Chapter 4: Practice Makes Perfect

Disclaimer: I do not own RWBY or any of the characters involved except team MRTR

Team MRTR was sitting in the library with team RWBY. While RWBY was playing a board game they were working on how to take down the armored assignment Professor Goodwitch had given them. Rylee drew a line with a pencil from an orange gamepiece to make a large, half-circle around a larger, gray gamepiece.

"So Merc, you move around this way and then once I have it distracted with my semblance and Tyler's ice you move in and take it down,"

"What about me?" Rachel asked.

"You stay back and make sure that if anybody gets hurt you use the attachment Tyler designed," Rylee told her.

Merc nodded as he looked over the map of their planned strategy. "This seems like it will work," he said.

"We can only hope," Rylee said as she put her pencil behind her ear and brushed a strange of hair back in the same motion.

She rolled up their plan and deposited into her bag before looking to the rest of her team. "Are we ready?" She asked.

Tyler nodded excitedly while Rachel smiled. Merc closed his eyes and relaxed his body before opening them again and seeing his team was looking at him expectantly.

"I'll contact Professor Goodwitch," he told them.

The team made their way out of the library while Merc contacted the Professor on his scroll. She agreed to oversee another training session in the gym. The team made their way there and found Professor Goodwitch waiting with her tablet and the armored training bot once again.

"Are you ready to try again children?" She asked.

The team drew their weapons and she nodded.

"Very well. Begin!" She called as she pressed a button on her tablet.

The training bot stirred and the visor on its faceplate began to glow red as it drew its sword out of the ground. It then charged toward the team.

"Scatter!" Merc shouted.

He and Rylee both took off toward the robot, but Merc then broke off and began to speed off to the side to get behind it. Tyler and Rachel meanwhile leapt to the left and right respectively. Tyler raised his pistols and fired off a series of shots at the bot's feet, each one exploded into a small, spiky glacier of ice. The robot stomped through these as it continued to charge, but then it suddenly lurched forward, looking down it saw that one of the bullets had managed to hit so it froze the robot's leg to the floor. It lifted vainly in an attempt to break free, but found it couldn't. Rylee meanwhile continued her charge and when she was within a few feet of the robot she lifted her hand and pointed it at where the robot's brain would be. "Connect!"

A beam of Rylee's aura shot out and connected to the Robot's head. She slid to a stop and stood perfectly still. The robot relaxed and assumed the same position as Rylee. The string being a constant connection between her finger and the robot's head. Rylee then clenched her hand like she was holding a sword and released it. The robot did the same, dropping its large blade.

Tyler grinned and Rachel smiled as they realized their plan had worked.

"Now Merc!" Rylee shouted without moving.

Merc changed his course and began to charge toward the machine. His body began to glow with a bright light and an immense heat began to pour off of him before he leapt up from directly behind the robot. He lifted his katar up above his head and connected the blades to form a point, which he used to drill through the machine's chest. As he shot out of the robot's chestplate on the other side his body began to dim and he landed next to Rylee who sighed as the string faded away.

"Well done children," Professor Goodwitch said as she approached.

The team reformed in front of her and each thanked her with a bow. The sound of clapping drew everyone's attention and the team saw Professor Ozpin standing at the entrance to the Gym, his cane leaning against his leg as he clapped his hands. When he finished he rested his right hand on the cane once again and approached.

"Excellent work students," he said.

"Thanks professor," The team responded together.

Ozpin looked to Professor Goodwitch who nodded and turned toward the robot. She lifted her wand and the pieces that had been blow out by Merc's attack began to glow purple and lifted into the air and back toward the robot. While she was pre-occupied with that Ozpin turned to team MRTR.

"I hate to do this to you all so soon after you defeated your first opponent, but I have a special mission for you all," Ozpin explained.

"Really?" Rylee asked excitedly.

Ozpin nodded and looked to Merc. "This has something to do with your father, and something he in my care," he said.

Merc's eyes widened as Ozpin told him this.

"What is it?" Tyler asked.

"A special artifact that Merc might find useful, the only problem is that the safehouse where it was kept was broken into a few nights ago and it was stolen,"

"That's not good," Rachel said.

Ozpin shook his head, "It isn't, but there's some good news. I don't believe the criminals know what the item is or how to use it. However that may not remain the case for long, so I would like you team MRTR to investigate the break-in and bring these criminals into the local authorities,"

Merc nodded as he received the mission.

"Your reward, young Merc, will be the item upon its retrieval, I feel that you will know how to use as soon as it's in your possession," Ozpin added.

"Very well," Merc turned to his team.

"We'll investigate tomorrow, first thing in the morning,"

His team groaned as he said that.
