TLOU Story Summary: Ellie is now sixteen and she has been living in Jackson with Joel for a little more of a year now. As she does not have too many friends, she is trying to connect with the one she works with within the small town. Are October and some of the teens want to celebrate Halloween day. But since people in Jackson don't like to celebrate that, they sneak out of town and go to an abandoned resort not far away from the town. But things do not always go the way they wanted.
A/N: I wanted to do a Halloween story since it is one of the holiday stories I was doing that I hadn't made yet. I wanted to do it a few years ago, but never found the time or what to write since TLOU is already a horror scenery. But ready a story from a friend, she adds and ghosts part on the story that I found interesting, so that gives me the inspiration I need for finale make this one. It was going to be a one-shot, but it went too long so I have to split it into two parts. I hope you like it, even if it is not too good, but I wanted to do one so here we go.
"Jackson's Halloween Day"
Part-1
It was late October in Jackson, winter was getting closer fast and the mountain area was starting to get colder. But no matter what, some of the teenage kids in Jackson were preparing a little trip to an abandoned resort in the north part of town for a Halloween night. Kids under 18 were forbidden to go out of town unless they went with a group of adult people to search or explore the closer areas of Jackson. But even that, some of the teens are going to sneak out to have some fun out of town.
It was Ellie's first Halloween in Jackson or anywhere because people in Boston or in any other places don't like to celebrate that anymore. Kids that burn after the apocalypse don't know much about things like that. They only know stories about kids going out in costume and asking for candy house to house. Some older folks in Jackson like to scare kids with ghost stories and monsters. But Tommy and Maria don't like people talking or celebrating any of that, because the world is already full of monsters. But even so, some kids are always curious about things like that, but kids sometimes want to do a Halloween gathering without older people knowing about it.
Ellie is 16 now and it's been only a year since Joel and she arrived in Jackson. It was good to be received with open hands by Tommy and Maria, even after she noticed the bad history between Joel and his brother the last time they're there. She asks him a few times what happened between them, but Joel doesn't like to talk much about his past. He doesn't want to talk about what happened with the fireflies, but she does. She doesn't want to pressure him about that subject. She was curious about what happened because that part of the story he tells her does not make any sense. Anyway, she is enjoying life in Jackson so far and the house that Tommy arranged for them after a few weeks in Jackson.
It was good to live behind walls and be safe from the infected and hunters, even if those attacked the place sometimes. The house that Tommy and Maria give them has needed some repair, but Joel works on that fast and makes it habitable for them in a few weeks. All people on Jackson have to do their part for the survival of the community so Joel and her do their part too. Ellie helps Maria on the farms and animals while Joel helps with repairs and construction around town. It was with the few teens that work on the little farm with her, that Ellie found out about the Halloween trip.
"So… are you coming with us or not?" asked Jesse while looking at Ellie. He was 18 so practically he was the only one in age to go out of Jackson.
"I don't know… I do not want Joel to get into trouble with Tommy because of me going out without permission," answer Ellie with a timid voice.
"Ahhhh… nothing is going to happen, girl," said Dina while moving closer to the group. We do it a few times and no one ever finds out. People are always so busy that they do not notice us around."
"Yeah… and besides, the place Jesse is talking about is not far from here. We can sneak out of Jackson after the sun goes down and no one will know." said another of the teens there.
"Why do all of you want to go out to celebrate Halloween anyway? People here said that Halloween is something they want to forget about. That is why they do not celebrate that here." said Ellie while looking at the group of teens in front of her.
Dina moves closer to her and puts her arm around Ellie's shoulder and smiles. "That is why we want to do it. I hear from my mom that it was fun to sit around a fire and tell scary stories, back in her time."
"Yeah… people don't like it because of the pandemic, but a few years ago an old man told us some good scary story and it was fun… so we want to do that," said Samy, another teen that is the same age as Ellie.
"So… are you coming with us?" asked Jesse again. "It's going to be fun… just the six of us."
"C'mon… What did you say?" asked Dina while shaking Ellie's body. "Is only for a few hours okay… we will be back before the sun goes up," she added, trying to convince Ellie.
Ellie starts thinking about what Joel will say if he finds out she sneaks out of Jackson, but he told her to make friends and so far this gang is the closest to that. Yeah they work together and they know each other for almost a year, but her real friends are only Dina and Jesse. After a few minutes, she answered them. "Okay… I'm in."
