Chapter 1: Lost in a land away from home
What would you do if you became lost? Away from everything you know and love? A young man is washed away from his homeland and awakes to nothing but the silence of a seemingly deserted island. Will he survive this ordeal or will he break under the weight of the horrible situation he is now in. Who knows, but he will find out sooner or later that his role in this world could potentially shake it to it's core. But as with all stories, you have to start somewhere.
[Deserted Island]
(Third person point of view)
Being carried along the shallow waves. A young man is carefully laid onto the shore by the blue sea. Upon awakening to the bright tropical sunlight the young man lays ever still as the rays of light hit his face. Moving his head he notices the long beach he now finds himself on, the wind gently passing him as he tries to stand up.
"Ugh, What happened?" said the young man standing up.
Looking around behind him he sees a large forest with trees so tall in comparison to office buildings and further behind them reside two mountains.
"I'm a long way from home. I hope I am not to far." said the young man.
A shooting pain went though the young man's head soon after speaking.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhh!" screamed the young man as he collapsed to the sand bellow him.
Intense images flashed through his mind. Random colors started to flash in his mind red, brown, blue and white continuously in that order. After a minute of constant flashing of colors he begins to calm down.
"Fucking hell! It's alright, It's okay. Wait what's my name again?" said the young man holding his head.
"Kyle no, Jake no, Frank? Oh of course not. Wait my name, it's Joseph! Yes Joseph that's my name." said Joseph standing up once more trying to collect himself.
"My names Joseph, I'm seventeen years old and I'm from, I'm from. Where am I from?" thought Joseph as he dug deeper into his mind to remember.
The thought of two islands appears in his mind. A northern tropical island and a southern mountainous island marked by snow. His land, his home. Joseph can see a vague image of flag but nothing else.
"I can recall some of it, but I can't remember the name of it." whispered Joseph as he try desperately to remember.
"I know my name and age, but not how I came here. As far as I can remember I wasn't anywhere near the sea. Especially in this get up." said Joseph looking down at his clothes.
Joseph looked to see that he wore a white long sleeve dress shirt, black business slacks and a black waistcoat. As if by instinct or habit he lifts his left wrist to see that his golden watch remained. He notices that it's still working, continually ticking away as time passes.
"At least I have something of value I guess. The date, Tuesday seventeenth huh. I thought it was Saturday? I must have been lost out here for a few days then." said Joseph frowning at his watch.
"I wonder if I still have my phone with me." thought Joseph as he checked his pockets.
"Ah Shit, No phone. Not that it would be useful considering I was drifting in the ocean. Fuck what do I do? I'm stuck on some random Island. But wait, As far as I can remember there's no island that close to home with two mountains right next to each other, right?" said Joseph as he became increasingly more frustrated.
Realization dawned upon Joseph's face as he fears that he maybe further from home then he originally hoped.
"I-I no, please don't be true. I want this to just be a wicked nightmare and wake up in bed or a car or something please." Joseph said as he started to panic.
Walking slowly towards one of the large trees, He leans against the tree to support his body. After a few minutes he steps back from the tree and turns around taking in deep breaths.
"Breathe, just breathe." thought Joseph
The thought of being stuck on this tropical nightmare races through his mind as quickly as a bullet. Scared and enraged at the predicament he dashes towards the tree punching it as he would a boxing bag.
"WHY, WHY, WHY ME! DAMN IT ALL!" screamed Joseph as he kept punching the tree.
Joseph closed his eyes and kept swinging wildly, tears streaming down his face. After two minutes of unloading on the tree he opened his eyes to his now bloody knuckles. Despite the state of his hands he's to angry and scared to care.
"GOD DAMN IT!" screamed Joseph opening his eyes and throwing another punch at the tree only to receive a huge shock at the flames coming out in front of his fist.
"AAAAAHHHH!" yelled Joseph in fright.
The flames engulfed the tree consuming it whole near instantly. The flames were a bright blue in color and raged like a storm from hell. jumping back from what he had just witnessed, Joseph stood looking at the burning tree in awe.
"Jesus..." whispered Joseph as he slowly stepped back from the giant flame.
