The lady sat elegantly on her gorgeous red chair. She adjusted the ruffles of her long, Victorian-styled dress and tucked her legs in.
She peered over to the ornate bed that lay in the corner of the room. The delicate body that rested silently in the corner always caught her eye. It's face of porcelain, it's flowering fingertips and it's perfect long eyelashes.
The children gathered in the room, she smiled, noticing the tangles in her hair and holding in her anger.
"Good morning children"
She gleamed,
"Today, we shall see how he is doing in his new home. Are you excited?"
They cheered, prompting the lady to start reading.
Yugi stared up at his pale grey ceiling. It was slightly bumpy and looked cold. He loved the ray of sunlight that beamed onto his petite body and made him feel warm and happy.
The door creaked open slightly and his new grandfather looked in.
"Good morning!" He smiled calmly at Yugi, who rubbed his eyes sleepily.
"M-morning..!" He beamed back, pulling himself out of bed and looking up to Sugoroku.
Sugoroku handed him a different sweater and helped him put it on. The sleeves draped over his hands and hugged onto his body. Yugi was lead downstairs and sat peacefully on the small wooden chair of the dining room.
"Today… I have an errand for you" Yugi's grandfather started, "I want you to go outside and look around town."
Yugi stared at the ground. He played around with his fingers and tucked his legs in. He whimpered quietly,
"I-i don't think I can…"
"Please? You'll be okay, no one will hurt you here"
"I-I'm scared!!" Yugi cried, trying not to shout. The old man placed his hand on the little boy's head, "I'll be with you if you want"
Yugi settled on that. He somewhat understood that by doing this he's helping pay back Sugoroku for helping him.
Yugi was handed some food, a beautifully stacked plate of golden, flat circles.
"What are these..?" Yugi asked,
The old man chuckled, "Pancakes."
"They're really yummy..!" Yugi beamed, wolfing them and gulping down his orange juice.
Once he had finished eating, the old man handed Yugi his bag and took his hand.
"Here, let's go."
Yugi nodded nervously, he was shaking slightly, squeezing his eyes shut as he left through the open door.
"Good morning Sugoroku," an old lady passing by smiled, "Oh my, what a cute assistant you have there!"
She waved at Yugi kindly, he built up the courage to wave back.
He walked down the streets. There were houses of all different shades of grey. He took interest in seeing all the different kinds of bricks cemented into the building's walls. The wheel was happily spinning and spitting water again, which Yugi was very curious about.
"Why does that wheel spit water?"
Yugi looked up at his grandfather, who laughed,
"It's a water wheel. It makes electricity and helps mill the flour."
He smiled, Yugi nodded, very interested.
The houses and buildings were very small. Even when they reached the town square, they were all very minuscule in size. Yugi watched as the fountain in the middle spouted water and splashed everywhere in the small little pool bricked off in the centre.
"I have to go buy some books, would you mind waiting here?"
The old man asked, Yugi shook his head and sat down by the fountain, enjoying the cool splashes of water hitting his head.
He was suddenly distracted by loud coughing and choking. He looked over in the general direction of the sound. There was a very familiar boy. He was trying to tug a large, wooden cart over to the square, but was struggling. Yugi found the confidence to approach him.
'Maybe if I help, Grandpa will be proud!'
He had thought to himself, going up to the boy. He remembered his name, Yami.
"Um…!" Yugi suddenly froze up, losing all his courage, "C-c-can I help you??"
The deep grey eyes of Yami pierced into Yugi's.
"I can do this myself--"
He grabbed ahold of the bar on the cart and started coughing again. He was breathing very quickly and swaying from side to side.
"Here, I can do it. W-where do you need it to be??"
Yugi asked kindly, Yami glared at him, "I'm fine!!"
The petite boy shook his head, playing with his hair, "I-I'll put it in the square, okay?"
Yami growled but didn't stop the boy as he forcefully lugged the cart over to the middle of the square.
"T-thank you… I guess.."
Yami blushed. He felt a wave of heat overcome him. The floor swayed under his feet and he felt his consciousness fade.
Yugi grabbed him and helped sit him down.
"Grandpa!!" Yugi called out as the old man walked out of the store. He quickly made his way to where Yugi and Yami were. He asked what happened and Yugi explained quietly.
"That was very kind of you, Yugi."
He pets Yugi gently, making him feel proud. Yugi was glad his efforts weren't wasted.
"We need to take him home"
Sugoroku said, giving Yami a gentle shake. He didn't respond for a bit, staring off to space. He soon snapped out of it, gasping suddenly.
"I-i can make it home myself!!"
And with that line, Yugi decided to help take him home. He was clearly not capable of going home himself.
Yami stared darkly at the floor. He was being supported by Yugi's shoulder. Yugi was terrified in case he dropped him, but did it to make Sugoroku proud.