"Yayyyyy," all of them said at once.
Dina hugs her hard as a happy gesture on her agreement to go with them. "That is great girl… we're going to have so much fun… you will see."
"Okay then, we have a party for tomorrow night," said Jesse with a happy tone. "Now, the only thing we need to do is gather the things we need for the trip tonight, and tomorrow we all go to the abandoned house on the east wall at 6:00 pm and sneak out," said Jesse while looking at the rest of the group.
"Okay… guys... let's have a Halloween night," said Andrea, the other girl in the group.
The next day the teens gather in the abandoned house where Jesse and Dina have a secret way to get out of town without the guards or any other people knowing it.
They use it a few times to get out and go to the river that moves the hydro plant in the dam and give now the electricity they need in town. They mostly use it during the summer when the weather is warmer and they can go swimming. So after all of them arrive at the place, they go out of Jackson and start walking toward the resort that was a few miles up the mountains.
"So… Ellie, can you tell us more about you?" asked Andrea while walking behind her. She was the last member to join the group so she doesn't know much about Ellie. I don't know about the other, but I practically don't know anything about you… except that you live with your dad in the north part of town."
Ellie doesn't know what to say, as her past life and her condition have to be kept secret. "I don't know what to tell you… my life is not as interesting as you think… I just came here from Boston with Joel… and he is…" she stopped, trying not to say too much about her and Joel or all the things they did before arriving in Jackson.
"Ohhhh… wow. Did you come all the way here from there?" She said with an excited tone. " That will be a hell of a trip… Did you have to fight a lot of infected?"
Dina moved quickly between them as soon she saw Ellie's face. "Hey… we all came here to have a good time, not to interrogate each other." She said while putting her arm around Ellie's shoulder to shield her from the annoying girl.
"Sorry, I just want to know more about Ellie since I-" she was interrupted by Jesse's hand on her shoulder.
"Is okay Andrea, we will have time to know more about each other at another time." Said Jesse while pushing Andrea away from the other two girls. " We still have one hour of walking, so keep your eyes open guys. I don't want to get into any surprises."
After that, the group keeps walking up the mountain, and lucky for them, they do not see any infected people or hunters. Ellie came with her knife just in case and the other brought some bats and pipe with them, but none of them could bring any guns. They talk about work and other things they do on the way. Dina stays close to Ellie, just to keep Andrea from asking more questions about her. After walking for another hour Jesse stopped as soon he saw the resort in the distance.
"Okay guys we're here," said Jesse pointing to the building. The others walk forward until all of them are on the tree line that divides the place from the forest. The place was like a big motel but was more elegant back in the days. The place only had two floors and a lot of room for what they could see. Also, it has a few small buildings around it but most of them were destroyed by nature, only the main building was in decent condition. "Okay, I found this place a few months ago on a scouting trip. It was clean of infected, but we need to be careful because a lot can happen in that period of time. So watch out for any infected people that can get inside."
"Ahhhh… don't worry dude… we came prepared for those," said Dany, who was one of the other males that came with them. "I can kill any infected that come after us." Ellie rolled her eyes at the ignorant teenage boy, no matter if he was a year older than her.
"Yeah sure… I bet that you never get surrendered by a lot of them… because if that happens I can tell you that the only option you have... is running."
Jesse turns his head and looks at them. "I don't care who is better at killing the infected and just pray that we don't find any in there," said Jesse while walking toward the main building.
The others follow him until they all arrive at the parking lot in front of it. There were a few rusted cars there and they were already covered by undergrowth. Also, that covered part of the building too. The six teens walked to the entrance with their blunt weapons in hand and stopped in front of the main door.
After a few minutes of staring at the entrance, one of the girls spoke. "So are we going in or not?"
Ellie moves forward and goes close to the door. "We better check if there is no one in there."
"Ellie is right… let check the front window and see if the place is-" Jesse starts but stops when Andrea grabs the knob and starts to open the door. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Making a decision for all of you…wussies,'' said Andrea while walking inside the place. The girl enters the lobby and starts looking around. "I don't know why you take so many precautions, this place is abandoned and I bet that no one is here." The others followed her in but got ready for anything.