"What in hell's name was that? Did I do that? No I couldn't have been able to do that. It shouldn't be possible, but If I am able to do what I think it is then I'm in even more trouble than before." Joseph thought as looked down at the palms of his hand.
Turning around from the remnant of the now burned tree. Joseph faced his body towards the ocean.
"Here goes." said Joseph assuming a boxing stance.
Concentrating, towards the beach away from anything flammable. Joseph throws a right cross towards the sea and just as he thought and feared as bright blue flames reached across the beach and out over the small waves hitting the beach. It confirmed what he was afraid of, that he himself could now fire bend.
"I can fire bend. I am a fire bender now. Am I truly so far from home that what should be fictional is now a possibility. Why god why me. I don't think I'm even in my world anymore and I am afraid. God I must seem like such a coward." Joseph said sadly as tears began to flow again.
"So your giving up then eh?" said a strange voice
"Who said that?" said Joseph looking around wiping the tears from his face.
"In your head you fool." said the voice
"Well then who are you?!" said Joseph getting angry once more.
"I'm you, well the version of you that is not a coward. Jesus boy you should at yourself. A little fire and you freak out, hmph. So what if you can firebend and who cares if you will never see home again. All that matters is that we survive. Your being a big baby too, I mean this isn't you. If someone was tell you you were helpless with nowhere to go what would you do? Why you would punch them square in the jaw for their blatant rudeness. Not beg to a deity that hasn't done shit for us eh?" said the voice
Joseph looked at the ground again with a look that could kill, balling his hands into fist. With a deep breath he spoke.
"Yes your right I have been succumbing to fate a little too much. But our predicament still stands." said Joseph slowly.
"Good to see were on the same page. Well considering your new found power we have a source of fire. So that ticks off 'How to make a fire' on our check list."
"Well there is still the food, water and shelter part of the survival check list we need to accomplish." said Joseph
"Are you sure the sun hasn't completely cooked your brain? I mean if you could not firebend several days ago and the fact that bending in our world is purely fictional. Now you wake up on a deserted island far from home and half an hour later after waking up you've managed to set a building size tree on fire. It does not seem that far fetched to think you could use other bending styles to survive out here eh?" said the voice
"Could it really be possible?" asked Joseph curious.
"It wouldn't hurt to try, would it? Besides you've seen the last airbender before. Plenty of times in fact to the point you can probably recall how characters used said techniques like lightning generation or metalbending perhaps. I mean come on at the very least you should be able to remember the main four bending styles. Find a big rock and see if you can bend it." said the voice
Looking ahead down the beach Joseph sees a large boulder. Walking up to the large piece of earth Joseph took a long look at the boulder trying to figure out how to earthbend it. Just as he was thinking, a memory of the mad king Bumi of Omashu came to mind. More specifically the way he earthbended during his duel with Aang. Assuming a wide but grounded stance. Joseph concentrates as he raises his lead leg and stomps on the ground hard while simultaneously raising his arms up. To his his surprise the ground shook and the boulder was elevated in the air. Joseph then used a forward palm thrust in the air and as anticipated, the boulder when soaring into the sea.
"I can't believe it. I can earthbend as well, but mastering and learning other elements should take much longer than that. It should take lifetimes in some cases shouldn't it?" Joseph asked
"Yeah It should, but remember you've seen how they managed to accomplish and master these elemental practices. If anything Aang managed to master airbending and receive his tattoo's at the age of what twelve? Then he proceeded in the span of a few months get the minimum skill required with the other bending styles to face off against Ozai. Also if that's not enough to persuade you then if you remember the legend of Korra, Avatar Korra was able to utilize multiple bending arts as a kid. So if anything it shows that since you have the capability in theory you should be able to replicate and practice based from what you can remember. I mean look at you. You were able to earthbend just from remembering a portion of what that mad fool Bumi could do." the voice explained.
