The War of Scottish Independence had begun. Word spread fast, but apparently not fast enough for some people. When England invaded, the news had spread throughout Scotland by the end of the day. The morning the Ferguson province had fallen, Hamish, William's third son, immediately grabbed a war balloon and flew to Air Temple Island as fast as possible.
At sunset, on the island, Aang, now 38, and Katara, now 40, were spending time at the temple with their three children Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin. Aang appeared to favor Tenzin, since he was the only airbender of the three.
Katara walked into the temple and said to Aang, "Sweetie, a war balloon is approaching in the distance."
"From where?", Aang asked.
"Scotland"
"Coming here?...Oh, alright. I'll come take a look. Tenzin, you keep practicing, ok?"
"Yes, father.", Tenzin said.
A few minutes later, the balloon landed in a large open area and Hamish stepped out. He had long red hair and was wearing a kilt with the tartan from Clan MacKay.
"Hamish!"
"Hello, Aang.", he said as the two quickly hugged. Just like his father and all his brothers, he had a thick Scottish accent.
When they broke, Aang continued, "What are you doing here?"
"I heard you might be here, lad. I have some news. Can we talk?"
"Of course. Come on in."
They went into a living room attachment of the temple. The temple had everything. It was Aang and Katara's home after all. They sat down on couches across from each other.
"It's really good to see you again, Hamish. You've gotten a little bigger since we last saw you. How long has it been?"
"Two years. And it's good to see you too."
"So how's your father been lately? It's been about that long since I've also seen him."
"Well that's what I came here to talk about."
"Ok...So what did you want to talk about?"
"Scotland was invaded. Two days ago to be exact."
"What??? What happened? Who did it?"
"England. A little over a week ago our leader of Clan Ferguson passed away. He left no heir to his throne, so Longshanks ordered an attack. The Ferguson province was captured just this morning."
"Wow...I'm terribly sorry to hear about this, Hamish. But can't you guys fend off the English?"
"Our chances aren't very good. Their army outnumbers us ten to one. They have many soldiers in the reserves. And even if they suffered many more casualties than expected, Longshanks would just order every able bodied man to be conscripted."
"Well...Why did you come to me?"
"Because you're the Avatar. You can help us. If you defeated Firelord Ozai on Sozin's Comet, you can certainly help us win this new war that we've been dragged into."
"I know that Sozin's Comet was my defining moment. But I already fought in one war. I'm not going drag myself and my family into another."
"But it's your job. You are the one responsible for keeping balance between good and evil."
"I have confidence in you, your father, and your country, Hamish. I'm not going. I'm sorry."
"Oh, yes you are.", Katara said. She had been listening to the conversation without them knowing it.
"Katara I'm not putting you or our children in jeopardy. You've already been through enough war in your lifetime as is. I only want to keep you safe."
Katara sat down on the couch and said, "I know sweetie. But you know I proven that I'm more capable of fighting than most people are. This isn't about us. It's about William, his family, and his kingdom."
Aang thought for a couple seconds and then continued, "Well...what about the children?"
"We can take them down to Southern Water Tribe and they can stay with my dad. He'd be more than glad take them off our hands."
"...We'll think about it. Hamish, could you give us a minute?"
"Certainly"
Hamish stood outside for a few minutes while Aang was making a decision. At this point, night had fallen.
Aang came out and said, "Ok. We're in. But I'll be helping from a respectable distance. I know it's what your father would want. He never liked asking for help."
"That's all I needed to hear. How soon can you be ready?"
"We'll leave tomorrow morning. But first we'll be taking the children to the Southern Water Tribe where they stay until further notice."
"That's absolutely fine. Make sure then to wake up extra early in the morning."
"I will. Speaking of which, since it's dark out, why don't you just spend the night here?"
"Oh, I don't want to impose-"
"Nonsense. Besides, you need your rest. You spent all day flying."
Hamish spent the night in the temple. Early the next morning, Aang and the family departed on Appa for the Southern Water Tribe. Hamish flew the war balloon to Ireland to tell his younger brother Stephen about the war. Although, only 13, Stephen was the king of Ireland. Because of this, Ireland and Scotland had a personal union with each other, despite being separate countries. When Stephen was 10, he had left Scotland to lead the Irish as they lived their lives in isolation, but also readiness.
With it being sunset, Hamish spent the night. The next morning, Stephen got on the war balloon with Hamish and went back to Scotland. They finally arrived at sunset, just as they expected.
