While the intersection of people that follow me who are interested in both Dad's Army and Astrology is likely to be quite limited, please see below a birth chart reading I have done for Frank Pike (chart set for 16 August 1922, 0030, Weston-Super-Mare, UK):

Gemini Ascendant - This comes across strongly as his childlike (and childish) nature, a certain inability not to say things at times and, of course, a love for magazines, radio and film. He even made a radio. He appears to have a somewhat short attention span if the subject is not of interest, and can slip into an imaginary fantasy world easily.

Leo Sun (4th house Placidus) - There is no other Sun placement he could have - he genuinely believes, I think, that he is an undiscovered Hollywood Star, and if it wasn't for the war, he'd be in California right now, with some beautiful girl at his side, rich and famous. He will be noticed, he makes people pay attention, and they will be fully aware if he does not, in any given moment, feel treated with the attention his Leo Sun deserves (usually if wet, cold or hungry) - and wants to be seen as important - someone worthy of command and respect (an officer, maybe?)The 4th house placement though, is evidence of how strong the attachment to home and country actually is. His sense of duty to his country is a part of him, and although afraid when his call up actually comes, would not have hesitated to fight and probably die for it. The war stories of the older men mean a lot to him, and I think he hopes to make them proud, and one day, hopefully, to have stories of his own. Obviously, of course, his Leo Sun probably also squares Mainwaring's Sun in Taurus too.

Taurus Moon (12th House Placidus)

This is further evidence for his deep dislike of being wet, hungry or cold. A Taurus moon likes to be comfortable, looked after (as does a Leo Sun), and have things they way they like them, the way they always were. Growing out of childhood is disturbing to that state of affairs, and this could be one of the main reasons why he is happy to let himself be fussed over by his mother on occasion, but at the same time, this is square his Sun. His identity is in conflict with the routine, cosseting and predictability of childhood and the presence of his mother. In time, the square will force a break, and he will grow up. Being in the 12th house, I think this indicates his mother's secrets and their impact on his life, which is not consciously felt, but there, and noticed by others.

Virgo Mercury (4th House Placidus)

With this placement, I can imagine him being good at all the practical, mathematical things that a boy of his time was meant to be. Being good at figures is of course, what makes him able to do his job, and by all accounts do it well. I think he is likely to think about his mother a lot with this placement, and takes on many of her opinions and way of doing things. They can both be quite impatient and not care too much about being noticed if they have something to say. That said, her words can also be a source of embarrassment in front of the Platoon. He probably also thinks about his family a lot, and where exactly he is from - because there are a lot of questions there.

Libra Venus (5th House Placidus)

The beautiful Hollywood pin up girl is here. The perfect fantasy image of what a woman should be, with a pretty smile, preferably blonde hair, lovely legs and curves in all the right places. The reality, interestingly, is a bit different, and the Venus Pluto square he has may have something to do with it. The real life girls he is attracted to are somewhat flashy, rather than sweet, and not as perfect as the Hollywood image might suggest. There's a touch of the rebel, or the bad girl about both Violet and Sylvia, and that's probably a large part of their attraction. There's another world of experience out there that he doesn't know much about, but they (Sylvia especially) represent it, and are possibly how to find it. Venus is tightly conjuct Saturn too, suggesting that growing up is linked to romantic relationships in many ways. It's also conjunct Jupiter - indicating that he inherited his father's eye for a pretty girl, perhaps?

Sagittarius Mars (7th House Placidus)

Rushing into situations, not thinking before he speaks, the one who begs to be allowed the Tommy gun to emulate a Chicago gangster - all that suggests a Sagittarius Mars. He also enjoyed his time in the Scouts, out in nature and camping (presumably as long as the weather was good) and is quick to take action - not necessarily thinking too much about it. He also asked Violet to marry him at nearly 19, suggesting an impulsive nature when it comes to girls and what he wants - if he wants something, he wants it now, and in that situation, a marriage proposal was seen as the best way to get it. That hasty proposal fits well with Mars being in the 7th house of partnership too, and maybe also with the somewhat volatile image of a long term relationship that he'd grown up with - Mavis pouring porridge into Wilson's hat after he said it had a slight burnt taste around the edges and throwing him out of the house on at least one occasion, seem quite Mars in the 7th, and could be a placement he shares with his mother. Mars is also conjunct his descendant - indicating the fiery sort of woman he needs if he is to grow up - one who will not stand for him pulling the sort of behaviour he could get away with as a child. I also believe that his Mars was conjunct Sylvia's Sun.

