"Come and sing with us, Catherine," Freddie invited her.
"Me? No, no. I don't sing well," she replied.
"Ah! Who are you trying to deceive?" Steve asked.
Catherine was embarrassed, but accepted Freddie's invitation. She came over and sang beside them.
Jane was very angry and humiliated before the other girls. She didn't understand why Steve and Freddie paid so much attention to Catherine. Jane considered herself much more beautiful than Catherine, but she forgot that looks aren't everything. Steve thought that Catherine was not only beautiful, but she was friendly, cheerful, docile and empathized with other people. She also had a sparkle in her eye and a beautiful smile, and her smile seemed like a thousand reasons for Steve to smile. He didn't know why he was feeling this way and tried to hide it, but he didn't always succeed.
Catherine knew how angry Jane was, she didn't want to make enemies, as they would have to work together on this and several other missions over the years, but she couldn't live her life according to Jane's wishes.
At the end of the Luau, Steve was still hungry and invited Freddie and some friends to go somewhere to eat. He also invited Catherine and the other girls went after them even though they weren't invited.
Catherine sat at a table and Steve joined her while Freddie danced with some unknown girls. "If Kelly finds out about this, he's a died man," Steve commented to Catherine.
"Who's Kelly? His girlfriend?" Catherine asked.
"Yes. And she is very jealous," Steve replied.
"What about you, sailor? Don't you have a girlfriend?" Catherine asked.
"No," Steve was objective in his response. "And about you?" He asked her.
"Not anymore. When he knew I was going to join the Navy, he cheated on me before I even left. Well, with that attitude, you can see how much he liked me, right?"
"He's an asshole," Steve replied.
Catherine smiled. "I fully agree."
"Oh, my God. She has that smile again, a smile that makes me look at her like with a goofy face and I can't help it," Steve thought.
"Well, if you don't have a girlfriend, I don't think it's because of a lack of candidates. I think it's because you want to be with everyone at the same time," she said.
"No, Catherine. I'm not like that, it doesn't work like that for me," he replied.
Catherine looked at him with a look of doubtt. "OK, if you say so."
"And speaking of suitors, Jane is coming," Catherine told him.
Steve sighed. "I'm glad I'm done eating."
Jane sat down next to him and started talking things out with him and ignored Catherine. "If you want to know something about my life, ask Catherine. She knows everything," Steve told Jane and stood up, leaving her sitting at the table with Catherine.
"Catherine, take care of my ukulele, please," he asked her and then he joined Freddie on the dance floor.
"What do you know about his life, Catherine?" Jane asked her.
"Did you notice that I'm here, Jane?" Catherine asked sarcastically.
"You don't know anything about his life, do you?" Jane told her.
"You're wrong. I know. He has three girlfriends in three different cities, two boys and a little girl on the way. This thing of being here one day and the other day there, you know, right? It can always end up resulting in that, but he loves his children and his girlfriends."
"This can't be true," Jane replied.
"Well, if you don't believe me, ask him. I only told you because he sent you to ask me, so that was practically a permission for me to tell. But keep it to yourself, because a girlfriend doesn't know about the existence of another's, "Catherine told Jane and was having a great time.
"I couldn't imagine he was a womanizer," Jane replied.
Jane got up and went to the dance floor after Steve. She was talking to him and he, at one point, looked at Catherine with an incredulous face. Catherine smiled to him with a mischievous face.
Steve motioned for Freddie to dance with Jane and went back to Catherine.
"Three girlfriends and three children? Are you serious?" Steve asked Catherine.
Catherine laughed. "Sorry, Steve, but I couldn't resist."
"Now she wants to be fourth girlfriend. It was better have told her that I didn't like women."
Catherine laughed again. "My mom was right, I couldn't miss it tonight, I'm having a lot of fun."
"You're having fun at the expense of my misfortune, right? I don't deserve a Jane behind me all the time."
"Sorry again," she replied.
"Okay." Steve held out his hand to her. "Let's Dance?"
"Come on," she replied. Steve held her hand firmly and gently at the same time and led her to the dance floor. That meeting of hands was the first expressive touch between the two. Catherine felt different, it was as if his touch was everything she had been waiting for her whole life.
