Harry goes missing, and the only one left the rest of the trio can turn to is Draco Malfoy, despite the fact that they have the soulmarks, they had never gotten together until Draco comes to his rescue and proves himself worthy of a second chance.
"Stupid mark," Draco complained, rubbing his wrist. Who would have ever guessed he would exchange one mark for another? There had been something in the Dark Mark that had stopped the soulmark from manifesting, so it took hold shortly after Voldemort was defeated. Initially, Draco had been excited about it. He believed this meant he finally got to move on with his life, and that he didn't need to be alone anymore. Then, he found out it was Potter. He didn't know what to think about it, but he had hoped that now that it was all over, they could start over. It wasn't like he had any choice. But disappointment came quickly and stubbornly.
"Give me your hand," Draco had said to him.
"No," Potter shook his head. "This doesn't change everything." Then he watched his soulmate turn tail and walk away from him.
His soulmark was warm, and he knew something was going on with Potter. But, there was nothing to do about it, after all; Potter hadn't wanted to accept their bond, even when they realized they had each other as soul mates. It seemed both of them were hesitant to put the past behind them. Draco tossed and turned, shoving his arm under a pillow to not feel the heat that was causing his heart to race.
Danger.
He checked the time, 2 AM, it was way too early to be awake. Yet sleep still eluded him for a couple of hours before he drifted into an uneasy sleep. That's when the nightmare started.
Potter was trapped in a cave. Draco watched him suck in a deep breath.
"Shit," Potter exclaimed. His wand seemed to be away from him, and he couldn't seem to Apparate out of the area. Draco felt the chill in the air, pulling his own sheets subconsciously up higher to try to stop the cold air, but it wasn't in his room. Potter was shivering. He saw the thoughts whirling in Potters' head.
Draco wanted to say. "No, you idiot! You will run out of air if you make a fire,"but unfortunately, that wasn't how their link worked.
Har- Potter gathered some sticks, and made a fire, warming his hands by rubbing them together.
"Moron," Draco thought savagely.
Their thoughts, and sometimes even what they saw, were often linked during times of extreme emotion.
"I wish Hermione was here," Potter murmured. This shot a prang of jealousy through Draco's body. Despite their bond, and him knowing that he had no romantic feelings for Granger. As much as he wished he could get over it, he was still in love with Potter, and jealous of those in his life.
He remembered their time before everyone left. He had realized that Potter definitely has a preference for blonds. He knew that Harry was attracted to him, and to that Lovegood girl. So his soulmate had a type.
Draco woke again to a knock on the Manor doors, and he woke up with a sigh. "This better be important," he muttered, pulling on a maroon dress robe and walking downstairs. Once he was awake enough to remember his dream it was clear before the front doors of the Manor swung open just who was standing outside it - Weasley and Granger. Draco sighed. "Come on in then," he nodded, standing aside for them to come in.
"I assume you've seen him?" Granger asked. Draco just nodded. He wondered if she could tell he had nightmares from his face, or just because Potter was missing and she assumed the worst.
"What makes you think it wasn't a regular old nightmare?" Draco attempted in vain.
Granger just looked at him indignantly.
"Fine, let's go sit in the kitchen, please. I could use some coffee."
While Weasley looked oddly at him because of his polite greeting, Granger knew better. During the time after the war, Draco had turned to Granger for help, trying to get Potter to give him a chance. He worked with Granger at the Ministry, and they had become somewhat friendly since he matured. They talked over coffee, and eventually he agreed to go and look for Potter, despite him knowing that Potter didn't want him to come after him.
Draco got his things together, some emergency supplies, a map, a torch, his wand, and a charmed compass as well and Apparted to the area where they had lost contact with Potter. His heart was clenching. Despite knowing that Potter didn't want him, he knew that they must have been desperate to come to him; knowing the danger was real, scared Draco a lot.
He arrived outside a mountain and the rock formations reminded him of those he had seen in the dream. He walked around, looking for a cave opening. "You idiot, why did you need to lose your wand," he muttered. He came across a couple of caves, but they all looked shallow and ended before he needed to use a "Lumos,". He sat down eventually, exhausted. He rummaged through his bags, grabbing a marshmallow packet and a flash of water.