"You should not be so careless… you don't know what you can find in a place like this," said Ellie while taking her knife out.
Andrea moved to the main desk and started to hit the ding that was on top of it. After hitting the thing a few times and seeing that no one showed up, she looked back at the others. "See!... there is no one here… so stop worrying so much and let's have some fun."
Ellie rolled her eyes at the annoying girl. "Maybe there is no one in the lobby… but we don't know about the rest of the place," she said aloud.
"Whatever… and I don't know who makes you the expert here… but I will say that we are good here," said the girl while moving away from the front desk and walking behind it. She looks at some of the keys that stay hanging on the wall. "Hey, do you think that they had a big fancy room for us?" All the others rolled their eyes and turned around to check the place.
Ellie walks to a room that is beside the lobby that still has some chairs and tables. She starts looking at the place and a few minutes later, Dina joins her. "So are you ready for a scary Halloween night?" she said to Ellie while grabbing her shoulder with her arm.
Elle looks at the nail windows before answering. "I'm not really into that… I just came… because Joel wants me to have more interaction with my friends."
Dina smiled at that and after a few minutes, the girl released her. "Yeah… I know." Dina moved away and went to the window that was all covered with wood planks. "Don't worry girl... you will have more friends soon enough… you just need to open yourself more… But we're here for you… well, I can't say much about Andrea, she can be a real jerk sometimes."
"Yeah, tell me about it." Both girls laugh at the comment. "So… we're really going to spend some of the night here?" she asked Dina.
"Well… that was the plan…" she said with a doubtful tone.
Ellie looks at her with her eyes wide open. "What do you mean by that? You told me that we were going to stay here only a few hours."
"Yes... I told you that, but Jesse thought that it would be too dangerous to-" she started but got interrupted by one of the boys entering the room.
"Hey… did one of you see where Andrea and Dany go?" said Samy as soon as he saw them.
Both girls turn their heads and look at the boy. "No, but I think that Andrea goes to the other side," said Dina.
"I think she goes upstairs… I think she said that she wants to find a bigger room…" said Ellie while walking toward the boy.
"Where is Jesse?" asked Dina before the three of them hear a scream coming from the distance. "What the hell was that?"
"I don't know but it sounds like Andrea…" said Samy while turning around and running toward the lobby. Ellie and Dina followed him until the three of them arrived there and saw Jesse coming from the other side.
"Did all of you hear that?" Jesse says as soon as he sees Dina and the others.
"It came from up the stairs…" said Samy looking up.
"Maybe they found an infected… c'mon…" said Ellie running toward the stairs with her knife in hand. The other grabs their blunt weapons and follows Ellie up the stairs. Soon they got to the second floor, they started to look both ways of the corridor.
"Ok... we need to split out," Jesse started when another scream came from one of the rooms on the right side of the corridor. "This way guys..." he said while running in the direction of the scream. Soon they arrive at the front of the room, Jesse opens the door and sees Andrea on top of a bed screaming again. "Where are the infected?" asked Jesse with his bat in hand ready to strike.
"What infected? It was only a rat," said Dany while walking out of the bathroom.
"Did you kill it?" yell Andrea standing on the top of the bed.
"Really! You did all those screams for a rat?" said Ellie rolling her eyes.
The girl turned her head and looked at her. "If you saw the side of that thing... you will scream too." All the teens rolled their eyes and turned around. They all walk out of the room leaving the girl and Dany inside.
A few minutes later all the teens were back in the lobby, but by that time it was already dark outside. "Okay guys, let's see if the fireplace works," said Jesse while clapping his hands together and looking at the others. "Dany, can you get some wood for the fire?"
"Sure… are we going to stay here for the entire night? Or we will try one of the rooms" he asked while walking around to pick up a few things that are made of wood.
"Well that was the plan… right?" answer, Andrea. Get in front of the fire and tell scary stories.
"Knowing you… you will be running out as soon as we start," said Dina with a mocking tone.
"Wow… wow… I didn't agree to stay here all night," said Ellie entering the conversation. "You said that we will stay a few hours only and-" she was interrupted by a big thunder sound coming from outside.
"Ahhhh… fuck… I'm scared of thunder..." yell Andrea while moving closer to Dany and hugging him.
