Summary/Disclaimer: Time for another chapter of The Dragon and her rook. Enjoy the 900-word chapter. I don't own RWBY, Monty Oum, and Rooster Teeth do.
(Atlas, during 'A Night Off.'.)
Bumblebee roared through the streets of Mantle. Yang looked at the citizens of the town as her bike stopped outside one of the clubs.
"None of them look happy," Yang stated with a frown. She looked at Skyler who bared the brunt of most of the dirty looks. "Sky?" Yang asked as Skyler turned to look at her.
"Things haven't been the same since I left, Yang," Skyler said as they walked through the city. "The military and people haven't been this distant, though." Skyler put in as he sighed and looked around.
Skyler could see every scowl, glare, and angry look as the duo walked through the city. It didn't help that Skyler knew this was because of his uncle. The Atlesian Army didn't deploy in such massive numbers like this. They chose to stay on Atlas and allow the people to help themselves.
Skyler didn't like the idea his uncle was on the council in 2 positions either. Skyler knew how dangerous it was to not only have someone as the lead military commander but the leader of the school as well.
"Sky?" Yang asked as she stopped and clutched his hand. Skyler blinked only to realize he almost smashed face-first into a street sign. "Easy, soldier boy. You're going to smash your loveable face in." Yang stated while she pulled him along.
The place they were visiting was called the Frosty Flare. Yang had several times questioned the name of the bar, only for Skyler to comment he hadn't named said building.
"Sorry, I'm just thinking," Skyler said before letting out a hum and rubbing at his temples. "My uncle and Robyn are squeezing Solitas apart," Skyler added before continuing to follow Yang.
Yang said nothing and leaned her head on his shoulder. She slipped her right hand into his. Their mechanical fingers intertwined before the couple looked ahead.
"Robyn attacked the military convoy a few days ago, right?" Yang asked while Skyler sighed and crossed his arms with annoyance.
Skyler and Yang stopped to see a group of soldiers advancing across the street. There was a Paladin-290 carrying one of Merlot's androids in its metallic fist.
"Merlot…" Skyler muttered as the group of soldiers turned the corner and departed. "I told my uncle he's already in the city. Everyone wants to start pointing their fingers at each other." Skyler said before starting to rub at his temples with his other hand.
Yang looked at the group and questioned how long Atlas had been fighting Merlot. She turned to look at Skyler who held onto her robotic arm tighter.
"This night off is starting to feel like just a way for my uncle to get us off his back at the moment," Skyler stated as he leaned on the wall. "He would never send this many soldiers to Mantle. They've never needed so much of a garrison." Skyler said while Yang turned to the man she was engaged to.
Yang wanted to question why Skyler was so on edge, but she had already known. Skyler wasn't used to being locked out of the loop.
His home was under siege from an old enemy, and the commander of its military, along with someone she didn't know were busy warring. Skyler wanted to protect his home but trying to do that meant opposing the military he fought so loyally for.
"Sky?" Yang asked before she pulled Skyler to her. Skyler looked at his soon-to-be wife with a visible frown on his face. "I get both of us to want to help Atlas, but right now. We need to take our minds off that. This is our night off." Yang said as she cupped her fiancee's face in her hands.
"We should enjoy whatever break we get from this war." Yang said with a smile "Tomorrow? That's when we start fighting for Atlas." Yang said for a fact as she turned and walked to the front door.
Skyler nodded; he took a look around at Mantle. This was his home; this was where he rested his head every time he returned. His uncle wasn't going to save Atlas, but he would.
Still? This wasn't the time to start planning for a counterattack. He'd be selfish to put his relationship aside tonight.
"I'm coming, firefly," Skyler stated before he cracked his neck and hummed as he followed Yang inside.
It was time to relax. Skyler would plan for the defense of Mantle tomorrow. Tonight? It was time to relax, kick up his feet and relax.
Skyler opened the door. The low light caused him to shield his eyes for a moment while his eyes adjusted to the low light.
"Oh, this is going to be a long night," Skyler stated to himself.
Yang chuckled with sheer amusement as her fiancee turned and walked to her with a hum.
