Sara Stokes lay restlessely in her bed. She had tossed and turned for hours, unable to sleep. Finnaly she turned to face her sleeping husband. "Nick...Nick!" She whined as she poked and prodded his chest. "Sara?" He asked, his eyes still closed. "Nick, get up!" She whined again. Nick quickly shook himself awake upon hearing her using his 'serious name'. She only called him Nick when she was really serious. Usually she called him Nicky. "What's wrong, honey?" He asked concernedly. "Nick...Do you ever want to have children?" She asked him nervously. "Yes, of course! Why? Are you pregnant?" He asked quickly, excietment obvious in his voice. "No. But... I'm no good with kids Nick..What if I do get pregnant?" She asked him worriedly."Oh, honey..." Nick said softly, pulling her towards him. He hugged her and gently kissed her forehead. They just held each other for what seemed like hours. "Nicky...I've been thinking..." She said slowly. Nick smiled, noticing her return to calling him his usual name. "Well..Could we try fostering a child?" She asked timidly. Nick looked into her eyes for a moment before replying. "You know, I think that's a great idea!" He said smiling. She looked up at him and smiled. "Okay.." She replied. They disscused the idea for several hours before work, deciding that they would visit the Las Vegas Orphanage in a week, giving them enough time to prepare the spare bedroom in Nick's house for the child they would choose. They were ectatic about the idea. Sara called their supervisor, Catherine, to make sure that she and Nick could both get time off on the date they had chosen, while Nick called the Orphange to set up a meeting. Sleep had escaped their minds completely.
A week later, they were standing in front of a door marked 'Playground'. The old social worker had been very happy to let the two foster. Their records were both squeaky clean, they were young and even though they said they were just going to foster, the social worker was sure they would adopt the child after awhile. She showed them the door, and told them that most children were playing outside, and that they could just walk around and talk to them."They're used to prospective parents!" She told them happily, and left. Nick squeezed Sara's hand reassuringly, and they stood outside together.
Dozens of children wre squeezed into the small playground. Most were playing a lively game of 'TV Tag', talking to their friends or sitting on the ground drawing. A small cluster of 14-year-olds stood passing around a joint. 9-year-old Cassie McBride sat against a wall, reading. She looked up when a hush passed over the playground. She had been there long enough to know what that meant. Parents. Every time some people came out to choose a child, they would instantly quiet and watch. Everyone hoped that some random strike of luck would come, and the parents would choose them. Usually they chose the younger ones, but every once in a while they would chose an older, responsible pre-teen. The young girl looked around, and her eyes landed on a young couple. The man, who had his back to her, looked oddly fammilliar. But only when he turned around to face her, she knew why. "Nick..." She breathed. "NICK!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. She hopped up and ran towards him. Nick turned at the sound of her voice. He stared at the little girl barrelling towards him. "Cassie?" He had the time to whisper, before she jumped up and crashed into his arms.He caght her and held her close. All time stopped. Every pair of eyes was on them.
"Cassie, honey!" He whispered after a second. She hugged him silently, tears trickling down her face. She pulled back after a few minutes to look him in the eye. He was also crying, as was the brunette holding his hand. Cassie stared at Sara. "Hey, Cassie. I have someone I want you to meet!" He said softly, setting her down on the ground. She instantly grabbed his unoccupied hand. He smiled slowly, and led the two girls to a little green bench. Some children returned to their leisures, but most watched the couple and the young girl curiosly. Nick sat on the bench, and Cassie hopped onto it beside him. Sara sat slowly on his other side. "Cassie, this is Sara Stokes, my wife." He said slowly, watching her reaction. "Sara..This is Cassie McBride." Nick turned to Sara for a second, and then back to Cassie. "Hi, Cassie." Sara said nervously. "Hello.." Cassie whispered shyly. "Sara and I are here to find someone who is willing to live with us for a while..." He said slowly, smiling. Cassie looked up at him, then averted her eyes to the dusty ground. "You probobly want a little girl.." She whispered sadly. Nick glanced at a smiling Sara. "No, we want an older girl..." Nick teased. She glanced up hopefully. "Like...me?" She asked timidly. Sara glanced at Nick, and replied softly. "Like you..." Cassie looked at both of them confusedly. "Cassie, how would you like to live with us for awhile?" Nick asked her. She smiled. "I would like that..." She whispered wistfully. Nick stood and offered a hand to each girl. They glanced at each other, grinned, and both accepted them.
After all the paperwork was taken care of, Nick carried a sleeping Cassie out to his Denali, Sara following him, smiling and holding a small bag of Cassie's belongings. Nick set her down in the backseat, and the two new parents sat up front, holding hands and smiling at the angelic little girl sleeping on the seats. Sara grabbed a blanket from under her seat, and covered Cassie. Cassie awoke for a second to snuggle in, before again falling asleep. Sara grinned at Nick. This was actually starting to become fun...