"So I just have to remember how the other characters in the series managed to pull off these techniques? This still seems too easy in theory." said Joseph
"Oh course it is. But you've got to remember the position where in, we are on a deserted island with no way of getting back. For all we know were in some other world and you need to man the fuck up and survive. I'm not some other entity inside your head. I'm you, I know practically nothing about what is going on or where we are. I am just here to reassure your not going insane." said the voice
"Never getting to see home again is one of the things I dread the most about this. But your right I don't have any real survival skills. So where ever this place is, we'll worry about it later. I don't know how I got these powers but I won't continue questioning it for the time being as long as I can hold out. After all it would be a waste of these abilities when I have a need for them eh?" said Joseph with a smirk.
"Hahahaha, About fucking time you grew a pair of balls. I was getting worried that you would just simply laid down and accept death when you have a solid chance of defying it." said the voice happily.
"Well thanks. So where do I start?" asked Joseph
"Well simple, You can earthbend now. So now you can find a place with flat ground and make an earth shelter. You can use firebending to make a fire and if you could learn waterbending it would be easy to catch fish to eat. Not to mention bending itself is a martial art with four basic styles. The more you train both physically and mentally whilst practicing can keep you both fit in the mind and body." said the voice
"Damn, that was a great idea." Joseph responded.
"Well it is your idea, I mean we are the same person. I'm just here as a mental support." joked the voice
"Hahaha." Joseph laughed
"Now come on let's head over to the water to see if you can try waterbending." said the voice
Joseph, now determined to survive out on this island decided to head over to the water to try his luck at bending the water for a meal.
[Deserted Island, Two hours later]
(Joseph's point of view)
"God damn it. Why won't you move. You were moving before, why not now?" said Joseph frustrated.
It has been several hours since Joseph has tried to waterbend. Though his progress unlike earthbending or firebending was not the same as he felt he was missing something.
"I'm obviously missing something here. Hey inner me, mind helping me out?" said Joseph
"You know you don't need to ask. I'm you, So there is no need to ask in the first place. Besides all you have to do is concentrate and let the flow of water continue through your actions just as it would flow through a river or the ocean." said the voice
"And you do realize that it has been several years since I've watched the last airbender and the legend of Korra. So my memory is hazy and considering you are essentially myself, then can you explain all the elements and how to do them. After all you've had better luck at remembering what to do than I." Joseph said scratching his head.
"Ah I see. Alright I'll explain for you, even though I am you. I suggest you sit down for this. This explanation is one you would do well to pay attention to." said the voice
Joseph promptly sat down on the beach awaiting for an explanation from himself.
"Okay so the four elements fire, air, water and earth. Each one is very useful and powerful in there own right." said the voice
Joseph thought carefully on that statement.
"Fire for example can be seen as an element of both life and death. The natural power of fire in terms of actually bending said element comes from the sun itself. Without the sun during times like a solar eclipse can render a firebender powerless. But in order to create large flames, a drive or determination is something that is almost necessary for being a successful firebender. For many benders in the Fire Nation hatred and anger was the main drive towards firebending. Thinking not of aspects of life, only the destructive purposes involved with it's use. As you already know the sun warriors used a more peaceful ideology of firebending alongside the animal that represents firebending as a whole, the dragons. Now I'll be honest even I can't remember how Zuko and Aang performed the ritual completely. Only that the dragons showed them a different perspective of firebending at the end of it all. But what I do know is that you have access to Azula's blue flames. Flames that are hotter than regular fire. Also unlike water and air you have already unlocked the ability to learn firebending so there's no real need to elaborate into all the techniques just yet." said the voice
"Life and death huh. Never would have thought fire could be so philosophical." Joseph joked.
