"Shit," Reyna groaned as she peeled her eyes open. Her alarm was ringing in her ears, and there was a knock on the door. She was late for work. Again. "Fuck."
Reyna turned off her alarm and stood. She walked towards her door, rubbing her eyes. On the other side of that door was an angry ogress that would probably kick her ass all the way from her apartment to the bar. Reyna opened her door.
"Look, Clarisse. I-"
Reyna's words died in her throat as she gasped at the woman across from her. Cold, black eyes seemed to bore into her soul. The woman's face was neutral, but her jaw was visibly clenched like she was holding back a snarl. Not to mention the sheer cold in Reyna's chest, and it wasn't just her heart nearly stopping.
"Hylla…" Reyna whispered in terror. Her older sister maintained her glare and didn't say a word. Reyna felt her brain shutting down. She hadn't talked to Hylla in years. Not since she was ten and told her that she had transformed. When Hylla told their father about Reyna transforming, she ran away.
She didn't stop to say goodbye. She just grabbed the things she needed and ran. Until her father stopped her.
And Reyna killed him.
Reyna's eyes moved down to the small gun pressed against her chest. It was mostly concealed in Hylla's hand, and anyone walking down the hall wouldn't see it. If it was fired, Reyna knew the silver bullet would tear through her heart.
"Take a step back and do not say a word," Hylla ordered in a quiet voice. Reyna swallowed painfully and nodded. She complied, and Hylla stepped forward with her and closed the door behind them. The only thing Reyna heard was her heart deafeningly beating in her ears.
There were some days when she dreamed of seeing her sister again. Other days she had nightmares of it. Either way, Reyna never thought she would see her again.
"Hylla," Reyna practically pleaded. She didn't know what else to say. Of course, she missed her sister, but at the same time, her sister betrayed her first by telling their father about what happened.
"Reyna," Hylla intoned, her voice dripping with hatred and pain.
"Hylla, let's just talk, okay? Let's just talk," Reyna begged. "Don't do anything ra-"
Reyna gasped as she heard a trigger pull. It wasn't from the gun; instead, pain exploded through her upper leg. Reyna looked down and saw the silver crossbow bolt sticking out of her thigh, aimed perfectly at a vein and already spreading poison through her bloodstream.
Reyna's eyes snapped close tightly. She felt the gun bury deeper into her chest, poking right against her heart. The hunter in front of her seethed, "Do you remember Father's lessons?".
"Hylla, please," Reyna pleaded once more. She tensed as she heard Hylla squeeze the trigger. "Stop!"
"Do. You. Remember. Father's. Lessons?" Hylla questioned. Every word she spoke boomed and pulsed through Reyna's body. The werewolf nodded, scared to even peek her eyes open. Part of her always wanted to see Hylla again, to explain what happened to their father. "Speak."
"Yes," Reyna exhaled in a shaky voice. Her mouth felt dry as her heart revolted in her chest. "Hylla."
"Then, you know what we are going to do," Hylla continued as if Reyna wasn't already begging for her life.
"Please," Reyna began. Her body was completely tense, but she knew better than to twitch. Family or not, Hylla would put a bullet through her heart in the blink of an eye. Not to mention the silver in her bloodstream would prevent her from transforming. Her leg was already struggling from the effort of keeping herself standing.
"Shut your fucking mouth," Hylla ordered. She tugged something off of her belt and placed it into Reyna's hands. Reyna gripped the handcuffs. "Walk backward to your room. Now."
Reyna swallowed painfully and carefully walked backward. Her leg quaked from the effort, and she was forced to stare at the ground, and by extension the gun, to make sure she didn't fall. As Reyna made it into her bedroom, she placed her back to the bedpost.
The gun stayed against her chest the entire time, daring her. Reyna glanced back at the post and gripped the handcuffs. She wasn't just going to tie herself up and let Hylla do as she pleased. But, she needed an opening.
