Seth couldn't stop laughing at the sight of Kenzie dancing around with the broom. Her champagne blonde ponytail flew from side to side, and her sterling grey eyes sparkled with joy. She wrapped a leg around the broomstick in a weird attempt to pretend it was a pole.
"Ouch, my knee," she complained.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Just getting old," she answered.
"You're 34," he chuckled.
"Still too old for these types of games. Show's over, mister Rollins," she said.
"What a shame. I was just about to get my 1 dollar bills out," he said.
She chuckled and placed the broom up against the wall.
"Why would you bring 1 dollar bills with you on a spacecraft?" She asked.
"I might get lucky," he grinned. "If it hadn't been for that knee, I would have gotten lucky."
She snorted in laughter. He sure was making this space mission way better for her. It wasn't easy being on a spacecraft with her so called boyfriend Dean as a captain, but Seth made it all worthwhile.
"Alright, enough goofing around. We need to clean this place," she said.
A loud bang sounded. They both stared at each other in horror. Dean had fired one of the spacecraft guns.
"What the fuck?" He asked.
"I don't know," she whispered.
A few seconds passed and then Dean's voice came through the speakers so every crew member aboard the spacecraft could hear what he had to say.
"There were enemies approaching. Two of them. One big, one small. I think I got them. They should be behind us now," Dean said. "They were creepy looking. Just floating around without a suit or spacecraft. How is that even possible?"
Seth looked at Kenzie. She seemed lost for words.
"Our mission is to find life in outer space. Not destroy it," he said.
"I know," she said.
"What the fuck is up with your boyfriend?" He asked.
"I wouldn't call him that," she said.
"What? Boyfriend?" He asked.
"We've been over for a long time. At least in my mind. I'm planning on dumping him as soon as we get back home, but for now I must keep up the facade so the other crew members don't know about it. We all need to get back home safe. If I break up with him while we're out here, I'm scared he might flush me through one of the hatches and spin a story about how that thing he just shot came in here, attacked me and killed me," she said.
His jaw dropped. He couldn't even argue against that. He knew Dean had a screw loose. Everyone feared him aboard the spacecraft and did exactly what they were told.
"If you need my help..." He started.
A loud banging started. They both jumped startled and turned to look at the hatches. The sound was coming from one of them. They heard the outer hatch being broken and a loud shriek came from inside the small tunnel.
"Call Dean!" She hissed. "Now!"
He ran to the radio and called Dean who was sitting up in the front of the spacecraft.
"Captain, that thing you just shot," Seth said.
"What about it?" Dean asked.
"It's broken through a hatch. It's inside the tunnel and it's pissed. It's only a matter of time before it breaks through and enters the ship," Seth said.
"I'm on my way," Dean said.
The banging started again. Kenzie moved over to Seth and took his hand. A minute later Dean came flying down the hall. He stopped in front of the hatch and listened to the banging and shrieking.
"I think I pissed it off," Dean chuckled.
"You think?" Seth asked.
"What do we do?" Kenzie asked.
"We're gonna open the hatch and let it inside. We're right next to the secured room. It's created to transport aliens back to earth if we meet someone. Well, we just met someone so they're coming home with us," Dean said.
Dean ran to the wall and grabbed a cattle prod. He ran back to the hatch and glanced over at Seth and Kenzie before hitting the button that opened the hatch. The two aliens came bolting through. The big one was carrying the little one that had fluid running out of its leg. Seth and Kenzie were amazed to find how much these two beings looked like humans. They were taller though, and their hair and eyes were white and transparent. The big one looked at Dean, let out a loud shriek and started to attack. She screamed in pain when electricity went through her a second later.
"Get back, you ugly motherfucker!" Dean growled.
Dean moved the beings towards the secure room. He placed his palm on the screen to unlock the door and then continued pushing them into the room. All along the way the little one left a trail of white fluid on the floor from her leg.
"She's bleeding," Kenzie said. "Their blood is white."
"Who the fuck cares?" Dean snarled.
