you been to see Byakuya earlier with that box?"

Akon's expression did not change. "Yes."

"In my dream, Byakuya became a vampire and enslaved several people by biting them."

"Captain Kuchiki would never…"

"Once his vampiric nature kicked in, he no longer cared," said Hitsugaya. "He embraced that side of himself. He also did not know what his powers or need for blood would do to people. We need to get ahead of this now to avoid the issues that happened in my dream."

"What could he possibly do that's so horrible? It's Kuchiki."

"He enslaved the entire Stealth Force, three high-ranking Soul Reapers, yourself included, and kills three people."

Akon blinked. "Wait. I end up enslaved?"

"That's what you got from that?!"

"Calm down," said Akon. "Nothing's happened yet. What if you're mistaken? It's best to hold off until something actually occurs. You can't charge someone for a crime until they commit one."

Hitsugaya knew Akon had a point, but given how things turned out in his dream, he didn't want to wait. "But we can still take precautions. You keep a bucket of water nearby when you build a campfire, right?"

Akon sighed. "Look, this is just a gamble of interest. We have no idea if any of these old bones actually hold any merit to them."

"Trust me, they do."

"But they're fantasy. Old stories. Fairytales. There's no guarantee these hold any sort of power or if they are the power we suspect. That's why we run tests in a safe environment. To check and see if something is poison, we don't eat it. We give it to the person we like least."

"Akon!"

"It was a joke." He said everything without a smile. "The point is, how do you know what's going to happen? Because of a dream? That's hardly proof. Besides, what if things turn out differently than your dream?"

"Oh, I'm counting on it," Hitsugaya said with determination.

Hitsugaya had a feeling no one would believe him. If someone were to tell him the same thing, he probably would not believe them, but he was determined to alter the events of his dream just in case. He was pretty sure what to expect and was going to make sure no one got hurt this time.

As time went on and no symptoms showed, Hitsugaya was starting to feel ridiculous, thinking Akon was right and that it was all a dream.

The day ended and he returned to the barracks to get some rest. "Well, I suppose I didn't start getting any weird cravings until the next day, if I remember my dream correctly. I feel fine right now but I'll know in the morning if I start wanting meat."

He slept on and off all night, waking up periodically as if to check and see if he had sprouted a tail. Nothing happened and he woke feeling tired the next morning. However, he became alert when he realized he had loaded up his plate with meat at lunch.

"You know, Captain, you could be doing this to yourself," said Rangiku when he took notice of it and spoke his mind to his Lieutenant. "Isn't there a word for that? Psychic something, I think?"

"Psychosomatic?"

"No, that's not it…" Rangiku pondered away. "I'm sure it has something to do with you thinking you have something when you don't and it's all in your head but you think you're noticing things that are either unrelated or not there."

"Psychosomatic," he repeated.

"I don't think so…"

"It's either that or hypochondriac."

Rangiku turned around to peer at him over the back of the couch. "Isn't that having something to do with water? 'Hypo' is water related somehow, isn't it?"

"… No," he said flatly.

"Ah, then I guess it is what I thought. Being a hypochondriac means you think everything is wrong with you, right, Captain?"

"Basically that you're sick when you're not, yes."

"Then vola." She clapped her hands together.

"I am not a hypochondriac," he growled.

"But Captain, you think you're turning into a werewolf when you're not. What would you call that?"

"Psychosomatic."

"Hm. I would have said delusional."

Hitsugaya gripped his pen so hard it snapped in half. Rangiku slumped in her seat and didn't say anything.

He hoped Rangiku was right about it all being in his head but he didn't think it was this time. He never paid any attention to his dreams, even the very real ones, but this one in particular stuck out to him. Perhaps it was because he was trying to prevent his friends and innocent Soul Reapers from getting hurt. He occasionally had a dream where he relived stabbing Momo as he had in the battle against Aizen but those dreams were less frequent now and didn't give him the same feeling. Maybe that was because what he dreamt about had already happened and merely relived it out of fear and guilt.

"If Byakuya starts feeling sick or goes to the sickbay for anemia, then I'll know something's up."
