Drift POV

I knew it would have been unlikely I'd be telling Lighting — and the others — the nightmares stopped. Instead, I'm telling Lightning to leave Jamie alone as it was a rough night. Lighting worries it'll be months before these nightmares stop. I'm hoping it'll be a couple of weeks, but there's no way to know. Lightning asks if we can go out when Jamie wakes up.

"At least outside," Cogman suggests before I can say anything, "on the deck."

At least it's easy to prepare if Jamie needs to have an infusion going. Cogman tells us to let him know if he's making breakfast or lunch for Jamie when she wakes up.

"Come on, let's go for a drive while we wait," Crosshairs suggests.

I catch Rangeblade walking with them as they walk down the hall. I'd go with them, but I don't know if Jamie will panic.

"He's going to be mad," I hear Lightning two hours later.

"It's a nice treat."

Oh boy, what did you buy, Crosshairs?

The two walk in the room, Crosshairs carrying a box.

"Who's going to be mad?" I ask once they walk into the room.

"Cogman," Crosshairs says.

"He probably will be as well, but I meant Drift," Lightning corrects.

"How do you know he'd be careful with what Jamie eats? I mean, look at that," Crosshairs says, pointing to the box of Kitkat.

I show him the box that looks barely touched.

"I don't think she cares about these, which is odd."

"She's still recovering from injury," Lighting points out though it's clear she's thinking Jamie is slowly refusing to eat.

We wait twenty minutes before Jamie wakes up. I let Lightning approach the bed.

"Good morning, sleepyhead. We got you a nice treat for breakfast," she says, smiling.

I stand next to Lightning, showing Jamie her favorite donut, chocolate glazed, and tell Lightning she can pick Jamie — who is half asleep — up. I tell Jamie we're going to eat breakfast on the deck downstairs and go to make tea.

Lightning POV

It's hard to believe I'm carrying Jamie downstairs, but I worry she's only calm because she's half asleep. This worries me; she's never been this exhausted after a night of nightmares. They're not telling me something.

Even though Jamie is eating breakfast and not panicking, I'm sitting next to her, but something doesn't feel right. I should have left my door open last night to hear her cry.

"What happened last night?" I ask Crosshairs as Drift takes Jamie back to his room.

"It's been rough the past week. She gets little sleep at night. She's making good progress, but it'll be awhile before the nightmares stop."

We go upstairs to find Jamie is ready for a nap. That's how exhausted she is, damn.

I decide to sleep with her.

Jamie POV

I didn't think she'd be asleep next to me. Drift is asleep on the couch he has in his room. I think Crosshairs has been checking on us as I hear him walking into the room. I didn't think he'd carry me out of the room to his room.

Crosshairs sits on the bed and hugs me.

What did she say now?

"Lightning doesn't want to hurt you. She's not liking you've been having the same nightmare for weeks. She will not hurt us. Is Drift lying about using sedation on you?"

"No."

"Then you are ok with her holding you while we all do something together?" I don't know how to answer him. How can I be ok with this and still have nightmares? "This is a good step, but it's going to take time for the nightmares to stop. I know you don't consider Lightning a friend yet. I hope you two will consider each other sisters."

I'm so tired of the nightmares. They don't know these nightmares have been changing between Crosshairs getting killed, Drift getting killed afterward, and Lightning trying to kill me again, but I'm not lucky. I don't mean to, but I end up crying. Crosshairs says nothing as he hugs me.

"Does she get any sleep?" I hear Rangeblade ask.

"You saw her asleep for three hours. I don't know what happened."

I'm fine with watching T.V. with the others and sitting by Lightning, but my mind is thinking of the nightmares. Which one will happen tonight? I should give up on sleep. Maybe I'll be exhausted in a few days to the point I don't dream; therefore, I don't have these nightmares.

Drift lays in bed with me. I pretend to be asleep for an hour, leaving the room. I don't know what I'm going to do until six in the morning, but I don't want to go to sleep.

"What are you doing?" I hear Lightning as I walk down the hall, "even if it wasn't nine at night, you can't go down the stairs yet — at least I wasn't told you can — and if you fall ..."

"No."

By the look on her face, I think Lightning figured it out.

Lighting POV

I worried she'd refuse to sleep because of the nightmares. She's relaxed when I pick her up. Before I take her to my room, I see Rangeblade walking upstairs. She's happy until she sees Jamie and me.

Scrap," she says as she looks at us, concerned.

"Take her to my room. I'm going to get her tablet."

Since Range is carrying a plate, I set Jamie down, hoping she won't runoff. I know Jamie thinks I'll wake Drift — and I probably should be — but I want to handle this myself.

Rangeblade POV

Don't tell me these nightmares are so bad she doesn't want to sleep? I don't know if trying to get her to sleep while in your room is a good idea, Lightning.

Jamie and I sit on the bed. She's relaxed for now, but will this last?

"She's not going to hurt you," I assure her — aware we've all become a broken record saying this.

The three of us cram into Lightning's bed. I don't think this is going to help Jamie, but we'll see. At least these two are doing stuff together as Crosshairs wants.
