Barry opened his eyes. He was a... kid! An 11 year old to be exact, standing in a large room, along with 5 other children. A man wearing a fancy looking tunic and breeches. They looked up at the mans appearance and Barry, along with the other kids, followed him out of the room. By now, Barry had gotten used to the feeling that tapped into his skull when the info he would need for a new world slid into his head, natural as could be.
By now Barry had so much information, he could probably be an Eye of Agamotto in himself, not even counting his special ability to find information about someone, even down to what he was craving for dinner tonight just by looking at someone. Apparently, he had ended up in the story Ranger's Apprentice. What was special about this story though, was that it took place in the medieval era and there weren't just humans. The group of children was made up of Alyss, the aspiring diplomat and Horace, the arrogant bully who plagued Will for a few months before Barry found out and with one of the best death glares to ever exist, put a stop to it, as everyone knew to do anything that would not encure Barry's wrath, another kid and wanted to be in the Battleschool so he could be a knight. Then there was Will who wanted to be a Battleschool student as well, but really wouldn't fit the criteria of big and strong. Barry's own cover also matched Will's, a boy who wanted to be a knight, but would never be able to fulfill his dreams. Then there was Jenny, a pretty kind of chubby girl who wanted to become a cook and was already very good at it. George was the last of the bunch, an aspiring scribe who would most definetly be going to Scribeschool. Barry and Will would most likely end up working at the farms, a default if no one chooses them. Barry could already feel his excitement slip away.
The kids followed the pompous looking man through a hallway to another large room. They were in a castle after all, Castle Redmont of the Redmont Fief of Araluen. This room was filled with small beds, ones that Barry had to remind himself would actually fit him, despite their size. After all, he was used to being an adult, but here he was, revisiting his preteen years. The kids went to sleep with little fit and woke up to the sun. It was just so much brighter than Barry remembered. They got dressed and ready for Choosing Day. Barry was glad he didn't have to use the Medieval version of brushing his teeth. Then they waited.
"ALL RIGHT, CANDIDATES! THIS WAY! AND LOOK LIVELY!" hollered Martin, the soft hearted Baron's secretary. They shuffled towards Martin where he led them in single file into the Baron's study. The Baron himself was a large man who might not atone his size all to muscle. He was one of the best knights in the realm. The group stood in size order, going Horace, Alyss, George, Jenny, Barry and then Will. Jenny, being kind hearted as she was, knew that Will didn't like being the smallest and tried to switch places with him, but the secretary caught it and made them switch. The Baron sent Martin out to get the Craftmasters, sort of mentors and also their bosses they would be staying with for the next few years. One by one, the children made their way through getting all of their wanted crafts except for Will and Barry. They basically sulked in the huge fig tree that they could see into the Baron's window through. Will suddenly perked up.
"Hey Barry."
"Yeah?"
"What if we just... took a look at the paper? The one Ranger Halt wrote on?" Barry suddenly sat up too.
"Yeah, that could work. But what if we got caught?"
"We won't. We're both good enough to sneak in and get out without anyone seeing us."
"I don't know..."
"Oh come on! Don't you want to see whether we're condemned to the farms for the rest of our lives?"
"Okay, fine. You got me interested. Let's go late at night."
"Wait, why late?"
"The guards will be tired and less likely to spot us. After all, we don't even know what they'll do to us if we get caught this time around."
"Good thinking. So who's gonna climb the tower?"
"I'm thinking both of us. We should move together because if one of us is found, they'll look back at who's actually sleeping and find the other missing."
"You're really thinking this through, aren't you."
"I pride myself on my complex thought process."
"Okay, so we leave at midnight." They made their way back to the castle unspotted, merely materializing inside the common room where they gave George a jump scare when he realized they were standing there.
"Don't scare me like that! You guys are gonna give me a heart attack long before I reach adulthood!" They also survived Horace's tormenting, though Alyss and Jenny served as a good buffer. Everyone had the hots for Jenny, even Horace himself. When midnight finally came, Will and Barry sneaked out of the castle and into the courtyard, avoiding the night guards expertly. Let's just say sneaking out isn't exactly weird.
"Okay, now we sneak across to the Baron's tower, climb it, and look at the paper." said Will.
Barry looked towards him and said, "Are you sure about this Will?" Will took a deep breath and exhaled.
"Yes, I am. Now, let's move." Will and Barry used the moving shadows of the trees to move silently across the seemingly empty field, matching into them perfectly. They reached the door of the tower where a fat, lazy sergeant stood guard in front of the door. He posed no real risk as Barry bumped Will onto the wall before climbing up himself. The inside of the walls might be smooth, but the outside had many handholds the two used expertly to break in through the large bay window. They approached the desk carefully and silently, moving with caution. Will was about the reach out and flip the paper over when a large hand grabbed Will's wrist. He was shooketh while Barry, first tensed up and relaxed when he realized it was Halt.
"I knew you two would do this. Now let's see what the Baron has to say to this, shall we?" He grabbed the twos arms and guided them through a door where the Baron sat waiting. They sat down while Halt stood behind them.
"Now, is there anything you would like to say?" Will started on something but ultimately went the same path of Barry, bowing his head and accepting whatever punishment he would get.
"Good. You just passed the second test."
"Wait, this was a test?"
"Yes, read the paper." Will's fingertips hovered uncertainly over the paper. "It's safe. Don't worry." Will turned it over. There it read:
The boys Will and Barry have the potential to trained as Rangers.
I will accept them as my apprentices.
