Eren blinked, feeling a little disoriented as he floated outside a large entrance. What…? Where am I? Eren felt himself gulp, a shiver of fear running down his spine as he swam forward. Eren tried to stop, to take a moment to study his surroundings but he did no such thing. He felt wrong, foreign in the body he was in. What's going on? Why can't I move? Eren watched as he approached another entryway, this time smaller. Shards of crystal bordered the entry as well as two guards that Eren didn't recognize. His body vibrated with excitement upon seeing the blonde guard to the right, and his heartfelt like it would pound right out of his chest.
"W-w-we request audience w-w-with the k-king." A voice that wasn't his suddenly spoke up, his lips moving yet he had no control of what he was saying. "The request is denied. The king has ordered to be undisturbed during this time." The guard on the left spoke, the two crossed spears to black the entrance should they try to dash for it. "B-but sir-" He tried again.
"Kudret, we have our orders." The guard on the left said gently, giving him a half-smile but keeping his spear in the way. Eren felt his body flush at the tone, and he found himself even more confused at the situation.
"And I have mine. Move aside." The voice suddenly ordered from behind him, and the guards looked at one another for a moment. "What orders do you have?" The one on the right, Savaş, asked. Why do I know his name? "I am to report any news on humans as soon as they occur." The powerful voice of what is clearly a woman said behind him. What the fuck? Is… is this a dream or something? This is so odd. The guards looked at one another, before hesitantly bringing up their weapons. "You may enter." The one on the left said stoically, and as they began to swim through, he couldn't help but notice Savaş wink at him, blue eyes gleaming with an emotion Eren couldn't place. He ducked his head in embarrassment, cheeks burning red while the woman chuckled behind him. Am I… Kudret? Who is this? Why am I inside someone?!
"S-sire?" Kudret nervously spoke up, flinching at the heated glare his king turned to him. While usually King Emirhan was an imposing figure, scars and big muscles enough intimidation for most of the royal guard, today he was minuscule. The obsequy for his now late wife and Queen, Aysu, really took a toll on the king. His form was small in the throne he once filled with his mighty presence, his eyes red and body sallow. The stages of grief were not kind to the king.
"I am not to be disturbed. Leave at once!" The king ordered, holding his chest and curling into himself further. The young guard was about to speak up, but the mermaid behind him came forward. "My King, it was I who ordered him to bring me to you." The oracle swam into the fading light of the throne room. Her dark skin covered in flowing tattoos that glowed a gentle turquoise with white hair that flowed elegantly behind her. Her whole being emanated power, her light blue eyes filled with the knowledge that none before her had ever possessed. The King sighed and rested against his throne, knowing that anything Derya put her mind would not be deterred.
"What is it, Derya?" Emirhan murmured, tail limply twitching and eyes falling back to his hands. Derya composed herself, swimming up to her king much to the shock of the young guard. Emirhan barely stirred when she came to his side, hand grabbing his shoulder and pulsing some soothing magic through the broken king. He let out a groan, body desperate for any sort of comfort from the torture he has felt for the past week. The light traveled about his form, replenishing the muscle that had been wasting away with all his weight from not eating. He wanted to stop her, to tell Derya to leave him be, that maybe death would be better than living here without his mate.
"What would Aysu think if she saw you now?" Derya suddenly spoke, hand smoothing over his long brown hair. Emirhan went stock still, eyes wide and finally looking into her own. "Would you want her to do this if it had been reversed? To starve herself and wallow in self-pity? Wishing for death with every fiber of her being?"
"No…" His voice was small, a pitiful groan of what it used to be. Coming back to reality a little more, he pushed her hand away and sat up, glaring up at the oracle.
"Why are you here, Derya?" He ground out, feeling better with her aiding magic. She sighed at his stubbornness but decided it was not worth the fight. "You ordered me to bring you news involving humans as soon as they occurred, my king." She said steadily. Emirhan instantly growled, his fists clenching and jaw popping with just how hard he clenched it.
"Are they not satisfied with those they already killed?! Have they come back to murder more of our people?!" He growled angrily, a dark aura surrounding him. Derya backed up, a little surprised at such an intense reaction.