"What the hell was that?" said Dany while another thunder shakes the resort and the lighting illuminates the lobby. All of them moved to the entrance and opened the front door to see the rain starting to fall down outside.
"Oh… Well… now we have to stay here by force," says Samy while turning around and looking at Ellie.
Dina moved close to Ellie and put her arm on her shoulder. "Look at the bright side of this… is not going to be our fault if we get back late."
"I don't see any good in that…" said Ellie with a resigned tone. "We will be stuck here all night.
"Ok let's start the fire and get the food out of our backpack... I'm hungry," said Dany while walking back to the center of the lobby.
"Yeah, and after we eat something, we can check this place out a little to make sure that there is not any infected here," said Jesse while walking after him
Two hours later the teens were sitting in the lobby close to the fireplace. The rain was still falling hard and thunder and lightning could be seen and heard outside. "So who is going to start first?" said Dany while putting some snacks in his mouth.
"Start what?" asked Ellie.
"The ghost stories of curse… that is the purpose of this Halloween trip… is it?" he answered back.
"Are you serious? Where stock in an abandoned resort in the middle of the forest, with a lot of rain falling outside and you want to tell ghost stories?" said Ellie not believing these people.
"Yeah… that is why all of us came here… right? Besides the rain and all of that is perfect for the stories, it will give them a little scary climax," said Dany while looking at Ellie. "Besides, what do you think we're going to do here for Halloween?" he answered with a mystery tone.
"I don't know... no stay here on a night like this... for started," said Ellie turning her head and looking toward Dina.
"What!" I didn't know it was going to rain… like this," she answered quickly.
"Yeah… but all of you were planning to stay here all night from the beginning… without telling me," she said with a betrayal tone.
"I don't care about the reason to stay here all night… this is our Halloween party, so let's start it."
The teens stay sitting close to the fire and start to tell stories that they saw on tv or movies. They start to scare each other by telling the scared one. One hour later, Jesse has to go to the bathroom, so he leaves the other in the lobby while he goes to do his business. While Jesse was gone, Samy started with his scary story, when he saw Dina grab Ellie's arm hard.
"Shhhhh! Did you hear that?" said Dina looking toward the stairs that go up to the second floor. Samy stops talking and looks toward the stairs too.
"I don't hear anything…" said Samy before turning his head and looking at Ellie. "Did you hear anything?"
"No!" she answered.
Dina stands up and starts walking toward the stairs. "It sounds like a door being opened slowly up there." Soon she arrived at the button of the stair she looked up. "Do you think… is it Jesse? Or you think that is an infected up there?" said Dina while looking at Samy and Ellie.
A few minutes later Jesse walks out from the backroom behind the counter and walks toward her. "What are you doing there?" he asked with a curious tone.
Dina looks at him. So now that one of her questions is answered, she needs to know if it is the other one. "I hear something up there… it can be infected or something," Dina answers him.
That is impossible... We check all the room up there and we don't find anything… not even spore."
Dina turned her head and looked at him. "I swear Jesse… I hear something up there and if not you there's someone up there. Maybe we should go up and check the second floor."
"Well, I didn't hear anything… Do you guys hear something?" said Jesse while turning around and looking at the fireplace where the others were.
"No!" Ellie stands up and looks at Samy. "Did you hear something?"
"No…" he answered while standing up from a chair too.
"Where's Andrea and Dany?" Jesse asked when he didn't see them there.
Ellie and Samy turned around and looked at the two empty chairs. "They… they said that they needed to go to the bathroom a few minutes ago, but they have not come back yet," said Samy looking at Jesse now.
"Those two assholes were saying that they wanted to go upstairs to explore the place more… they are probably the ones making all those sounds to scare us," said Ellie while looking at Dina.
"No… it can't be them… they were here a few minutes ago… and the sound came-" she stopped when the sound of a door could be heard from upstairs. "See… there it is again."
Ellie starts to walk toward the stair with a mad expression. "I'm going to kill those two if I find out that they are behind this." Ellie continues walking up the stairs and Dina starts to follow her.
Jesse turns around and looks at Samy. "Are you coming?" he asked.
"I will stay here and see if they are hiding somewhere on the ground floor," he answered.
"Okay… but if you find them, tell them that they're in big trouble." After that Jesse starts climbing the stairs to follow Ellie and Dina.