Jupiter in Libra (5th House Placidus)

This works well with his Sun in Leo, and adds to a love of being noticed and being able to put on a show. It also adds to a romantic nature that can fall for a pretty girl easily and quickly. It could also show that he gets the most luck in that respect by copying Wilson's style around women, dressing smart and putting on the charm (as on occasion, he certainly does, notably with Sylvia - and then freaks out because it worked better than expected, but also to get his own way around Wilson).

Saturn in Libra (5th House Placidus)

As mentioned, there is a lot of learning he has to do regarding grown up romantic relationships. This is very Saturn in the 5th House, and he learns about them in the show mainly when they go wrong. I think Mavis would do her best to limit his contact with girls, and what he knows about them, and Wilson doesn't really want to give him decent advice either, until the aftermath of his date with Sylvia, so there's a theme of limitation and restriction there in the house of love and romance too, as well as the relationships that we see not going well.

Uranus in Pisces (11th House Placidus)

He is highly imaginative, and as other placements also indicate, has no problem in creating a fantasy world that no doubt seems preferable to one at war. He is also often the one to come up with unusual or unconventional ideas when with the other men, showing a different way of thinking while part of a group (11th House). This placement also adds to his rather sudden approach to romance, and the shock that his engagement causes. He is stubborn, and can believe that his views on any given subject are correct, even when everyone else can see that they aren't - especially as regards Violet, and goes against the group for the sake of a romantic image of a relationship that has little basis in fact. Uranus is square to Mars as well, further adding to his impulsive nature and indicating that it often gets him into trouble.

Neptune in Leo (4th House Placidus)

The planet that adds a feeling of confusion and uncertainty is conjunct his IC - the base of the chart that shows where we come from. He doesn't know who his father really is - he thinks he does - from probably a single photo in the hallway. It's Mavis's wedding photo - grainy and in poor light, that could have been any man with dark hair. Family is uncertain - and includes a half sister he's never met - or would even recognise as such.

Neptune is also conjunct his Sun, making him even more of a dreamer, captivated by the Silver Screen.

Pluto in Cancer (Second House Placidus)

As with so many others with this placement, his home and country were destroyed, and would be rebuilt in a very different form. The values that he believed in would come out of the war changed, like many others, as it worked to strip away childhood conditioning and his view of the world - we never saw it, but I think his post-war attitude on many things would have very different.

Aquarius MC

He's probably the one to shake things up at work and look at new ways of doing things, which is no doubt resisted by Mainwaring. After the war, he might have taken opportunities linked to new technology - a story existed, once, in which he'd been accepted for post-war National Service by the RAF, and learned to fly - becoming an officer in the process. I can imagine he was even part of the Berlin Airlift in 1948, and felt the need to do something about the wider humanitarian suffering as a result of war, suffering that he hadn't really known about at the time. There was a much larger, more complicated world out there, and I think it would take him a lot of effort to come to terms with it as it really was, but once he did, I think he'd want to help, serving others as he'd been prepared to serve his country.

Leo IC

I've mentioned this in his Neptune placement, but Leo IC also suggests a much loved and much wanted child. It's no wonder Mavis is so protective of her only son. He was probably always putting on show of some sort as a child, and felt like the centre of universe - and was treated as such, which no doubt also annoys Mainwaring as he sees it as an inability to take advice and do things the right way.

Sagittarius Descendant

As discussed in his Mars placement, he is drawn to fiery, impulsive types who have a sense of adventure - which sounds like Sylvia to me!
