The day came for graduation. They were finally going to graduate from high school, and they could barely contain their excitement. Both of them passed their classes with flying colors, and now all that was left was to be called up to receive their diplomas. On the ride to the place where the ceremony was being held, Prompto sat next to Noctis, holding his hand tightly.
"Wish we could actually sit together during the ceremony."
"That would've been awesome, but fortunately, this will be the last ceremony where we'll have different last names." Noctis said without thinking.
"Huh? What are you thinking, Noct?" Prompto said as he leaned in a bit closer to his boyfriend.
Noctis felt his cheeks burn some before he shook his head. "Oh, nothing." He replied as he just pulled Prompto in close to give his cheek a kiss.
"Hmmm? Nothing you say?" Prompto pried.
"Nothing for right now." Noctis replied as he narrowed his eyes at Prompto.
Prompto pouted. "Okay fine. I guess I'll just have to wait to see whatever it is you're thinking."
"Promise, nothing bad. Just enjoy the mystery."
"Alright, I trust you," Prompto smiled.
"Good. But, it's the last ceremony we have to be in last name order." He said.
"Alright I gotcha! No more long and boring school ceremonies after that!"
"I'd be glad, but then I have long and boring royal ceremonies to look forward to." Noctis groaned.
"Oof, sounds like a tough one," Prompto chuckled softly.
Noctis nodded solemnly. "Well, good for you, you're my official courtship partner, so you're going to be my partner for a lot of it."
"I figured you were going to say that. But I'll make sure you don't grow bored or fall asleep."
"Should Ignis be worried?" He asked while they climbed out of the car to head toward the milling crowd getting in line for graduation.
"Worried that I am going to replace him by keeping you awake? Who knows?" Prompto replied before he stuck out his tongue slightly.
"I'm more worried about what methods you'll use to keep me awake," he teased.
"You're worried or you think Ignis is worried I'm going to be dirty about it? Seriously he needs to get his head out of the gutter."
"I mean, I'm a bit worried you could get dirty with it, because I know what you've pulled in class." He laughed.
Prompto gasped, placing a hand on his chest. "Calling my lame dirty jokes 'worrying'? Noct! How could you!"
Noctis cackled a little bit before stifling it. "Your face- your face is the best."
Prompto grinned. "I'll take that as a win for me."
He finished laughing before giving Prompto a quick kiss. "I'll see you after graduation, alright? Don't miss me too much."
"I'll be right there in your heart," Prompto said as he poked Noctis's chest. "Have fun watching for me!"
"Always." Noctis replied softly before they parted ways to head to their respective places. He made sure to chat with his classmates before the ceremony began.
Once the graduation started, Noctis found himself a bit bored by the whole thing despite the excitement it should represent. He smiled when he heard Prompto's name called to get his degree and waited for his own to cross the stage to get his own. He mostly ignored the mass cheer at his name due to his status, but he was glad to have this part of his life over. And then, finally, the ceremony was over, and he could find Prompto for a giant hug.
"We're done! High school is over!" He cheered.
Prompto squeezed him back tightly. "Yes! We are the survivors!"
"Yeah, high school was the worst." Noctis said flatly before breaking into a grin. "Come on, the others are waiting for us to get to the Citadel for our party."
"Woo! Party time, let's go!" Prompto said as he latched onto Noctis's hand. "And hey, high school wasn't the worst. We had each other after all."
"We did. The best part of high school." He confessed while they headed toward the cars to ferry off students toward their parties.
In the car, Noctis gave Prompto a proper kiss. "I can't believe we actually did it. We made it." He said softly.
"Who would have thought it?"
"Probably only Dad." Noctis laughed.
"You're dad always believed in us from the beginning, didn't he?"
"From the moment I told him I liked you, he supported us. He's been great about it."
"I'm glad. I would be so scared if he didn't."
"No worries, he was trying to get me to confess from freshman year. He's been a fan from day one."
"Wow, our number one OG fan is your dad!" Prompto laughed. "That's just so weird."
"Is it? Is it? I'm not surprised, but I know my dad better than most people." Noctis laughed.
"Yeah of course you do. So what's the plan now? Where're we headed?"
"The Citadel, for a party with our friends and family. I believe Ignis has been in charge of all the food, because he believes in no sleep."
"Hmm well as long as the food is still good. But we really need to give Ignis a day off. He needs it."
"Oh, don't worry, I'm trying to figure out how to manage that. He's just, do you know how hard it is to get him to leave work?"
"Maybe we can ask Gladio?"
Noctis considered that before nodding. "Yeah, that sounds good. Gladio knows how to get to Iggy in ways I can't."
"So... when do you think they'll get married?"
"Oh, that's a tough question. I have no idea." He laughed. "I almost would say it would happen after we get married."
Prompto snorted. "You really think Iggy would be that dense?"
"if he took six months to figure out Gladio wanted to date. . . then yes, yes I would believe that. If it was anything else beyond personal matters, I would say no."
"Wow, do we need to have a betting pool or something?"
Noctis gave a little giggle at that. "I mean, I wouldn't be opposed, as long as I don't have to run it."
"Ah you know i got it all handled! I'm the money man!"
He gave a snort into Prompto's shoulder. "yeah, you sure about that?" Noctis asked in amusement. "We'll see about that."
"Dude! I spent money on an Assassin's Creed figure one time. ONE time! That doesn't count."
