The sound of a door opening caused Reyna to snap awake from her sleep. She nearly threw herself into a sitting position but managed to relax before she could. Her gaze moved to the front door as Hylla slowly walked inside, gripping her crutches. Her gaze slowly moved around the apartment.
"Hey," Reyna croaked out. She cleared her throat and slowly made it to a half-sitting position with assistance from the couch. Hylla looked at her and gave her a small smile.
"Hey," Hylla returned as she turned on the lights. Reyna groaned from the harsh light in her eyes. "I thought you were a werewolf, not a vampire."
"Shut up," Reyna groaned. She blinked the spots out of her eyes as Hylla walked towards the free chair and sat down. Thalia followed behind with three bags of food and a drink holder.
"Feeling better?" Thalia asked Reyna, and the werewolf shrugged. "Well, try to get some rest. Both of you."
"Thanks," Hylla said. Thalia nodded and sat everything down, then she turned and left the house. Reyna slowly got to her feet and made it to the door, locking it and sighing painfully. Reyna trudged towards the drinks and gave one to Hylla. She took the other and grabbed a bag of food.
"Thalia told us to get the whole menu since her boss was paying for it," Hylla commented.
"How did it go?" Reyna muttered as she handed the bag to Hylla and grabbed one for herself. Reyna slowly sat down and moaned in pain. "Fuck... I should have grabbed my medicine."
"I'll get it," Hylla offered. Reyna didn't have the strength to argue as Hylla got up. "Where is it?"
"Somewhere on the kitchen counter," Reyna replied. Hylla disappeared and came back in record time with the medicine. Reyna took it as she munched on a few fries. "You never told me how it went."
"Shitty," Hylla answered with a shrug. "It turned out to be a lot harder than I thought. Everyone in Exterminata is a piece of shit, but it wasn't easy."
"They were a family to you for years. I get it," Reyna said. She shifted and groaned. "Fuckā¦"
"A fucked up family," Hylla muttered in response. She shook her head and sat on the couch. "I told them everything. Took all day. We still have more to cover. We'll do that in a few days, though. They're going to arrest the police captain soon."
"That's good," Reyna commented, and Hylla nodded. "You doing okay?"
"I don't know," Hylla admitted.
"Want to talk about it?"
"Not really."
Reyna nodded and focused back on her food. As she was done with her fries, Hylla sighed, "I hate myself."
"Because you were part of Exterminata?" Reyna asked softly.
"That's most of it. I also killed the woman I think I was in love with," Hylla admitted sourly.
"Oh."
"Yeah."
Reyna sighed and wasn't sure what else to say. A glance at Hylla showed her older sister staring at the opposite wall. Hylla sighed, "I think I was in love with her. I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"Kinzie and I were partners. We had each others' backs all the time," Hylla muttered. "We had different views, though. I just wanted to kill creatures and get it over with. Well, okay; I tortured them, but not a lot. She liked to spend hours, even a day torturing them."
"So, you did the bare minimum of torturing?" Reyna asked.
"A little more than the bare," Hylla decided after a minute.
"So, the whole dissection thing. Does that count as the bare minimum or..."
"It's a different category," Hylla clarified. She looked at Reyna. "Are you going to be an ass about this?"
"No. Sorry," Reyna dejected. "It's a mix of pain, how I cope, and being an ass. So, sorry again."
"Anyway, Kinzie loved to torture beasts. She thought they were sins on the earth. I guess I was the same, but I had that hammered into my head. I was born into Exterminata; she sought it out," Hylla continued.
"I thought Exterminata only wanted members who were born in the group," Reyna began.
"It changed when Otrera took over. She knew that some of the most extremists out there weren't even a part of Exterminata. So, she wanted to bring them in," Hylla explained. "Kinzie and I clashed on a lot of things, but we worked so fucking well together.