As soon Ellie got to the second floor, she used her flashlight to illuminate the corridor and started yelling Andrea and Dany names. "Hey, you motherfuckers… I know you two are trying to scare us and that is not funny," yell Ellie while pointing the light to both sides of the corridor.
"Hey… do you think it is a good idea to yell? What if they are really infected here?" asked Dina, a little nervous.
Ellie turns her head and looks at her. "There is no infected here… we check the place, remember? Is them and when I-" she stops when another door closing sound comes from some part in the corridor. "Gotcha!" said Ellie before starting running in the direction of the sound.
"Hey… wait for me…" said Dina running after her.
Ellie ran into the corridor and got to the room where the door sound came from. "Ok, I know you two are in there so get out before I-" Ellie was going to grab the handle of the door, but the door opened by itself. "What the hell?" said Ellie with a surprised tone. The others arrive a few minutes later and stand behind Ellie.
"Hey did you see that!... The door opened by himself… I think this place is haunted…" said Samy with a scary voice.
Jesse turned his head and looked at him. "I thought you said that you will stay downstairs?"
"Yes… but it goes so scary down there… that I decided to come with you guys," he said with a nervous voice. "Besides, I do not want to be alone with ghosts moving around here."
"Don't be ridiculous… there are no such things as a haunted house or ghosts or whatever you think this is," said Jesse while rolling his eyes.
"Is them…" said Ellie while walking into the room and starting checking it out with her flashlight. I know you two are in here… so it is better if you come out before I get really mad…" Said Ellie while looking around the room. Ellie points her flashlight around the room but doesn't see anybody there.
The other stayed at the entrance of the room looking inside. "See! I told you this place is haunted… maybe it will be good if we get out of here when we can," said Samy with a scared voice.
Dina looked at him and rolled her eyes. "Are you serious? You are scared of ghosts more than infected people?"
"Well… yes. Infected people you can kill, but ghosts… is something different," he answered back.
Ellie starts to move out of the room and passes between them. "There are no ghosts in here… is just Andrea and Dany… and when I find them-'' Ellie stops when a sound of another door opening can be heard on the other side of the corridor. "Gotcha!" said Ellie running toward the sound.
"Hey… wait for us!" said Dina while running after her.
Downstairs Andrea and Dany were in the manager's office looking at some papers and things in the room. "Did you think that it was a good idea to come here and don't tell the others? I don't know about you, but I don't like walking around this place alone… it gave me the crip…" said Dany while looking at a painting on the wall.
"Ahhhh! Don't be such a baby… did you don't say early that you can kill any infected that come your way?" said Andrea while looking at some old paper on top of the manager's desk.
"Yeah… I said that but infected people are not the same as ghosts… and I think Samy was right when he thought that this place is haunted… I have been hearing things since we arrived here."
Andrea raises her head and looks toward Dany and gives him a look. "You too? There is no such thing as a ghost… believe me if-'' she stops when a sudden sound comes from a book stan on the wall.
Dany turns around and points the flashlight toward the book stan. "Did you hear that?" he said with a scary voice.
"It has to be the wind or something… places like this are so old that-" she stops when a book moves out from his place and lands on the floor.
"Did you see that?" said Dany pointing the light toward the book on the floor.
"Is the wind…" Said Andrea with a nervous voice, but as soon as she said that a wind sound came from behind the book stan and they could feel it inside the room. "Did you feel that?" A few minutes later, a lot of books start to fly out from the stan and toward them.
"Arrggghhhh!... shit…" the boy screamed as soon he dodged the books that came his way. "I don't think that is the wind… I'm out of here…" he said while running toward the door of the room, but before he got to it, the door closed violently. Dany quickly drops the flashlight to the floor and grabs the doorknob and tries to open it. "Shit!... is stock…" he yells while continuing trying to open the door.
Andrea stays behind the desk paralyzed of fear as some of the books that go her way pass beside her... "There's no ghost… there is no ghost…" she said to herself before other things in the room started flaying her way. "ARGHHHHHHH!" she screams as soon some hits her and runs toward the door. "Open the door... open the door… I need to get out of here..." she yelled to Dany who was trying to open it without any luck.
"WHO DARE TO ENTER HERE?" a loud voice came from the other side of the room making both teens turn around and scream when a traducing man appeared in front of them. "YOU'RE MINE NOW!"