"Haha, surprising how a show for children can carry such a message about balance and death." said the voice
"I know right?" said Joseph
Okay now airbending. The air nomads were the most spiritual out of any one group in the four nations. The connection they had to the spirit world in many cases attributed to their airbending capabilities. The air nomads were a peaceful people and their bending skills and potential with what they could do was immense in some cases. They focused on detaching themselves from the world to connect with their inner spirit and to the spirit world. You could say it was similar to seeking enlightenment in a way. While their bending was great, they focused on being neutral and peaceful. Never seeking conflict, though their bending skills were very renowned around the world. Airbending with the way it is shown, primarily focuses on evasion and retreating. Now despite that airbending can be used in combat. It's just when it has been used it does not utilize any sort of finishing or crippling moves that could cause fatal injuries. At least for most of the air nomads anyway. If you can remember back when Aang had only been just released from the iceberg. Katara, Sokka and himself went to the southern air temple and eventually Aang would find the body of Gyatso. The old monk had managed had managed to defeat and kill dozens of comet enhanced firebenders." the voice said
"Oh yeah I remember. Gyatso was Aang's mentor and one of his closest friends. He was also friends with avatar Roku and Aang once said that he was the greatest airbender to live, at least when he was around back then." Joseph said
"Yeah exactly. Well as I was saying in relation to Gyatso, is that a man who is generally considered a pacifist managed to pull that off is no less from incredible considering the beliefs of the nomads. But anyway, airbending is the element of freedom. One with the wind and all of that guru nonsense. The nomads would detach themselves from worldly attachments to be one with the wind. Some airbenders have taken this even further. Men such as Zaheer and Laghima would gain the ability to fly from truly becoming what they would consider 'free'. With the latter not touching the ground for the final years of his life until he died. Airbending is also about trying to find the path with least resistance so that the air can travel freely uninterrupted and it's also the route with less violence in their eyes. One of the first masters of this element like the dragons were of course the sky bison. Another fact about this style is that it is the most dynamic of the elements and had the potential to overwhelm and prove to be fatal against many opponents. Though again due to their pacifist beliefs such attacks would be rarely used. Gyatso is a prime example of being able to overwhelm and kill multiple opponents. The man died fighting and that's enough to earn my respect." said the voice
"I'm not sure that I would be willing to give up all worldly attachments but the idea of freedom and peace is certainly appealing." said Joseph
"I suppose so. Well next on the list and my personal favorite, earthbending." said the voice
"Alright now were talking." Joseph said enthusiastically.
"I'm liking the enthusiasm. Okay then, earthbending is a grounded style and focuses on defense as oppose to offence. This difference is most notable between firebenders. Firebenders are heavily offensive when it comes to fighting, a complete opposite for an earthbender who's endurance and patience is more adept than that of firebending. Though that is of course just a generalization. Because you and I both know that there are plenty of earthbenders who would prefer a forward assault over the patient method. The might of earthbending is seen plenty of times, but the some of the most impressive symbols of this style come from the great cities formed from it. Omashu and Ba Sing Se were great examples of displaying the Earth Kingdom and it's residence will to stand still and proud from cities who's walls were made from the benders of old. I mean come on the story of Omashu was always one of our favorites." said the voice
"That it was and still is. Oma and Shu, the two lovers. Learning from the badgermoles and then forming underground tunnels to meet each other in secret." said Joseph
"That is of course until Shu gets sent out to a battlefield, proceeding to die as a result." said the voice
"And then Oma comes through and stops the fighting. Then erecting one of the Earth Kingdom's greatest capitals that would stand until the surrender of Bumi. That is until the mad bastard took the city back during the solar eclipse." Joseph finished.
"Another favorite moment in the story." said the voice
"Okay enough getting sidetracked, earthbending and how to utilize it more or at least how to hone the skill more. I think that information would be good right now." Joseph said scratching his chin.
"Hmm I suggest you find any area with some solid ground. Not a beach, we can try sandbending later. You should try concentrating on the actual feeling of the earth. As if you were holding it and moving it in your hands without moving it. In fact this gives us a perfect gateway to talk about the last element and what I think might be your weakest element probably, though it is too early to say just yet. Waterbending." said the voice
"Okay waterbending about time. Lay it on me." said Joseph waiting.
"Alright water is considered the element of change. Waterbenders use their enemies momentum against them to to deliver a strong counter assault. A waterbender also relies on the power of the moon, unlike firebenders who rely upon the sun. So like firebending, an eclipse or more specifically a lunar eclipse will prevent you from waterbending. Waterbenders are also great at adapting to their surroundings and in most situations that could prove dangerous. Healing techniques using waterbending is also another handy skill used by the women of the water tribes. Who knows if we could even figure that one out. Unlike the other bending styles, waterbending relies solely on the power of the moon." said the voice
"The moon huh?" Joseph said
"Yes the moon. Remember the koi fish?"
