When Toph made it back to Edinburgh, the castle was still guarded, but was mostly empty inside. Christian was the only one still there. She opened the doors and could feel him sitting in front of the fireplace. She walked over and sat on the long bench next to him.
"Who are you?", she asked.
"I think I meet you already."
"Wait...you're that boy from Glasgow."
"Yes"
"What are you doing sitting here all alone?"
"Everyone went to Glasgow. Father said I couldn't go."
"To Glasgow? How come?"
"To go get...wait...you're the queen. You're why everyone left. But you're here. But...you were gone."
"I think I'm losing you, kid. None of what you said made sense."
"Father and everyone else found out you left. They then took off to Glasgow to find you. But they won't because you're here."
"Oh...oh no. I fear I've put everyone in danger. But I never asked them to go get me. I never asked them for anything."
"Yeah. Father mentioned that you like to do your own thing. He said you like take care of yourself and you never ask for help."
"Yes, that's true...wait. Who are you talking about? Who do you keep calling father?"
"Umm..."
"Tell me specifically. These things you're tell me sound awfully familiar."
"William MacKay, King of the Scots...and you're Toph Beifong which makes you...mother."
Christian then hugged her but she didn't hug back, as she was still confused.
"Wait. Did my husband adopt you?"
He nodded.
"Oh. Well, that's just...peachy."
"Why? Do you not like me?"
"Oh no, that's not what I meant. It's just that...he used to things like this when we were together. He loved to announce that something had just happened out of the blue. When he gets back-"
"I thought he was in danger now."
"I'm worried about the others. But William's a strong man. He'll fight his way out. Anyway, when he gets back, I'm going to slug him."
"It makes sense. He said my new mother had a short temper."
She looked at Christian and yelled, "NO, I DON'T!"
Instead of being afraid, he laughed at the irony behind it.
"Stop laughing! My first order as your new 'mother' is for you to stop laughing."
He slowed down and then stopped. He leaned his head on her arm and said, "I'm tired."
"Well, you can go to sleep wherever."
"Well, last night, father took me-"
"Alright, fine."
She took him upstairs back to his room, where the same thing happened again.
"Well...goodnight, kid."
"Goodnight, mother."
Toph became filled with emotion. She did not expect him to so quickly accept her as his new mother. She went back downstairs in front of the fireplace, hoping everyone would walk in sooner rather than later.
After half an hour, the group made it back and opened the doors. She had sensed them about a minute earlier.
"Well it's about time.", she said as she stood up.
Everyone was shocked to see her alive. William ran over and hugged her, followed by everyone else.
"What's going on here?", she asked.
"I thought you were dead.", William said.
"You mean WE thought you were dead.", Katara said.
"Of course. We."
"Well, I'm not.", Toph said.
"Then what happened?"
"When I got there, they did kidnap me. But before they could do anything, I escaped. I really thought I would run into you on the way back. And what about you? What did you guys do?"
"Well...we...kinda...", Aang struggled to admit.
"We won!", Sokka yelled. Everyone else yelled afterwards.
"All of you shut up. Keep your voices down.", Toph said. "What do you mean you won?"
"We went in and ridden Glasgow and all of the MacDougell province of the English. There are no more...We battled them and won." William said.
"Oh...well...I guess that's good news. We're finally making progress in this war."
"Yeah. Now why do we need to keep our voices down?"
"Well I just put our new 'son' into bed a little bit ago."
The rest of the group awkwardly left the castle while Toph continued.
"You adopted a child without telling me?"
"On the same night, you ran off and risked your life without telling me. Besides, it shouldn't matter to you anyways. If this war ends on a hopeful note, you'll be going back to Republic City and he'll stay here."
"Right...well...let's both agree to not...be so secretive and sneaky anymore."
"...I can do that."
"So, what now?"
"We're leaving once again. We'll walk just south of here, set up camp, and then a few days from now, we'll take back Happrew. You ought to come with us."
"What about Christian?"
"I know he just got here, but tomorrow morning Aang will fly him to the Southern Water Tribe. He'll stay with the others until this war is over."
"Well then, let's get moving."
They both exited the castle, and walked with the group to set up camp.
The next morning, both Christian and Suyin, since they were both very young still, were flown to the Southern Water Tribe.