"And, we fucked a lot," Hylla recalled as she looked at Reyna. "It was how we worked through our emotions. We both hated Otrera, too. Kinzie wanted her position for so long, and that's why I told her to just walk the fuck away. But, she didn't. She fucking didn't."
"I'm sorry, Hylla. I didn't mean to make you choose," Reyna muttered.
"Will you shut the fuck up with the apologizes?" Hylla retorted impatiently as she looked at Reyna. There was no hint of humor on her face. "You don't have to keep reminding me that I am a fucking terrible person. I get it."
"Hylla, I didn't mean it like-"
"And then you just fucking forgive me and act like nothing happened!" Hylla ranted as her eyes widened in anger. "I know that you hate me. I know that you wished I never found you."
"Hylla-"
"I hunt werewolves, Reyna. I hunt fucking werewolves, and I enjoyed it. I had so much fun with every werewolf that we found. I dragged it out as long as I could, and every time, I imagined it was you. I imagined I found you and made you pay for killing our father. So why the fuck don't you hate me?!"
Hylla threw herself back at the end of her rant and just stared at the ceiling. She placed both hands to her face. Reyna remained silent, mostly because of how shrill Hylla's voice had gotten. She knew that Hylla was emotionally exhausted from the day. Having to run through all of her past sins and the things that she did was not the therapy that it sounded like.
"I can't help that I'm loyal to a fault," Reyna finally said. A grin split her face as she looked at Hylla. "It's literally in my genes. Werewolves are loyal to their family, and as much as a fucking piece of shit he was, he was right about family. We have to stick together."
"But we didn't!" Hylla snapped as she threw her hands back onto the couch. "Just tell me the truth! Tell me you fucking hate me!"
"I'm not going to lie to you, Hylla. That's not going to make you feel any better either," Reyna lectured. "I do love you, Hylla. I don't hate you or the things you've done because it's the only thing you've ever known. Fuck, it's what you had to do. I know that feeling too well."
Hylla turned on her stomach and buried her face in the couch. Reyna slowly continued, "If it makes you feel better, there are a lot of shitty werewolves out there. The leader of mom's pack, our grandma I guess, found me after I ran from home. She thought I was a mistake and wanted me to fight her for my life. That's how I got these."
Reyna lifted her shirt and pointed to the bandages. Hylla slowly looked at her, "You were just a kid."
"So were you," Reyna countered with a shrug. "We were both kinds in fucked up situations. We did what we had to do, but we're together again."
"Yeah," Hylla muttered, then she sighed. "I'm sorry."
"Nothing to be sorry about," Reyna gently dismissed. "We all have to let it out sometime, and I'm going to be a real asshole around the full moon."
"Do you really need to have sex around the full moon?" Hylla asked after a few moments. "Otherwise you get violent?"
"It's not really that," Reyna denied. "We just have a lot of pent-up energy that gets bad about the time of the full moon. So if you let it build up all month, it leaves you cranky and angry, but you don't get violent because of that. Those who do are just looking for an excuse.
"Sex is a great way to get a lot of energy out quickly," Reyna continued. She shrugged and looked at Hylla. "Kind of gross you're so interested in my sex life."
Hylla's nose crinkled, "I didn't ask you about that."
"That's what it sounded like to me," Reyna retorted, and Hylla rolled her eyes. She looked away not long after.
"Thank you, Reyna. I appreciate... everything. I love you," Hylla whispered.
"I love you too," Reyna returned. "Now, I'm going to eat enough to get sick."
"If you throw up, you might tear your stitches," Hylla warned. Reyna looked at her in surprise. "Yup. Speaking from experience."
"Ew," Reyna cringed. "Alright, I'm going to eat enough to have a stomach ache, but not vomit."
Hylla gave her a small smile. Reyna smiled back and then focused on her food. She only wanted to worry about healing up and then getting back to work. Reyna was not going to miss any more time. Reyna would also enjoy the second chance with her sister, and nothing would get in her way.