He sat thinking for a while, feeling utterly defeated. Then thoughts of Potter invaded his mind.
"I knew they would send him," Potter was complaining. Draco tried to focus on the details on the wall, trying to find some way of finding his location.
"Where are you?" Draco tried to chant in his mind, Potter always tried his best to ignore their link, but now he replied.
"Lost," he muttered.
Draco sighed dramatically.
"Potter, you know I wouldn't be here to save your ass if you could do it yourself."
"Fine," Potter muttered. "Try going North, make sure you go about ⅔ of the way up, and then you should find the cave entrance. I think it's a couple of miles into the cave where the rocks collapsed on my wand."
Armed with the new information, Draco continued his travels around the mountain. He followed his compass, making sure he kept North. The sun was sinking from the sky as he reached the cave. This was it, he could feel it. His heart was racing. Despite the danger his soul mate was in, he couldn't help but be secretly happy to see him again. Then he sucked in a breath, and realized what it meant- he needed to hurry, Potter was running out of air.
He rushed through the cave, and as the light of the entrance disappeared, he cast "Lumos." Not stopping, he had to reach Potter before it was too late. He bent over in pain, feeling breathless. "Hold on," Draco said, trying to calm his soulmate.
"Just let me die," he heard Potter complaining.
"I am almost there!" Draco shouted, it echoed through the cave, and he knew he was going the right way. He found the cave-in, and paused. He needed to be careful. The cave wasn't very deep and he needed to make sure he didn't cause a larger cave in by trying to remove the blockages. "Shit," Draco exclaimed. Then Draco made a move that surprised Potter - he dropped everything, and tried to remove the smaller rocks with his bare hands. "I'm just getting some airflow through while I think," Draco muttered as he worked. He felt his airways no longer constricted, and realized he did it - Potter was getting air into the area where he was trapped, he had broken through the blockade, even if it was so small that he couldn't get through.
Then Draco took his wand, and started levitating some of the larger rocks from the top of the pile, making sure not to trap himself in the process. Once there was an opening at the top large enough for a person to crawl through, he climbed up, and saw Potter. Potter was looking tired and covered in dirt, and he didn't think Potter would be strong enough to get through on his own.
"Give me your hand," Draco said, "I can pull you up."
He had never seen Potter look so haggard, it felt as if he had given up. Then Potter reached out with both hands. Once Draco touched him, something changed between them. Draco didn't flinch, just continued to pull Harry up onto the rocks; once they were out, Draco half carried him from the cave. Outside the sky was covered in flickering collapsed in a sweaty heap. Draco made a fire, and while Harry remained quiet, he put a marshmallow on a stick, and turned it around in the fire. Once it was toasted, he removed it from the fire, and handed Harry the stick. Then Draco took out his flask and took a swig of water. While Harry was eating, Draco started tending to his cuts and bruises. "Ouch," Harry exclaimed.
"Shut up and eat, Harry," Draco exclaimed. Harry continued to eat marshmallows as Draco worked.
"Why don't you just Apparate us back?" Harry asked a couple of minutes later.
"Because you aren't strong enough," Draco explained. It was a testament to his tiredness that Harry didn't argue.
When Draco awoke the next morning, he noticed his surroundings. He was on a mountain, and he could see the rising sun. He also saw his soulmate sleeping, cuddled up against him. He didn't wake Harry. He waited quietly until the emerald eyes flickered open by themselves. "Oh, you did save me after all," Harry said softly, sitting up slowly. It was clear to Draco that he wasn't trying to put distance between him, and the thought made him happy.
"Of course I did, you moron," Draco said. Harry's eyes widened, Draco bet it was because there was a fondness in his voice it never held before.
"Thank you," Harry said.
"Let's take you home, shall we?" Draco asked, making sure the embers in the fire were completely extinguished.
"Can I come home with you?" Harry asked. Draco simply nodded.
"Of course, Harry. I can take care of you now."
The two Apparated home, and Draco put Harry straight in his bed. Then he got his owl to send a message to Granger. Once she replied he made some soup and went upstairs to take care of his soul mate. Things had definitely changed in an instant, but it was long overdue.