"No, there is no immediate danger. Their boats have been absent since…" She didn't finish, not wanting to anger him further. "I had a rather unusual dream. I believe it to be a vision of the future." The oracle explained, continuing when the king nodded his head.
"In this dream, I saw your great-grandchild… it seems that-"
"Eren!"
The prince woke with a start, wildly looking around before finding Armin beside his bed. Fuck. At least it's not Mikasa.
"Armin! You scared me!" What an odd dream.
"Where have you been!? The king had been searching for you since you left yesterday! No matter where we searched no one knew where you were!" Armin started hitting Eren with a necklace when he just grumbled and turned away. That got Eren's attention real quick.
"OW!"
"Don't ignore me Eren I was really worried about you!" Armin shouted, blonde hair shaking with every erratic movement he made. Eren sighed but sat up, rubbing his eyes and looking at his best friend. Armin was still wearing some of the jewelry from last night's dinner as well as a band of coral on his chest. He must've stayed up all night. Eren felt guilty for a moment, before the exhilaration of where he had been returned to him. "Armin you will never believe what I did yesterday."
"Huh?"
Eren said it all, sparing no detail as he recounted the ship, the statue, the fire and even going to land. Armin listened intently, eyes wide and mouth gaping in shock. It wasn't until he started to talk about Levi and his kiss that he faltered.
"Armin… there's something I want to tell you. You must never, ever tell anyone this. Ever." Eren insisted seriously, Armin seeing this and nodded, putting a hand on his childhood friend's shoulder in camaraderie.
"Not a single soul will know." He vowed. Eren sighed in relief but was still hesitant. He had never told anyone, not even himself about his resentment to mating women. It took him so long, much concealing of his inner thoughts and feelings finally unable to hold now that that human, his Levi, showed him exactly what he had been missing. No more lying to myself. Perhaps the humans are ok with it, maybe that's why Levi was so open about it. Why can't we be the same?
"Armin… I don't like women." He said solemnly. Armin merely kept staring, eyebrows furrowing as he studied Eren's face.
"Ah… like… all women?" He asked, Eren nodding slowly as the realization of what Eren was saying dawned on his best friend. Where Eren thought he would see disgust, hatred or at the very least confusion, he saw only elation. Armin was nearly shaking with excitement as he surged forward and embraced the startled prince. A lot of gibberish was leaving his mouth that Eren had no hopes of comprehending, but when Armin finally pulled back he saw him smiling.
"Armin?"
"Me too. Eren, how long have you known?!" Armin squealed, Eren now dumbfounded by this information. Armin too!?
"Well… really since before mom died but… I never admitted it to myself until yesterday. So… you like men too?" Eren admitted, Armin's blonde locks swirling rapidly with his nodding.
"Yep! I've known since I was 14 but couldn't say anything cause of the laws. I was worried you would hate me or something so I never said anything…" He trailed off, giving him a bright smile. "But I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one!" Eren chuckled and decided now that that was out of the way to continue his story.
"Anyway, we talked for a while and it was great. We have so much in common! He's a prince being forced to marry, and… well… we're both attracted to men…" Eren felt warm remembering the kiss they shared. I want another.
"So he's definitely gay then?" Eren nodded, in fact very sure that he was gay he'd stake his life on it.
"Oh yeah. He told me multiple times. And… we mayhavekissed." Eren said quickly, slapping a hand over Armin's mouth when he squealed loudly. "Armin!"
"You kissed!? How was it? Was he good at it? Did he bite you? How long? How many?!" Armin spouted off. Eren preceded to tell him all about it, cheeks as red as a crab by the time he changed the subject again.
"Also… when we touched it felt like electric." Eren revealed and Armin dramatically swooned onto the bed, hand over his forehead and heart.
"Oh! How romantic!" He giggled when Eren hit him with his pillow.
"I'm serious! I thought it was me letting out electric currents! When he grabbed me it felt like I was shocked by an eel! Then again when I saved him… and then on the beach, he was giving me water and our hands touched. I could see the electricity racing up our arms. It was strange. It didn't hurt, but it made me feel… weird. I don't know." Eren explained but ultimately had no idea why it happened.
"Hmm…" Armin hummed aloud, "I feel like I've heard of that before… I'll do some research when I have the time. But you said there was a statue of Levi on the ship right?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"Well let's go look for it!"