"Yeah, Zhao killed one of them. Aang went full avatar state and fucked up the fire nation fleet. Then Yue sacrifices herself to bring back the moon. I just felt bad for Sokka, I mean the girl you liked just straight up became the moon. Bad luck am I right." said Joseph
"Yeah I know right." said the voice
"Well I think it's best if we continue eh." said Joseph
"Anyways on to why I think it might be your weakest element. Aang had elements that he struggled with. It either had to do with the elements counter in regards to their preferred element or their was some mental restriction on them that kept them from performing well at using that particular element. For example Aang had issues with earth because he was first trained as an airbender and the principles of earth go against the teachings of the nomads. Also when Aang had attempted to use firebending the first time. The incident caused him to fear the destructive aspect of fire until he visits the sun warriors temple with Zuko to learn a different way of firebending from Ren and Shaw. It's clear that you can use multiple elements and while fire and earth are okay. I think you should relax and try not to force the power out. Just breathe and let the energy flow, you know something Iroh would most likely say." said the voice
"Now while that was enlightening. I have a feeling we skimmed over a few details." said Joseph
"Probably, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I can only remember so much at one time. So if I do remember something I tell you." the voice responded
Joseph stood up and looked out to the sea with a weird look on his face.
"Do you think we will ever see home again?" asked Joseph
"I do not know. I only know as much as you do, for we are the same." the voice responded
"Apart from general survival purposes, I don't see the reason to practice so much with bending to be completely honest with you." said Joseph with a sunken expression.
"I thought I mentioned why we need to do this. The reason why it is important to train these new found abilities is because for one fire can be used for heat, cooking food and as a source of light. Water can be used to drink, heal and catch fish to eat. Earth can be used to make sturdy earth structures to live in and air is a bonus element. Plus the training from all of this will keep you healthy and somewhat in shape, It can also keep your mind off of home for a couple of hours. That is plenty enough reason to train. If that's not enough for then think about it like this, If you trained your abilities to an exceptional level then maybe we can bend our way off of this island." stated the voice
"I guess so, I mean it's not like I have anything better to do. Who knows this might be fun." said Joseph trying to lighten up.
"If I can keep it together, you can as well. Remember you have got me and the knowledge of the avatar world on our side. If a twelve year old can pull it off in a few months, then who's to say we can't either eh?" said the voice
"Alright why the fuck not, let's get started then." said Joseph with a little more vigor.
"Okay then! Hahahaha." the voice laughed.
Joseph walks back the water to try once more to bend the water, distracting himself from his isolation. But will his new determination last as time passes while he resides on this lonely land mass.
Next Chapter: The Resistance
Alright that was the first chapter in my new story. I hope you enjoyed it.
So let me discuss what's going down. This main character can use the power of bending in order to survive in the harsh world of One Piece. Now I have purposefully left out certain details in the voice's description. So don't worry to much about that.
Let me explain some of the positives and negatives of his powers, Because even with the elemental versatility their are limitations in power of his abilities. Especially when comparing him to a logia type devil fruit user like Ace. Now this is only a few positives and negatives I'll add more information on it as the story progresses.
- A solar eclipse prevents him from using firebending.
- A lunar eclipse prevents him from using waterbending.
- A full moon would strengthen his waterbending throughout it's duration.
- He has the possibility of learning other sub bending techniques such as sandbending, metalbending and lightning generation etc.(But would have to train in using them to achieve a new level of skill as with all of his abilities.)
- His fighting style is more of a hybrid style of boxing mixed with the four bending styles.
- He is able to learn these skills much faster because he has seen how the characters in The last Air Bender and the Legend of Korra managed to accomplish them or at the very least used them in combat. (So don't be to shocked he can do said skills in a short period of time.)
- Despite knowing how the characters in both shows managed to accomplish these skills, Joseph still has to train in order to utilize the same skill. (Both how to use it in general and how to utilize it in combat situations.)
This is the small outline of what he can do so far. Again I will add more as this story progresses.
I hope you enjoy this chapter of Justice and hope to see you next time :)