"Arms. Now," Hylla ordered next. Reyna slowly raised her hands and linked the cuff on one of her wrists. She slowly lowered her hands.
"Hylla, just listen to me-"
"Shut the fuck up," Hylla cut off as she stabbed the gun sharply into Reyna's chest. "Cuff both your fucking hands. You have ten seconds before I shoot you."
Reyna slowly brought her hands behind her back. Hylla studied her closely. Reyna grabbed the other cuff that was hanging loosely and dragged it around her bedpost. She glanced behind her to line it up with her wrist. Hylla seemed to follow her gaze.
Reyna slammed her forehead directly into Hylla's nose and turned her body away from the gun, pivoting painfully on her injured side. The gun fired, and the bullet grazed past her chest, leaving a thin line of exposed red. Reyna wasted no time in throwing her weight into her sister's chest and sending her crashing to the ground.
"Hylla, just listen to me!" Reyna yelled desperately as she pinned her sister's forearm, trying to tear the gun from her grasp. Hylla's nose was busted and bleeding freely. "You're my fucking sister!"
"And you'll kill me like you killed our father!" Hylla snapped back. Reyna's breath hitched as she stared at her sister. Her eyes shot to the gun that Hylla was fighting her for. Reyna tore it from Hylla's grasp and shoved it away with her hand, sliding it under the bed.
"I had to," Reyna began as she repinned her sister's wrist, and the handcuffs on her wrist clattered against the ground. Her other arm stopped Hylla's free hand as a silver knife was centimeters from her side. Normally, Reyna wouldn't have a problem with trying to hold a human down, but the silver coursing through her veins weakened her.
"You didn't have to!" Hylla yelled. "He was trying to help you!"
"He was going to kill me!"
"Bullshit! He told me that he was going to help you. He was going to keep you safe and help you through it. Instead, you ran. When he stopped you, he had you pinned and was trying to calm you down. And what the fuck did you do? You lured him in and tore his fucking throat out!" Hylla screamed as pure rage threatened her composure. The knife was given precious room to continue its course, finally grazing Reyna's side, and the wolf focused all of her attention on overcoming her sister's grip.
"It wasn't like that!" Reyna hissed as she managed to distance the knife from her. All of her muscles tightened and cramped from the silver.
"I saw you do it," Hylla spat coldly. Reyna's surprise returned. Her grip loosened, and Hylla almost stabbed her again. Reyna immediately shifted her focus down to pin Hylla's wrist with her knee, freeing her arm of the labor.
"Hylla, you have to listen to me. Just fucking listen to me!" Reyna pleaded.
"Shut the fuck up you damn monster!" Hylla cursed. Reyna glared at her and felt her muscles tense in a mixture of anger and pain.
"You took father's spot in Exterminata," Reyna said angrily as realization struck her. "Groomed for the position. All that brainwashing and wasted time on those lessons."
"They took me in after you killed him," Hylla revealed. Her body was still brimming with fury. "Father was teaching us the skills to survive in a world of monsters. Monsters like you."
"Just because I'm not a human doesn't mean I am a monster," Reyna muttered as she tightened her grip on her sister's wrist. Reyna heard the knife clatter against the floor. She heard another clicking noise, but her attention was consumed by Hylla trying to reach the knife again.
"What you did to those cyclopes was the work of a monster," Hylla almost balked out in laughter. Reyna remained silent. "Do you think I wouldn't know it was you?"
"I had to," Reyna finally stated. "They were threatening my friends."
Hylla scoffed. "Just admit it, sister. You're a damn monster!"
Reyna shook her head and felt Hylla attempt to grab the knife again. Hylla jerked her other hand free from Reyna's other grasp. Reyna scurried to restrain her sister's freed appendage, but she came to a sudden stop. Her eyes shot to her own wrist; the other cuff had been attached to her bed frame.
Hylla's free fist cracked against her nose. Reyna's nose crunched, and her eyes watered. She kept her sister's other hand trapped, even as Hylla punched again in the mouth. The free hand grabbed her shirt and hauled her down. The crown of Hylla's head rammed into her nose, shattering it completely.