As Armin dragged him past guards and servants, they all stared at the rambling mer and the beaming prince.
Levi, I will be a part of your world.
~ TLM ~
"Prince Levi? Would you like to take your lunch now?" A voice called out through the locked door. Lying still on the large bed, Levi could do nothing but sigh. Another maid, no doubt sent by Erwin. The raven-haired prince merely turned over, staring out the window and into a bright blue sky.
"Leave it outside the door." Was all he said, eyes fluttering shut when he heard the clink of silverware and china being set down on the lush carpet outside his bedroom. It's been two days since his ship caught fire. Four days since he was saved by the most beautiful man he'd ever seen.
Four days since he talked and flirted with said beautiful man.
Four days since he saw that beautiful green tail glimmering under the afternoon sun.
Four days since he held Eren.
Four days since he kissed him.
Four days since he actually felt happy.
Four. Fucking. Days.
It might as well have been a month with the anxiety he felt. When he felt anything at all. Levi doesn't know why, but the thought of doing anything was painful. Why do anything at all if I don't get to see Eren anyway? Why when I'll have to marry a woman who will never be as beautiful, as kind, as talkative as Eren? As soon as they took him away from the beach, the painful squeeze of sorrow would not leave him. He couldn't sleep, he didn't eat, and he didn't bathe. He only ate a little when he went to the beach, sitting on the shore in between the rocks, right where he and Eren had been. He waited.
And waited.
Erwin and everyone else had dragged him to Hange. He had been thrilled when he saw him, after all, everyone told him that the prince had died. Hange had seen that he had what looked like a healing bruise on his shoulder, which is when he admitted that he had been saved by a merman. Absolutely nobody believed him. The fake smiles, the concerned looks on their faces all told him the same thing. 'We think your absofuckinglutely nuts.' They found no signs of a concussion and continued to ask him how he got back in roundabout ways. Levi knew then that he was alone in this, he had to find Eren on his own. As soon as Hange gave him a clean bill of health he practically ran to the beach, Hange on his heels the entire way, bothering him with weird questions when all he wanted was to see his merman again. He stayed there for hours, pacing, sitting, walking, even singing what little he remembered of the song Eren sang for him. He felt a warmth whenever he sang it, one that reminded him of Eren's touch, so he sang the same few lines over and over, hoping it would somehow bring the merman back. It didn't, and even as the moon rose high he still sat there, covered in saltwater and sand, dazedly singing Eren's song for him.
Eventually, Erwin carried him inside, ignoring Levi's commands of letting him stay to wait for the merman. He stayed in his room until the morning, watching the sunrise over the sea. He left for the beach and waited there all day again. Throughout the day, Petra and Oluo, Gunther, Eld, Hange, Erwin, Marco, and Nanaba came out to talk to him. Most of it was trying to convince him to eat, which he did when they brought him food. The other part was trying to convince him to go inside, or that mermaids simply don't exist and he dreamed the whole thing up. The sun began to set and this time, Erwin and Mike were the ones to scoop up the prince and take him to his room. Erwin them ordered for Levi to be banned from the beach, despite Levi's pleas.
So Levi complied. Not once has he been to the beach, but he also hasn't left his bedroom. Levi knew they were concerned, that they were doing what they thought best. But all Levi could think about were enchanting green eyes and a beautiful wide smile.
He felt in pain constantly, his head hurt and his heart felt heavy. He had no motivation to do anything, no drive, no want. It scared him, how helpless he felt, and he wondered if Eren had placed a spell on him. But then he remembered how innocent he seemed, how honest, and knew he would never do such a thing. The thought of never seeing him again made him cry a few times, but Levi's accepted by now that Eren had him absolutely whipped and he wasn't even there to see it. Hange came to check on him over the last two days. He didn't say as much as he did before, merely checking his vitals and getting him to eat a little before leaving.
Levi lay there wondering for hours on end, fluttering between consciousness and unconsciousness, if perhaps he fell in love with the merman. It sure felt like it, having had crushes before, but this felt deeper, more important, and much stronger than any mere crush. He thought it impossible to fall in love with someone in less than a day, but then again, he also thought that mermaids didn't exist so what does he truly know? Levi stirred when he heard movement outside his door, the sound of footsteps and the clanking of china and silverware.
