A/N: Here we are, reunited once more! Thank you once again to everyone joining me and our heroines on this journey. I'm going to mark the story as complete for now, but I'd be interested in writing more in this universe or with these characters in the future as my schedule permits.
The Day Before Hogwarts Graduation
June 27, 1998
Two years had passed and the bond that Hermione had formed with her mothers had only grown stronger. Her presentation on family reunification at the end of the Ministry of Magic summer program was met with great praise and she was invited back for future summers to come work with the members of the Wizengamot. Amelia couldn't be prouder of the way Hermione had followed her convictions and, with Amelia's help, led the charge to bring some of her classmates back together with parents who may have moved as far away as Australia to escape persecution.
During her final year at Hogwarts, Amelia decided to join the staff at Hogwarts, tired of all of the constant politics and disagreements at the Ministry of Magic. As the new Headmistress, Minerva was more than relieved to have found a qualified replacement to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. Hermione, Harry, and Ron learned invaluable lessons from her and the boys were looking forward to applying to the auror program after graduation with Amelia's strong encouragment. Ron's face upon finding out that the stern Head of the Wizengamot was not only going to be his professor but was in fact Hermione's mother only came in second to him finding out that the Headmistress was also Hermione's mother. After briefly attempting to pursue Hermione as a romantic interest, finding out about Hermione's parentage was more than enough to make him back off. Hermione gently explained to him that she had never been interested in the first place and that her affections lay elsewhere.
The night before graduation, Hermione had dinner in Minerva and Amelia's shared quarters in the castle, as they usually did on Saturday evening. They had a toast to Hermione's academic success and bright future at a law school that combined wizarding and muggle traditions to train future lawyers and members of the Wizengamot. Hermione desperately wanted to keep what happened to her family from happening to anyone else and was grateful that she had support from her mothers in the wizarding world and the Grangers who connected her with a squib working in a muggle law office with whom she would train during the summer.
It was then that Hermione decided to share a small announcement of her own, hoping it would be well received.
"There's something I've been meaning to share with you for a few months now and I think now is a good a time as ever to tell you."
Interest piqued, Amelia enquired, "Is this about the person you've been seeing this year?"
Blushing, Hermione muttered "Leave it to an auror to figure out that I've been sort of seeing someone. Yeah…I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. A few months ago, I bumped into an old friend from my muggle primary school in the most unlikely of places – Diagon Alley. Since then, we've been writing back and forth getting reacquainted and we've had lunch a few times. Well, we realized we were both interested in pursuing something more than a friendship. We have a lot in common and I've been enjoying learning about magical education at Ilvermorny."
Minerva jumped in, "Hermione, we would expect you to want to date and pursue romantic interests at your age. There's nothing wrong about that. What's your friend's name?"
"Her name is Hazel. My…uh…the Grangers and her parents are good friend. We basically grew up together but lost touch when I started Hogwarts because I didn't know she was a witch and her parents wanted her to go to Ilvermorny where her American cousins studied. Her parents are muggles like the Grangers and they all get along well. I haven't actually told the Grangers yet that we're dating..." Hermione stumbled a bit over her words, unsure of how her mothers would take the news.
"Hermione, were you afraid to tell us because you're seeing a young woman?" Amelia asked.
"I suppose on some level I was. I'd never really felt romantically interested in anyone, even after Ron kept wanting to all but tell Molly that we were dating. At first, I thought Hazel and I were just rekindling a friendship but there was a spark that wasn't there before. When I hugged her after getting tea together, I felt almost like I do when I hug either of you, a coursing of magic between us." Minerva and Amelia grinned knowingly.
Mineva took Hermione's hand in her own and said, "My dear, I believe you may have found your soulmate."
"Can we meet her, Hermione?" Amelia asked.
"Yes, she's more than welcome to come to our little gathering at the manor tomorrow," Minerva chimed in.
Hermione blushed again. "Well…I may have already invited her. Provided it's ok with both of you."
"Certainly! I know the magical and muggle worlds haven't been very amenable to women who love other women, but we would support you even if we ourselves didn't have those proclivities. That's why I stuck it out for so long in the Wizengamot, to make changes for your generation and the generations to come." Amelia wanted to be very clear that she supported her daughter while also not making a big deal about Hermione's revelation.
Hermione felt so loved in that moment that she didn't know what to say other than launch herself into Amelia's arms and thank her profusely before doing the same with Minerva.
Hogwarts Graduation Day
June 28, 1998
The fanfare and celebration had been grand and Hermione and her classmates rejoiced in finishing up seven years at Hogwarts together. Ron was already too enamored by Lavender Brown to bother Hermione anymore and Harry was so head over heels in love with Ginny that Hermione had to remind him that they should wait to get married until she finished Hogwarts the following year.