Blood spewed freely from Reyna's nose, but she didn't let go of the knife. Pure wrath exploded in Hylla's face, and she shot another fist. Reyna's head snapped to the side, and she spat blood out. Hylla growled and tried to grab another knife from her belt.
Reyna reached for Hylla's free wrist; then, she lifted and slammed her knee down onto the hand that was picking the knife up off of the ground. Reyna hissed from the awkward position that she was in. Her knee was pressing into the knife and her sister's hand. The blade was cutting into both of them slowly but surely. Her other hand was across her body to keep Hylla from grabbing anything else from her belt.
"Hylla! Listen to me!" Reyna pleaded. "He left me with no choice!"
"I am going to drag you screaming back to Exterminata!" Hylla swore. "Do you know what we're going to do to you?!"
"I can prove it!" Reyna countered. Hylla grinned. The blood on her face reflected how twisted she no doubt was.
"A live dissection!" Hylla smiled, answering her own question. "You'll be awake for the entire thing!"
"Father told Exterminata about me and was going to hand me over to them!" Reyna snapped. She turned her head and spat out more blood. Tears of pain, and some of frustration, welled in her eyes. "Who the fuck hands a ten year old over to those sick fucks!?"
"You're lying!" Hylla denied.
"I'm not!" Reyna insisted. She tensed as a wave of pain washed over her. The silver was doing a number on her body. Being stabbed in the gut was one thing, having silver deposited directly into her veins was going to be deadly if she didn't get a silver cure within the next day. "Just listen to me! Please..."
Hylla's glare didn't falter. Reyna's entire body continued to tense and cramp from the poison inside her. Her vision blurred for a few moments, and her head drooped, "I have his report. The one he was going to give to Exterminata. It's in my wallet. Please just let me prove it to you."
"You're lying," Hylla repeated, but there wasn't as much conviction in her voice. She sounded unsure. "You're just trying to kill me like you did father."
"I'm not," Reyna countered. "I'm going to grab my wallet. Don't make me regret it."
Reyna loosened her grip on Hylla's hand. Her sister watched her closely. Reyna slowly let go completely. Hylla's fist shot up, and Reyna tried to catch it. She was a split second too late as the fist slammed into her throat this time.
Reyna coughed and gagged. Hylla shoved her into the bed and scrambled away. Reyna quickly clambered to her hands and knees. Her free hand shot to her throat, and she continued to cough miserably.
A boot slammed directly into her ribcage. Reyna cried out from the impact. Her throat burned from the punch, and tears flooded her eyes. Hylla brought her foot back and kicked Reyna again. Then, she did it a third time for good measure.
Reyna collapsed against the side of the bed with Hylla's foot still buried in her ribs. Hylla withdrew her leg and kicked Reyna right in the stomach. She gasped and crashed to the floor.
"I am not going to let my guard down," Hylla promised.
"I could have already killed you," Reyna wheezed. Hylla kicked her again in the side, eliciting another cry of pain. "You're my sister! I don't want to hurt you."
"Werewolves are supposed to be all about their pack," Hylla muttered as she turned away. Reyna slowly got back to her knees. She was still hunched over and did her best to free her wrist from the handcuffs. "Their pack is their family, but you fucking killed Father!"
Hylla's next kick had a running start, and it snapped some of Reyna's ribs. She screamed from the cutting crunch, and Hylla kicked her again in the same spot. Reyna tried to use her arm to protect herself, but her sister stepped away again, "I'm supposed to be your family, but you left me. You killed Father. D...do you know what they did to me?"
"I'm sorry, Hylla. I'm sorry," Reyna wheezed weakly. She sputtered miserably and struggled to breathe. "Father was going to kill me... I'm sorry... What the fuck was I supposed to do, Hylla!? I was so damn scared..."