"I mean, I heard a rumor about a second edition figure on the flea market the other day." Noctis teased while pulling Prompto in close.
"Come on! Stop tempting meeeeee," Prompto pouted.
Noctis smiled at that. "Okay, I'll stop tempting you. Good thing, since we made it to the party."
"Whew! Great! Let's get this party started!"
He led them up to the large room everyone had gathered for the party. Ignis had put together a full buffet of delicious food to nibble on while people chatted with each other.
The party went as well as they could have expected. It was small, but it had all of their closest friends and family there. The time seemed to fly by and near the end of it, Regis approached the two, who were currently sitting on the couch.
"Ah boys, mind if I have a quick word with the two of you?"
Noctis looked over at Prompto for a moment then replied, "Sure Dad. Whatever you need."
"I wanted to congratulate the two of you again on your graduation," Regis started. "You know I am proud of the both of you."
"Thank you Regis," Prompto nodded. "That's really nice to know that the king is proud of me!"
"Thanks. I'm glad that it's finally over."
"But now we can begin to look to the future," Regis said with a wink.
"Yeah, which should be fun. Time to deal with the Council face to face finally."
"Yes there is the council, but I thought first there was something else we could discuss," Regis replied.
Prompto looked visibly confused. "Huh? What is he talking about, Noct?"
Noctis blinked several times and looked over at Prompto. Then he looked over at Regis. "What else is there to talk about?"
Regis only smiled. "You know what I refer to. But if you need a little more time. I'll leave you to it."
Noctis stared at his dad for a long moment before he choked. "Seriously? You didn't waste any time asking after we graduated."
"I thought we talked about this," Regis smirked. "But maybe we can give it a few days."
"I'm still so lost," Prompto sighed.
"We," Noctis waved between him and Prompto, "haven't even talked about it."
"Ahh, I see. Well I shall hold back my excitement for another day then."
"I'll- I'll be sure to let you know how it all goes."
After Regis left the room, Prompto stared at Noctis. "So... can't tell me what that was about?"
Noctis flushed brightly. "I- promise to not freak out if I tell you?"
"I promise I won't," Prompto said as he placed his hand over his heart.
"Okay, okay, so, shortly after we were rescued... Dad wanted to talk to me about, well, you."
"About me?"
"Yeah, I had tried to forget it because I was mortified. Remember how I said he was our first fan? Well, he is determined to make you his son in law."
Prompto gasped loudly. His eyes widened as he went to cover his mouth. "Y-You.. you mean...?"
Noctis hummed awkwardly. "Yeah, yeah, I got him to leave it till after we graduated high school. But, I guess he's still a bit eager about everything. And impatient."
"He's serious... about you m-marrying me?" Prompto squeaked softly.
"Very serious. That's what the conversation was supposed to be about, I think."
"And what about you? You said he's insisting on it. But what about you?"
Noctis flushed and ducked his head. "I want you at my side forever. The last two years have been great, and, if I could make it permanent, that'd be great."
Tears trickled from Prompto's eyes. He tried to wipe them away, but more kept coming. "You really mean it?"
"I really mean it." Noctis said softly. When he noticed the tears, he reached up to gently brush them away.
"Part of me always worried this was just a dream, y'know? That I was just living a fantasy and after high school it would be over. I never actually thought..." Prompto let out a sob, no longer able to hold it in.
Noctis pulled Prompto into his arms to rub his back. "You never thought I'd want this?" He asked softly.
"Just an irrational fear. With you being the prince and all," Prompto muttered.
"You know if you marry me, you'll be a prince too. Are you okay with that?"
"Isn't it like every kid's dream to be a prince or princess one day? Of course, now I know it's filled with super boring meetings and tutorings, but like... still cool."
"Okay, but don't whine at me when Ignis starts really training you. So... one day, marriage?"
"Yes," Prompto whispered into Noctis's hair. "Always and forever at your side."
"And I'll always make sure there's a space there for you." He whispered back.
"So," Prompto chuckled now that his tears died down. "You have some grand proposal planned?"
Noctis sputtered at that. "No, not at all. Give me some time."
"Alright. But I can't wait. I know I'll love whatever you do."
"Even if I make you wait ten years?"
"Dude, even if you took a hundred years, knowing that you love me is enough," Prompto laughed. "I'd be fine waiting."
Noctis laughed at that. "Well, I'll do my best to keep you from waiting a hundred years."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
"You know I'm gonna have to tell Dad, and he's going to be so smug."
"I can't believe your dad is so crazy about us getting married."
"I think he likes the idea of more children to father."
"C-Children? Or do you mean just like having me as a son-in-law?"
Noctis groaned like he was dying. "Knowing him, both."
"But uh Noct? We're both guys... how would that child part work?"
"Dude, don't ask me. I'm trying very hard to not think that far."
"Sorry, I just know the council and stuff..."
Sighing, Noctis rubbed his face some. "No, you're good. It's a valid question. I honestly haven't thought much about it. But the council will have stipulations about this, I'm sure."
"Well then it's whatever. Let's just focus on us. Oh! Does this mean I could wear a fancy prince outfit?"
"Yeah, you'd get your own fancy prince outfit."
"Oh em gee. That sounds amazing. I bet whenever this happens it's going to be the coolest."
"At least at this point you're used to the tailors."
"You're right about that. But hey, I'm still going to look forward to it."
"Good. Come on, let's head back, so we can get some rest."
"Sounds like a plan."