The cobbled floor was hard and unsteady. That was something he had noticed as he walked, supporting Yami. The sound of rushing water grew louder and louder as the group of three reached the bakery. Yugi got a good look at the wooden wheel that spun. He realised that it wasn't spitting water, it was merely throwing it around.
Sugoroku opened the door and rang the little bell on the counter.
"Aika!" He called as a tall, short-haired lady walked calmly through the door that separated the store and the home.
"Oh my!! Yami!! What were you doing?!"
She had a very arrogant sounding voice, like Yami. She immediately ran over and picked him up. Yami went completely limp as he was carried, complaining but barely able to move. She had invited Yugi and Grandpa in, who accepted and sat in the living room.
"Thank you so much for helping him! I'll give him a good scold later ~"
She gleamed, stroking Yami on the head like a kitten.
"N-N-no problems…."
Yugi muttered shyly, he twiddled his thumbs and stayed close to Sugoroku. Yami gave small complaints as the lady cuddled him tightly. She was sitting on the sofa, opposite to Yugi and his grandfather.
"Will you be going to school?" She questioned Yugi gently, he shrugged.
"He might… What do you think, Aika?" Sugoroku asked back in reply. She said to go for it and the conversation ended as soon as Yami started coughing and crying,
"I-you-they…. Lemme go! I-I'm okay now!!"
Aika, as she was called, gently petted the complaining boy and shushed him like you would a child. Despite acting very motherly and kind, there was a hint of threat and anger in her deep grey eyes. Yugi was rather afraid of Aika for no other reason than that distinct aura she had.
Yugi watched as Yami was carried to bed. He listened to all the complaints and escape attempts that the boy had as she carried him up.
"I swear.. He is getting worse.."
She sighed, "Like, let me hold you at least!"
There seemed to be a habit of complaining passed down in the family. Yugi had fun observing those people quietly. They were interesting.
Yugi held onto Sugoroku's hand tightly as they left. He loved the small, rounded cottages and the adorable shop fronts of the town. He slowly grew used to walking around outside, making him a little bit more confident in himself and the people of the town.
Inside his new home, Yugi stared out of the window in his bedroom. He had a skylight that was built coming off of the roof and also a small window that looked out to the streets. It was a very airy room.
Yugi had immersed himself in learning how to write and read, something he didn't know how to do beforehand. He loved all the different handwriting styles and delicate stories that told him about different minds and places.
His stream of thought was interrupted by a small tapping on his window.
A little, grey rock was being thrown at his window. He looked up to see Yami, holding a pile of rocks in his pale hands. There was the blonde boy from before there too.
"Oi! You 'ere??"
He called out. Yugi opened up the window and responded back, saying he was. The window blew through his hair, brushing against his cheeks softly.
"Yo!" the blonde grinned. He stood next to Yami closely. The teen smirked as he leaned out of the window to talk to Yugi.
Yami tied his hair back with a small hairband, making a puffy ponytail which stood out on the back of his head. Yugi thought that was a very adorable sight.
"Teach wants ta know if ye wanna come 'nd tour the school tomorrow?"
Yugi thought about it for a bit. He was still very nervous about talking to people, even if he felt a little safer after going out and looking around.
"S-sure..!" He smiled at the two boys. The two (mainly Jounouchi) gave vivid descriptions of some of the people in their class. There were apparently only two classrooms, as the town was so small.
They talked about their friends, mostly of how hyperactive some of them are, and also about the teacher, an old guy who is really kind and understanding. With every little description, Yugi wanted to go over there and see it for himself.
"And! There's this really pretty forest! There's a lake outback which is really beautiful!"
Yami gleamed. They were planning on putting a secret base there for the friend group, apparently, the adults got too annoying sometimes and they needed an escape.
Yugi was very excited about what was to come.
" I'll… I'll go.. Tomorrow... " Yugi said quietly, smiling as the two boys put on a very exciting expression.
Yugi had never thought that someone as whiny and proud as Yami could put on such an excited, loving smile. He remembered all the people back at his old "home ". They all had scowling faces, proud and arrogant attitudes and stuck up faces. He remembered them chucking trash at him and kicking him over and over and over again.
Yugi teared up, the boys started asking if he was okay.
"C-c-can you be my…. Fr… Friend?"
The small boy stuttered, making the other two laugh quietly.
Yami held his hand out, just far enough so Yugi could reach.
"Sure"
Yugi reached out and touched his hand. His heart skipped a beat as their hands brushed against each other.
"Y-you, guys... Are my first...ever friends.."
He smiled quietly, Jounouchi joined in on the action by reaching his hand out and touching the other's hands as well.
"Really?"
Yugi nodded, and with a call from Jounouchi's parents, the conversation ended in bliss.
The boy was tucked into bed once the night plunged the world into darkness. Yugi couldn't fall asleep. His heart was beating quickly and he was very excited.
For he had gotten his first-ever friends.