"You told him, and you promised you wouldn't," Reyna accused. Tears flowed unrestrained from her tired eyes. She buried her head in the floor and tried to quell her whimpering.
"He said he would help you!" Hylla insisted, but it sounded like she was struggling to hold it together as well. "He wouldn't hurt us."
"Hylla, he did," Reyna whispered. Hylla took a shaky breath. "Hylla, I'm your sister. Your family. Please just listen to me."
"No! Exterminata is my family!" Hylla declared resolutely. She kicked Reyna in the gut again, and a strangled cry escaped the werewolf. "They were there for me when you murdered our father! They took me in and gave me a place to live! You destroyed my life! And they helped me pick up the fucking pieces!"
"That's why I'm dragging you back!" Hylla hissed. She grabbed her knife from the ground and forced Reyna to look up. The younger sister tensed as the knife rested against her neck.
"I love you, Hylla. No matter what," Reyna swore as tears blinded her. She closed her eyes tightly. The knife clattered to the ground, and Reyna heard a strangled noise. Her eyes snapped open, and she looked up through her watery vision.
Reyna's jaw fell slack. Clarisse had Hylla wrapped in a chokehold, and she had no chance against the ogress. It didn't take long for Hylla's face to turn red. Then, she stopped struggling.
"Don't kill her," Reyna gasped weakly. As Hylla's eyes closed, her body went limp. Clarisse waited a few more moments and then shoved Hylla to the ground. Then, she moved toward Reyna and broke the handcuffs cleanly at the chain.
Reyna tried to stand using the bed, but she collapsed back to her knees. Her hands cradled her side, tracing two broken ribs. Pained gasps left her, "Fuck…"
"This is your sister," a new voice noted. Reyna slowly looked up at Thalia Grace. The hunter stood at the door, taking in the scene of carnage. "A member of Exterminata."
"D...don't," Reyna begged. She gripped the bed and slowly tried to stand. Her entire body shook from the effort, and her lightheadedness worsened. Her face felt like it was covered in blood, but other than her nose, nothing else in her face was too damaged.
Thalia walked towards Reyna. She kept her hands raised slightly. Thalia spoke, "Hylla called us and warned us about a dangerous, violent werewolf. Is that you?"
"I...I'm not a monster," Reyna said. She gripped her bed with one hand and slowly moved her hand to her thigh. The crossbow bolt was still impaled there. "I'm not v...violent."
Thalia stepped forward, and Reyna tensed. Clarisse moved to Reyna's side and steadied her, "Hey, breathe. I'm going to pull this out."
Clarisse pulled the crossbow bolt out of Reyna's thigh. Thalia spoke, "Is that silver?"
"It is," Clarisse confirmed. Reyna felt her eyes drifting open and close. Her body was weak. What was happening to her? "Do you have a silver cure?"
"No, but I know who does," Thalia answered as she grabbed her phone.
"D...don't call the p...police," Reyna pleaded. Her mouth was dry and tasted of copper. Her veins felt like they were starting to rupture in her body, and her head was swimming.
"You need to sit down," Clarisse began. "We need to call them."
"Jason, I need a silver cure," Thalia said frantically into her phone. Reyna slowly looked at her. "Bring it to Reyna's place. Jason! Questions later! Get your ass over here!"
"Clarisse…" Reyna wheezed. Her next words were heavily labored. "She is part of Exterminata. I...if you call the cops, Hylla w...will go to jail. Those f...fuckers will send assassins after her. She h...hates me, but I l...love her. I can't lose her. Please."
"H...hylla thinks I k...killed our fa...father because I'm a m...monster," Reyna stuttered. She gripped Clarisse as her knees started to feel weak. "I...it was self-defense. I h...had to. Shit. Th...that's a lot of silver..."
"Reyna?"
"Reyna?!"
"Hey, stay with me, Reyna. Stay with me. Thalia, get a first aid kit. Reyna, can you hear me? Just stay with me! We're going to take care of you."