After spending a lively afternoon in the Burrow with the Weasley matriarch as host to a rambunctious group of Hogwarts graduates, Hermione and a few friends retired to McGonagall manor for a more intimate graduation celebration. The Grangers made an appearance, teary eyed that their little girl was about to start law school and a new life for herself in London. Hermione assured them she would have dinner with them a few times a week and would stay in touch with both sets of parents.
Hazel introduced herself to everyone, feeling a bit more self-assured than she normally would since the group was in such a good mood.
"Hazel, so good to meet you. I would say that Hermione has told us so much about you, but in truth I only learned that you've been a longtime friend of hers yesterday." Amelia extended her hand to the young American educated witch.
"Hermione and I had been hoping to tell you about us soon, Madam Bones, but weren't sure about the right time since we've only just reconnected."
"That's quite all right dear, it's a pleasure to meet you. I should say that you're part of the family now too, Hazel, regardless of if you and Hermione decide to continue dating or remain good friends. You're welcome to call me Amelia if you wish."
"Oh, thank you very much Amelia!" Hazel exclaimed as Amelia gave her a brief side hug.
Hermione thanked her mothers profusely for being so welcoming to Hazel and the group made plans to meet Hazel's parents later that summer.
The hour was getting late and only Hermione, Amelia, and Minerva remained at the manor to tidy up the party and get ready for bed. Unbeknownst to the others, Amelia had one last surprise up her sleeve that graduation day.
"Minerva?" Amelia called to her partner who was putting some chairs away with the help of Hermione.
"Yes, dearest?" Minerva asked, looking back at Amelia patiently waiting in the living room.
"I have one more gift today, but I'm afraid it's not for Hermione."
Minerva and Hermione came over and sat down near Amelia who looked a little nervous but was trying to keep her nerves in check.
"Minerva, the last two years of us being together and being with Hermione were all I wanted when we started our little family. We've been able to do things that other couples can do without fear, we've been able to become a family again."
"I know, love. No more danger or sneaking around, no more living away from each other for the better part of the year. It's been all I can dream and so much more." Minerva joined hands with her partner while Hermione smiled widely at the scene unfolding in front of her.
"I'm so fortunate to be your partner, to be your soulmate and best friend, to be the mother of our wonderful daughter, and there's just one thing left that I'd like to ask of you. Minerva McGonagall, will you do me the honor of marrying me?" Amelia pulled out an elegant ring with an emerald set in the center, perfect for Minerva.
"Yes! Oh Amelia, let's make it official once and for all!" Minerva thought she could never be happier than she was in that moment as Amelia chuckled and slid the ring onto her soon to be spouse's finger.
The two of them basked in the moment, forgetting about Hermione for a moment until she interrupted and said, "Go ahead, just kiss each other already!"
The two witches laughed, feeling as madly in love as they did all those years ago when unexpectedly finding out that Amelia was pregnant. Amelia leaned forward and gently kissed Minerva who closed the remaining distance between them by wrapping her arms around her and soundly kissing her on the lips. They restrained themselves slightly knowing that their teenage daughter was watching, but also knew they had her blessing.
Hermione chucked and muttered, "I'm never going to top this when I'm ready to get married."
Later that night Minerva and Amelia snuggled together in bed, the emerald ring on Minerva's finger glistening in the dim moonlight coming into the bedroom.
Waking up the next day, Amelia rolled over and looked at the witch next to her, her eyes fluttering open as they both woke up.
"Morning" Amelia said, still a bit drowsy.
"Morning, love."
"I can't believe we get to do this for the rest of our lives." Amelia said, placing a chaste kiss on Minerva's lips.
"Me neither, and I'm loathe to admit how much I missed you and how much I've enjoyed the three of us being together. Shall we go to the ministry and make it official?" Minerva quipped, knowing that Amelia could never say no.
"I think we should tell Hermione first, but I think that's a great idea, my practical fiancée. We've been together for over two decades, I think I'd be fine with a short engagement."
"Not getting cold feet are you?"
"Only when you take the blankets! You know I get cold even in the summer!" Amelia joked, kicking her partner lightly in the shin.
At breakfast the pair informed Hermione of their plan and she approved, with one request.
"Can I go with you? I wasn't sure how to ask you this earlier, but I already asked the Grangers and they agreed. I'd like to change my last name to your last names. I don't want to change my name if I ever get married, I want to have your names, if you'll let me."
So occupied as they were with each other, Hermione's request surprised them more than Amelia's proposal. They quickly agreed, very touched by Hermione's request. The three off them apparated together to the Ministry of Magic to finally make official that which had been delayed for so long, a reunion years in the making.