"Prince Levi? Would you like to take your dinner now?" It was Petra this time, her voice unusually subdued as opposed to her always cheery self. Levi slumped into his pillow, eyes blankly staring ahead at the wall. He didn't answer. He didn't need to. They both knew he wouldn't be eating tonight.
He heard her sigh on the 0ther side, placing it down in front of his door.
"He might be asleep." Her voice was much quieter, clearly not trying to be heard from the other side but Levi heard it loud and clear.
"This is very worrying… should we force him to eat?" Erwin's voice suggested, Levi not even reacting to the implication. His stomach panged, hunger evident, but he felt no need to fetch the food.
"... That would only be a temporary solution. He's very depressed, dangerously so. What's worse is that he's showing signs of withdrawal." Hange's voice suddenly piped in. Are they having a fucking party out there or something?
"Withdrawal?!"
"Depression, loss of appetite, insomnia, loss of interest and pleasure in activities… he's started sweating and shaking a bit as of this morning as well. We all know Levi, he showers daily and cleans twice a week. He has yet to bathe without one of us forcing him too. He's not ok right now." He listed off, Levi looking down to see that he indeed was covered in sweat. Huh. When did that happen?
"And this is over that mermaid, right? What do we do?" Petra asked, worry clear in her voice. Easy, get Eren to come back.
"Well… I can try giving him some different medications, but they could also worsen his condition… Erwin. We need to find whoever it was that rescued him. He is adamant that he was rescued, we should focus on finding him so Levi can see him again."
"Hange, he says it's a mermaid! Where the hell are we going to find a mermaid!? They don't exist!"
Yes, they do.
"Levi seems to think otherwise. Perhaps it really was just a guy who saved him, but Levi thought he was a mermaid. Whatever it is, we need to find him. Levi has either fallen in love with him or is obsessed with the idea of him. His body is failing fast Erwin. I've never seen him like this." Hange paused, the silence deafening in the hollow room.
"Have the guards search for anyone who matches the description of the man and brought in to meet Levi. We can't waste any more time." Hange ordered, Levi perking up at the idea. Why didn't I think of that?! While Levi was 99% sure he didn't make up the idea that Eren was a merman, there is still that 1% chance that he was just a man that Levi mistook as a merman. Which means he could be walking around right now, within reach. Eren.
"What if we find no one? What if the man, mermaid or otherwise, simply never existed?" Erwin asked, and Levi couldn't help but feel the now familiar feeling of stinging in his eyes at the thought. No, I'm not crazy. He exists. He's real!
"I don't know, to be honest. My worst fear is that he might become suicidal. Or if not suicide, a broken heart. If we find him, he needs to be debriefed on the seriousness of this situation. Right now we need to hope like hell that he does exist and that he will accept Levi. Finding him isn't enough, he clearly has complete control over Levi's mind. I'm afraid that if he were to criticize Levi in any way that he'll take it harshly and hurt himself."
"... I understand. We'll need to get a full description of him then and I'll notify every person in the kingdom." Erwin said calmly, resolutely. Levi felt his heart lighten, hopeful that maybe they'll find his Eren.
Levi was about to stand, wanting to help any way he could when the clinking of china and the door opening drew his attention. Hange stood there, a usual white lab coat and goggle-like glasses strapped to his head. Long hair up in a messy ponytail. He wasn't wearing shoes, and Levi could tell that he had been on the beach based on the and crusted on his feet. He said nothing as he quietly shut the door and made his way over to a large chair parked next to the bed from his many other visits. He wordlessly placed the tray on the bedside table and leaned forward.
"Levi. What is the name of the merman you saw?"
"Eren. He's the prince of… shit. I can't remember the kingdom." Levi sighed, feeling like a failure for forgetting such a simple fact. Hange nodded, reaching up around his neck and pulling out a shell on a chain. It was a rather large nautilus shell that was about the size of his fist. It was smooth and polished with beautiful brown stripes around the spiral surface. There were a few odd, human-made markings carved into the brown stripes, but otherwise, it looked like a normal shell. He recognized it because he saw Hange wearing it a few months ago, but when he asked about it Hange merely smiled and said it was from a 'special friend'.
