When Maura leaves her computer open to a Buzzfeed article titled "19 Signs You and Your BFF Are Basically a Couple," Jane realizes the feelings she may have for her best friend aren't very platonic after all. Or, five times other people assumed Jane and Maura were a couple, and one time they actually were.

It wasn't Jane's relentless energy and eager mind that wore Maura out, although they did take up a lot of Maura's processing power. It wasn't her long, impatient stride and desire to participate in sports that bore such a toll. It was the careless, casual touches.

When Jane is targeted and Maura gets swept up into the chaos that ensues, a few lessons are learnt love is found. Or perhaps not found, but realised. Sometimes, we must come close to losing something before we can truly understand its value. P/N that this is my very first fic so I'm going to apologise in advance.

Angela never saw Jane on her own any more. Maura was always beside her, always taking the seat next to her, Jane was always opening doors for her and sliding in next to her on the couch. They might as well have been attached. Angela had never seen anyone else who could put up with so much of Jane, and had never seen Jane so atypically patient for anyone else.

When Maura started at BPD, she studied her colleagues and the police force like specimens. Like the bodies she studied in the morgue. Wondering what she could glean of their lives from observation.

She wears couture and stilettos; you love her. She wears low-slung sweats and tube socks; you love her. Helping her to reconcile the two; that's how you fall IN love with her. Jane is a little lost when it comes to femininity and masculinity. Maura is going to help her figure out how to have a balance of both.

When Maura blinks her eyes awake, Jane is still there, still close.

"If I died in the line of duty, who'd do my autopsy?" Jane asked, and Maura put down her scalpel.

When they arrest Doctor Maura Isles for murder, Jane volunteers. Cavanaugh allows it; Maura has shown him kindness, and she wouldn't try to murder Jane. Korsak and Frost at her back, she cuffs Maura gently, leaving her hands in front of her instead of behind, leaving them looser than usual. She knows Maura bruises easily, doesn't want to cause her more pain. She rides in the back.

There was a reason Jane hadn't wanted Maura to join the baseball team, and it wasn't just her batting stats.

"I thought we could switch it up tonight," Maura said by way of explanation as they went down the stairs. Even with Maura in heels and Jane in flats, Jane still felt like she was taller, and that gave her confidence. She didn't feel so much of a charade, of a sham. It put some of the swagger back into her step. Set shortly after S01E06.

"Oh, you wanna fight? It's on," Jane said, her jaw set, talking to Maura the way she talked to a perp. Jane tied her hair up and Frost whistled, then looked away as Jane glared at him. Jane was stunning like this; fluid in motion, her anger almost pheromoneal. Maura shivered when Jane landed that gaze on her again, then nodded and led the way. One shot.

Maura spent her life believing that she was given up for some flaw she was unable to see, and when she was younger she scrubbed away at her skin, trying to find what part of her was wrong, what didn't fit inside her until Constance noticed and took her to a dermatologist, who made her sleep in gloves until the scratches from her nails clawing at her skin healed.