"I care," Kenzie said.
Kenzie ran into the room before Seth could stop her. She held up her hands to show she was no threat to the aliens. The big one stopped shrieking and stared at Kenzie. She pointed at the little one and hoped she someone how could make the big one understand.
"I can help her," Kenzie said. "I can make it alright. Please, let me help her. I promise I won't hurt her. You gotta trust me."
The big one let out a low growl but it seemed like she understood. Kenzie slowly moved towards the little one who was whimpering in pain.
"Is she your daughter?" Kenzie asked. "Don't worry. I'll fix her."
She heard the door shut behing her. She whipped her head around and saw that Dean had closed it. She ran to the door and looked at him through the glass. She could hear his heavy breathing through the small air holes in the middle of the glass.
"Open the door. She won't hurt you. She just wants her daughter healed," Kenzie said.
"I can't do that," Dean smirked. "My mission was to find life and bring it back. Thank you for helping me secure two specimens."
"You can't keep me in here. I'll die without water. You won't make it back to earth in time," Kenzie said.
"That's a price I'm willing to pay. See it this way. You sacrificed your life for a greater good. Besides, our bosses will be much happier with dead aliens than live ones. It'll make it so much easier to cut them open and look inside," Dean said.
"Dean," Seth said lowly. "You can't do this. She's your girlfriend."
"I don't care much about her anyway," Dean shrugged. "Now would probably be a good time telling you I cheated on you several times. Anyway, have fun in there with your new friend. If you ask nicely, she might put you out of your misery fast."
Dean walked away from the door. Seth was left speechless. He stared at Kenzie who turned around and walked back to the little alien with determined steps. She picked up a scalpel and looked up at the big alien.
"We're on our own, mama," she said. "I don't know how you work but I won't make it out of here alive. I refuse to let your little one die though. I fucking hope you don't need water to survive. And if you get out of here, do me a favor and slice Dean in half for me."
She leaned over the little alien's leg and started digging out the bullet in her leg. The little one cried out in pain but allowed Kenzie to work. She finally got the bullet out and lifted her head to see the mother alien was right there next to her. She placed a hand on Kenzie's chest and gently pushed her away. She spat on her finger and ran the saliva over the little one's wound. Kenzie's eyes widened when she saw the saliva worked as glue so she didn't have to stitch up the wound.
"Wow, that's amazing," she said. "I bet you heal super fast too."
"Kenzie!" Seth called.
Kenzie looked over at the glass door. Seth was still standing there. She walked over and looked at him.
"I can't get you out," he said.
"I know. Only Dean's palm print opens this door," she said. "He might start a war of worlds with this. When they don't return to wherever they came from, their kind will come search for them. There's not a damn thing we can do to stop him. He's insane."
He placed his hands on the glass and started crying.
"It's not fair," he said.
"That's what I get for dating a psychopath," she said.
"I love you, Kenzie," he said.
"I know," she smiled sadly. "I've always known, Seth. For what it's worth, I love you too. That's why I was gonna leave Dean. I don't love him anymore. I love you. I was gonna tell you once we were back home."
"It's not fair!" He growled.
"It is what it is. We gotta accept it," she said.
"I refuse!" He snarled.
He banged his fists on the glass in anger and gritted his teeth. His cheeks were still wet but no more tears were falling. Anger had taken over.
"I'm getting you out of there," he said.
"You can't," she said.
"No, listen to me," he said. "One way or another, I'm getting you out of there. I swear on my life."
He walked away from the glass door. She watched him go until she couldn't see him anymore. It only took a few seconds before he was gone. She turned around and looked at the two aliens. They might not be able to speak to each other but they understood each other well. Three women trapped in a room together with no escape.
"It's..." She swallowed nervously. "It's gonna be alright. Seth will find a way. He can be very stubborn. I trust him with my life."
She blew out her breath and nodded. She was trying to convince herself too that what she was saying would end up coming true. That Seth would come and save them somehow.
"It's gonna be alright," she whispered. "I hope."
