The World
When Mokuba can't sleep, he likes to pad down and across the hall to his brother's room.
Sometimes, Seto is awake and Mokuba can see the laptop fluorescence through the crack between the closed door and floor. More often than not, there's no light at all. Just silence and the exhausted heavy air of a man who has worked long hours.
When Mokuba was sixteen, he looked across his lighted birthday cake into Seto's eyes and seized his fondest wish.
Seto pulled away, looked away. Mokuba had never seen Seto bow to anyone, shy away instead of stride forward confidently, proudly with the bearing of a conqueror for whom limits are nothing but a thing to be broken.
Mokuba hasn't seen Seto's eyes since.
At breakfast, where there had been comforting silence and weary smiles before, there is only now mumbles, murmurs that Mokuba has to strain to hear. When Mokuba gets up to take warm bread from the toaster, he sees a reflection on its metallic surface, a flash of blue full of wonder and confusion. Mokuba's never been a pessimist; he's a Kaiba raised by his brother. There's none of Gozaburo's blood in him at all, so Mokuba knows he will always win in the end.
Mokuba smiles and makes sure his hand brushes Seto's when he passes the syrup.
There's a girl in Mokuba's class. She wears fuchsia and neon green earrings in the shape of triangles. When she flips her hair, she freezes anyone in her tracks like an impossibly beautiful medusa.
There's a boy in Mokuba's class with hair so blonde it's almost white. He wears dark blue jeans and a T-shirt with the Rolling Stones on it. When he smiles, the high school falls at his feet like the Greeks worshipped Apollo.
When Mokuba laughs, the whole world sighs and falls in love with him all over again, because it's loved him at first glance.
None of it compares to what Mokuba feels for Seto.
Seto's manicured and sharp. He's all metallics and biting sarcasm. Anyone who has ever come across Seto has feared him. They've never seen Seto tired in the day, rubbing his temples from a headache or soaking wet when baby Mokuba used to splash him.
They've never seen Seto asleep after love. Mokuba hasn't either – he thinks the universe would end, explode like one giant supernova if he did.
Mokuba's a Kaiba. He's greedy for things he should never have.
Mokuba's also Seto's brother and he understands patience and love which Gozaburo never did.
So when it's Seto's birthday, Mokuba catches his brother before Seto bolts down his breakfast and hurries out the door to the office.
Mokuba's made a cupcake, frosted it in white icing and decorated it with one lit candle. The candle is made of two strands of white and blue. They've twisted, melted and blurred into one in the melting wax.
Mokuba smiles at Seto, the way he's never smiled at anyone else, and tells Seto he wishes him the world.
Seto looks up from the cupcake with serious eyes...
He shows Mokuba he already has it.
