The meal lasted without other incident. Topics of school and design were dropped in favor of praising the chef and discussing flavors. Gabriel smiled, satisfied with his son's knowledge.
'...and the sour flavors are good to add to fatty meals' Adrien poked his meal again. 'It makes fat not get too overwhelming.'
'That's right' Gabriel nodded. 'This is why sour cherries are so good with chocolate and whipped cream.'
'Like in black forest cake?'
'Yes, exactly.'
'And this cake is not a lie' Adrien chuckled. Gabriel smiled, even though he didn't understand the reference. He was just glad his son seemed to feel better. After they finished the food, Gabriel hesitated. Maybe he should offer something?
'Adrien... is there something... something you'd like to do... together?' he asked.
'Maybe we will play piano, the two of us?' Adrien proposed. Back during music festival he enjoyed their duet. Gabriel smiled at him.
'Of course, son. It will be a great exercise and fine pleasure for both of us.'
They sat at the piano and played together. Gabriel felt proud of his son's progress and smiled, seeing that Adrien obviously enjoyed this cultured pleasure. He then went on to bring a sheet of notes to a new piece Adrien didn't play before.
'How about we try this one together?' Gabriel asked. Adrien looked at the notes. The piece seemed challenging, and it was obviously composed to be played in a duet.
'Didn't you tell me earlier that Agrestes are soloists?' Adrien asked with a cheeky smile, pushing his luck. Gabriel sighed.
'That's true. But this... this piece I played with your mother' he said quietly. Adrien watched him wide-eyed.
'I'd love to play it' he said and put his hands on the keys. They played without a word. When the piece was finished, Gabriel smiled.
'I haven't played this piece for ages' he admitted. 'It surely brings back good memories.'
'Yes... I remember this melody now' Adrien admitted. 'Thank you, father.'
'Would you like to play it again?' Gabriel offered. But before the boy could answer, his phone chimed with an akuma alert. Adrien looked from the phone to his father, feeling lost.
'Don't worry, son. The akuma won't hurt us here' Gabriel smiled. He trusted Nathalie wouldn't harm Adrien, directly or not. But Adrien somehow looked even more worried than before.