"Merpeople exist." He murmured, Levi's breath hitching at the sudden revelation. Does he believe me?
"You believe me?"
Hange nodded, taking off the necklace and placing it on the comforter.
"It's hard to believe, but I've met one too." What!? His shock was evident because Hange laughed. "And he happens to be Eren's best friend." Levi couldn't believe his ears. Eren's best friend? He's met a mermaid and it was Eren's best friend?!
"Explain!" He immediately ordered, attentive to his friend as he readied himself for a story.
"Nearly a year ago I had been walking on the beach looking for some new specimens for some research on clams and there link to fertility in women when I heard some noises. At first, I thought it was a seal or maybe a beached dolphin. But when I looked there was this blonde boy bleeding next to the rocks. He had been trying to climb them and fell. I ran over to help, trying to bring him farther to shore but he immediately began screaming things like 'Please don't kill me' 'I don't taste good at all' and other weird things. I thought maybe he was hallucinating and continued to drag him. He had been in a little pool, so I didn't see the tail until I pulled him to shore. To say I was shocked was an understatement. Anyway, I tended to his hands and we got to talking.
"He was very smart and loved learning, so we shared information about our worlds to one another. When he finally said he had to go, we agreed to meet in a weeks time, and soon it became normal for us to meet every Wednesday. He told me a lot about his best friend, Eren, but he never mentioned him being a prince! When you were telling us about Eren, I thought surely they couldn't be the same and was trying to contact Armin to see if they were but with no luck." Hange explained, gently rubbing the shell. Levi merely sat there, eyes wide as he took in this information.
"Why didn't you tell me before?" He asked.
"Armin made me promise to never tell anyone. Humans are taught to the merpeople as being these violent, cannibalistic, greedy, mindless assholes who wouldn't bat an eye at torturing a mer and selling the parts. Which, I can't lie can be a descriptor for a lot of people. So I agreed to never tell anyone. But that aside, this is what I'm trying to show you." Hange held up the shell. "I've been trying to communicate with Armin to get you and Eren together again."
"What!?"
"Yeah, on our third meeting, Armin gave me this shell. This was for communication, in case he couldn't come or he needed me to come right away then he would signal me through this. It works the other way as well. When he needs me then I can hear the sounds of the ocean, it's hardly noticeable unless you listen closely. It sounds like ocean waves hitting the shore and dying out. A relaxing sound if you will. It will start to glow if I leave it alone for too long, growing brighter and brighter until I answer it. If he can't come then it sounds like the ocean during a storm, waves crashing against a rocky cliff, not so relaxing. The sound is quiet though and will not stop until I turn it off. Like this," Hange clarified, demonstrating by swirling his finger around the naturally indented curl of the shell.
"And if I need him then I merely have to stick my finger in the hole and touch the back. And if I need to cancel then I have to blow into the shell. I don't know how it works and every time I ask he just says magic. But anyway, my plan is to call Armin and then ask him to bring Eren next time." Levi's eyes shot up, surprise evident in his face, a hope he dared to entertain blooming in his chest.
"Bring… Eren?" He asked hesitantly, wanting to believe more than anything. Hange smiled and nodded.
"Yes, bring Eren. They are basically like brothers and Armin once said he would like to bring Eren to meet me, but he had something come up and he never ended up telling him. It makes much more sense now knowing that he is the prince of Eldia." Hange muttered the last part, jumping a little in surprise when he felt Levi grab his hand. His silver eyes were shining, and he looked vulnerable, a look Hange had never seen before in their many years of friendship.
"Will you tell me about him? I know some… but…" He trailed off but thankfully Hange understood.
"Of course! Armin had told me he had high status, which I guess is the whole being a prince thing, and that he was an exceptionally skilled hunter. He likes human things and has a whole treasure trove of all sorts of shit. Based on what Armin told me, there are probably millions of dollars worth of artifacts, gold, and jewelry in that cave of his. His mom is dead, just like Armin's parents, and Eren was the one who ultimately convinced his father to keep Armin as a 'tablet holder', similar to a bookkeeper or historian I guess. Oh! I'm assuming your plans upon finding Eren is courting right?" Hange asked, smirking when Levi immediately nodded with no hesitation.
"Because the men can have kids right?"
Another nod.