"ARGHHHHHHH!"
On the second floor, the others hear the louder scream coming from downstairs. "Is that Andrea?" said Jesse while turning his head toward the other end of the corridor.
"What the hell are they doing?" said Dina looking that way too. "If she is downstairs, who is the one making noise up here?"
"It has to be Dany…" said Jesse, before hearing Dany scream too."
"Is the ghost I'm telling you…" a louder thunder sound outside making the teens jump. A flash of lightning illuminated the place too, revealing a small shadow at the end of the corridor and despair as the lighting ends. "Did you see that?" asked Samy with a trembling voice.
"See what?" asked Ellie while looking at the corridor.
Soon after that, a few doors start to open and close by themself. Soon Samy saw that he turned around and started running toward the stairs. "I don't know about any of you… but I'm out of here…" he yelled while passing Dina, Jesse, and Ellie and getting to the stairs.
"ARGHHHHHHH!" Andrea and Dany scream at the same time as soon as the apparition floats toward them. "NOOOO!" They both close their eyes and turn their head to the side before the ghost gets closer to them.
They feel a cold wing go through them in a second. "ARGHHHHHHH!" They scream again before all get quiet again. A minute later they open their eyes and see if the ghost is still there, but it is gone. "What the fuck was that?" yells Dany while looking around the room.
"I don't know… but I don't want to stay here to find out…" she turned around and grabbed Dany's shirt and pulled him close to her face. "so... I suggest that you open… THE FUCKING DOOR!" Dany turns around and starts to force the door open again and after a few minutes, it gets open. Both teens got out of the room quickly and closed the door.
"Left, find the others and get out of here," said Dany while starting to run toward the lobby. After a few minutes, they arrived at the lobby and saw Samy running down the stairs and went there to meet with him at the bottom. But the teen was running so fast that they crash into each other as soon as Samy gets to the button of the stairs. The three of them fall down to the floor hard.
"What the hell are you doing?" Asked Samy while trying to get up. "You almost killed me…"
"There is something here… and we need to go… now!" said Andrea with a scary voice.
"Yeah… this place is haunted…" said Dany.
The three got up and ran toward the front door. But soon Samy grabbed the knob, the door was tight closed too. He tries to force it open, but he can't. "Fuck… the door won't open." he continues trying before Dany pushes him away and start trying himself.
After a few minutes, Ellie and the others arrive in the lobby and walk toward them. "You!... you're the one behind all this…" said Ellie pointing to Andrea.
Andrea turns around and looks at her with scared eyes. "No… I didn't… Samy was right, this place is haunted and there is someone here that doesn't let us out."
Ellie walks closer and grabs the girl's shirt with both hands and pulls her closer. "There is nothing in here… except you and Dany trying to scare us, but that goes too far," said Ellie with a mad voice.
"It wasn't us… I swear!" said Andrea with a scared tone. "There is something here… we saw it."
Ellie pushed Andrea to the front door hard. "Bullshit!... it was you and I going to-" she stopped when another loud thunder shook the place.
Dany moves closer to them and starts to push Ellie away from Andrea. "It wasn't us… if you are going to blame someone… blame Jesse. He was the one that brought us here… and he knew about this place before inviting us here." he said trying to resonate with Ellie to let Andrea go.
Jesse up his hand. "Wow… wow… I didn't know anything about this place. I just found it on a trip, so don't blame me."
"I don't care whose fault is… I just need to get out of here…" said Samy while turning around and trying to open the door again.
After Dany finally makes Ellie move away from Andrea, he looks at Samy. "You're wasting your time… the door won't open."
"What do you mean the door won't open?" asked Dina looking at him.
"This place is haunted… I'm telling you and now someone here is not going to let us go."
"Are you serious? This is not one of your ghost story tales…" said Ellie while walking toward the door. "Move to the side…" she said to Samy, then tried to open the door herself. After a few minutes, she stopped trying after the door didn't open.
"Great… now we're stuck here," said Dina while rolling her eyes.
Ellie moves away from the door and looks at the others. "No, we're not… This place has to have another door that we can use to get out… or maybe we can break a window and get out that way."
"Yeah, that will work if the first floor has any window to break… if all of you remember all the windows down here are nailed with wood planks," said Andrea.