"Well, I'll shed some light on that. Armin told me what he could, but there are holes in the story that he can't seem to figure out. Eren's great grandfather banned homosexual pairings. Armin isn't sure if they were common or not, as there is nothing in their archives mentioning any homosexual behavior of any sort. It's been rather strictly upheld, with many mers being banished to 'the trench'. I had asked what it was but Armin seemed a little shaken up just thinking about it, so I didn't push it. We'll just assume it was bad."
"So they're homophobic? Explains why he was acting like that…" Levi murmured, looking back up and nodded for him to continue.
"Very homophobic. It's funny, because males can be pregnant, and females can impregnate. So really, the only difference between any merperson is the amount of estrogen or testosterone. If Eren wanted to get pregnant, he'd have to have penetrative sex enough times that his womb would be activated and ready for fertilization. Females have to be the penetrators a couple of times in order for their bodies to create sperm. It's a very interesting development as it means that no matter the ratio between men and women, there will always be enough bearers to keep the species going."
"So… If I wanted to have kids with Eren…" He trailed off, a bright blush spreading across his pale cheeks.
"You'd have to fuck the shit out of him for a couple of days yes precisely." hange deadpanned and Levi sighed. Leave it to Hange.
"Oh! Also, they have a rather interesting mating habit. It's a mix of instinctual and traditional. The two mates will swim around the other in a dance of twirling, Armin demonstrated one time it was very beautiful. They do this without touching, and then usually the female will come forward, and bite the ever-living shit out of the other's neck and shoulders." He mimed the action, teeth clacking while Levi stared wide-eyed. Bite?
"Doesn't that hurt?"
"Like a bitch. However, at least one of the marks will scar, showing that the mer is taken. I think Armin said it showed your mate how much trust they have in you. One wrong bite could mean bleeding out or damaging the jugular after all. Apparently it's a new thing among younger mers to scratch the other instead of biting. They'll usually scratch around the stomach in long swipes. It's gruesome, but kind of sweet in its own way. 'I love you, please don't maim me.'" Hange laughed and Levi cracked a small smile. Would Eren rather bite, or scratch? Would he expect me to do the same for him? I really can't imagine hurting him though…
"It's very serious stuff because of mers mating for life. Once they've mated they aren't able to feel attracted to any other for the rest of their lives. A gift, for they know their love won't cheat on them. But also a curse, since rape is counted as mating, and if their mate dies they can never form another connection for as long as they live." Hange explained solemnly. So Eren won't make this type of decision lightly. That's good, I know I wouldn't want to be with someone who might leave me later. For him, he'd have no choice.
"Please call Armin. I… I miss Eren." Levi admitted, turning to look out the window and to the sea that sparkled from the setting sun.
"I have, Armin must be busy. They live a couple of hours away so he has to do these meetings as day trips. But, Levi. You need to take care of yourself. You need to bathe, eat, sleep, live. I know you miss him, but how would you feel if Eren was doing the same thing?" Hange chastised gently. Levi did imagine, Eren's tan skin pale, his eyes tired and his smile nonexistent. Levi felt his heartbreak a little, not wanting his merman to feel even remotely as shit as he did.
"You're right." He said softly, eyes downcast, studying his hands as if they were the most interesting thing in the world. Hange let out a huff and gently patted his shoulder.
"I know I am. Eat, and then shower. We can go to Erwin together and you can give him Eren's description. Even if we know that he's not on land, it'll give him peace of mind that he's helping." Hange affirmed and Levi nodded his assent. That's right. I need to take care of myself, if I keep doing this, Eren will come back to see a pitiful prince and leave. I need to stay strong, and trust he'll come.
Eren… you will be a part of my world.
Awee I think Levi deserves a nice big hug! Seriously there is some shit gonna go down next chapter and I think Eren and Levi deserve a fucking hug. But don't worry! There will be riren cuddle time! and some sexy times. I'll have to add new tags! #BlowJobs
Fact: Having an orgasm at least 3 times a week cuts in half the likelihood of coronary heart disease.
XD OMG I'm going to have Hanji tell that to Levi or Eren and then Levi is going to get all worried and make sure Eren orgasms trice a week! XD I can see it now! Hanji is going to be the shipper of this fic, continuously running her sexual experiments on the two. huehue (i)
